Prolific screenwriter Anya Beyersdorf says her excitement level has gone through the roof as she collaborates with director Rachel Ward on one of the segments of the ABC’s female-driven Shakespeare Now anthology.
Enjoying a career high, Beyersdorf is also working on an Every Cloud Productions’ drama and developing multiple projects with writer-director Miranda Nation, Aquarius Films, Truant Pictures and US director Alexis Ostrander.
“I have had a privileged, lucky lockdown,” she tells If. “I think I would have gone mad if I didn’t have all these scripts and virtual writers’ rooms. It’s kept me connected and doing meaningful things.”

Durban — Buzzy competition titles and late-night bidding wars might be a staple at some of the world’s biggest film festivals, but sales agents at the 9th edition of the Durban FilmMart (Dfm), which ran parallel to the Durban Int’l. Film Festival this week, said the value of attending the continent’s leading market and finance forum is instead about what one described as “playing the long game.”
“If you’re looking at this as a place where people are selling, categorically not, because the buyers aren’t here,” said Todd Brown, head of international acquisitions at Xyz Films. What drives the Durban mart is “not the selling end, it’s the discovery end.”
He continued, “For me, it’s across the board. I’m looking for directing talent. I’m looking for people who are strong screenwriters. I’m looking for producers who have an interesting eye, and a smart sensibility,...

Pacific Rim Uprising is a cut above the standard heavy-metal action blockbuster, with a wealth of visual detail and even an occasional pulse of intelligence beating beneath all of the mayhem. But it’s still a profoundly silly movie, so keep your expectations in check and you’re likely to have a decent time with it.
Pacific Rim Uprising is set a decade after the climax of the first film, when Stacker Pentecost (as played by Idris Elba) had sacrificed himself shutting off that bottom-of-the-sea gateway between Earth and that nasty alien dimension that kept serving up those skyscraper-stomping beasts known as Kaiju. Production on the Kaiju-battling Jaegers, the equally-immense robots controlled by pilots positioned inside their heads, has continued. Our hero for the sequel is Stacker’s son Jake (John Boyega), introduced as a grifter, cheating those looking for weapons and war relics. He’s convinced by his long-lost...

A teen school boy discovers a hidden, magical world right beneath his nose in Charlie Human's cult South African novel Apocalypse Now Now and if that brings a certain bespectacled boy wizard to mind, well, let's just say that South Africa is significantly less genteel than is jolly old England. Human's novel - and, yes, that is his actual, real name - is far more John Dies At The End than Harry Potter as it sends its protagonist careening through a frequently bizarre and often profane world ... a world so deeply fucked up that it's best hope of salvation is a teenage sociopath. Snarky, monster-porn-dealing teen, Baxter Zevcenko, might be a serial killer. His girlfriend, Esme, is missing, and he’s the prime suspect. To...

Variety has reported that The Imitation Game's director Morten Tyldum will direct the adaptation of The Shining Girls by South African novelist Lauren Beukes. The story in the novel was about a serial killer who stumbles into a derelict home in Depression Era Chicago. The home opens up to other eras and drives him to hunt down and kill women in these different time periods, leaving behind momentos at the crime scene that do not match the era. In present day Chicago a young woman is putting together the pieces and find out who his final victim will be to complete his collection. I read The Shining Girls after I found her lending a quote to Charlie Human's Apocalypse Now Now and Kill Baxter...

Good news out of South Africa yesterday. Variety reported that South African author Charlie Human's urban fantasy novel Apocalypse Now Now will adapted to film by District 9 and Chappie writer Teri Tatchell. "South Africa has always pushed through the usual limits of my imagination and 'Apocalypse Now Now' is no exception," Tatchell said. "Charlie has actually upped the game and obliterated them all altogether."The novel centers on the kingpin of a smut-peddling high school who's dating the girl of his dreams. After she's kidnapped, he and a supernatural bounty hunter are plunged into the increasingly bizarre landscape of Cape Town's underworld to save her while facing a brush with the Apocalypse.Apocalypse Now Now will be a South-African Canadian co-production. And what is the Canadian connection? Why...
