Syfy's 12 Monkeys isn't a huge departure from Terry Gilliam's film starring Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt but it does tell a unique and dynamic story (and has fantastic, complex female characters). Aaron Stanford, Amanda Schull, and Emily Hampshire star in the Syfy version which is set to debut its third season next year. And this time, a time travel expert will be along for the ride. Today they let us know that none other than Christopher Lloyd, of Back to the Future fame, will guest star. Syfy gave away some very interesting details about the character: "Lloyd will play Zalmon Shaw, a charming but deadly cult leader who preys upon other’s tragedies and losses in order to recruit new members into the apocalyptic cult the 'Army of the 12 Monkeys.' Shaw is the father of the series' most imposing villain, the enigmatic Pallid Man." While the...

Before he worked his way into our hearts as the lovable and iconic Emmett "Doc" Brown in Back to the Future, actor Christopher Lloyd was well-known for his work on the television series Taxi. He's appeared in a handful of television shows since then, but now it sounds like he's taking on his most high-profile TV role in some time: Deadline reports that he's guest starring in Syfy's time travel series 12 Monkeys.

Time is not on our side, especially in the era of “peak TV.” Perhaps this is why networks are hopping onto the time travel bandwagon. At this year’s network upfront presentations in May, four of the five broadcast networks plugged shows that revolved around a time travel element at their core.
Taking journeys through the fourth dimension is a concept that has appeared in fiction since the late 19th century, popularized by H.G. Wells’ novel “The Time Machine.” The continued appeal of time travel boils down to wish fulfillment: the desire to visit other eras like a tourist, the yearning to relive or change the past, the curiosity about the future and the ability to squeeze more experiences into our ephemeral lives.
Although Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan disagree on whether time travel will someday be possible based on our apparent lack of visitors from the future, that hasn...

I know, I know. The Syfy Channel hasn't had a really good rep in recent memory. Yeah, they were responsible for gems such as Battlestar Galactica and all those Stargate spin-offs, but they were also responsible for films like Sharknado. Look, I'm not trying to hate on you if you like Sharknado — I know there are a lot of people out there that enjoy B-movies and how ridiculous they are, but if you're looking for to a return to the quality of Battlestar or Stargate, well, 12 Monkeys is your answer.

This is more than a reboot of Terry Gilliam's 1995 film based on Chris Marker's 1962 short film La Jetee. In fact, in its early stages,...

Another amazing season's come to a close. Did you guess the identity of the Witness?
Madeleine Stowe's voice-over was the perfect way to bookend this year's narrative. 12 Monkeys Season 2 Episode 13 delivered in every way possible. This series continues to be one of the most well-written and acted shows on television.
Personally, I can't thank Syfy enough for giving us another season.
Clearly Cole and Cassie were not meant to live happily ever after in the past. That said, I had no idea what role Madeleine Stowe would be playing in the finale, let alone that she'd pull Cole back into the drama.
I'm honestly still not sure how she's connected to the mythology, but it sure was fun to see the original Kathryn Railly revisit the world of 12 Monkeys. Her cameo gave me the urge to dust off and re-watch Terry Gilliam's film, which I haven't seen in years.

TV shows that were inspired by movies have a mixed track record. Will the numbers go up this time around or will they fall? Cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned.

If you think watching 12 Monkeys can be a bit cumbersome at times (so much jumping through time!), just imagine what it must be like to star in the hit Syfy series. To be in actor in the series, which centers on James Cole (Aaron Stanford), a man from post-apocalyptic 2043 who is sent back in time to stop the evil Army of the 12 Monkeys from destroying the world, means keeping track of multiple time lines and the emotions your character is feeling throughout—even when you aren't filming in order. As Amanda Schull, who stars as Dr. Cassandra Railly, Cole's ally in the present day, explains it, she puts in some serious work to stay on top of things. "I take copious notes. Change the past. Save the future. 12 Monkeys will return to Syfy when season 2 premieres on April 18, and in order to ramp up the excitement, the network has premiered a thrilling new trailer that dives deeper into the past and all the mysteries therein.
Welcoming back Aaron Stanford as James Cole – a role made famous by Bruce Willis in Terry Gilliam’s seminal feature film from 1995 – season 2 is poised to hop between various eras over the past 60 years, from the present day to a dystopian future and everything in between. Amanda Schull also stars Cassandra Railly, a loyal ally to Cole in his battle against the Army of the 12 Monkeys.
Rubbing shoulders with the likes of The Expanse, 12 Monkeys has become a strong fixture on the network’s slate as it begins to double down on the science fiction genre.
An official logline describes the spinoff as so:

Sci- fi thriller 12 Monkeys first dropped on to TV screen in January 2015. Originally commissioned as a 13 episode series, a second series was almost immediately announced by Syfy in March 2015, following a very favourable response by viewers and critics alike due to it’s clever transversing of time and reality. Little over a year later and 12 Monkeys Season 2 is set to premiere this April, with an exclusive clip previewing the upcoming series found above.
Set in 2044 Season 1 introduced us to the character of James Cole (Aaron Stanford; X2, X-Men: The Last Stand), as he is sent back in time to help prevent the release of a deadly virus which has threatened the existence of humanity. Aided by a modern day expert in immunology, Dr Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull; One Tree Hill, Suits), they work together to thwart the evil conspiracy which has been concocted by a mysterious and malignant army known as the 12 Monkeys.

