A classic film that not only endures but continues to inspire half a century later is a true marvel. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, The Wicker Man helped popularize the folk horror genre that continues to flourish with the likes of Midsommar, The Witch, and The Ritual. Its impact extends beyond cinema, from inspiring Radiohead (“Burn the Witch”) and Iron Maiden (“The Wicker Man”) songs to being included in the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony.
In the film, Sergeant Neil Howie travels from the mainland to the Scottish island of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. The devout Christian is appalled to learn that the islanders practice a form of paganism characterized by blasphemous beliefs, degeneracy, doublespeak, and peculiar customs. Like The Bride of Frankenstein, the namesake doesn’t show up until the final moments of the film, but it leaves an indelible impression long after the credits roll.

Robin Hardy’s folk horror classic The Wicker Man introduces its protagonist, Sergeant Neil Howie (Edward Woodward), in only a few short scenes that sketch him as a devout Christian and religious conservative. As he takes the sacrament and sings hymns in a small Scottish church, he appears to be in his element but nonetheless uncomfortable. He’s a man who looks petrified to touch any surface of the material world lest it corrupt his being.
One quickly knows everything about how Howie regards the world. This allows The Wicker Man, as written by Anthony Shaffer, to swiftly upend the man’s sense of reality when the police officer flies out to the remote Hebridean town of Summerisle to investigate a missing persons case and discovers that all of the hamlet’s residents practice a pre-Christian form of paganism.

If there's one thing that the ongoing pandemic has reinforced for many people, it's the importance of human connection - and, beyond that, as we Zoom with our friends and relatives, the importance of physical touch. All of which makes Marteinn Thorsson's warm-spirited and humanistic drama - which includes its own hat-tip to Covid - a timely watch.

Since the publication of their bestselling memoir, Bob the ginger street cat and his musician friend James have really gone up in the world. Literary London, with its swanky parties and generous purse, has welcomed the pair with open arms. But for James (Luke Treadaway), the ghosts of his past are never too far from his mind and this Christmas season he is reliving a painful chapter which nearly divided him from his feline sidekick forever.
His flashback is prompted by a (slightly contrived) encounter with a young busker and an unwelcome face from James’ own days of singing for his supper. James persuades the initially mistrustful boy to listen to his story in the hope that it might help him to change his life too. The tale he tells is of his last challenging Christmas as a busker. A time when money was incredibly tight and his ability to...

Lionsgate UK has released an official trailer for a charming sequel titled A Christmas Gift From Bob, also known as A Gift from Bob for release outside of the UK (though no US date is set yet). This talkative documentary retraces the steps of pioneering musicologists Alan Lomax and Shirley Collins 60 years on
‘Relevant today more than ever,” says one interviewee in Southern Journey (Revisited), pointing out his Easy Rider pin badge. “Man went looking for America and couldn’t find it nowhere.” But this roving, loquacious documentary does its damn best to pin down the American soul, going on a road trip through Virginia, Kentucky and Mississippi in the tracks of ethnomusicologists Alan Lomax and Shirley Collins on their 1959 “Southern Journey” in search of the south’s musical traditions.
Directors Rob Curry and Tim Plester are ostensibly about the music. Their first porch stop is with a Salem, Virginia woman whose dark, purposeful eyes are a spitter for her grandmother: Appalachian balladeer Texas Gladden, who was doorstepped by Lomax 60 years ago. Ricky Gervais’ dark comedy After Life is coming back to Netflix for a second season.
The Svod platform has ordered another six-part run of the show, which was created, written and directed by The Office creator, who also starred in the lead role.
This comes after the British comedy, which is produced by Gervais’ Derek Productions, launched on Netflix in March. Last month, the Derek star revealed that he’d never had a reaction to a show that he created before and said that he had a “spring in his step as he skips towards writing season two”.
The show follows Gervais’ Tony who had a perfect lies. But after his wife Lisa dies, Tony changes. After contemplating taking his own life, he decides instead to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes from now on. He thinks it’s like a Super...

