Everyone is well-aware of the outstanding achievements that Robert Downey Jr. managed to amass in the film industry ever since he took on the role of Tony Stark in the first film of the MCU, which was none other than Iron Man.
But as the saying goes, behind every successful man is a story, which in Rdj’s case, is filled with dark and destructive events and situations.

While his dark past is well documented and equally well-known, many might not know how his co-stars felt about working with him during those times. Shedding light on this, his co-star James Spader, who worked with him in 1987’s Less Than Zero, revealed that when he was on set with the star, his heart broke seeing him in such a terrible state.

Robert Downey Jr. is one of the biggest movie stars of our generation. The actor recently won his first Oscar for his role in Christopher Nolan’s monumental 2023 historical drama Oppenheimer. But, despite his many impressive movie roles, Downey Jr. will forever be Iron Man for Marvel fans.
The 59-year-old actor also won fans over after candidly talking about his battle with drug addiction and how he overcame it. However, long before the Iron Man actor was on his road to redemption, he played the role of a drug addict in a forgotten 1987 thriller. Playing the said role catapulted him further into the dark depths of addiction.

The Scream franchise was fairly popular for releasing some of the most enjoyable horror movies in pop culture. Starting with the first Scream movie in 1996, this slasher franchise has 5 more movies and a TV show under its belt. But after Scream 6 (2023), things took a turn when actress Melissa Barrera was fired from the franchise. Her social media post about the Israel-Hamas was deemed antisemitic by the production house behind the franchise, and they decided to let go of the actress in November last year.

Although talks about Scream 7 had been ongoing before all the controversy, things went into a limbo after. After Barrera, news broke out that the other lead star of the franchise, Jenna Ortega, had also left months before the firing because of a scheduling conflict and an alleged pay dispute. And then, Christopher Landon, who had been brought on to direct the sequel,...

Euphoria has been one blockbuster of a series. Despite its overtly s*xual content and portrayal of dr*g usage and the criticism following it, the series has gone on to earn several awards and nominations, including Primetime Emmy Awards. Not only did it carry several moral lessons along with its mature theme, but the series propelled its main stars to the very top of Hollywood’s social circle.

Suffice to say, fans have been waiting since January 2022 for season three of the hit show. Despite it being slated to be released in 2025, a new statement by HBO confirms that the season is delayed even further, making fans believe it is never going to come out.

David Dastmalchian has starred in a string of successful films, like Oppenheimer, recently. The American actor has been a staple face in various superhero franchises throughout his career, but his latest film could not have been farther from the genre.
Dastmalchian’s new film, Late Night With the Devil, adds a new flavor to the horror genre. Dubbed one of the best indie horror films of late, it has been winning accolades and rave reviews, including from the master, Stephen King himself. Even though it breathes life into a tired and overworked category of films, Late Night With the Devil has one major flaw.

Zodiac, the 2007 masterwork of director David Fincher, is a spine-tingling thriller that grips viewers from beginning to end. However, did you know that there was a long and winding casting process before Robert Downey Jr. was cast as journalist Paul Avery, one of the main characters?
Yes, the director, known for his meticulous attention to detail and dark brooding style, had set his sights on Brad Pitt for one of the lead roles in his $84.7 million film. However, Pitt wasn’t available at the time, leaving Fincher in a bit of a predicament. Not one to settle for second-best, the latter began searching for another actor who was able to portray the complex character of Paul Avery.

The director’s list continued with none other than Daniel Craig, the James Bond star, who seemed like a fitting choice on the part of the valiant journalist.

It was, to paraphrase something a giant purple guy once said, inevitable. During the 96th Academy Awards ceremony, Robert Downey Jr. won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Admiral Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer." Although the fact that Downey Jr. has retained a relatively youthful appearance thanks to his pervasive charm and wry magnetism means that he doesn't quite feel like an "elder statesman" of the acting world, the actor has nonetheless enjoyed a lengthy 40+ year career in the motion picture business, and most of that career has seen him be continually praised by critics and fans alike as being one of the best actors working in film. With all of that in mind, his finally being awarded an Oscar feels like something that's been a very long time coming.

Don’t call it a career win because few would argue that Robert Downey, Jr. didn’t deliver one of his best performances ever as Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” That immense talent was rewarded with his first Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category at the 96th Academy Awards. One of the most popular actors of the past two decades and a three-time Oscar nominee overall, Downey, Jr. earned his first nomination 30 years ago for “Chaplin.”

