As Neil Young once sang, the now shuttered Participant is gone, but not forgotten.
Some of Tinseltown’s leading talents like Regina King, George Clooney, Ava DuVernay, Daniel Dae Kim, Martin Sheen, Regina King, Alfonso Cuaron, Matt Damon, Diego Luna and more have joined up with the National Domestic Workers Alliance to express “gratitude and pride” in the work put out by the Jeff Skoll-created shingle over the last two decades. At the same time, the A-Listers are imploring the ever increasingly conglomerated industry to keep their eyes on the social impact prize.
“As we say goodbye to Participant, we must underscore that values-based storytelling is needed now more than ever; to expand the room for debate, to open our hearts to experiences vastly different from our own, to immerse us in the beauty of humanity’s complexities,” the star-studded letter says. “And in the face of unprecedented change and uncertainty,...

John Ridley won an Oscar for his screenplay for 12 Years a Slave, but his projects since have been far less impressive. The new Netflix biopic Shirley, starring Regina King as Shirley Chisholm, should herald Ridley’s return to the realm of prestige fare. Unfortunately, the film all too often takes the easy way out, making it yet another biopic about an unforgettable person.
Shirley tells the story of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress, as she embarks on a campaign to receive the Democratic nomination to become President of the United States. Shockingly, despite her importance, there hasn’t been a major biopic about Chisholm yet, but this isn’t the tribute she deserves.
Unlike many biopics, Shirley is mercifully brief at under 2 hours long. However, perhaps ironically, this also causes the film to feel like a truncated, Wikipedia-esque telling of the details of Chisolm’s presidential campaign.

Between Slotherhouse arriving on Hulu, buddy comedy Shaky Shivers arriving on Screambox, and the theatrical release of Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls, this week belongs to the horror comedy. Horror comedies also happen to make for perfect Halloween viewing, as they frequently offer tricks and treats in the form of laughs and scares. Naturally, this week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror comedies, emphasizing lesser-seen titles.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

More than a month after Paul Reubens died at age 70, fans of the Pee-wee Herman actor now know his cause of death. Reubens died of acute hypoxic respiratory failure as he battled acute myelogenous leukemia and metastatic lung cancer, according to a death certificate obtained by The Blast. Hypoxic respiratory failure, also called hypoxemic respiratory failure, occurs when a person does not have enough oxygen in their blood, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Acute myelogenous leukemia, meanwhile, is a cancer in which one’s bone marrow creates immature white blood cells, which later become myeloblasts, per Healthline. Reubens — who played the childlike, bow-tied Pee-wee in TV specials, the children’s show Pee-wee’s Playhouse, and a series of films — passed away on July 30. Glen Wilson/Netflix/Courtesy Everett Collection “Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years,” he wrote in a...

A group of college friends gather at a cabin in the woods, for a weekend reunion of sorts. What could go wrong? Well, we know what could go wrong, but the twist in the comedy-horror film The Blackening is the all-black cast and the comedy-horror film’s determined satiric skewering of that old horror film knack for killing off the Black character first. But like the film’s tagline says, they can’t all die first.
In fact, The Blackening leans much more into satiric comedy than horror, having fun with every little horror trope, not just the racist ones. But it does whittle down the group of friends as it goes and provides some jump scares. On one level, the humor is...

One of the year’s most infectious horror comedies, The Blackening, arrives in theaters this Friday, June 16, 2023.
The Blackening centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf****** game.
Directed by Tim Story (Ride Along, Think Like A Man, Barbershop) and co-written by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip, Harlem) and Dewayne Perkins (“The Amber Ruffin Show,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), The Blackening skewers genre tropes and poses the sarcastic question: if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first?
The Blackening stars Antoinette Robertson, Dewayne Perkins, Sinqua Walls, Grace Byers, X Mayo, Melvin Gregg, Jermaine Fowler, Yvonne Orji, and Jay Pharoah.

Get ready for a great time when the acclaimed horror-comedy The Blackening releases in theaters on June 16, 2023, just in time for Juneteenth.
The Blackening “centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf****** game.”
Directed by Tim Story (Ride Along, Think Like a Man, Barbershop) with screenplay and screen story by producer Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip, Harlem) & Dewayne Perkins (The Amber Ruffin Show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine), the horror-comedy infectiously subverts horror tropes, beginning with the central question, “if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first?”
Joe Lipsett wrote in his 4-star TIFF review, “The humour is successful, the violence is fun and frequently cheeky, and the characters are loveable,” Joe’s review for Bd continues.

