Let's be real: Dragons are awesome! Since ancient Mesopotamians whispered about Tiamat and Marduk's red serpent servant, the legend of dragons thrived. For generations, these scaly creatures have induced fear and delight. Tolkien drew from these myths to bring the creature into the modern fantasy canon, with his childhood love of Fafnir, Siegfried's legendary foe, transformed into the prideful Smaug. Now the fantasy genre is almost synonymous with dragons. Of course, the '70s introduction of Dungeons & Dragons helped, too! Today, there's a resurgence of love for these big fellas -- starring in movies like "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Raya and the Last Dragon."
Putting dragons on the big screen is a huge technical challenge. Not every movie's budget can commit to that feat. For decades, animation came to the rescue -- pitching price-conscious versions to younger and more accepting viewers. But after the release of "Jurassic Park,...

Just to start, this feels highly ambitious, not to mention possible, but daunting. Those of us that can remember The Last Unicorn from our childhood, and those lucky enough to have seen it since it at some point over the years, know very well that this movie is one of those that still used the wildly imaginative techniques and methods that brought to life a world and several characters that were fully integrated with the story but stood well on their own two feet as well. But thinking that this could be a live-action story is, well, it’s doable, but

Peter S. Beagle's beloved fantasy novel "The Last Unicorn" was highly sought after for animated film adaptations almost immediately upon publication, but it wasn't until 1982 that Rankin/Bass and Topcraft animation in Japan teamed up to create the acclaimed animated film. Thanks to a post from the author's Beagleverse website, "The Last Unicorn" is currently being adapted to a stage musical with Fergie contributing, and a live-action film.
First published in 1968, "The Last Unicorn" tells the story of the supposed last unicorn after the malevolent Red Bull herded unicorns to the ends of the Earth. She sets out on a journey...

"The Last Unicorn" was my favorite film as a child and honestly, remains in my top five even as an adult. The 1982 underrated animated classic is unlike anything that has come before or since. Based on Peter S. Beagle's 1968 novel of the same name (he also wrote the screenplay), the story follows the titular unicorn (voiced by Mia Farrow) as she searches the world for others like her, after hearing she is the last. Along the way, she is kidnapped by the villainous Mommy Fortuna (Angela Lansbury), befriends Schmendrick the magician (Alan Arkin) and Molly Grue (Tammy Grimes), and must contend with the terrifying...

Alan Arkin turned 85 earlier this year, yet he has always seemed timeless. With a career spanning more than 60 years, it’s difficult to fathom when there was ever a time when Arkin wasn’t part of the culture. He was an early member of the Second City theater troupe before making his Oscar-nominated film debut in the timely “The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!” in 1966. He gave iconic performances in seminal movies; he terrified Audrey Hepburn (and audiences) in “Wait Until Dark”; starred in Mike Nichols’ take on Joseph Heller’s “Catch-22”; starred and produced the comedy classic “The In-Laws”; and lent his voice to the 1982 cult classic “The Last Unicorn.” And that was all before his Oscar-winning turn in “Little Miss Sunshine,” which kicked off a renaissance of sorts for the actor, who earned another nomination for best picture winner “Argo” and now stars on the heralded...

Unicorns are sacred animals. I’ve seen the movies Legend and The Last Unicorn so I know what I’m talking about. You mess with a Unicorn and you’re messing with the balance of the universe. So when anything in the world comes up involving a Unicorn I try to take notice. Why am I bringing this up? Because Starbucks is getting in on people’s love for Unicorns and I think it might be kind of gross. They’re making a Unicorn Frappucino. What’s in it? When I was but a wee lass, my sister and I were allowed to pick out one movie at the local Blockbuster each weekend if we were good. Without fail, I would always grab the tattered copy of The Last Unicorn, but one weekend my sister decided to mix things up and instead grabbed Gremlins. Now the way she described it—ancient magics, adorable, furry creatures—I was on board. But the film ended up being far more terrifying than she had let on and I ended up not sleeping for weeks! Needless to say, I had some reservations about Gremlins 2: The New Batch, but Joe Dante’s second installment of the Gremlins series was much more cartoonish and comedic than the first, especially with the introduction of many new characters like the “Brain Gremlin” and the lusty “Female Gremlin.”

From Marine Boy and Thundercats to Cities Of Gold and Akira, we look at the TV shows and movies that introduced the UK to Japanese anime
One evening in 1994, the BBC screened a documentary simply called Manga. Presented by Jonathan Ross, it showcased the rising popularity of Japanese animation, largely focusing on the output of Manga Entertainment, whose dubbed VHS releases had made a huge impact on anime fans and caused a certain amount of consternation among the mainstream press.
For British viewers, the anime boom took a long time to arrive. In America, Japanese shows like Kimba The White Lion, Gigantor and Astro Boy were a common sight on television in the 1960s, yet it took until the late 70s and 80s, and a string of European-Japanese co-productions, before anime finally began to find a hold on UK television.