Bret Easton Ellis is an interesting person. First, he’s the author of an iconic novel (a personal favorite of this writer), “American Psycho.” He also wrote other notable books like “Less Than Zero” and “The Rules of Attraction.” But he’s not just an author nowadays. No, lately, he’s been more known as a podcaster, political commentator, and all around social media personality.

It’s been a star-filled weekend in Santa Barbara, with a dozen of A-listers — including numerous Oscar nominees — making their way to the American Riviera for events at the 39th Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
On Friday night, inside the 2,000-seat Arlington Theater, which was sold out, the fest celebrated Robert Downey Jr. with its Maltin Modern Master Award, which is named after the film critic/historian Leonard Maltin. Maltin moderated a brisk career retrospective conversation with the Oppenheimer best supporting actor Oscar nominee, who charmed the audience with his self-deprecating humor and imitations of everyone from Richard Attenborough to his late father Robert Downey Sr., prior to Downey’s costar Cillian Murphy presenting him with the award itself.

Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr has reflected on an impactful conversation with actor Ryan O’Neal from “the first day of rehearsals” for their 1989 film ‘Chances Are’. The Oscar nominee revealed that he and the late O’Neal – who died in December at age 82 – had an eye-opening conversation while making ‘Chances Are’, reports People magazine.
After having shown what he called “the dark side of Hollywood” in 1987’s ‘Less Than Zero’, Robert detailed one specific memory from ‘Chances Are’ two years later.
Speaking with Maltin Modern Master Award namesake Leonard Maltin at the 2024 Santa Barbara Film Festival on Friday, the actor said, “We were in Washington, D.C. I met some friends, went out back at the hotel, and we ordered some champagne.”
He continued: “One thing led to another, and then the read-through was at 11:00 a.m. and it was about 2:45 p.m. and I was just sleeping...

Finnish filmmaker Mikko Mäkelä takes us into the shadow worlds of niche sexuality and queer sex work in London’s most sterile apartments and grayly desolate hotels in his new film “Sebastian.” This provocative, explicit, and ultimately tender drama stars newcomer Ruaridh Mollica as Max, a 25-year-old literary journalist writing a novel about a sex worker named Sebastian — and to get to the root of the thing, Max decides that he, too, must submerge himself in that very underworld.
As a psychological portrait of an aspiring writer who gets too immersed in his own project, “Sebastian” is never as piercing as star Mollica’s eyes and chiseled face. But the performance is affecting, and Mäkelä brandishes an ambient, lulling sense of style that evokes the loneliness at Max’s core. Internationally savvy gay film fans with a taste for the kinky and sad will want to check out this understated...

I recently argued that the Oscar races for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress are effectively over, explaining five reasons why Bradley Cooper in “Maestro” and Danielle Brooks in “The Color Purple” have those respective categories virtually locked up.
I had been reluctant to call another acting contest, especially one in which there’s already a solid frontrunner. I was truly hoping for some serious suspense, with a major surprise awaiting us at the Academy Awards ceremony in March.
Unfortunately, I have no choice but to finally jump on an already crowded bandwagon. Here are five reasons why Robert Downey Jr. is almost certain to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer.”
1. He’s someone whom the academy really wants to honor.
He became a major young star in the 1980’s, with appearances in films like “Weird Science,” “Back to School,” “The Pick-Up Artist” and “Less Than Zero.” He...

Robert Downey, Jr. has been frank and forthcoming about his prolonged struggles with substance addiction. For many years, the actor abused cocaine and heroin, all while balancing an exciting career as one of his generation's best actors. Downey opened up, as in other places, on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," talking about how the most difficult part of giving up drugs was the resolute decision to do so. Ever since, Downey has remained clean, and, thanks to the 2008 film "Iron Man" become one of the world's wealthiest and most recognizable movie stars. Also in 2008, Downey appeared in the film "Tropic Thunder" as an intensely devoted prima donna actor who surgically changed his race (!) to play a role. He was nominated for an Academy Award.
As many former addicts might tell you, their decision to get clean is often accompanied by a "low point" or a "moment of clarity." Something might happen...

On January 10, 2013, The New York Times published a story by Stephen Rodrick titled “Here Is What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan in Your Movie.” The article was a detailed account of what happened when director Paul Schrader, writer Bret Easton Ellis, and producer Braxton Pope teamed up to make “The Canyons,” a low-budget feature starring troubled former child star Lindsay Lohan and porn actor James Deen that was in danger of falling apart nearly every day thanks to Lohan’s erratic behavior. The piece was thorough, well-researched, and extremely entertaining. It also had nothing to do with the actual movie that emerged from the chaos.
Nevertheless, by the time “The Canyons” was released in August 2013 it was clear that the article and the gossip had created a sense that Schrader’s film couldn’t possibly be any good — how could the conditions described by Rodrick lead to anything coherent?...

