Fittingly enough, since the Oscars® just took place, this week sees the release of the eagerly anticipated "The French Connection" and its sequel "French Connection II." The first Academy Award-winning crime thriller is helmed by William Friedkin, known for several other critically acclaimed films like "The Exorcist" and "Bug." Friedkin did not direct the sequel, instead, John Frankenheimer ("The Manchurian Candidate," Reindeer Games") took over the reigns. In "The French Connection" Hackman stars as "Popeye" Doyle, a brash New York City detective who uncovers a heroin-smuggling operation. The car chase under the elevated train tracks is movie legend. Another film which was nominated for two Academy Awards was 1987's "Ironweed" starring Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep, two veterans who have stood the test of Hollywood. Streep was last in the critically acclaimed "Doubt" alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams and Jack Nicholson kicked the bucket along with Morgan Freeman in "The Bucket List.

The players: Director: Sean Anders, Writers: John Morris, Sean Anders, Cast: Josh Zuckerman, Amanda Crew, Clark Duke, James Marsden, Charlie McDermott
Facts of interest: Based on the book "All the Way" by Andy Behrens.
The plot: A loser who's never had a girlfriend before drives to Knoxville, Tenn. to hook up with a babe he met online.
Our thoughts: Sean Anders’ comedy “Sex Drive” is not as embarrassingly stupid as several other recent flicks of the same genre, but its conventional story line and dull characters prevent it from finding the road out of mediocrity. The movie is entertaining, sure, but its lack of originality causes great damage to what could have been a refreshing ride.

There's plenty to be pleased about this week as we get to spend time with both current and future presidents as part of an Ellen Burstyn double bill. There's also -- whisper it -- a movie based on a video game that might actually be worth seeing. Not to mention enough titular wordplay to make Richard Lederer's head spin. It's all just pun and games though, right?
"The Elephant King"
Built on the old adage that getting lost is the best way to find oneself, Seth Grossman's debut feature follows the travels of Oliver (Tate Ellington), a suicidal writer who's dispatched by Ellen Burstyn's frantic matriarch to the seedy bar scene of Thailand to bring back his brother Jake (Jonno Roberts) to face his considerable debts in the U.S. Once abroad, Oliver finds that he may be at odds with his brother, but...

Distributor Summit Entertainment, still trying to break into the mainstream and find a hit, sent out the roadtrip comedy "Sex Drive." Although, when their big screen production of Stephanie Meyer's acclaimed "Twilight" hits theatres this December, that will clearly mark their biggest success to date. Starring in what looks to have some hilarious spots, are Josh Zuckerman, Amanda Crew, Clark Duke and Seth Green. This is based on the book by Andy Behrens called "All the Way," although Zuckerman admits that he has never met "Mr. Andy Behrens" before. He told us in an interview at this year's Comic-Con: "I actually did read the book. I have never met Mr. Andy Behrens. He wrote the book which I think was very successful. I think it's the first book I'd seen that had a waterproof cover! When I heard that 'Sex Drive' was based on the book, I said 'Yeah,...

Another red band clip of "Sex Drive" has been released. This time, the video courtesy of IGN highlights on the scene where Ian Lafferty gets in trouble because of an additional piece attached to his donut costume by a group of bullies. Unaware of his mascot's appearance after a bully added the item, Lafferty approaches a man and his young girl to promote the donut shop, instead he gets knocked out, falls down the stairs and slides across the mall on the back of his costume.
Eighteen years old Lafferty is in love with his longtime best friend and about to head off to college, but that is the least of his problems. The true fact is he is a virgin. Trying to hook up with the hot babe he met on the Internet and determine to lose his virginity, he goes on a cross country journey with his friends...

What's "Sex Drive" about?
Sex Drive is another from the Summit Entertainment lineup offered at Comic-Con 2008. A film which, quite honestly, looks absolutely riotous with raving Amish added into the mix! Read on...
Based on the book All The Way by Andy Behrens, the story follows lLoveable underdog Ian (Josh Zuckerman) is the last American virgin. At least that's how it feels to him now that he's 18, about to go to college, and losing girls to his 14-year-old brother. Ian's always been the nice guy, the best friend... never the boyfriend. But his luck finally seems to be changing when he meets Danielle. She's everything he's ever wanted in a girlfriend — fun, sexy, and she really likes him. There's just one problem. She lives in Knoxville. And he lives in Chicago.

Three years ago, a filmmaker here in Arizona made a mockumentary about frozen food collectors and phony Christian rockers called Never Been Thawed. That filmmaker, Sean Anders, received a lot of press for his independent comedy, which enjoyed a very limited release.
Apparently, Never Been Thawed was a pretty good foot in the door, because I saw a poster and a trailer for Sex Drive before ever learning that it's also directed by Anders, who wrote the script with Thawed co-writer John Morris based on the book All the Way by Andy Behrens.
In its teen sex romp sort of way, Sex Drive looks like it could be fun. There are a couple of moments in the trailer - one involving a giant donut suit - that made me laugh, although I have to confess this one doesn't appear to be blazing any new trails or anything. Selfishly, it's more of a,...
