James Stewart, more affectionately known as “Jimmy” to his fans, was an Oscar-winning performer who became famous for his polite, gentle screen persona, often playing the aww-shucks boy next door. Yet he also showed his range with a series of performances that found him playing against type. Let’s take a look back at 25 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1908, Stewart earned his first Oscar nomination as Best Actor for playing an idealistic young senator in “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” (1939), which firmly established him as the patron saint of the common man. He clinched his one and only victory the very next year for “The Philadelphia Story” (1940), playing a tabloid reporter who stumbles into the marital strife of a high society couple (Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant).
After serving in WWII, Stewart returned home to play George Bailey, a businessman contemplating suicide on Christmas Eve,...

Finn Wolfhard’s second collaboration with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, hits theaters in less than ten days, but the young actor has already reunited with the writing duo for a third time on the set of their highly anticipated drama, SNL 1975. If that wasn’t enough, the Canadian performer is also hard at work on Stranger Things 5, the final season of Netflix’s most beloved series to date.
After the tragic death of Ghostbusters co-creator Ivan Reitman in February 2022, Jason Reitman eventually relinquished Frozen Empire’s directorial duties to his writing partner on these two most recent Ghostbusters films, Kenan. After all, 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife was a personal experience for the filmmaker, as Ivan was by his side for most of its production as well as its release. The 2021 sequel to Ghostbusters II (1989), which is about the family of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) coming to...

Netflix is teaming up with Sonia Friedman Productions to produce the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which is “rooted in the mythology” of the hit streaming series Stranger Things and officially opens at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End tonight, December 14th. According to Deadline, if this one is well received, it might be the first in a trilogy of Stranger Things stage plays!
Deadline hears Stranger Things: The First Shadow “will be the first instalment in a trilogy exploring the dark underbelly of Hawkins, Indiana. Breaking Baz can reveal parts two and three are set to follow the inaugural play in two or three year intervals, according to insiders associated with the production. The stage sequels will launch in London first. Meanwhile, there are already plans for Stranger Things: The First Shadow to transfer to Broadway.” Of course, this all depends on the reviews and box office receipts,...

The fifth and final season of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things was just about to start filming when the writers strike hit back in May. But now that the writers strike – and the actors strike that followed it – has come to an end, series creators The Duffer Brothers are preparing to head into production on Stranger Things season 5 at the start of January. But as they get ready to start filming, they took a moment to talk to The Guardian… and while the conversation was primarily about the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, they also mentioned that the new season of the show will be like “season 1 on steroids” and the biggest the show has ever been.
Matt Duffer told The Guardian, “This season – it’s like season one on steroids. It’s the biggest it’s ever been in terms of scale, but it has been really fun,...

Heading into the 81st Golden Globe Awards, legendary performer Harrison Ford is eligible for two different small screen prizes – Best TV Drama Actor and Best TV Supporting Actor – thanks to his respective turns on the inaugural seasons of “1923” and “Shrinking.” These possible dual bids would come 22 years after he was named the 48th recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille career achievement award and make him a proper Golden Globe competitor for the first time since 1996. Given the fact that 33 other DeMille awardees will have preceded him in subsequently landing regular nominations, it only makes sense to analyze those instances to determine just how great his chances of victory at the 2024 ceremony really are.
Until “1923” premiered on Paramount Plus last December, the 81-year-old Ford had never appeared in a regular capacity on a TV program of any kind. Within six weeks, however, he was officially a multi-series star showcasing...

It’s called Stranger Things: The First Shadow and written by Kate Trefry, a writer and co-executive producer on the series, from an original story by Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, Jack Thorne (Enola Holmes) and Trefry.
Emmy, Tony and BAFTA winner Stephen Daldry (The Crown, Billy Elliot) will direct, with co-direction by Justin Martin. Netflix, making its first foray into live theater, and Sonia Friedman Productions are mounting the play, with series executive producer Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps serving as associate producer. The formal announcement comes a day after a cryptic teaser released on social media Tuesday. No casting has been announced yet.

Once upon a time, in the summer of 2016, Netflix debuted a sci-fi/horror ’80s homage from Shawn Levy and the Duffer brothers. Little was known about “Stranger Things” ahead of its premiere, and then the eight-episode season gripped the nation and world.
Beyond the endearing nostalgia, the series boasted an intriguing, layered mystery and a dynamite cast comprised mainly of breakthrough child actors. Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, and Caleb McLaughlin became household names and forces of talent; Winona Ryder wowed audiences with her performance as Joyce Byers, and David Harbour became one of TV’s preeminent dads. Waffles and nosebleeds and D&d were changed forever. When the series concludes it will have run for almost 10 years and five seasons, the last of which have some of Netflix’s longest runtimes and largest production budgets.

Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins was honored for more than five hours during a London concert on Saturday night, but the highlight of the evening was the late artist's 16-year-old son, Shane Hawkins, playing drums with the band during an emotional rendition of "My Hero." The "Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert" aired on CBS and is streaming now on Paramount+. Throughout the evening, several different drummers stepped up to play for Hawkins, with Shane rounding out the lineup for the last performance of the night.
Hawkins died on March 25 in in Bogotá, Colombia, after complaining of heart pains. The drummer was 50. In June, Hawkins's wife, Alison, shared a statement about her husband's passing on Twitter. "As Taylor's wife, and on behalf of our children, I want to share how much you meant to him and how dedicated he was to 'knocking your socks off' during every performance," her statement read in part.

The actors on Stranger Things are household names now—but it all started with a first audition. When the Netflix sci-fi series started in 2016, nobody had ever heard of Hawkins, Indiana and the Upside Down sounded like a pineapple dessert. For casting director Carmen Cuba, the process of finding the right actors to inhibit the roles was a monumental task. Cuba and series creators Matt and Ross Duffer knew that the show needed some heavyweight child actors, so she knew approaching unknowns wasn't going to cut it. "This was not going to be that. It was going to be such hard work. It was going to be months on end and very specific dialogue," Cuba revealed to Vanity Fair. "That...

Poor Max.
Stranger Things Season 4 Episode 4 focused on her fight to free herself from Vecna's curse. It's been a rough season for the youngster, so it was a surprise she made it into Stranger Things Season 4 Episode 5 in one piece.
For someone of Max's age, it must have been harrowing to consider the fact that Vecna can strike at any moment. Writing those letters to everyone wouldn't have been an easy task, but Max soldiers on, despite the odds stacked against her.
There is still much we don't know about Vecna, but knowing Victor Creel survived left us with two scenarios, and thankfully, it sounds like we have a pretty solid solution to save people... for now.
The events in the cemetery were nail-biting because it was the perfect opportunity to kill off a beloved character, and honestly, I figured Max would be hit by a bit of the house...

The horrors in Hawkins are heating up in episode 3 of the fourth season of "Stranger Things," and that means there's plenty more creepy (and fun!) Easter eggs to search for. The first two episodes were chock full of pop culture goodies and self-referential nods, though the third episode is just a bit more subtle. After two mysterious deaths in Hawkins, the intrepid teenagers we've followed for three seasons are doing their best to investigate. The "Stranger Things" Scooby gang know that the surreal can be absolutely real, and their experiences with the Upside Down and the battle of the Starcourt Mall will serve them well. Episode...

The young adults of “Stranger Things” are dealing with a lot over the course of Season 4. There’s the looming terrors of graduation for Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), the crushing work of managing a video store for Steve (Joe Keery) and Robin (Maya Hawke) and the threat of a paranormal serial killer Vecna murdering the townspeople of Hawkins. But perhaps no issue weighs on the four more pressingly than their love lives, which are in total disarray at the season’s start.
For Nancy and Jonathan, the main issue in their relationship is distance. After three seasons as one of the main “Stranger Things” duos, the two are separated by thousands of miles, with Jonathan living in California with his family while Nancy stays in Hawkins. According to Heaton, over the course of the season, Jonathan struggles with the distance between them in a way that’s...

Will everyone survive Vecna's reign of terror?
Stranger Things Season 4 Episode 2 lifted the lid on the mystery as the body count increased.
Fred and Nancy teaming up to embark on a mission to the crime scene was never going to end well, and this show's knack for not killing off characters of note earmarked him for death from the get-go.
I appreciate the way Nancy's tenacity helps her chase stories.
She had a rough go of it on Stranger Things Season 3. Hopefully, whatever story she manages to spin from the killings in Hawkins on Stranger Things Season 4 gets her the notoriety she deserves.
That being said, Nancy knows things go bump in the night in Hawkins, so making her way to the crime scene without her closest allies was a bad move. Call it an oversight, but these things tend to bite you.
Fred's death was well-executed and chilling. He...

Netflix hasn't had a great year.
The streaming service is increasing prices, considering implementing ways to combat password sharing, and losing subscribers in key markets.
Stranger Things Season 4 should represent a beacon of hope for the service because the decision to split the season into two parts might well entice people who have left the service to return for two months.
The good news is that the Duffer brothers deliver another addictive outing with Stranger Things Season 4.
After an almost three-year wait between seasons, a lot is riding on the newest batch of episodes to impress viewers. After watching the first seven episodes, the series forges a new and notably darker path.
Thematically, Stranger Things has always been dark, complete with glimpses of light.
Stranger Things Season 4 is shrouded in darkness throughout all seven chapters screened for critics as the characters face very different hurdles than before.