If there's one thing that you can say about Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," it's that the three-hour historical epic about the father of the atomic bomb boasts an incredibly deep bench. Nolan packs the film with well-known and well-liked actors, with many big names seemingly happy to sign on for little more than a cameo if it let them be part of "Oppenheimer." But aside from the Matt Damons and Kenneth Branaghs, there's also a surprising number of cast members who began their careers as child stars.
Some came up during the mid-2000s golden age of the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, while others date back decades earlier. Also, several have since gone on to lead well-developed and respected careers, while others are still in the process of proving themselves as adult actors in their own right. Bret Easton Ellis is losing his patience with the current state of film criticism.
In a recent episode of The Brett Easton Ellis Podcast, the “American Psycho” and “Less Than Zero” author sounded off about what he sees as a consensus-based approach that is killing originality among critics. He explained that he no longer relies on critics to determine which movies to see, preferring to read select reviews after he has already watched a movie.

On “The Idol,” Jocelyn just wants to be perfect. If only the show around her had such clarity of vision.
As played by Lily-Rose Depp, the pop star Jocelyn spends part of the series’ second episode pushing herself through endless retakes of a music video shoot — long past the point at which the thing seems as good as it’ll ever be — in order to attain the crispness and clarity that lie just out of reach in her mind. Those sequences, with Aronofsky-movie-ready shots of bloody feet and the intriguing chatter among Jocelyn underlings that had been a highlight of the show’s first episode, create, for a time, a sense of Jocelyn’s reality, and what she has at stake.

The American Psycho episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:
Horror can take many forms and its high time we talked about something firmly in the psychological realm. Author Brett Easton Ellis is known to broach subjects that are uncomfortable or outright horrifying, but it is with his 3rd book that he went for the throat so to speak and tackle a more traditional genre topic in a thoroughly nontraditional way. American Psycho was quite controversial upon its release in 1991 and the film based on it in 2000 (watch it Here) was divisive then and it’s divisive now.
Take a look at the craftsmanship on that card as we find out what the f*ck happened to this adaptation.

By now, the final line of the first MCU movie is iconic: “I am Iron Man.” And not only do we all know that the line was delivered by Robert Downey Jr., many of us also know that it was improvised, one of the many instances of the cast taking an improv approach to the film. But it almost never happened, as MCU chief Kevin Feige originally had someone else in mind to don the stylish facial hair of reformed weaponeer Tony Stark.
During the commencement address to graduates of the University of Southern California (via The Direct), Feige sought to teach the assembly a lesson about dealing with unmet expectations. When casting Iron Man, Feige and the other producers at the newly-formed Marvel Studios searched for an actor with “the perfect mix of heart and strength and charisma.” This actor would be the center of the movie that would launch a franchise,...

Bret Easton Ellis’ latest novel “The Shards” goes where only Bret Easton Ellis could possibly go: back to 1981 Los Angeles with a 600-page book, largely unedited, that’s mostly about himself.
That’s partly because the main character is named Bret, a nihilistic, 17-year-old, bisexual San Fernando Valley trust-fund prep-school brat who’s writing a book called “Less Than Zero.” Yes, this is literary-horror autofiction from the author of that aforementioned 1985 debut and shocking postmodern novels like “American Psycho.”
“The Shards” is also a more-or-less direct transcript of the Patreon serial Ellis launched in late 2020, and its unwieldiness means it’s well-matched for a long-form, flashy series adaptation at HBO. As IndieWire has confirmed, “The Shards” is now being set up at the premium cabler with Ellis as the sole writer while executive producing with Nick Hall (Emmy-winning executive producer on “The White Lotus”) and Brian Young (an executive producer...

There’s a lot to digest in Damien Chazelle’s overstuffed Hollywood epic, “Babylon.” The story of three disparate movie denziens trying to survive the transition between the silent era and the talkies boasts some stellar performances, but what people might remember after the credits roll is just how wild Chazelle’s hedonistic world is. As he sees it, the silent era of Hollywood is packed to bursting with orgies, dancing, booze, woozy elephants, and a lot of nudity. Oh, and a ton of cocaine.
To many modern-day viewers, cocaine is likely more synonymous with ’80s excess than the supposed glamour of the ’20s. Movies like “Goodfellas” and “Less Than Zero” present cocaine as a party drug of a more contemporary era, so it’s understandable that it would show up in Chazelle’s film, particularly its raucous opening party sequence, as the filmmaker threads historical accuracies with his own special skew.