Oh no, this is a “biggie”, a true icon, one that still influences all matter of media to this day. And it’s still on the air, either being broadcast or streamed or replayed in all recorded formats, from Beta to Bluray. For what initially looks like a slightly above average tearjerker of a slog through a castoff Lifetime movie of the week, the new dramedy, The High Note, from Focus Features proves to be a surprisingly delightful tale that showcases the talents of its two leads, Dakota Johnson and Tracee Ellis Ross, and makes for a refreshing change of pace from the action and/or adventure films that have traditionally kicked off the summer film season.
The High Note is set amidst the Los Angeles music scene and centers on preparations for the upcoming greatest hits tour of superstar Grace Davis (Tracee Ellis Ross), a singer whose talent, and ego, have climbed to great heights, and Maggie (Dakota Johnson), Davis’ overworked personal assistant. Although she is relegated to running errands for her demanding boss, Maggie aspires to become a record producer, and seems to find the perfect artist to help her...

Breaking into theaters nationwide this summer, watch the brand new trailer for Relativity Studios Masterminds.
In this action comedy inspired by true events, directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite; Nacho Libre), David Ghantt (Zach Galifianakis) discovers the true meaning of adventure far beyond his wildest dreams.
He is an uncomplicated man stuck in a monotonous life. Day in and day out he drives an armored vehicle, transporting millions of other people’s money with no escape in sight. The only glimmer of excitement is his flirtatious work crush Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig) who soon lures him into the scheme of a lifetime.
Along with a group of half-brained criminals led by Steve Chambers (Owen Wilson) and an absurdly faulted heist plan, David manages the impossible and makes off with $17 million in cash…only problem is he foolishly hands the money over to this wild group of double crossers and has...

22 Jump Street is the follow-up to the hugely successful 21 Jump Street (2012) that earned over $200 million at the box office on a budget of only $20 million. Since show business is a business, this sequel was no surprise to anyone.
The film was directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – same as the previous entry. They certainly keep this film moving along at a similar brisk clip here for the most part. The hijinks and hilarity are very similar to the last film – but more on that later. 22 Jump Street was written by Michael Bacall, who wrote the prior film, along with Oren Uziel and Rodney Rothman who both have limited credits until now. Clearly, the goal here was to pretty much keep the same team and playbook in place.
The film opens with partners, Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill), about to make a bust. The bust goes badly and...

After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they don’t have to just crack the case – they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them.
Starring Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Peter Stormare, and Ice Cube, the film is based on the Television Series “21 Jump Street” Created by Patrick Hasburgh & Stephen J. Cannell.
Co-directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, 22 Jump Street opens in theaters nationwide on June 13, 2014

Alex Rodriguez (l) and Alex Pettyfer (r) prepare to give us what we want in Magic Mike.
(photo: WB/Glen Wilson)
Every actor more than likely has a bucket list of roles they’d like to play in their career. For Adam Rodriguez he can cross off music video hottie (Jennifer Lopez’s If You Had My Love video), TV crime scene investigator (CSI: Miami, which just ended it’s ten-year run on CBS), Tyler Perry movie (I Can Do Bad All By Myself) and comedy (Ugly Betty). But did the sexy New York native ever think male stripper would be on that list?
Magic Mike has been on our radar for months now and the June 29th release date is quickly approaching so AfterElton grabbed some time with the gregarious Rodriguez to talk about his experience taking it off in front of the camera with hot actors like Channing Tatum,...

Chicago – There are some major laughs in “The Five-Year Engagement,” good old fashion you-can’t-breathe laughs. But is it also dark and serious at times, and makes some surprising contemporary statements regarding coupling. Jason Segel and Emily Blunt portray the engaged couple.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Although it has some uneven moments, and is apt to go into the Judd Apatow “dirty laugh” mode (he’s the producer), “The Five-Year Engagement” succeeds because it was unafraid to explore what modern couples go through in setting up – and settling – on the monster decision that is called marriage. It’s about dealing with the other person that will be standing next to you at the ceremony, rather than the trappings of preparing the ceremony itself, which was again surprising considering the title. Jason Segal co-wrote the script with director Nicholas Stoller (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”), and they were unafraid to take it into black comedy territory.