Ricky Gervais’ new Netflix series After Life is a darker and more solemn affair than we’ve come to expect from the creator of The Office, Extras and Derek. Written, directed by and starring Gervais himself, After Life tackles grief, addiction and depression with mixed results in this hugely funny, if tonally flawed 6 part series.
Months after losing his wife and soul mate of twenty-five years Lisa (Kerry Godliman) to cancer, Tony (Gervais) just can’t seem to get over her and refuses to envisage a world without her in it. In fact the only thing keeping him from taking his own life, is the thought of leaving his beloved German shepherd behind, a dog he promised Lisa he would take care of no matter what.
To help him come to terms with life without her, Lisa has left Tony a series of instructions in form of a video imploring...

The Ballad of Shirley Collins is a new documentary from co-directors Rob Curry and Tim Plester, which was selected to play at the Southend Film Festival on Sunday 27th May. I got a chance to talk with Rob Curry and a few questions about how the idea for the documentary come about, working with Shirley Collins and the process for co-directing the film with Tim Plester.
What can we expect from your new documentary The Ballad of Shirley Collins?
It is a film about an English folk singer called Shirley Collins, who was famous in the 1960s-1970s. She lost her voice in 1980 through a series of incidents which we explore in the film and without giving too much away because it’s quite widely know now, the film then explores her trying to sing again. It explores that alongside a story from the beginning of her life, when she...

In his latest podcase/interview, host Stuart Wright talks with Tim Plester, the co-director of The Ballad of Shirley Collins – which is out now. The DVD with CD of the soundtrack is available from earthrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/the-…ey-collins
Widely regarded as the 20th century’s most important singer of English traditional song, Shirley Collins is someone who was born to invoke the old songs. Alongside her sister Dolly, Shirley stood at the epicentre of the folkmusic revival during the 1960s and 1970s. But in 1980 she developed a disorder of the vocal chords known as dysphonia, which robbed her of her unique singing voice and forced her into early retirement.
Deliberately eschewing a straightforward biopic approach, Rob Curry and Tim Plester ‘Way of the Morris’, is a lyrical response to the life-and-times of a totemic musical figure. Granted intimate access to recording sessions for Shirley’s first album (Lodestar...

