Mr Bates vs. The Post Office (2024)
Brilliantly cast and gripping drama
Very much deserving of its present rating of 9 on IMDB.
Finally the full extent of the cruel Post Office and Fugitsu cover up is revealed to the British Public.
A cover up in which Post Office management prosecuted hundreds of postmasters, forced them into poverty to pay non existent shortfalls and put many in prison.
The facilitators of the scandel, Fugitsu seem to have got away scott free. They were payed over a billion pounds to set up and run the faulty 'Horizon' system and payments are still ongoing for 2024.
When is our government going to sue Fugitsu and properly compensate all of the postmasters that were prosecuted?
If you don't already know the full story, it would be best not to watch the associated documentary until you have seen the drama!
Ghosts: A Christmas Gift (2023)
Rushed and clumsy end to an outstanding series.
I simply cant hide my disappointment.
Ghosts has been such a brilliantly written and gentle sitcom over all five seasons, but this Christmas special should never have been made.
It would have been far better to have simply left things open and on a high after series 5. This is the lesson that should have been learned from now classic sitcoms such as 'Fawlty Towers or 'Father Ted'.
We really didn't need everything wrapped up in this heavy handed way. It might just about have worked in a one hour slot giving the audience a smoother ride to the cheesy ending.
Sadly it felt unbelievably rushed, over sentimental and worst of all pretty humourless, although in fairness the very last shot did raise a smile.
Les gardiennes (2017)
Beautiful and subtle film making at its best.
This is a beautiful film paced to follow the lives of the women of a french farming family as they struggle through the distant horror of world war one. It is set over some five years as the men of the family are sent to fight in the trenches and the survivors eventually return.
Les Guardiennes is a modern french masterpiece and not for the impatient viewer expecting the standard war film fare (noted dismally low scores from such viewers on IMDB)
Perfectly cast and wonderfully acted.
The changing seasons of the french countryside fills the expansive frame and is beautifully captured by DoP Caroline Champetier. When the camera moves, She gives it a graceful unhurried and unobtrusive motion that ebbs and flows perfectly with the action.
A must see movie for any aspiring filmmaker.
The War of the Worlds (2019)
Not worthy of HG Well's title.
Complete twaddle, so disappointing.
A few character names survive, there are aliens in tripod fighting machines, lots of people spontaneously catch fire, but that is where the similarity ends.
The scriptwriters have thrown away all that was excellent in HG's writing and replaced it with a cuckoo of a script that will make you cringe.
So much BBC / licence fee payers money has been spent, the cast valiantly act their hearts out, the production looks amazing but with this substitute storyline this is more disappointing than getting socks for Christmas.
