There’s no denying that Steven Spielberg has had a massive impact on pop culture for decades, and perhaps the ultimate living document of this fact will end up being the 2018 film “Ready Player One,” based on the fan favorite novel by Ernest Cline and seeped in references to classic ’80s pop culture, while also depicting a grim view of the future.

During the Warner Bros. presentation at Comic-Con on Saturday, July 22, the legendary director (making his third-ever appearance in Hall H) was asked why he was fascinated by Cline’s novel. “It’s the most amazing flashforward and flashback at the same time — to a decade I was very much involved in as well as a future that I think is out there awaiting all of us whether we like it or not,” he said.

The trailer for “Ready Player One” just premiered at Comic-Con, and with it our first look at some of the far-flung characters in Steven Spielberg’s journey through the world of video games. Freddy Krueger and the DeLorean from “Back to the Future” both feature in the trailer, but the character drawing strongest reactions is undoubtedly the Iron Giant.

“The Iron Giant plays a huge role in the movie,” Spielberg said of the beloved robot voiced by Vin Diesel in the 1999 animated classic. That came as good news to many:

Ready Player One looks honestly mind-blowing. One of the first shots in the Vr Oasis was the Iron Giant.

Steven Spielberg spent much of the last decade directing family adventures (“Tintin,” “The Bfg”) and historical dramas (“Bridge of Spies,” “War Hors,e” and “Lincoln”). You’d have to go back to “War of the Worlds” in 2006 to find the last pure Spielberg science-fiction blockbuster. Fans of “E.T.,” “Jurassic Park,” “Minority Report” and “AI Aritical Intelligence” fans have been waiting for sci-fi Spielberg to return, and he’s finally ready with next summer’s “Ready Player One.”

When it comes to the world of composing for films, it’s most definitely a man’s world — but this year there’s one woman who is a part of the conversation: Mica Levi, a.k.a. Micachu. Let’s get to know the 29-year-old talent that is garnering Oscar attention this year for working on Jackie and see where this talent fits into Academy Awards history.
Micachu, the daughter of two musicians who began writing and playing music at the age of four, is an English multihyphenate — singer, songwriter, composer, and producer — best known for creating experimental music in the band Micachu & The Shapes. The Surrey native has released six mixtapes, six albums (two of which were soundtracks — more on those later), and, while at Guildhall School of Music & Drama, even wrote an orchestral piece for the London Philharmonic Orchestra...

Many consider Dmitri Shostakovich the greatest composer of the 20th century. Born September 25, 1906, he might not have lived past his teens if he hadn't been talented. During the famines of the Revolutionary period in Russia, Alexander Glazunov, director of the Petrograd (later Leningrad) Conservatory, arranged for the poor and malnourished Shostakovich's food ration to be increased. Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1, his graduation exercise for Maximilian Steinberg's composition course at the Conservatory, was completed in 1925 at age 19 and was an immediate success worldwide. He was The Party's poster boy; his Second and Third Symphonies unabashedly subtitled, respectively, "To October". (celebrating the Revolution) and "The First of May". (International Workers' Day).
His highly emotional harmonic language is simultaneously tough yet communicative, but his expansion of Mahlerian symphonic structure, dissonances, sardonic irony, and dark moods eventually clashed with the conservative edicts of Communist Party officials. In 1936 he was viciously denounced by Pravda...

It's contest time again, and this one is quite impressive. We've partnered up with our friends at Well Go USA to present a chance to celebrate the theatrical release of Owen Harris's Kill Your Friends, starring Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road), on April 1 -- that's today! The film takes a look at the late '90s British music industry through the eyes of the savagely ambitious Steven Stelfox (Hoult). Apart from the comparisons to American Psycho, which are definitely appealing, the film also features an amazing soundtrack of BritPop and dance hits from bands like Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, Prodigy, and The Chemical Brothers. Kill Your Friends is based on the critically acclaimed book of the same name by John Niven, who also wrote the...

The music industry ain't pretty. It's a notion that's explored in "Kill Your Friends," bringing an almost "American Psycho" vibe to the story of one young man trying to make his mark on the '90s "Cool Britannia" scene that yielded Oasis, Radiohead and Blur. Read More: Tiff Review: 'Kill Your Friends' Starring Nicholas Hoult, Craig Roberts, James Corden & Rosanna Arquette Based on the novel by John Niven and starring Nicholas Hoult, Craig Roberts, James Corden, Tom Riley, Joseph Mawle, Georgia King, Ed Skrein, Jim Piddock, Edward Hogg and directed by Owen Harris ("Secret Diary Of A Call Girl," "Black Mirror"), this film follows a young man willing to go to extreme lengths to stay one step ahead in his job as an A&R man at a London record label. London, 1997; the British music industry is on a winning streak. Britpop bands Blur, Oasis, Radiohead rule the airwaves and Cool Britannia.