Summer blockbuster season is just around the corner, but there's no need to wait until then to see a great movie. April brings us a wide variety of women-centric projects, as well as quite a few films helmed and/or written by women.
The month starts off with "Woman in Gold," starring Helen Mirren as a Jewish woman on a journey to recover her family's heirlooms, which was stolen by the Nazis. It's based on a true story, and Mirren roots the film with her powerful presence. "Closer to the Moon" is another WWII-era drama set for an April release, this one based on the crime capers of a group of Jewish resistance fighters a few years after the end of the war. "Marie's Story" is another period piece, centering around the efforts of a 19th-century nun to help a girl born blind and deaf.
There are a few more women-focused dramas being released in April, including the much-buzzed "Clouds of Sils Maria," which garnered Kristen Stewart the prestigious Cesar Award for supporting actress. Stewart has made waves for being the first American actress to win the French award, and the film looks to capitalize on that with its American release. “Félix & Meira" is another award-winner coming out this month. The Best Canadian Feature from the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival aims to make its mark with the story of an unconventional and radical love affair, one that reaches across racial and religious lines. "About Elly" also confronts cultural biases with its depiction of Iran's upper middle class.
"Effie Gray" tackles the sexual politics of the Victorian era, and with a screenplay from Emma Thompson, it's sure to be intriguing as well as quick-witted. Speaking of intriguing, "The Age of Adaline" follows a woman who mysteriously stopped aging eight decades ago. Blake Lively centers the film as Adaline, struggling with love and trust and all the other things that might follow when one lives seemingly forever.
Courteney Cox makes her big-screen directorial debut (the actress has previously directed episodes of "Cougar Town," which she stars in) with "Just Before I Go," and screenwiter Gren Wells makes hers as well with "The Road Within." Director Mia Hansen-løve ("Goodbye First Love") directs Greta Gerwig in "Eden," a look at the rise of French electronic music in the 90s.
The month will also see the release of a few very different documentaries. "The Hand That Feeds" focuses on undocumented immigrants struggling to form an independent union, while "Iris" follows 93-year-old Iris Apfel, a flamboyant New York City fashion icon. "Antarctic Edge: 70° South" is focused on the changing climate of the Antarctic's Peninsula and was made with the collaboration of Rutgers University students and scientists.
We'll also see comedic projects featuring Mary Elizabeth Winstead ("Alex of Venice") and Rose Byrne ("Adult Beginners"). Nia Vardalos returns to the screen with a role in "Helicopter Mom," which promises an outrageous performance from the "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" star. "Sweet Lorraine" and "Farah Goes Bang" round out the women-centric comedy offerings of the month.
Here are all the women-centric films opening in the month of April. All descriptions are from press materials unless otherwise noted.
April 1
Woman in Gold
"Woman in Gold" is the remarkable true story of one woman’s journey to reclaim her heritage and seek justice for what happened to her family. Sixty years after she fled Vienna during World War II, an elderly Jewish woman, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), starts her journey to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazis, among them Klimt’s famous painting "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I." Together with her inexperienced but plucky young lawyer Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), she embarks upon a major battle, which takes them all the way to the heart of the Austrian establishment and the U.S. Supreme Court, and forces her to confront difficult truths about the past along the way.
April 3
The Hand That Feeds (doc) - Co-Written and Co-Directed by Rachel Lears
At a popular bakery café, residents of New York’s Upper East Side get bagels and coffee served with a smile 24 hours a day. But behind the scenes, undocumented immigrant workers face sub-legal wages, dangerous machinery, and abusive managers who will fire them for calling in sick. Mild-mannered sandwich maker Mahoma López has never been interested in politics, but in January 2012 he convinces a small group of his co-workers to fight back.
Risking deportation and the loss of their livelihood, the workers team up with a diverse crew of innovative young organizers and take the unusual step of forming their own independent union, launching themselves on a journey that will test the limits of their resolve. In one roller-coaster year, they must overcome a shocking betrayal and a two-month lockout. Lawyers will battle in back rooms, Occupy Wall Street protesters will take over the restaurant, and a picket line will divide the neighborhood. If they can win a contract, it will set a historic precedent for low-wage workers across the country. But whatever happens, Mahoma and his coworkers will never be exploited again.
Effie Gray - Written by Emma Thompson
In her original screenplay “Effie Gray,” Emma Thompson takes a bold look at the real-life story of the Effie Gray-John Ruskin marriage, while courageously exposing what was truly hiding behind the veil of their public life. Set in a time when neither divorce nor gay marriage were an option, “Effie Gray” is the story of a young woman (Dakota Fanning) coming of age and finding her own voice in a world where women were expected to be seen but not heard. “Effie Gray” explores the roots of sexual intolerance, which continue to have a stronghold today, while shedding light on the marital politics of the Victorian era.
April 8
About Elly
