A year ago, Legendary Entertainment’s remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death (get it Here) went into production in Louisiana, with Barbie Ferreira of the HBO series Euphoria, Dacre Montgomery of Netflix’s Stranger Things, Josie Totah of the recent Saved by the Bell revival, Jermaine Fowler of The Blackening, and singer Charli Xcx making up the cast. In three separate realms, Tales of Kenzera begins as a story of loss. In the real world, Surgent Studios’s CEO and creative director, Abubakar Salim, lost his father, sparking a need to create an outlet for his grief. In the game itself, Zuberi, a young man of the Afrofuturist utopia of Amani, has lost his own father and is gifted a book of myths that was written by the man as he was dying so that his son could cope. Finally, the book’s story, and that of the playable narrative, concerns a young shaman named Zau who’s also lost his father.
However, Zau has a more extreme solution to deal with his grief: He seeks out Kalunga, the god of Death in the shape of a tribal elder, and attempts to bargain to bring his father’s soul back from the grave. Kalunga agrees, in exchange for...

The further you look back on history, the more you realize that the separation of fact and fiction is a relatively recent phenomenon. For the longest time, there wasn’t much of a difference between storytellers and historians (just look at how many people still think the Trojan War was a real event), and while this skewed perception of reality can have devastating consequences in the modern interconnected world, I think there’s some wisdom to be found in extracting a dose of truth from obvious hoaxes.
When it comes to media, one of the most enduring examples of this is Found Footage cinema, a whole genre that relies on our willingness to accept that what we see on-screen is real even if we don’t actually believe in ghosts, demons and witches. This decidedly modern form of filmmaking may have been popularized in the digital age, but the seeds...

Exclusive: Actor-comedian Jermaine Fowler is set to co-write, executive produce and star in an untitled single-camera comedy, which has received a script commitment at Fox.

Fowler started Brazilian jiu-jitsu training during Covid.
“When the pandemic hit, I had nothing to do,” he said during a January 2023 interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show. “I was bored, and I always wanted to try martial arts.”
On jiu-jitsu he said, “It’s a beautiful sport. It’s gruesome, but it’s so beautiful.”
At the time, Fowler was a white belt who had won one fight out of four.

Warner Bros. is building its own galaxy that is far, far away.
The studio has picked up the rights to Alien Legion, a star-spanning, sci-fi comic initially published by Marvel Comics, with the aim of building a homegrown space opera franchise.
Tim Miller, who directed the original Deadpool as well as Terminator: Dark Fate, is attached to direct.
Don Murphy and Susan Montford of Angry Films, the banner whose credits include Transformers and Real Steel, will produce along with Aaron Ryder.
Legion was co-created by Carl Potts, a former editor and writer at Marvel, and was introduced as part of the publisher’s creator-owned imprint, Epic Comics, in 1983. It became the line’s longest-running title, even outliving the imprint when it was moved to other publishers in the 21st century. Alan Zelenetz and Frank Cirocco are the other co-creators.

After a text crawl telling us what we’re about to see is based on a true story we launch into the story of serial killer Jakkariah “Jack” Harding who we see meeting his fate in the electric chair. Witnessing his execution are Ricky Dean Logan and Vicki Newton both of whom lost loved ones to Harding.
Unfortunately when they go to the cemetery to see him put six feet under they see something much worse.

Legendary Entertainment’s remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death (get it Here) is now filming in Louisiana, and Deadline reports that Jermaine Fowler of Sorry to Bother You, The Drop, Coming 2 America, and the upcoming horror comedy The Blackening has been cast in the movie. “Cocaine Bear” and “Euphoria” actor Aaron Holliday has joined a remake of “Faces of Death” from “How to Blow Up a Pipeline” director Daniel Goldhaber. The project began filming on Monday in New Orleans.
Holliday will join cast members Barbie Ferreira (“Euphoria”) and Dacre Montgomery (“Stranger Things”), who Legendary had previously announced. Helmer Goldhaber’s most recent film “How to Blow Up a Pipeline” is currently on international release, from a script co-written with Isa Mazzei, a regular collaborator who co-wrote his first feature, “Cam,” in 2018.
Holliday recently broke out in Elizabeth Banks’ buzzy horror comedy “Cocaine Bear” for Universal Pictures. He stars in the Lord-Miller produced comedy-thriller alongside Keri Russell, Ray Liotta, Margo Martindale, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Holliday recently wrapped a leading role in James Kimball’s feature debut “For the Night,” alongside Will Block and Odessa A’zion. He also appeared in the Season 2 finale of HBO’s “Euphoria,...

Legendary Entertainment is behind the Faces of Death relaunch, which has Dacre Montgomery (“Stranger Things”), Barbie Ferreira (“Euphoria”), Josie Totah (“Saved by the Bell”) and Aaron Holliday (Cocaine Bear) set to star. How do you remake Faces of Death? It sounds like Mazzei and Goldhaber have come up with an interesting approach for this one.