It is an event that draws in crowds from all over the world and features many individuals and companies showing off their latest products in the hopes that those who come to the convention will purchase whatever they’re selling. But Nycc isn’t just about pushing merchandise and entertainment, it is about togetherness and every October, geeks come to New York and they conquer.

Written by Dana Olsen (Going Berserk) and directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling), The ‘Burbs is a comedy-horror hybrid that, for me, was a staple film of my childhood, a movie I was probably too young to be watching, yet couldn’t get enough of. A stellar cast, featuring heavyweight acting talent like Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher, Corey Feldman and Henry Gibson, this is a beautifully dark, hilarious and addictive film that deals with themes like cannibalism,...

"The Fault in Our Stars" writer John Green is the latest best-selling Ya author to have his novel adapted from page to screen, and the results are overwhelmingly positive. Although not all of his peers have have been quite as lucky, the Ya community is filled with writers hoping their work -- which has been optioned, is in development, or is just a month or so away from hitting the big screen -- will manage to satisfy both existing fans of the book and moviegoers who've never heard of the book.
We caught up with several young adult authors at the annual Book Expo America, and found out which adaptations are their personal favorites, and the results range from childhood classics ("A Christmas Carol") to newer, trippier fare ("Adaptation"). Here are 11 Ya authors' picks for best adaptation.

Arthur Rankin Jr., who along with partner Jules Bass, was responsible for several iconic television Christmas specials, including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman, passed away Thursday at his home in Bermuda at the age of 89.
Rankin formed Videocraft International with Bass in the early 1960s. While their first project was The New Adventures of Pinocchio, Rankin/Bass's most iconic contributions to pop culture are doubtlessly the Rudolph and Frosty specials, which aired on CBS in 1964 and 1969, respectively, and were the two highest-rated programs of the night.

Fans of legendary authors H.P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury and Robert E. Howard are no doubt familiar with the classic genre magazine Weird Tales, which launched the writing careers of those and countless other literary legends. Founded in 1923, the magazine became an icon of the genre and inspired many of its readers to take up writing themselves – including a young Stephen King, whose first exposure to Weird Tales came from issues once owned by his father. The original publication closed up shop back in 1954, and despite many attempts to revive it, Weird Tales remained mostly dormant until 1988, when it resurfaced in a different format and style than the original. Ownership has changed hands recently to Publisher John Harlacher and Editor-in-Chief Marvin Kaye, who vowed to take the magazine back to its roots. The newly-relaunched Weird Tales began appropriately enough with a Lovecraft theme focusing on Hpl's “Old Ones,” with original stories...

Before I dove headfirst into the wonderfully macabre world of horror films, I was raised on a healthy diet of animated movie classics. Every Disney movie was bestowed upon me and I eagerly lapped up the milk that dropped from the mega-corporation’s budding teat. Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Snow White, the list goes on and on. Not only does the list continue, though, Disney has made sure that the films themselves go on for future generations, remastering the originals and formatting them for DVD releases – and charging $40 per copy should our favorite’s already be in the “Disney vault” (please note, I have no qualms with Disney. I tend to enjoy a lot of their movies. Legit.).
It is not these movies that I fear face extinction. It is the smaller films that people can only vaguely remember that will soon cease to exist in our nation’s hearts.

The movie adaptation of the 1968 novel The Last Unicorn in 1982 was one of the films of my childhood that stayed in heavy rotation. And if you’re like me you might have been a little disappointed at the quality of the copy you had until 2007 when a decent quality version was finally released. Now it has been restored and remastered and is about to go out on tour.
The tour kicks off this month on the 20th which coincides with the 74th birthday of the author, Peter S. Beagle. And if you live in the San Francisco area you can celebrate both the author’s birthday and the remastering of the movie with a special kick off party before the movie heads out on tour.

If there is anything that irritates me about films made for children these days, it is that they treat children with kid gloves. No danger, no threat, no real emotion, nothing to get kids too attached to the story. A bunch of flashing lights and whirring bells and whistles do not emotion make. The films that I saw when I was a kid were different. I know it's cliche, but back in my day we had films with dark themes and story lines that actually had young people engaged with something more than the most primitive parts of their brains. Films like The Secret of N.I.M.H., The Last Unicorn, and others, mostly from Don Bluth and company, had kids on the edge of their seats...

Mia Farrow fears for her future in Rosemary's Baby.
Roman Polanski’s (Carnage) masterful Rosemary’s Baby (1968) remains one of the filmmaker’s finest works and one of the greatest horror-thriller films of the past half-century.
Young Mia Farrow (The Last Unicorn) stars as young mother-to-be Rosemary Woodhouse, a newly married New Yorker (by way of Nebraska) who grows increasingly suspicious that her over-friendly elderly neighbors (High Society’s Sidney Blackmer and Harold and Maude’s Ruth Gordon) and self-involved actor-husband (John Cassavetes, Too Late Blues) are hatching a Satanic plot against her and her unborn baby.
Increasingly terrifying and darkly comic, Rosemary’s Baby was faithfully adapted from Ira Levin’s best seller by writer/director Polanski. It regularly pops up on “Top Ten Horror Movie lists,” as it rightfully should, including a couple of ours — Big Bad Daddies...