As with director Asghar Farhadi's better-known films, “About Elly” concerns the affluent, well-educated, cultured, and only marginally religious members of Iran's upper-middle class. Elly (Taraneh Alidoosti), a pretty young woman invited as a possible romantic interest for one of the newly single men among this group, disappears suddenly without a trace. The festive atmosphere quickly turns frantic as friends accuse one another of responsibility. Plot-wise, Farhadi's drama has been compared to “L’Avventura”; but the film is less concerned with Elly's disappearance per se than with exploring the intricate mechanisms of deceit, brutality, and betrayal which come into play when ordinary circumstances take a tragic turn.
April 10
Clouds of Sils Maria
At the peak of her international career, Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche) is asked to perform in a revival of the play that made her famous twenty years ago. But back then, she played the role of Sigrid, an alluring young girl who disarms and eventually drives her boss Helena to suicide. Now she is being asked to step into the other role, that of the older Helena. She departs with her assistant (Kristen Stewart) to rehearse in Sils Maria; a remote region of the Alps. A young Hollywood starlet with a penchant for scandal (Chloë Grace Moretz) is to take on the role of Sigrid, and Maria finds herself on the other side of the mirror, face to face with an ambiguously charming woman who is, in essence, an unsettling reflection of herself.
The Sisterhood of Night - Directed by Caryn Waechter and Written by Marilyn Fu
Based on the short story by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Steven Millhauser, "The Sisterhood of Night" is a story of friendship and loyalty set against the backdrop of a modern-day Salem witch trial. Shot on location in Kingston, NY, the film chronicles a group of girls who have slipped out of the world of social media into a mysterious world deep in the woods. The tale begins when Emily Parris (Kara Hayward) exposes a secret society of teenage girls. Accusing them of committing sexually deviant acts, Emily’s allegations throw their small American town into the national media spotlight. The mystery deepens when each of the accused takes a vow of silence. What follows is a chronicle of three girls’ unique and provocative alternative to the loneliness of adolescence, revealing the tragedy and humor of teenage years changed forever by the Internet age.
Farah Goes Bang - Directed by Meera Menon, Written by Laura Goode and Meera Menon
A road-trip comedy that centers on Farah (Nikohl Boosheri), a twenty-something woman who tries to lose her virginity while campaigning for John Kerry in 2004. Farah and her friends K.J. and Roopa follow the campaign trail to Ohio, seizing this charged moment in their lives and the life of their country.
April 17
Closer to the Moon
Set in 1959 Bucharest, “Closer to the Moon” opens as the crime is hatched and executed by old friends from the WWII Jewish Resistance, who seek to recapture the excitement of their glory days. Led by a chief police inspector (Mark Strong) and a political academic (Vera Farmiga), the quintet also includes a respected history professor (Christian McKay), a hotshot reporter (Joe Armstrong), and a space scientist (Tim Plester). Their postwar influence fading amid an ongoing Stalinist purge of Jews and intellectuals, the disillusioned gang retaliates by hijacking a van delivering cash to the Romanian National Bank, staging the robbery to make it look like a movie shoot. Caught and convicted in a kangaroo court, the culprits, with help from an eyewitness (Harry Lloyd) to the robbery, are forced to reenact their crime in a devious anti-Semitic propaganda film.
Felix & Meira
Winner of Best Canadian Feature at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, “Félix & Meira” is the story of an unconventional romance between two people living vastly different realities mere blocks away from one another. Each lost in their everyday lives, Meira (Hadas Yaron), a Hasidic Jewish wife and mother, and Félix (Martin Dubreuil), a Secular loner mourning the recent death of his estranged father, unexpectedly meet in a local bakery in Montreal's Mile End district. What starts as an innocent friendship becomes more serious as the two wayward strangers find comfort in one another. As Felix opens Meira's eyes to the world outside of her tight-knit Orthodox community, her desire for change becomes harder for her to ignore, ultimately forcing her to choose: remain in the life that she knows or give it all up to be with Félix.
Alex of Venice - Co-Written by Jessica Goldberg and Katie Nehra
In “Alex of Venice,” workaholic environmental attorney Alex Vedder (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is forced to reinvent herself after her husband (Chris Messina) suddenly leaves the family. Dealing with an aging father (Don Johnson) who still aspires to succeed as an actor, an eccentric sister (Katie Nehra), and an extremely shy son (Skylar Gaertner), Alex is bombarded with everything from the mundane to hilariously catastrophic events without a shoulder to lean on. Cas & Dylan - Written by Jessie Gabe
When 61-year-old self-proclaimed loner and terminally ill Dr. Cas Pepper (Richard Dreyfuss) reluctantly agrees to give 22-year-old social misfit Dyland Morgan (Tatiana Maslany) a very short lift home, the last thing he anticipates is that he will strike her angry boyfriend with his car, find himself on the lam, and ultimately drive across the country with an aspiring young writer determined to help him overcome his own bizarre case of suicide-note writer's block. But as fate would have it, that is exactly what happens. Suddenly Cas's solo one-way trip out West isn't so solo. With Dylan at his side, the two take off on an adventure that will open their eyes to some of life's lessons -- both big and small.
Antarctic Edge: 70° South (doc) - Directed by Dena Seidel
Dena Seidel’s documentary not only offers rare, beautifully shot footage of West Antarctic Pennisula's rapidly changing environment, studying the connections that reveal the concrete impact of climate change; it is also a one-of-a-kind collaboration between the Rutgers University Film Bureau and the Rutgers Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences and contains interviews and insights from some of the world’s leading ocean researchers. It is a fascinating look at their life’s work trying to understand how to maintain our planet.

