Accepting the Writers Guild of America award for original screenplay on Sunday night, Daniel Kwan skipped past the typical thank-yous to his agent and manager and instead shouted out his strike captain.
“Get involved,” he told the crowd. “If you don’t have a captain yet, go find one… Let’s go give ’em hell.”
It was a fitting capstone on the event, which at times felt more like a labor rally than an awards show. The WGA is set to begin negotiations with the major studios in just two weeks, and the possibility of a writers strike may be as high as it’s been since the last work stoppage in 2007-08.
“Hold out for what you deserve!” urged “The Goldbergs” star Wendi McLendon-Covey, presenting the award for drama series. “We cannot do it without you! Hold out until the last minute!”
In recent weeks, WGA officials have been tamping down the rhetoric,...

Will Cate Blanchett fulfill the awards prophecy of winning an Academy Award every nine years? The two-time Academy Award winner of “The Aviator” (2004) and “Blue Jasmine” (2013) is a favorite to possibly win her third for Todd Field’s psychological drama “Tár,” in which she plays a lesbian conductor who begins to lose her grip on power and reality.
On this week’s episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, we sit down with Blanchett to discuss her work stunning transformation into Lydia Tár. In addition, she talks about working with co-star Nina Hoss and more. Listen below:
From Focus Features, “Tár” is set to a rhythmic beat of classical orchestration, marking writer and director Todd Field’s return to the director’s chair, 16 years after “Little Children” (2006) and 21 years after his debut “In the Bedroom” (2001).
The drama landed six Oscar noms — best picture, director, actress, original screenplay, cinematography and film editing.

The Daniels are on top of the world. There was a running joke between Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert during the first week of shooting “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” After a successful first read-through, and perfect shots and framework, the two would turn to each other and whisper, “this is nonstop entertainment.” And even though they weren’t successful in getting a cameo of their “Swiss Army Man” leading men Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano into the film, the joke is God’s honest truth.
On this episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, we sit down with “Everything Everywhere All at Once” directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. The dynamic duo talks about the origins of their collaboration which began in film school, assembling their outstanding cast and artisans ensemble and what’s next for them in the film and television space.

Despite representing Germany at this year’s Academy Awards for best international feature, “All Quiet on the Western Front” writer-director Edward Berger doesn’t feel national pride for the country.
“I don’t feel that because of the history,” Berger tells Variety. “I could never say I’m proud to be German. Those words don’t fit into our mouths, and rightly so. I would have a hard time thinking I would represent the country because I can’t speak for the entire country.”
On this episode of Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast, Berger discusses “All Quiet on the Western Front’s” nine Oscar noms — the second most of the year — and employing the most artisans of any non-English movie in history. Finally, he shares why he feels a responsibility to accurately portray Germany’s role in some of humanity’s most devastating wars. Listen to the full podcast below.

“Babylon” composer Justin Hurwitz knew the epic vision of his longtime friend and collaborator Damien Chazelle would be divisive. “It’s disappointing,” he tells Variety. “From the elephant poop through all the rest of the bodily fluids. I think we always knew the movie wasn’t going to be for everybody. It’s definitely disappointing that more people haven’t seen it in the theaters. I’ve read a lot of the reviews of people who absolutely love it. There are people who hate it. There’s a lot of in-between. I think it’s stunning. It’s not a conventional storyline.”

Colin Farrell is basking in the glow of delivering four acclaimed performances in 2022 and receiving his long overdue first Oscar nomination for “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Next, he’s gearing up to reprise his role as Oz — a.k.a. the Penguin — for the spinoff television series to Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” which he starts shooting on Feb. 28.
“It’s going to be an eight-part thing,” Farrell tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “Around Oz’s rise to power, filling that power vacuum created when Falcone was killed. Matt’s idea was to have the Penguin show begin about a week after the end of the Batman film. And if it works, if the trajectory is interesting, and the audience goes for it, and we do our jobs right, the second Penguin feature will pick up where the HBO show will end.”

The 2023 festival will take place Feb. 9-11.