When it was announced last summer that Barbie Ferreira would not return for a third season of HBO’s hugely popular teen drama Euphoria, it left many wondering why such a fan favorite character like Kat would have to depart. With this, speculation began as to what, if anything, occurred on the set that would make Ferreira skip out after two successful seasons. Now, well over a year after the anticipated third season was confirmed, Ferreira is explaining that sometimes rumors are just that.
Speaking on the Armchair Expert podcast, Barbie Ferreira went against her goal of not getting involved in supposedly imaginary drama of Euphoria so she can tell fans to not believe everything they read. “For me, when people ask me about season two, it’s usually they come at me with, like, I was some sort of victim to season two and I’m always like, ‘No,...

Euphoria star Barbie Ferreira has addressed her decision to leave the acclaimed HBO drama following reports of a feud between her and showrunner Sam Levinson.
In August last year, the actor announced that she would not be returning as fan-favourite Kat in season three.
Many fans at the time expressed their disappointment on social media, arguing that her character “deserved better” after being given a smaller role in season two.
Rumours also emerged suggesting Ferreira and showrunner Sam Levinson had clashed on set. You can read The Independent’s timeline of the controversies surrounding the writer here.
Appearing on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast on Monday (3 April), Ferreira appeared to pour cold water on rumours of her alleged feud with Levinson.

I never imagined I would someday be writing about a Faces of Death remake that has stars of well-known TV shows in its cast, and yet here we are. About two years ago, we heard that writer Isa Mazzei and director Daniel Goldhaber, the team that brought us the Netflix release Cam, had been hired to craft a remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death (get it Here) for Legendary Entertainment and producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford’s company Angry Films. A few weeks ago, Barbie Ferreira of the HBO series Euphoria and Dacre Montgomery of Netflix’s Stranger Things were cast in the remake. And now Deadline has broken the news that Josie Totah, who had a role in the recent Saved by the Bell revival, has also signed on to be in Faces of Death.

Legendary Entertainment is behind the Faces of Death relaunch, and as we recently learned, Dacre Montgomery (“Stranger Things”) and Barbie Ferreira (“Euphoria”) also star.
The original Faces of Death, released in 1978, is one of the most infamous films of all time, allegedly showcasing real footage of real death. In actuality, of course, much of the horrifying footage seen in Faces of Death is staged, with gory special effects often being paired up with real footage to create the illusion of gruesome reality. Early found footage, in other words.

Exclusive: Josie Totah (Saved By The Bell) has joined Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria) and Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things) in the “reimagining” of 1978 horror Faces Of Death, which will begin filming this month.

The original, shown in a documentary-like style centers on pathologist Francis B. Gröss and includes a variety of footage showing gruesome ways of dying. Some of the most iconic scenes were faked, but it also included pre-existing video footage of real deaths or the aftermath of death.
Angry Films’ Don Murphy and Susan Montford will produce the update with Divide/Conquer’s Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath. Mazzei and Rick Benattar are executive producers and Cory Kaplan and Derek Bishé will co-produce.

Nancy Lenehan has joined the cast for ABC’s comedy pilot “Drop-Off,” the network announced Thursday.
The “A League of Their Own” actress will play series regular Marianne, the loving and warm mother of Julia (Ellie Kemper), herself a working mother who struggles to balance parenting with her career. Per the announcement, Marianne is a character who, after seeing the pressure of being a single mom, was more than happy to lend a hand in helping with the care for her grandchildren. But her attitude takes a shift for the selfish as she readies to reclaim her “me time.” Marianne isn’t afraid to embrace her other passions, including an affair with a suitor named Rene.
In addition to starring, Kemper serves as an executive producer for the pilot alongside Michael Showalter, who directs, and Julieanne Smolinski, who is set to write the pilot. Lenehan joins a growing cast list,...

Barbie Ferreira, one of the breakouts from HBO’s Euphoria, and Stranger Things actor Dacre Montgomery are set to star in Faces of Death, a reimagining of the 1978 cult horror movie being made by Legendary.
Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber, the team behind the 2018 psychological thriller Cam and How to Blow Up a Pipeline, are writing and directing, respectively, the reimagining.
Made just as home video was taking off, Faces had the conceit of a pathologist exploring gruesome ways to die via footage purportedly culled from around the world. In reality, most of the death scenes were staged, but the film had the exact effect its producers desired: outrage, revulsion, banning (although not in 52 countries, as hyped by the film’s makers) and, of course, minting money.

