Amid the growing call for gender equality in Hollywood, Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon has been quietly leading the charge for women and the work they create – including herself. Toiling under the production banner Pacific Standard Films, Witherspoon and her producing partner, Bruna Papandrea have been the driving force behind films such as Gone Girl and Wild – both of which have arguably played a significant role in challenging the status quo regarding high profile female-led projects. The pair has now added a further title to their vast slate – Cold – which, though written by a man, will star and be produced by Witherspoon. This continues her apparent determination to create her own opportunities both onscreen and off, and to bring strong female-led stories to theatres.

As she continues to produce and develop projects that provide decent starring roles for herself and other women, Reese Witherspoon is picking up scripts of various genres. She’s now attached to supernatural thriller Cold. Bill Marsilii came up with the original concept, which, you will be absolutely flabbergasted (read: not surprised at all) to hear is being kept quiet. All the Hollywood Reporter was able to dig up was that it’s a dark thriller with supernatural elements. Could it have some ghostly themes? Spirits often do seem to be portrayed as lowering the ambient temperature in a room.Witherspoon and Pacific Standard Films partner Bruna Papandrea brought the project to Lionsgate, which, known for its genre movies, jumped at the chance to start developing it. And while not all of Witherspoon’s produced movies have been hits (fugitive comedy Hot Pursuit struggled at the box office), she has...

Breck Eisner’s remake of The Crazies wasn’t half bad, but his latest project, Blood of the Innocent, sounds very, very cool indeed. Imagine a movie featuring both Dracula and Jack the Ripper in a Victorian-set tale of, well, blood and guts.
Variety report the production has received firm financial backing from Inferno Entertainment with Circle of Confusion producing the gig. Eisner is currently attached to The Last Witch Hunter for Summit Entertainment and a remake of Escape From New York, but could still be in line to direct. The script has been provided by Bill Marsilii.

Bill Marsilii ("Deja Vu") penned this $30 million adaptation of Kenneth Grahame's 1908 literary classic and Ray Griggs is directing. Weta will be handling the visual effects with pre-production beginning this year in New Zealand.

British wit Ricky Gervais, who has appeared in such kid-friendly fare as Night at the Museum and Stardust, will voice the mild-mannered Mole in the latest Wind in the Willows adaptation.
An independently produced feature, Wind in the Willows will be helmed by Ray Griggs (I Want Your Money), who spoke to Variety about Gervais’ involvement: “It’s a natural fit to have an iconic British actor star in an iconic British tale…I had Ricky in mind for this role from the inception of the project.”
The script, penned by Déjà vu scribe Bill Marsilii, follows Mole, Rat, Badger and Toad as they “join forces to save their land from a sinister plot that threatens to destroy the uneasy truce between the peaceful animals of the Willows and what remains of Mankind.”
In this live-action adaptation, the animals in question will be animatronics created by Peter Jackson’s heralded visual effects company,...

Ricky Gervais, the marmite comedian, loved and loathed in equal measure. We personally love the guy’s work here at Owf, and my iPod in particular has basically become an exclusive Gervais/Merchant/Pilkie audio player. Anyway, no-one could accuse him of laziness. He’s is always busying himself, whether it be writing new stuff for telly, stand-up, film, podcasts, audiobooks, producing, generally winding up his round-headed, real-life Homer Simpson (Karl) and now he can add woodland creature to his ever increasing list of achievements.
Variety say Gervais will voice the lead character Mole in Rg Entertainment’s live action/animatronic adaptation of the beloved childrens tale The Wind In The Willows written by Kenneth Grahame and adapted countless times across all mediums. The movie was conceived with the hope Gervais would agree to voice Mole, and he has.

After a few years and a couple of viewings, I'm not quite ready to call Tony Scott's Déjà Vu a great thriller or anything so rash, but it does still strike me as probably one of the more inventive and thematically interesting blockbusters of the past decade.
I know, smarts and Scott, whodathunkit? A filmography including Top Gun, True Romance, Days of Thunder and Domino doesn't exactly scream "high-concept time-travel thriller," but it's the very premise presented by credited screenwriters Bill Marsilii and Terry Rossio (the latter of whom would go on to disown the film) that keeps the exceedingly energetic director about as visually grounded as he can be these days.

The last time we checked in on Disney and David Fincher's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" project, Fincher had a lot to say: "We're workin'!" Also: "The idea of doing a gigantic steampunk science fiction movie from 1873 [is] kinda cool."
It definitely is. Even better, I recently caught up with Randall Wallace (director of Disney's upcoming "Secretariat") who spent a week doing rewrites on the Bill Marsilii ("Deja Vu") and Justin Marks ("Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li")-penned script.
"I got to work for one week on that project when I was in the middle of prepping 'Secretariat,'" Wallace said. "They liked the work that I was doing on the screenplay for 'Secretariat' and they asked me to pop over and do a few days on that. I loved that project," he added. "I think they were developing it in a really smart way."