Bill Nighy has not seen his latest feature, the Sony Pictures Classic release, “Living.” In fact, he hasn’t seen any of his films. “It’s not because I’m vain,” the actor says. “I gave up watching myself very early on because it undermined me to such a degree, that it made it harder for me to go to work again. I don’t learn anything, and it’s not helpful in any way. It’s probably a form of professional dysmorphia or something.”
Nighy has been earning rave reviews for “Living” ever since the film screened at Sundance last year. The praise has been pouring in, first from British audiences, and now international audiences. The actor is considered a frontrunner to land a best actor nod when Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 24.
All Nighy knows is that the film, and his performance, has resonated.

Friends for more than 20 years, “Rrr” stars N.T. Rama Rao Jr and Ram Charan say they relied on each another for the extensive shoot of S.S. Rajamouli’s Indian-Tollywood epic, which has taken global cinemas by storm.

They describe what it was like to be suspended in harnesses, and the experience of learning and synchronize the film’s signature (and now Golden Globe-winning) song “Naatu Naatu.” Listen below:
The three-hour action epic “Rrr” follows two patriotic but philosophically opposed men (Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr.) who team up to rescue a girl from British colonial officials in 1920s Delhi.

Taylor Russell devours every morsel of her time on screen in “Bones and All,” the new film from director Luca Guadagnino about teen cannibals. Russell plays the young, flesh-hungry Maren, and in a key scene where co-star Timothée Chalamet (as Maren’s love interest) makes a stunning confession about his past, the two unlock a vulnerability that was Russell’s favorite part of filming. “That scene had a lot of weight to it,” Russell recalls. “There was a levity there that was really beautiful, and I love watching Timmy [Chalamet] do his thing. You can only control so much and then you must let go and allow everything else to influence you.”

Guillermo del Toro loves cinema, and cinema loves him right back. First things first: Claire Foy has seen Season 5 of “The Crown.” The actor, who won two Emmy Awards for originating the role of Queen Elizabeth II in the first two seasons of the Netflix series, has since seen her role pass on to Olivia Colman and now, Imelda Staunton, as the show continues to cover the monarch’s later reign. And though Foy’s currently in Los Angeles to promote her new movie, “Women Talking,” she was able to watch a couple episodes on the plane on the way over, as she revealed to Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast.
Foy says it’s not strange to see other actors continuing on with the role. “It’s really not that weird,” she says, adding she’s met both Colman and Staunton in person and can now just enjoy the show as a fan. “I’m really pleased I actually get to watch it.

Todd Field was working as an actor on Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut” when star Tom Cruise took him aside. Cruise looked Field in the eye and told the budding auteur that he would one day be a director. “He basically pushing me onto the fighter jet,” Field recalls to Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “I said, ‘oh yeah, I went to film school.’ And he said, ‘no, no…you’re going to Direct.’ What are you going to do?”

Field, of course, did indeed eventually become a celebrated filmmaker. But 16 years have passed since his last film “Little Children” (2006) was released in theaters. Now, he’s back with his finest film yet, “Tár,” starring Cate Blanchett.

“Empire of Light” star Micheal Ward wasn’t nervous about having to perform a romantic love scene with his Oscar-winning co-star Olivia Colman during filming. However, Ward, 24, says that Colman, 48 was very nervous. Believe it or not, Colman’s decades-long career has never had her sharing a kiss with a man on screen. The set’s intimacy coordinator helped make the two relaxed and properly prepare for the film’s crucial scene. “It was basically making it into a dance,” Ward says. “We had counts and things [blocking] like that. After Nina Hoss received the role as Sharon in “Tár,” she happened to be in Budapest shooting Amazon Prime’s “Jack Ryan” — where her eventual co-star Cate Blanchett was also on location shooting Eli Roth’s “Borderland.” Hoss and Blanchett soon built a rapport and friendship that would become the foundation of their characters. After that, the German actress felt even more prepared to show her character’s strength: “You can easily make her the victim, but that’s too easy,” Hoss tells Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “Especially when you’re a phenomenal musician in your own right.”
Listen below:
On this episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, we sit down with actress Nina Hoss to discuss her work in the inventive drama “Tár,” working with her co-star Blanchett, her adorations in classic cinema and reading the incredible script for the first time. “I put it down...