Robert Downey Jr. set out to make an objective portrait, a tribute to his father, the underground filmmaking maverick Robert Downey Sr. His dad had other plans.
“The key point in this is when he goes, ‘Ok, I think we should split into two camps: The (expletive) movie and the one I’m gonna make,’” recalls Downey Jr., laughing. “I just go, ’Man, hats off to you, Pops.”
“Sr.,” directed by Chris Smith, is a work of father-son harmony more than might be suggested by Downey Sr.’s typically brusque assertion of filmmaking independence. It’s a kind of home movie, mostly made by Downey Jr. but with his father’s own insertions peppered throughout. It’s a son’s loving reckoning with his iconoclast father, a freewheeling cult filmmaker whose experimental films gave Downey Jr. his entry into moviemaking and whose outsized personality did much to inform his son,...

Exclusive: Network Entertainment has optioned Andrew McCarthy’s bestselling memoir Brat: An ’80s Story and will produce a documentary adaptation, the company said Monday.
McCarthy, who rose to fame in the 1980s with roles in such classics as St. Elmo’s Fire, Pretty in Pink and Weekend at Bernie’s, long has pondered what it has meant to him to be an integral member of the iconic group of movie stars known as the Brat Pack. Writing the book, released earlier this year, answered many questions that he’s wrestled with throughout his life. But it also brought up more. Was being identified as a Brat Packer the worst thing that ever happened to him, or was it actually the best?

Welcome to this week’s Nxt UK review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and Less Than Zero is really depressing. Don’t do drugs. Also, don’t get too obsessed with eating just meat or just plants. Neither one on their own is healthy enough for a proper diet. Eat all of the food groups in moderation and you’ll be fine. See? I can be smart. I mean, not that time, but I can fake it very badly.

Although he's not one of the most prominent characters, Euphoria's Ethan, played by Austin Abrams, is one of the only characters on the show who is, so far, not completely messed up. The sweet geek who's crushing hard on Kat is one of the light spots in the show, and we're as charmed by him as we are by actor Abrams. Abrams's career hasn't been all sweet roles, though - his most famous role up until now was, in fact, the complete opposite.
Abrams has been acting since 2011, but mostly in guest spots and smaller roles until 2015. That year, he leaped into the spotlight thanks to a role on The Walking Dead. For nine episodes of season six, he played Ron Anderson, a fellow survivor turned villain. His arc focused on getting revenge on Rick and Carl Grimes, whom he believed were responsible for his father's death and his family's misery.

If you’re not already, Hulu should get you in the summer mood with its June releases. Go to summer camp with the slasher flick “Friday the 13th” — and seven sequels. Listen to the breezy tune “Stuck in the Middle With You” from “Reservoir Dogs.” Compare thee to a summer’s day with “Shakespeare in Love” and “Hamlet.” Go surfing with Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze with “Point Break.” Or if for some reason summer is getting you in a nihilistic mood, go on a Bret Easton Ellis binge with “American Psycho” and “Less Than Zero.”
And if that wasn’t enough, Hulu is bringing back its original series “The Handmaid’s Tale” for a third season.
See the full list of titles below.
June 1
Ask Dr. Ruth: Documentary Premiere
100 Things to do Before High School
The 13th Warrior

Hulu has released its list of content arriving at the streaming service this June, as well as everything that will no longer be available to watch there after June 30.
At the top of the must-watch list is season three of Hulu Original “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which was notably pushed back to a June premiere date in order to ensure it would “maintain the quality it has,” Craig Erwich, Hulu’s Senior Vice President of Originals, said at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour in February. The first three episodes of the new season premiere on Hulu June 5, after which new episodes will be released every Wednesday.
Another Hulu Original of note is “The Weekly” series from The New York Times, coming June 3. Each half-hour episode will feature a Times journalist investigating one of today’s most pressing issues, with new issues being explored each week.

Exclusive: Hulu has opted not to proceed with two pilots, drama Less Than Zero and comedy Search and Destroy.
They are among six recent pilots on Hulu’s slate. Of the other four, two were just picked up to series. Woke is now wrapping filming, while Sweet Tooth is heading into production in May.
Less Than Zero, based on Bret Easton Ellis’ novel, hailed from Ellis, Greenleaf creator Craig Wright and Fox 21 Television Studios. Adapted by Wright and directed by Brett Morgan, Less Than Zero followed Clay (Austin Abrams), a college freshman returning home for Christmas to spend time with his ex-girlfriend and his friend who struggles with addiction.
“It was a tonally very ambitious but ultimately it didn’t feel like the elements came together,” Hulu Svp Craig Erwich told Deadline.
