The Guardians (2017)
10/10
Beautiful and subtle film making at its best.

This is a beautiful film paced to follow the lives of the women of a french farming family as they struggle through the distant horror of world war one. It is set over some five years as the men of the family are sent to fight in the trenches and the survivors eventually return.

Les Guardiennes is a modern french masterpiece and not for the impatient viewer expecting the standard war film fare (noted dismally low scores from such viewers on IMDB)

Perfectly cast and wonderfully acted.

The changing seasons of the french countryside fills the expansive frame and is beautifully captured by DoP Caroline Champetier. When the camera moves, She gives it a graceful unhurried and unobtrusive motion that ebbs and flows perfectly with the action.

A must see movie for any aspiring filmmaker.