Welcome to the Ghostface Glossary, a guide to every horror reference and nod throughout the first five films of the Scream franchise.
After a lot of pausing, rewinding, and zooming in, as well as researching, we’re catching all of the many horror-specific references Williamson, Craven, and Co. included in this beloved postmodern slasher franchise. If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.
This guide will exclude homages from previous Scream films and their respective sequels— we’re only looking at outside horror franchises and inspirations, because any red-blooded Ghostface fan is likely already aware of those. (Goes without saying that the beloved faux franchise ‘Stab’(s) 1-8 will also not be counted, since, even though our neon green ‘Stab’ t-shirts and mock VHS tapes feel very real, it’s still a very fake franchise). Horror has always been one of the most controversial film genres. From the silent frights of "Nosferatu" to Wes Craven's 1970s shockers, horror films are the harbingers of moral panic and audience debate. Though American horror films have spurred plenty of moral outrage on our shores, it's not common for films to be banned outright in the United States. However, that doesn't mean that American horror films receive the same reception in other counties.
Countries have specific rules regarding censorship and movie ratings, leading some to ban certain American horror films for violating federal guidelines. Horror movies tend to be the most censored genre because of their depiction of violence (as well as sex and nudity), making some horror films unsuitable for viewing due to their explicit depictions of depravity. Censorship like this comes from ethical debates about whether or not pop culture influences the masses: Can violent movies make people more violent?...

When Tom Six's horror freakout "The Human Centipede (First Sequence)" was released in 2009, it was met with much disgust and ballyhoo. The poster boasted that the film was "100 medically accurate," something that no movie poster should ever boast.
The premise was wild and gross and repelled prudes while attracting seekers of the extreme. A mad scientist named Dr. Josef Heiter (Dieter Laser) -- clearly inspired by Josef Mengele -- kidnaps three hapless tourists and announces his dark plan while they are strapped to gurneys in his basement. Dr. Heiter intends to surgically connect the three people via their alimentary canals. He will connect one person's face to the previous person's anus, and remove tendons in their knees, forcing them to crawl. In so doing, he will create a human centipede. There is no stated reason for his experiment.

A new adaptation of “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” based on the Alan Moore graphic novels, is in the works at 20th Century Studios. The project is in early development at the studio, and intended to land on Hulu.
The film will be written by Justin Haythe, who wrote Jennifer Lawrence spy thriller “Red Sparrow.” Kevin O’Neill drew the series which ended after eight graphic novels in 2020. The hope for the new adaptation is to film the original books.
The new incarnation will be extremely faithful to the original graphic novel, which involves famous public domain characters like Allan Quatermain, Mina Harker from Dracula, The Invisible Man, Dr. Henry Jekyll, Fu Manchu, Captain Nemo and Professor Cavor teaming up to thwart a deadly attack on London from the air in Victorian times.

On any given night, over half a million people in the United States ‘sleep rough’. It means that they sleep in doorways, on streets, sidewalks, under freeways and on benches – often while people look the other way. Despite their indifference, The Man/Kind Initiative has been providing food and shelter to the homeless during the Covid pandemic.

The Pitch: If you're a fan of films that veer into the transgressive, the gory, and the deviant, you're probably familiar with the video nasties. Three 6 Mafia’s DJ Paul said the Verzuz fight between the Memphis group and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony wasn’t that surprising during an interview on the Fox Soul show The Mix (via AllHipHop).
While Verzuz battles usually feature plenty of good-natured roasting, the Three 6/Bone Thugs battle last Thursday, Dec. 2, actually got physical. Bone Thugs-n-Harmony member Bizzy Bone — who’d called out Three 6 for devil worshiping on Instagram prior to the event — threw out a few insults on stage before chucking a bottle at the group. More bottles and words were exchanged,...

“The Crown” alum Claire Foy will play Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg in a scripted series adaptation based on Sheera Frenkel and Cecilia Kang’s New York Times bestselling book “An Ugly Truth: Inside Facebook’s Battle for Domination.”
The drama, entitled “Doomsday Machine,” hails from Anonymous Content and wiip (“Mare of Easttown”), who recently closed a deal with Foy. The show will lift the veil on the relationship between Mark Zuckerberg and Sandberg and the obstacles Facebook has faced on its relentless quest for growth. Several journalists will serve as consultants to ensure the plot’s accuracy.
The series spans from 2016, beginning with the 2016 election and rise of disinformation, followed by recent revelations like Xcheck, a program that shielded important users, including former President Trump, from Facebook’s rules and regulations. The show will also cover how the company was aware of the mental health risks posed by Instagram to younger users,...

Prano Bailey-Bond’s début feature film Censor has received nothing but praise since its recent showings across genre movie festivals around the world and it’s theatre release in America. The movie tells the story of film censor, Enid, who views a strangely familiar video nasty. The film leads her to the mystery of her missing sister and soon enough the lines between fiction and reality start to blur.
It’s a mesmerising, dark nightmare of a movie that is a homage to Cronenberg and Giallo, almost as much as it is to the eighties and the video nasties of that era. If you have little knowledge of this or the term the video nasty, there’s plenty of material to read or watch. Including a favourite of mine – Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide documentary.