"The process to get this darn role was probably one of the longest auditioning processes that I've ever had," actress Amanda Schull tells Gold Derby in a video chat (watch below) about her work as Dr. Cassandra Railly on the hit SyFy series "12 Monkeys." As she explains, "They made me work for it and with every round and every incarnation of the script I loved her more and I needed to be her more." -Break- "12 Monkeys" is adapted from the Oscar-nominated 1995 film of the same name which won a Golden Globe for Brad Pitt. In the TV series, Schull plays a virologist sought out by time traveler James Cole (Aaron Stanford) to help him stop a virus destined to wipe out all mankind. Syfy is no stranger to taking risks, or making shows and movies with odd concepts, but basing a series on a cult-popular, 20-year-old, sci-fi film, which is itself loosely based on another film from the early ’60s, is… bold. 12 Monkeys is that bold effort, and apart from all the other problems inherent in such an beastt, there are a lot of fans you’re likely to irritate, and Syfy is already after a fair portion of the “rabid fan” demographic, just as a general rule.
In this spin on the tale, James Cole (Aaron Standford) travels back in time from a future that has been decimated by a plague. A clue from that future leads him to Dr. Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull), who he needs to lead him to Leland Goines (Zeljko Ivanek). The theory being that, given the only information we have, killing Goines will prevent the plague from happening.

20. Dead Man Walking
Directed by: Tim Robbins
Susan Sarandon earned herself an Oscar for her work in “Dead Man Walking,” a film directed by her then husband, Tim Robbins. She plays Sister Prejean, a nun who befriends a death row inmate named Matthew (Oscar nominated Sean Penn) as they confide in one another and build a convincing relationship as the days and hours tick down until his execution. Robbins intercuts the scenes with Sarandon and Penn with moments of the actual crime taking place, creating a storytelling rift that both supports and contradicts moments within the film, creating two very carefully drawn and developed characters. In addition to visiting him regularly, Prejean begins the crusade to find him a lawyer to make an appeal, doing all she can to delay his sentence being carried out. But, as she meets the families of the victims, she finds herself torn between right...

Syfy is trying to get its mojo back. With a noticeable dearth of quirkier selections on its line-up in the past few months, the network promised a return-to-form of sorts in 2015 (which pretty much means, “Hey you liked Battlestar Galactica, right?!”) They started with Ascension as a holiday mini-series event, which, despite some iffy writing and stiff acting, was twisty, entertaining television for most of its run. Now the network has 12 Monkeys, an adaptation of the Terry Gilliam film from the mid-nineties that not many people saw but everyone who did loved. And honestly, I could see the same fate befalling Syfy’s new effort if the show, beyond its pilot, manages to knock down the dominoes it sets up.

Syfy’s new time-traveling thriller 12 Monkeys will quickly differentiate itself from the 1995 film on which it is based by actually giving hope for the future. The series stars Nikita’s Aaron Stanford as time traveler James Cole, who hails from a decimated future and journeys back to present day in a bid to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will pretty much annihilate the human race in 2017. The catalyst for heading to the past comes after a team of scientists uncovers a message from virologist Dr. Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull) seemingly warning them that Dr. Leland...

In the first episode of Syfy's "12 Monkeys," post-apocalyptic time traveler and long-haired tough James Cole (Aaron Stanford) returns to the wasteland of 2043 disappointed that he still exists. Accomplishing his mission "didn't change anything," he tells Jones (Barbara Sukowa), the enigmatic leader of an effort to prevent the pandemic that has pushed humankind to the brink of extinction. "There were others. There are always others." Indeed, in both narrative and form, "others" loom large over the series, which sets itself the impossible task of living up to not one but two visionary filmmakers and, like Cole, comes up frustratingly short. "12 Monkeys" is not an exact replica of Terry Gilliam's 1995 film of the same name, which drew inspiration from "La Jetée" (1963), Chris Marker's revolutionary portrait of a world annihilated by nuclear war. Rather, the series re-imagines a similar universe: Cole leaps back and forth...

A lot of TV series based on movies are weak versions of their source material, and thankfully many of them disappear quickly and have no damaging effects. Once in a blue moon something like M*A*S*H or the second iteration of Parenthood comes along and is a good enough piece of pop culture in its own right. I’ve been expecting Syfy’s 12 Monkeys show to be the former, but after checking out the first nine minutes ahead of next week’s debut, I’m thinking it could at least be worth watching if not also another classic. Let it be known that I’m a humongous 12 Monkeys fan. It’s one of only a couple movies I ever went back and re-watched on the big screen immediately (as in very next showing, didn’t even leave my seat) following my first viewing. It works perfectly in the 127-minute time frame. But...

In the year 2043, a viral epidemic will devastate all of humanity and the only hope to survive the downfall of man is to go back in time and stop it before it can even happen. That is the premise of SyFy’s new television series based on the Terry Gilliam directed science fiction classic. The preview sets up the stage and makes it clear that although the series is taking concepts from the original 1995 film they are also making distinctive choices to set themselves apart. Aaron Standford stars as James Cole whose mission is to contact virologist Cassandra Reilly, played by Amanda Schull, but finds her two years too early.