Cassidy Freeman is moving on to a new series, but she still can see "Smallville" in her rear-view mirror.
Formerly the devious Tess Mercer on the young-Superman saga that lasted a decade, the actress plays it much more down-to-earth as the attorney daughter of the title sheriff (Australian actor Robert Taylor) in "Longmire," A&E's modern Western based on Craig Johnson's novels that premieres Sunday (June 3). Right after that, though, Freeman will step back into her immediate past.
Along with John Glover, alias "Smalllville's" Lionel Luthor, and Gerard Christopher -- the second title star of the syndicated "The Adventures of Superboy" -- she'ill be a guest at an annual Superman Celebration in Illinois on Saturday, June 9. She admits that for her, a big lure of the event is the name of its location: Metropolis.

On May 27, British film icon Christopher Lee turns 90 years old. (You may know him as Saruman, Count Dooku, the Man with the Golden Gun or even Count Dracula.) And he has no plans to slow down, as indicated by recent roles in the Oscar-winning"Hugo" and this month's "Dark Shadows" -- not to mention an upcoming return to Middle Earth with this December's "Hobbit." Lee is not just an actor, but a decorated military man and bombastic heavy metal singer, with a crazy family lineage to boot. To celebrate the legend's 90th birthday, we present 90 reasons why Christopher Lee is awesome. 1. He's the step-cousin of "James Bond" creator Ian Fleming, and was the author's first choice to play Dr. No in the film adaptation. 2. He's in the Guinness Book of...

2012 will be the first year that GeekTrant will invade WonderCon, mostly due to the fact that it was moved down to Anaheim, CA this year which is right in our backyard. We're all pretty excited about attending this year, as we've heard it's a much smaller more intimate version of San Diego Comic Con.
WonderCon is set to open on Friday, March 16th and run through Sunday, March 18th at the Anaheim Convention Center. If you plan on attending let us know, and maybe we can meet up and hang out for a bit!
I've put stars next to the panels we are interested in attending. Check out the schedule, and let us know what you are looking forward to seeing most!

[1] The endearingly geeky, impressively fast-talking Fine Brothers are at it again. The same guys who managed to sum up nearly five decades of Doctor Who [2] in six minutes and every single Best Picture winner through 2009 [3] in five minutes have now released "50 Animated Spoilers in 3 Minutes." (Spoiler alert: They actually make it in two minutes and thirty seconds. But I guess "50 Animated Spoilers in 2 Minutes and 30 Seconds" just doesn't have the same ring to it.) The Fines don't discriminate when it comes to ruining endings -- the video touches upon everything from enduring childhood classics like An American Tail and adult-oriented favorites like South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut to long-forgotten endeavors like Fluppy Dogs. Watch the video after the jump. If you're wondering why no Disney classics were included in "50 Animated Spoilers," it's because the Fine Brothers have already put out a whole other video containing "50 Disney Spoilers in 3 Minutes.

Take a closer look at the most diabolical villains ever captured on film and you may notice some fur poking out of the corner of the screen. Supervillains need love, too, and though they have little use for human beings -- aside from as expendable henchmen -- they save their cuddly, maternal side for their devoted pets. And through this special kind of unconditional love, the supervillains reveal their vulnerability and, ironically, their own humanity in the process.

I was seriously looking forward to writing this seriously random list. However, I neglected to consider the unfortunate existence of a vast array of children's direct-to-video sequels. As such, this idea of this list was easier conceived than written because there are a lot of sequels out there that most of us probably aren't aware even existed. And for good reason. In addition, it turns out that a few sequels that I'd wanted to suggest are either already in the works or stuck in development hell for the forseeable future, which would disqualify their inclusion in this list. For instance, a Monsters Inc. follow-up will eventually be here (although it will actually be a prequel), and a Who Framed Roger Rabbit? sequel is apparently on the way as well, but who knows how long it'll take before we see it. Therefore, the list of prospective suggestions for this list quickly dwindled.

Wonder
If I was going to devise an emotional spectrum for movies, I’d put Contempt on one extreme with Wonder on the other. Films that fall under Contempt tend to be the ugliest and most disenchanting that cinema has to offer, while those under Wonder are the most rejuvenating and magical. I’ve traversed the spectrum many times throughout my movie watching career, perhaps mixing my concept of Contempt and Wonder a little along the way.
When I was much younger, my imagination was captivated primarily by non-provocative movies like The Last Unicorn . Except for maybe The Secret of Nimh, The Last Unicorn is the animated film that I’ve watched more times than any other. In fact, before Beauty and the Beast came out, it’s one of the very few that I remember watching, period. As an adult, I’m not entirely sure what the appeal was.