The sensational, overlooked film scores from the years 1990 to 1999 that really are well worth digging out...
The movies went through tumultuous and exciting changes in the nineties. Quentin Tarantino exploded onto the scene with Reservoir Dogs, Generation X gave rise to slacker marvels like Clerks, and blockbusters like The Matrix put the awe back into special effects.
However, the 90s was also a sensational decade for film music, gifting us classics including the likes of Jurassic Park, Titanic, Total Recall, Braveheart and countless others. But the sheer quality of these soundtrack treasures shouldn’t overshadow those undervalued hidden gems that demonstrate the extraordinary range and versatility of our finest film composers, ones that may have passed you by. So here’s our selection of those incredible works: ranging from the earworming to the unsettling, the melodic to the chaotic, these are the scores that simply demand your attention.

Crafting a compelling drama around the music industry has proven to be a difficult butterfly to pin for major studios – just ask Max Joesph and Zac Efron. But the underwhelming box office performance of We Are Your Friends has in no way dampened our interest in Owen Harris’ upcoming British drama, Kill Your Friends.
As the title suggests, this is a decidedly darker spin on the business, swapping out the glitz and glam of Hollywood for a British music industry at its prime. Buoyed by the genre-defining successes of bands such as Blur, The Stone Roses and Oasis, business was booming during the late 80s and early 90s, leading to an era of fame, fortune and gluttonous success.

Varèse Sarabande will release the Everest – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally and on CD September 18, 2015.
The album features the original music composed by Dario Marianelli (Atonement, The Boxtrolls). The score is great and it’s what makes the movie even more intense!
“My initial instinctive approach to the score, which our director, Baltasar Kormákur, liked and encouraged me to follow, was to have a calling voice, a distant siren call,” explained Marianelli. “It is at the same time a voice that represents the ancient goddess-like mountain, but also a luring and irresistible calling to one’s own destiny.”
Marianelli’s musical “siren call” was performed by singer Melanie Pappenheim. “The same tune that I wrote for Melanie was also played by two wonderful string players in many variations—Caroline Dale and David La Page, with whom I also have worked on several other movies,” he said. “There were also moments...

Following Giles Fraser’s excellent article (Money is the only God Tories want us to worship on a Sunday, 11 July), may I propose that we now rebrand as Sunday as “a day of contentment”. This would not only emphasise the benefits of connecting to and enjoying the natural world and the company of friends and family, but also provide an opportunity to truly enjoy, use and benefit from the material possessions we already have. This might also provide a useful antidote to the commercial pressures which build a constant sense of wanting things that we don’t need and of needing things that we don’t want.

One of our fastest rising young actors, Nicholas Hoult mainlined Mad Max: Fury Road with crazed energy as the shiny, chrome-faced Nux. He has X-Men: Apocalypse and Eran Creevy’s intriguing Autobahn on his dance card, but before either of those, Kill Your Friends will offer a showcase for his talents for black comedy. Here's a first look at him as Steven Stelfox in the upcoming adaptation of John Niven’s ‘90s-set novel, courtesy of the nice people at StudioCanal.Set in the murky, often chemically enhanced world of the music industry circa the Britpop era, Kill Your Friends follows Hoult’s A&R man as he rides the Cool Britannia wave through its Blur vs Oasis high point and down a deep, dark hole. Having given the history of the "New World" in Part I, it seems wise to preface Part II with some words about how the symphony is constructed. The movements are:
I. Adagio; Allegro molto II. Largo III. Scherzo: Molto vivace IV. Allegro con fuoco
Unusually, every movement starts with an introduction. The first movement's is the most famous: starts with a striking slow introduction that establishes the current of nostalgia for, or homesickness for, the composer's native Bohemia. Another reminder of this comes with the famotus flute solo -- or does it? Some have remarked on its similarity to "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," but this is not so much a quote as a paraphrase, so to speak; small bits of "Chariot" are elided into something new that mingles many flavors: African-America spiritual, yes, but also Native American music and Bohemian folk music, which share a pentatonic flavor.

After being away for ten years, director Jonathan Glazer returns with his first film since 2004′s Birth, his followup to debut Sexy Beast in 2000. The new project is Under the Skin, a sci-fi horror half-documentary that features Scarlett Johansson playing an alien, who drives around in a van picking up random Scottish men.
I sat down with Glazer in a roundtable interview to discuss his film, the importance of his star to the film’s meaning, his interest in the paradox of being human, and more. Some spoilers for the film do follow.
Under the Skin opens in Chicago on April 11.
Did the more overt plot details from the book disappear gradually over different drafts of the film? Or did you know to get rid of these components immediately?