Iris (doc) (Opening in New York City)
"Iris" pairs legendary 87-year-old documentarian Albert Maysles with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how, even in Iris' dotage, a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. "Iris" portrays a singular woman whose enthusiasm for fashion, art, and people are life's sustenance and reminds us that dressing, and indeed life, is nothing but an experiment. Despite the abundance of glamour in her current life, she continues to embrace the values and work ethic established during a middle-class Queens upbringing during the Great Depression.

Marie’s Story
At the turn of the 19th century, a humble artisan and his wife have a daughter, Marie (Ariana Rivoire), who is born deaf and blind and unable to communicate with the world around her. Desperate to find a connection to their daughter and avoid sending her to an asylum, the Heurtins send fourteen-year-old Marie to the Larnay Institute in central France, where an order of Catholic nuns manage a school for deaf girls. There, the idealistic Sister Marguerite (Isabelle Carré) sees in Marie a unique potential, and despite her Mother Superior's (Brigitte Catillon) skepticism, vows to bring the wild young thing out of the darkness into which she was born. Based on true events, “Marie's Story” recounts the courageous journey of a young nun and the lives she would change forever, confronting failures and discouragement with joyous faith and love. (Film Movement)...

Realizing she will thrive with or without her husband, Alex discovers her hidden vulnerability as well as her inner strength as she fights to keep her family intact in the midst of the most demanding and important case of her career.

After premiering at last year’s London Film Festival, Love me till Monday finally makes its way to UK cinemas this week. Directed by TV veteran Justin Hardy, this likeable rom-com owes much to a compelling central performance by Georgia Maguire, in her feature film debut.
The film follows Maguire’s Becky, a gauche graduate looking after her younger brother whilst searching for love in a dead-end office job. Initially she is pining for hunky colleague Him (Royce Pierreson) but when that doesn’t work out she ends up in a relationship with her boss Steve (Tim Plester), who will only date her on weekends.
Though there are some plot elements here that feel generic, Love me till Monday does an excellent job of capturing the reality of post-Uni life, from Becky having moved back in with her mother to the banality of office work. The repeating of certain plot...

Love "Game of Thrones"? Love "Doctor Who"? Then you've probably noticed that more than a few actors have appeared in both shows over the years.
Well, savvy Facebook user Bea from the Facebook fansite "Doctor Who?" has organized all the actors together into one easy-to-geek-out-over photo guide showing how the various "Game of Thrones" characters have appeared in "Doctor Who" over the years, and vice versa. Joe Desmpie, who plays Gendry in "Game of Thrones," appeared in the 2008 "Doctor Who" episode "The Doctor's Daughter" as Cline. Harry Lloyd, who played Viserys Targaryen, also played Baines in the two-part 2007 "Doctor Who" episodes "Human Nature" and "The Family of Blood."
Actors including Diana Rigg, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Lucian Msamati, David Bradley, Tim Plester, Finn Jones and Iain Glen have all appeared in both beloved fantasy programs. How many of them have you noticed in your viewings?...

Boom! March 2013 is a little over four months away, but you don’t have to wait for today’s teaser poster reveal for the next addictive season of Game of Thrones on HBO. You can see it now. The art work is cold, dark and made of stone, but it gets its point across. Dragons, kings and wildlings return on 03.31.13. The repetition of the number three is also very fitting. It is, after all, season three that we’re waiting on pins and needles for. I like the swords worked into the image. If it revealed more than just a release date, the image wouldn’t look bad on a Game of Thrones sweatshirt.
The new season promises to delve into the same goings on from the first half of the novel, “A Storm of Swords”. That was the third book in George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series.

"Game of Thrones" has reportedly cast a small but pivotal Season 3 role -- Roslin Frey -- according to fansite Winter Is Coming. British actress Alexandra Dowling is rumored to have scored the role, after Wic discovered the credit on Dowling's resume. A request for confirmation from HBO was not immediately returned.
While fans of the books already know why Roslin's casting is so important to the story, we'll try to keep it spoiler-free for those who haven't read the novels. Suffice it to say, Robb Stark (Richard Madden) was betrothed to an unspecified daughter of House Frey in Season 2 of the HBO drama, but broke that agreement to wed the healer Talisa (Oona Chaplin) at the end of last year, much to his mother's chagrin. The sprawling Frey family, headed by Lord Walder Frey (David Bradley) should play an integral role in Season 3, if the series adheres to the storyline of George R.

