Olivia Thirlby (Juno) has reportedly replaced Lindsay Lohan (Mean Girls, Machete) in the upcoming film The Other Side.
According to TMZ, Lohan lost the role because her name is longer “bankable.”
Along with Juno, Thirlby has appeared in the indie drama The Wackness.
She recently joined the cast of sci-fi thriller The Darkest Hour and is in talks to co-star in an upcoming Ivan Reitman romantic comedy, with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher.
We call bullplop on the rumor. Lohan, though a monster, is still a “bankable” name. We are writing this article because Lohan is still bankable.
Yet…
Lohan landed the role a year ago and producers knew that they may have had a problem on their hands.
From HitFix :
Importantly, producer Kent Harper told the trade Lohan will be insured before production starts and Michaels insists the tabloid queen knows Hollywood has a perception of her as being unprofessional.

A pretty good year.
George Clooney in .Up in the Air.
Photo: Dale Robinette/ Paramount
It seems to be a critical tradition to bewail the awfulness of each year's movies. But how often is this really true? With the annual caveat that it's impossible (and meaningless) to designate one movie or filmmaker as the "best," here are a number of 2009 pictures I liked a lot in various aspects, with one entrant in each category selected, fairly arbitrarily, as the "best," and equally worthy contenders noted below them.
Best Picture:
"Up in the Air" A mainstream film with a complex heart and a brain, too. Not exactly a comedy, not precisely a drama, but as close to a perfect movie as any other this year.
Also really good: "The Hurt Locker": Can it actually have been seven years since Kathryn Bigelow's last picture? This scrappy low-budget film, with a breakthrough performance by Jeremy Renner,...

Jennifer Lynch is, like her famouser filmmaker dad David, totally demented. In a good way. Her second feature -- a long time coming after 1993’s twisted Boxing Helena -- is slow-boil sinister, delivering the kind of simmering menace that few films can bother to take the time for these days, it seems. FBI agents Bill Pullman (Bottle Shock) and Julia Ormond (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) arrive in middle-of-nowhere Middle America to investigate a serial-killing spree, with three groups of witnesses to question: a couple of sociopathic cops (a terrifying and unrecognizable French Stewart, and Kent Harper, who cowrote the script with Lynch); a family on vacation, including a little girl (Ryan Simpkins) with a keenly observant eye; and a pair of romantic junkies (Pell James [Zodiac] and Mac Miller). Edging right up to a place where discomfort becomes denial -- as in, “I don’t want to be watching...

Jennifer Lynch Turns Her Eye On Surveillance
By
Alex Simon
Few filmmakers have survived the professional excoriation that writer/director Jennifer Lynch had to face with her film debut Boxing Helena, in 1993. In spite of being nominated for a Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, the film was universally massacred by critics and tanked at the box office (it has since garnered an impressive cult following, with more than a few of its naysayers penning re-evaluations of the film and its merits). Having penned the script of Boxing Helena at the age of 19, and seeming to be washed up in show business by 25, Lynch spent the next decade and a half surviving a near-fatal car accident which left her with severe spinal damage, adjusting to life as a single parent with a young daughter, and getting sober after years of alcohol and drug abuse. Even though director Jennifer Lynch has been out of the game for a while now, putting her family and her health first, that doesn’t mean that the director has lost any of her focus. That’s why 2009 is shaping up to be such an important year for Lynch as she has two films ready to herald her return behind the camera — Surveillance and Hisss.
Surveillance, which opens in theaters on June 26th, centers around Federal Officers Elizabeth Anderson (Julia Ormond) and Sam Hallaway (Bill Pullman) who have three sets of stories to figure out so they can solve a string of vicious murders. The stories come from a zealot cop, a strung-out junkie, and an eight-year-old girl; but as the Feds begin to expose the fragile little details each witness conceals so carefully with a well practiced lie, they soon discover that uncovering ‘the truth’ can come at a very big cost…...

Bill Pullman and Julia Ormond in a wild murder derby.
Bill Pullman and Julia Ormond in "Surveillance"
Photo: Magnolia Pictures
"Surveillance" started out as a script about witches. Director Jennifer Lynch took a whack at it and made a movie about devils — the human kind. The picture is twisted and disturbing and funny, too. Lynch has pushed the material to the wall — she has a gift for violence and perversity, and she never pulls back.
A trail of brutal serial murders has wound its way across the country and now arrived in a remote, unnamed desert community. The movie begins with a recent atrocity, a man and woman slaughtered at their home. Then there's another bloodbath, out on a lonely highway, which leaves several people dead. We don't see this massacre — yet. The story really gets underway in its aftermath.
Three survivors have been brought to the local police headquarters:...