Ahead of Friday’s debut of “Stranger Things” Season 4 Volume 1, Netflix has unveiled one last trailer for the long-awaited new season. And fans of the Upside Down will be pleased.
“Don’t try to be heroes. There is no shame in running,” voiceover begins as the trailer shows visuals of the series’ main characters doing the exact opposite of that. Hopper is in a Russian prison fighting for his life, while the kids are seen in various displays of preparing for battle — including inside the Upside Down.
Indeed, the most striking shot of the trailer transitions from one set of characters riding bikes in Hawkins to another set of characters riding bikes in the Upside Down, promising a substantial trip to the otherworldly dimension that has been the source of so many headaches for the show’s main characters.

Charlie Bronson cashed in big with this lightweight action thriller co-starring Jill Ireland and Robert Duvall. Master Of None, Love, The Ranch, Grace And Frankie, Bloodline, Narcos and more. These Netflix Originals all deserve recognition...
Netflix Originals are a strange beast because they're not always on Netflix and they're not always original. Take a glance at some of the properties currently touted as being a Netflix Original: Scream, Orphan Black, and Better Call Saul. Each originally aired on a separate channel and were made by a different production company.
While some of the shows that aren't real Netflix Originals are excellent, for the purpose of this article we'll be casting our eyes over the productions made by Netflix available solely on Netflix. We'll confine things to TV for now, although some of Netflix's cinematic output is well worth a watch (The Fundamentals Of Caring and Tallulah are excellent starting points).

Teresa Wright and Matt Damon in 'The Rainmaker' Teresa Wright: From Marlon Brando to Matt Damon (See preceding post: "Teresa Wright vs. Samuel Goldwyn: Nasty Falling Out.") "I'd rather have luck than brains!" Teresa Wright was quoted as saying in the early 1950s. That's understandable, considering her post-Samuel Goldwyn choice of movie roles, some of which may have seemed promising on paper.[1] Wright was Marlon Brando's first Hollywood leading lady, but that didn't help her to bounce back following the very public spat with her former boss. After all, The Men was released before Elia Kazan's film version of A Streetcar Named Desire turned Brando into a major international star. Chances are that good film offers were scarce. After Wright's brief 1950 comeback, for the third time in less than a decade she would be gone from the big screen for more than a year.

“The truth is I’m just an old veteran character actor” says Robert Englund as we sit down to discuss The Last Showing, his latest foray into genre cinema. To find one standing opposite the genial and softly-spoken man who devoured so many hours of sleep by searing to the mind the menacing image of claws piercing first the mattress and then the torso, can only be described as ‘surreal.’ As these words flow onto the page there is a realisation that the reason horror cinema earns our affection was so eloquently phrased by Emily Berrington when she said, “There is a desire to feel that tiny part of your mind that otherwise doesn’t get tapped into.” By touching our sensibilities in a way that we crave, these terrifying encounters remain some of the most evocative and defining moments of the human experience, and therein cinema is our fix.

During the mid-’70s TV mystery boom, CBS followed The NBC Mystery Movie’s “wheel series” concept and introduced The New CBS Tuesday Night Movies, rotating different 90-minute detective shows in and out of the same time-slot. At the start of the 1973-74 season, one of those regular Tuesday Night shows was Hawkins, starring Jimmy Stewart as a country lawyer—a sort of proto-Matlock. Alternating with Hawkins? Shaft. That’s right: Shaft, a TV version of the 1971 blockbuster film that helped initiate the “blaxploitation” boom. The TV Shaft starred Richard Roundtree, same as the movies, and it sported ...

Robert Pattinson’s Tyler Hawkins in Allen Coulter’s romantic drama Remember Me (above, with Emilie de Ravin, Pierce Brosnan) has been compared to James Dean’s characters in the 1955 classics East of Eden and Rebel Without a Cause. Created by Will Fetters, the early 21st-century Tyler feels he’s misunderstood by his wealthy father (Brosnan), has a troubled relationship with a young woman (de Ravin), and is undecided about his future. Dean’s thoroughly misunderstood mid-20th-century characters have serious issues with both parents, have budding love affairs with young women (Julie Harris, Natalie Wood), and would probably have difficulty spelling the word “adulthood.” Rebelliousness against accepted social values and tragedy of some sort or other are to be found in all three films. In an [...]...
