Todd Field’s “Tár”won another major critics award on Saturday, with the National Society of Film Critics naming the dark drama about an imperious conductor and composer the best film of 2022.
The win gave “Tár” a near-sweep of the major critics awards. The film won the top prize from the New York Film Critics Circle and tied with “Everything Everywhere All at Once” with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. The only other films to finish first with all three groups were “Schindler’s List,” “L.A. Confidential,” “The Hurt Locker,” “The Social Network” and “Drive My Car.”
Runner-up in the Nsfc best-picture voting was Charlotte Wells’ “Aftersun,” followed by Jafar Panahi’s “No Bears.”

The Rockaway Film Festival in Queens, N.Y. has announced its 2021 lineup for the Sept. 12-19 edition.
Coinciding with the opening of a new outdoor theater, the first in Rockaway in over 20 years, the festival will play 12 feature films and 38 short films with a focus on highlighting filmmakers from the Rockaway Peninsula and elsewhere in New York City. 2021 Sundance standouts like Jane Schoenbrun’s “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair,” Amalia Ulman’s “El Planeta” and Shaka King’s “Judas and the Black Messiah” will be featured, as well as a short film from King called “Mulignans.” On top of the newer films presented, the lineup also includes several older films, such as Cheryl Dunye’s 1996 film “The Watermelon Woman” and Ted Kotcheff’s 1989 film “Weekend at Bernie’s,” plus the 24-hour loop of the film cut by Jon Dieringer.

Known for his fantastical and folkloric animations, Jankovics' films like Johnny Corncob (1973) and Son of the White Mare (1981) helped place Hungarian animation on the map. Last year, Jankovics discussed his recently re-released Son of the White Mare with Christopher L. Inoa. Amazon has bought MGM for $8.45 billion. Mike Hopkins, senior VP of Prime Video and Amazon Studios, has announced plans to reimagine MGM's "treasure trove of [intellectual property]," which includes 12 Angry Men, Basic Instinct, and Raging Bull. Cristian Mungiu will be the Jury President for this year's International Critics' Week at Cannes. The festival's lineup is set to be announced on June 7. Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese has started production on his next film, supported by the International Film Festival Rotterdam's Hubert Bals Fund.

April 28 was opening night of New York’s first in-person film festival in more than a year. The 50th edition of New Directors/New Films opened with a screening of “El Planeta,” the black-and-white debut feature of Argentinian filmmaker Amalia Ulman, who also stars as a wayward fashion designer at the mercy of her mother. Introducing the film, Ulman joked that she was less nervous now that she had a little bit to drink.
“I’m very happy you’re all here,” she said . “Today was my first time going back to the theater after a year. I love going to the movies here in New York.”
That sentiment pervaded the sold-out audience at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade theater, but it also meant the 268-seat screening room could only accommodate 50. Current capacity limits are 33 percent; other regulations require one empty row between all occupied ones. An usher had to...

The near-apocalyptic tale of a crumbling village, haunted by illnesses and the supernatural, was announced as the first (and only?) theatrical run at Williamsburg’s repertory Spectacle Theater, and, as of today, is yet another prime addition to Factory 25′s slate. I’ll have more on the film’s unique distribution path from writer-director Aaron Schimberg and Spectacle programmer Jon Dieringer when the time comes, but till then, the rest of the country can expect a July VOD and iTunes release, with a theatrical rollout to follow.

Time Magazine posted the following video and an essay from Jon Dieringer, which takes a look at the short film spawned from Stanley Kubrick's 1949 photo-essay "Prizefighter" for Look magazine. Here's a snippet from Dieringer's piece: Alexander Singer and Kubrick had forged a bond over shared scholastic apathy and mutual respect of each other's extracurricular achievements -- Singer as editor of the school literary arts magazine, and Kubrick as the kid with a camera around his neck: "almost a caricature of what you'd imagine a teenage cameraman would look like," as Singer describes. When plans to photograph a feature-length cinematic adaptation of Homer's Iliad written and directed by Singer proved too ambitious, Kubrick struck upon the idea to instead translate one of his own photographic essays to the big screen. I think Ffa might be on to something and I am really glad to lend support. I urge filmmakers, market participants and festival folks and press to pay close attention.

As each industry event produced by the Film Festival Academy is specifically curated in light of the requirements of the hosting festival or organisation, the first theme of our event in New York is New York film programming, looking at all the very many different institutions – festivals, cinemas, museums, galleries – involved in programming specifically for New York audiences.
The second theme focuses on film festival form, and here again we're looking to kick-start a debate that will run on longer via the Film Festival Academy website and related blogs etc.

As the man behind the repertory cinema guide email and website Screen Slate, Jon Dieringer is a true cinephile's cinephile. His daily guide focuses on film and video screenings, gallery installations, and other events from a wide variety of venues across New York City. Most daily emails include an impassioned plea from Dieringer for his readers to go see a film screening later that night. Today, for instance, he suggests seeing "Son of Dracula" at the Film Forum. Below that is a robust list of other repertory and independent film screenings, followed by a list of galleries showing video and film work. In college, Dieringer was prepping to be on set, and he got started on film sets early. After college in Pittsburgh, he worked in various departments on the indie "Adventureland." On set, he was able to make connections with various department heads and the film's producers, including Ted Hope and Anne Carey.

Up first, we're joined by Jon Dieringer from ScreenSlate.com to talk about the surprise gem, "The Pit," from 1981. The film is about young Jamie, a freaky sex pervert kid whose only friend is his evil talking teddy bear. Also, there are subterranean troglodytes!!
Then we discuss 2010's "Super," written and directed by James Gunn, starring Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Kevin Bacon and tons more cool people. "Super" is the story of a man named Frank whose wife leaves him. To cope with the loss, he becomes a super-hero and horrible violence and whimsical fun ensue.
Finally, we learn that twelve assassins is theoretically possible, but 13 is silly, as we talk about 2010's "13 Assassins," directed by the controversial Takashi Miike. The film was nominated for Best Film at the Japan Academy Prize.

"Forget Kill Bill, Death Wish And Straw Dogs: here is a revenge fantasy you can actually relate to. At 12-years-old, Jamie Benjamin already has a CV of torture that would make Dawn Weiner blush: the hot librarian at elementary school tears up the erotic collages he makes with her photos; the cool kid at recess splits his lip open; Jamie’s nubile live-in babysitter only has eyes for an indifferent jock; and even the old woman down the street tries to mow him down with her motorized scooter (“he’ll probably grow into one of those hippies…”).