Release Date: June 26 (limited)
Director: Jennifer Chambers Lynch
Writers: Kent Harper and Jennifer Chambers Lynch
Cinematographer: Peter Wunstorf
Starring: Julia Ormond, Bill Pullman, Pell James
Studio/Run Time: Magnolia, 97 mins.
A pulpy, conventional thriller
By the time Surveillance comes to its unhinged, ludicrous finale, it’s hard to tell exactly what’s just happened. Directed by Jennifer Chambers Lynch (who, it’s obligatory to note, is the daughter of David), the film’s setup is pure whodunit convention: Witnesses to several nasty murders recount what happened through flashbacks at a police station. More difficult to pin down are Lynch’s curious instincts as a filmmaker. Her first feature, Boxing Helena (1993), was so disastrous she hasn’t made another movie until now, but she returns with a new off-kilter playfulness. Comfortable behind the camera, Lynch riffs on noir influences with an inquisitive visual style that often drifts from the plot at hand.

Calling up comparisons with her celebrated father David may be too easy a jumping-off point in addressing Jennifer Lynch’s new film Surveillance, but it’s an unavoidable one—especially given that David is credited as an executive producer. But the younger Lynch comes into her own as a filmmaker with this movie (currently available via video-on-demand and beginning limited theatrical play from Magnolia Pictures this week), which should also dispel any lingering memories of the hostile reception that greeted her debut feature Boxing Helena over 15 years ago.
Superficially, Surveillance’s setup resembles that of Twin Peaks, with the beginning of an FBI murder investigation in a rural area teeming with odd folks. But as opposed to that eponymous lush Pacific Northwest town, the movie is set in a barren part of the Midwest (actually lensed in Saskatchewan, Canada), and whereas most of the eccentrics in David’s seminal series were viewed sympathetically,...

Surveillance may involve three separate interviews about the same event, but Rashomon it most certainly is not. Ascertaining the truth through multiple narratives is certainly central to Jennifer Lynch's long-delayed follow-up to 1993's polarizing Boxing Helena. The three accounts provided, however, aren't juxtaposed or in real conflict; rather, they coalesce to form a tale about the fateful affairs that led FBI agents Anderson (Julia Ormond) and Hallaway (Bill Pullman) to a middle-of-nowhere New Mexico police station to investigate a horrific crime. That offense is initially shrouded in mystery, with details elucidated slowly through the agents' briefing and subsequent interviews - conducted simultaneously by Anderson and local cops, and monitored via closed-circuit video feeds by Hallaway - of the surviving eyewitnesses: traumatized 12-year-old Stephanie (Ryan Simpkins), defiant junkie Bobbie (Pell James) and combative officer Bennet (Kent Harper). It's the set-up for a rather routine procedural. Yet in a development that...

4/5 by Peter Dimako, Editor. Effective thriller delivers a shocker ending. Jennifer Chambers Lynch has a way of delivering shock to viewers in a uniquely effective way. Such was evident in her 1993 film “Boxing Helena;” a release 16 years ago which was Lynch’s last effort at the helm. Now, in “Surveillance” the filmmaker delivers a brutal offering and confirms her capability as a tension-weaving director. The Pennsylvanian-born Lynch is in post-production phase for “Hisss,” a fantasy horror/thriller which she helms and writes; we’ll visit that one too after seeing this memorable film. A gory murder opens up the film with a facially deformed figure decimating victims with the last running down the road before she’s plowed down. Bill Pullman and Julia Ormond enter the picture as Sam Hallaway and Elizabeth Anderson, two feds brought in after another gruesome murder takes place in involving two police officers, a traveling...

2009
Surveillance, out in theaters on Jun 26th, 2009, is Jennifer Lynch’s first film since 1993’s strange twisted thriller Boxing Helena, which she made with Twin Peaks star Sherilynn Fenn. Boxing Helena is considered a very bad film by most people who watch films, so it caused some panic when, in 2005, Surveillance reared its head as Jennifer’s latest project. She’s also got another horror film coming out this year – Hisss, about an Indian myth of snake shape shifters. Surveillance has a touch of the comically macabre, something she may have inherited from her filmmaker father David Lynch, embedded in its small town murder spree plotline. It also has some very forced erotica and is gaudiness personified in the last 20 minutes.