Odd List Ivan Radford 7 Jan 2014 - 06:37
Last year may only be a memory, but its film themes linger in the mind. Here's Ivan's pick of 2013's best soundtracks...
Just a quick scan down the list below reveals an extraordinary breadth of genres and subject matters, from imposing, expensive science fiction films to quiet, intimate stories about men at sea on boats or outlaws breaking out of prison to be with their wives. Disparate though the films are, they're all linked by at least one common motif: their music is utterly brilliant.

The thing about Pierre Monteux's May 29, 1913 premiere of Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring), by Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, is that it's not just the anniversary of the first time a famous piece was played in public. It's the anniversary of the most famous scandal in music history (and ballet history).
The audience was so violently divided in their opinions of the performance that there was an actual riot; there are widely disparate accounts of the evening, and some say the police removed some audience members, so contentious did things become. The orchestra was bombarded with projectiles, and the audience's vocal disapproval (combined with Rite supporters' vocal disapproval of the anti-Rite faction's demonstrations) drowned out the music often enough that the choreographer, Vaslav Nijinsky, had to spend much of the performance standing in the wings shouting directions to the dancers,...

For a game coming out in May, Capcom are keeping details on Dontnod Entertainment’s “Remember Me” close to the chest. I’ve been following the game pretty closely, and a nine-minute gameplay video and a short trailer earlier this year notwithstanding, the hype train is getting off to a slow start.
Nevertheless, Capcom posted a developer diary today featuring Olivier Deriviere and John Kurlander, the game’s composers. A behind-the-scenes look at “Remember Me”’s orchestral score may not sound like much, but Deriviere is a good host and pulls a lot of interesting design elements into his discussion. He’s talking about music, sure, but fans will also learn about the combat design, visual style, and story of “Remember Me.”
Plus, he’s got a great French accent, guaranteed to give everyone the vapors.

Andy Barclay from the London Philharmonic Orchestra describes crafting a film score using only natural instruments – and spoons
"I always go to see films I've played on thinking, 'I'll listen out for that bit'; and then I get to the end and realise that I haven't listened to the music, which is a compliment because you shouldn't be. If you don't notice it, then it's probably been good," says the London Philharmonic Orchestra's Andy Barclay.
Barclay is a percussionist, and I'm meeting him at one of the final 20 or so sessions the orchestra did this autumn to record Howard Shore's Hobbit soundtrack – and that was just for part one. "If you feel like you've been pulled through a mangle backwards then the music's good and it's done its job," he says. In hindsight, it's a slightly unfortunate choice of words given the nausea-inducing quality of Peter Jackson's 48 frames-per-second film.

Over the past two days The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences listed both the score and song from Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as eligible for nominations in both the Best Score and Best Original Song categories for the 85th Academy Awards in February. I can’t even begin to fathom any of the movies in the Lord of the Rings trilogy without the soaring soulful works of Howard Shore. It undoubtedly stands as his most towering achievement to date. He won three Academy Awards® for his music for those films, two for Best Original Score, and one for Best Original Song. Shore has also won numerous other honors for his film work, including four Grammys and three Golden Globe Awards.
WaterTower Music has released The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Original Motion Picture Soundtrack today and once again composer Shore’s score is a triumph.

When fans of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy return to Middle-earth for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of three films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s earlier book, there will be plenty of familiar sights and sounds. Ian McKellen’s Gandalf plays a major role in this adventure, of course, and a few other favorite actors from Lotr return as well. But it’s the music that immediately washes over the audience like a warm blanket and reminds them that they’re “home” again. Composer Howard Shore, who won three Academy Awards for his work on the previous films,...

When playing games it’s more about the experience than just the looks. Yes, a game that graphically impresses always gets a lot of attention, but with a control system that annoys and with mediocre music part of the enjoyment can be impacted on. Music can be just as important as graphics for some, some may not even notice the music yet it still plays a part in their game, it sets atmosphere and it sets the tone of the scene. It’s arguable that music is just as important in a game as it is in a movie, it has the power to make or break it at times. The Hobbit’s Official Facebook page has released 17 new posters along with a little background on J.R.R. Tolkien’s characters. Safe to say Gollum needs no explanation – although I do like his snarly “Thief Baggins! Curse it and crush it! We hates it forever!” Advance tickets go on sale in 3 days.