Director Gina Prince-Bythewood knows you can’t win an argument on Twitter. That’s why she stays off social media platforms and chose not to engage with users that were attacking her, and the filmmakers from her box office hit “The Woman King” for taking license in its depiction of the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 17th to 19th centuries, and its role in the slave trade. “There was an absolute assumption we weren’t dealing with it,” Prince-Bythewood says. “So much of the argument is based on bad facts. So, what the ‘Wikipedia historians’ are parroting is history written from the wrong point of view.”

On this episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, we sit down with acclaimed filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood to discuss her historical epic “The Woman King” from Sony Pictures. She discusses the challenges of shooting and getting shut down during Covid,...

It might sound cliche, but Dolly de Leon is serious when she says Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” changed her life.
Because it did.
Filipino audiences have known de Leon from shows such as “Amy’s Mother” and “Mirabella,” while Western audiences might have seen her on the HBO Asia series “Folklore.” But the Neon release, out on Friday, it what has put De Leon on the map. “I’m getting better roles and better offers,” she says.
Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast caught up with de Leon to discuss her role as Abigail, how she built the character and working with Östlund. Listen below.
“Triangle of Sadness” is a wickedly fun satire and commentary on the ultra-wealthy, starring Charlbi Dean (the rising South African actor who died in August), Harris Dickinson, de Leon and Woody Harrelson. Östlund’s first English language film follows the characters as they go...

When Henry Winkler joined “Barry,” as the pompous, washed-up acting teacher Gene Cousineau, he soon asked series creator and star Bill Hader, “Am I playing an asshole?” But by Season 3, Cousineau has suffered a tremendous loss — at the hands of Barry — and it’s forcing him to do some deep introspection.
“I think the umbrella for Season 3 is, can a person change? It was a question Bill asked me in a scene in Season 2. And now it is for all of the characters,” Winkler tells Variety. “Is there atonement?”
On this episode of the “Variety Awards Circuit Podcast,” we talk to Emmy-winning “Barry” star Henry Winkler on how dark the show went this season, especially for his character, as well as what he hopes might come next.
But first, our Awards Circuit Roundtable discusses some of the key Creative Arts Emmys races coming this weekend, including animation and guest actor and actress.

When Emmy-nominated “Hacks” star Hannah Einbinder first read the Season 2 finale of her hit HBO Max comedy, she was concerned. After a season of plenty of animosity between aging comedy legend Deborah Vance (played by Jean Smart), and Einbinder’s character, the young writer Ava, it seemed like the season ended with everything wrapped up neatly. A little too neatly, at first, for Einbinder.
“I was very scared. I thought that I was going to be fired,” she tells Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “I was going through all of the panicky fear things. It’s kind of insane in retrospect, but I think I was a little too close to the case. Like, it really, really, really upset me. I was crying for a couple hours.”

The perils and plights of adolescence have long been a source of fascination for television audiences. That’s particularly apparent nowadays with Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Showtime, FX, and others vying for zeitgeist dominance with teen-focused dramas playing to a variety of creative strengths. As narratives have gotten more sophisticated overall across the TV landscape, it makes sense that the ways in which we look at stories about young people have also evolved. From “Never Have I Ever” and “Love, Victor” to “Yellowjackets” and “Stranger Things,” TV teens in 2022 are among some of the most rich ever written.

Liz Meriwether never got around to asking Amanda Seyfried if she was a “New Girl” fan. Meriwether, who created the long-running comedy, is also behind “The Dropout,” starring Seyfried. But Meriwether says she stopped talking about the show when too many people told her they didn’t even have a TV.
“I always took it to mean, ‘I have a television, but I’ve chosen not to watch your show,'” Meriwether says. “But I also got a lot of, ‘my girlfriend loves your show!'”
Turns out Seyfried did watch “New Girl,” and was a fan.
“I remember meeting Zooey [Deschanel] back when she started the show… And I remember being a big fan of hers because she got that balance between awkwardness and total deadpan truth. And you are the man of course behind the curtain,” Seyfried told Meriwether on the latest edition of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast.