In another comic video blog, we get to see Nick Frost play golf along with his on-screen (and probably real life) buddies played by Rory Kinnear (Gary) and Tim Plester (Mickey) for another scene in the movie Cuban Fury. We’ve had some pretty terrible weather over the last few weeks here in the UK but on the day this was shot, it was a glorious sunny day which according to Nick is perfect for the scene. My favourite part is the new game that they’ve invented known as ‘Golf Catch’ where you have to hit the ball to someone who has to catch it before breaking their fingers!
Looks like they’re having a lot of fun making this movie and I’m looking to see it when it hits the cinemas next year. Cuban Fury also stars Rashida Jones, Chris O’Dowd, Olivia Colman, Ian McShane and is directed by James Griffiths.

Another staggering event this year is a very special live presentation of Crispin Hellion Glover‘s notorious underground films What Is It? and It Is Fine! Everything Is Fine. (Click film titles for Bad Lit reviews!) These very...

Lockout hits UK cinemas today and stars Guy Pearce as Snow, a former government agent agent who is framed for a crime that he didn’t commit. When convicted, he’s sent to Ms-1, a maximum security prison which is in orbit between Earth and the moon. While doing his best to avoid capture and then ultimately to prove his innocence, a riot ensures on Ms-1 during an inspection by the president’s daughter (Maggie Grace) and there’s only one man who can save the day! You guess it, Guy Pearce to the rescue!

New 'Lockout' movie delivered great action, thrills, suspense & more. FilmDistrict released their new,wild,action/thriller flick "Lockout" into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out,and thought it was totally action-packed,thrilling,and fun to watch as it even served up a touch of humor in the process. It stars: Guy Pearce, Maggie Grace, Peter Stormare, Lennie James, Vincent Regan, Tim Plester, Anne-Solenne Hatte, Yan Dron, Patrick Cauderlier, Milorad Kapor, Bojan Peric, and Mark Tankersley. In the new flick, the current date was 2079,and an ex-cia agent named Snow (Guy Pearce) is held in United States government custody, and interrogated about the events that happened before his capture by Scott Langral, who is the Chief of the United States Secret Service. Snow's retelling of the events, shows he was forced to kill assailants and flee with a very valuable briefcase after a secret intelligence exchange meeting goes wrong.

Chicago – The annoying and boring “Lockout” is a pile of aggressive junk masquerading as a good time. Some critics and viewers will pretend that this is a “fun B-movie” just because it has a few over-the-top sequences (that look completely cartoonish), an absolutely ridiculous premise, and a scenery-chewing performance from the great Guy Pearce. Don’t believe them. They’re making excuses for a movie that’s totally bereft of creative storytelling and has a screenplay that most straight-to-video directors would say needs a rewrite.
Rating: 1.0/5.0
“Lockout” starts promisingly in concept and the casting of its leading man. Lest you think I’m some pretentious film critic who can’t get into a well-made B-movie, the idea of an “Escape From New York” in space with the underrated Guy Pearce in the Snake Plissken role seemed like a slam dunk. How do you screw that up? Watch “Lockout” and find out.

It’s not fun being Maggie Grace in the new space actioner “Lockout”. For one, people keep hitting her and trying to killer her. Thankfully Guy Pearce is there to save the day. Oh, poor Maggie Grace. She’s stuck in a space prison with a bunch of denigrate prisoners, then Guy Pearce shows up to rescue her, but he pretty much abuses her almost as much as the bad guys. But hey, at least he’s doing it to save her life. So, you know, that’s gotta count for something, right? Possibly. Check out two more clips from the French-produced “Lockout”. I am getting more and more excited to see this movie. I am getting a strong vibe for this being just like Escape from New York, but in space. Pearce's character Snow has so many cheesy yet fun one-liners that are perfect for a action movies like this.