Just a little while ago we had the chance to sit down with director Breck Eisner to discuss next week's DVD and Blu-ray release of The Crazies, and during all our crazy talk we also waxed on about some of his upcoming projects (i.e., The Brood, Blood of the Innocent, and of course his upcoming Escape from New York remake!)
Kicking things off, Breck offered his final word on the proposed remake of David Cronenberg's The Brood and why he's not doing it --
"It was only rumored that I was doing that film. Honestly? I just couldn't," says Eisner. "I was approached to do it, and the studios really wanted me to tackle it, but I just had to pass on it. The reason I passed is that I like that movie far too much. The Brood is just so daring and so risky and so flawed and amazing,...

Since Breck Eisner's The Crazies remake entered theaters, Eisner — whose previous work included the 2005 dud Sahara — has become the go-to genre director, lining up an Escape From New York remake as well as a remake of 1980's Flash Gordon. Eisner isn't done, either.
The busy director is looking to add yet another genre project to his schedule, and this one isn't a remake. Eisner has his eyes on Mark Wheatley's Insight Studios comic book Blood of the Innocent.

Director Breck Eisner hopes to put his own spin on the vampire trend with a planned adaptation of the comic book Blood of the Innocent.
The 1985 title was penned by Mark Wheatley and Rickey Shanklin and sees Dracula battling Jack the Ripper in Victorian London.
Wheatley told Fear.net he believed Eisner would begin work on the project after finishing production on a remake of Escape from New York.
He revealed that Eisner and writer Bill Marsilii have been pitching Blood of the Innocent to Hollywood studios to secure a deal.
Wheatley said: "The thing that makes the story work - and this, by the way is research done by Rickey Shanklin, my writing partner on the book - is that the events that take place in Bram Stoker's Dracula, date by date, mesh perfectly with the Jack the Ripper murders. That was the core of what started us off on doing the story.

Breck Eisner bounced back nicely from Sahara with this year's The Crazies. It didn't make a bunch of money, but it was a pretty good genre movie. And Sahara, of course, is one of the bigger flops of the past decade, a movie that not only didn't start a franchise for Matthew McConaughey, but was also linked to all sorts of improprieties, up to and including lawsuits between the producers and novelist Clive Cussler and bribing local governments where the film was shooting on location.
So, even though The Crazies was only a modest success, Eisner's probably happy not to be subpoenaed. He was linked to two other remakes in the near future, The Creature From the Black Lagoon and Flash Gordon, but now only Flash Gordon remains for him. And honestly, you don't want to be a guy who just directs remakes.
So now it appears he'll do a comic book adaptation,...

So what's next for the director of the successful new version of The Crazies in the field of horror? Why, what's next for everyone nowadays of course -- a comic to film adaptation!
After getting rolling on remakes of Escape from New York and Flash Gordon, according to FEARnet the next time Eisner dips his toe in our bloodied waters will be for an adaptation of Mark Wheatley's Dracula themed comic book, Blood of the Innocent, co-written by writer Rickey Shanklin with art by Marc Hempel and Wheatley.
"He's trying to make 'Blood of the Innocent' the picture he does after Escape [from New York]," Wheatley tells the site. "The writer, Bill Marsilii, has been working on the pitch now for almost a year. But Breck came on board, I think, back in February." The story couldn't be more simple: "It's Dracula versus Jack the Ripper...That's it. That's the whole concept.

Did you see the most recent remake of The Crazies from director Breck Eisner? Because it was actually a pretty freakin' good horror film! Since it's release, Eisner has revealed that he is working on film developments for both Flash Gordon and Escape From New York, which will be his next film.

Breck Eisner looks to be the new Len Wiseman or Stephen Sommers -- he's lining up one high concept tentpole after another in the wake of the reasonable opening of his remake of The Crazies. He's got the Escape From New York remake up next, and is booked for the new Flash Gordon movie and there is still occasional talk about remaking David Cronenberg's The Brood, though (fortunately) that seems unlikely to happen. Now he also apparently has an adaptation of the mid-'80s 'Dracula meets Jack the Ripper' indie comic book series Blood of the Innocent, which could happen after Escape From New York. Fear.net talked to Mark Wheatley of Insight Studios, co-writer of Blood of the Innocent. He said, [Eisner is] trying to make Blood of the Innocent the picture he does after Escape.