To open the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival, presented by American Express®, we've assembled some serious talent: award-winning producer Judd Apatow and dynamo comedy duo Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller reteam for an irreverent comedy that flips the age-old rom-com plot on its head. Universal Pictures' The Five-Year Engagement will premiere at Tribeca on April 18, the opening night of the Festival, in advance of its April 27 theatrical release. Beginning where most romantic comedies end, The Five-Year Engagement shows what happens when an engaged couple just can't make it down the aisle - despite quite a few ...

One might think having to get it on with Mila Kunis or Justin Timberlake for a big-screen comedy would be easy. But the "Friends With Benefits" stars insist that there aren't too many benefits to having to get busy with so many eyes on you — unless you're in on the joke, that is.
"These were, in fact, less awkward, because we were required to make them awkward as the characters," Timberlake told MTV News, with onscreen bestie Kunis by his side. "We were going for laughs, and that breaks the ice a little bit, so you don't feel like you're having to portray something a certain way.

Chicago – Taking a character who was created as an obnoxious supporting one and giving him his own spin-off movie sounds like a recipe for disaster. Despite generally liking its stars and enjoying “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” I was dreading the quasi-sequel “Get Him to the Greek”. There were just too many screenwriting pitfalls in which the film could have and should have fallen in. The fact that writer/director Nicholas Stoller hilariously walks the tightrope and falls into none of them makes “Greek” one of the most surprisingly enjoyable and consistent comedies of the year.
Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) was once the biggest rock and roll star in the world. He sold out shows and kept tabloids in business with his headline-grabbing relationship with pop star girlfriend Jackie Q (Rose Byrne). Aldous and Jackie made the mistake of taking themselves too seriously by making a single called “African Child,” notoriously...

On Zombieland’s opening night last Friday, EW.com accompanied the film’s stars, its director and the two screenwriters to four different movie theaters across Los Angeles to check out how the new horror comedy was playing with fans. The ride-along was also the first time Woody Harrelson checked out his film on opening night and it marked a break-through for Jesse Eisenberg: it's the first movie he could stand to watch himself in. Chicago – The horror/comedy “Zombieland” is one of the few 2009 films to honestly deserve the overused phrase “thrill ride.” From the opening shots to the best post-credits tag in years, “Zombieland” attempts nothing but pure fun and completely delivers.
The most flat-out enjoyable horror/comedy since “Shaun of the Dead,” and a film that deserves to stand just under if not next to that sub-genre masterpiece, “Zombieland” is destined to have a loyal cult following for years to come. But this is not just the product of midnight movie madness planners. “Zombieland” is the kind of film that could easily move beyond its genre fans and become a true crossover hit. You can keep your vampires, “Twilight” fans. At least until “New Moon” comes out, the zombies rule.

Horror comedies have been a mixed bag at the box office. You have the good: Ghostbusters and the Scary Movie franchise. You have the bad: Snakes on a Plane and Eight-Legged Freaks. And then you have the ugly: Jennifer's Body and Club Dread. In the case of this weekend, Zombieland seems destined to join the good. The film -- starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin as the last four humans stuck on a zombie-invested planet -- has been generating incredible buzz and is sure to win the weekend. How high it goes will depend on how...

Rating: 3.0/5.0 Chicago – I’ll be the first critic to tell you that they don’t make adult thrillers often enough. I was very disappointed by the lackluster box office take of Tony Gilroy’s ” Duplicity”. But does that mean that we should give all intellectual mysteries a pass? Of course not. And while I want to love Kevin Macdonald’s “State of Play,” a few poor decisions during production keep it back from being the excellent film it could have been.
It’s even easier to see where “State of Play” went wrong than with most so-so movies because we have the original, amazing BBC mini-series for comparison. Of course, Macdonald couldn’t be expected to duplicate what was accomplished in six hours with only two, but the decisions made in the truncation were not always the smartest ones. And, perhaps, someone should have considered that the lengthy original could...
