What does it take for the Emmy-nominated crew behind “Saturday Night Live” to build sets from start to finish? Thirty-six hours, plus “dedication and expertise,” according to production designer Andrea Purcigliotti.
By the time Purcigliotti and fellow production designers Leo Yoshimura and Keith Raywood receive their script, it’s often late on a Wednesday night after the cast has gone through a table read. Then it’s off to the races. The sets need to be ready for shooting by 8 a.m. on Friday.
For a spoof on the famous levitation scene in “The Exorcist,” the team had to figure out how to get Jenna Ortega to rise from a bed without special effects. The solution was hydraulics, but they had little time to properly outfit the bed.
“We built the lift with hydraulic motors that went under the bed and lifted up a small portion,” says Yoshimura. “So, it...

Leo Akira Yoshimura and Keith Ian Raywood have each won six Emmy Awards for their production design work on NBC’s late night sketch comedy series “Saturday Night Live” (and Raywood has a seventh trophy for the MTV Video Music Awards). They’re Emmy-nominated again this year for the episodes hosted by Steve Martin/Martin Short and Jenna Ortega. “It always feels really special and it’s nice to be a part of it,” Raywood declares about the awards love, to which Yoshimura jokes, “We deserve it!” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Every year the team has “a discussion” about which “SNL” episodes to submit to the Emmy judges. “Some shows just clearly seem more like the one to put up,” Raywood divulges. “It might have had some of the more interesting sets, some more challenging ones. There’s always one that has to be [picked] first — that wound up...

“Saturday Night Live” production designers Leo Akira Yoshimura and Keith Raywood work at breakneck speed under extraordinarily tight schedules to ensure sets for the timely satire are camera-ready each week — with changes being added right up to the very last minute.
Raywood, who began as a production designer on the show in 1985, will often start crafting sets late on Wednesday nights. “This show is writer-driven. It all starts with the script,” he says. “One show can have
less complexity to it and fewer special effects are involved, but we never know until it’s handed to us on Wednesday night.”
Other sets will be used for two to three scenes. When Yoshimura introduces people to the show, whether it’s cast or friends visiting, they always comment on the stage size — Studio 8H is just over 6,000 square feet, including space for audience seating — or remark on how swiftly the crew shifts scenery.

NBC’s Emmy juggernaut Saturday Night Live entered a pair of episodes for the production design award this season, one hosted by Only Murders in the Building‘s Steve Martin and Martin Short and one hosted by Wednesday star Jenna Ortega.
A nomination, or nominations, would extend the remarkable track record of Eugene Lee, who died in February at age 83 after serving as a production designer on SNL since its 1975 pilot. He has been nominated 17 times for the show, and a posthumous award would give him a seventh Emmy win for the sketch series.
“I was very honored to work with Eugene Lee for 47 years,” says fellow production designer Leo Yoshimura. “Eugene hired me to be his art director on Saturday Night Live in August 1975. I overstayed. I will miss his consummate passion for design. But it is comforting to know that I will still be able to work in Eugene Lee’s television studio.

Aubrey Plaza is definitely one of the “it-girls” of the moment. Many of Plaza’s fans fell in love with her during her time on Parks and Recreation, but the star has done a lot since her days playing April Ludgate.
From her 2020 performance in Black Bear to Plaza’s recent stint hosting Saturday Night Live, the actor and her career have come a long way. As Plaza reflected on her path to fame and stardom, she recalled one particular “pill-popping” character from her SNL audition.

“The Queen’s Gambit,” “The Mandalorian,” “Saturday Night Live,” “The Crown” and “Pose” were among the top winners on Saturday as the first wave of this year’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards were handed out in downtown Los Angeles.
Netflix prevailed among networks and platforms with 12 wins, paced by seven trophies collected by limited series “The Queen’s Gambit.”
The ceremony was held outdoors in a tent in the L.A. Live complex because of pandemic conditions. Attendance was much smaller than in previous years because of the need for social distancing to protect against Covid-19 outbreaks. Those who did attend the show in person went through a gauntlet of paperwork and screenings on site to prove that they were vaccinated and had tested negative for the virus within the past 48 hours.
“The Queen’s Gambit’s” haul included wins for period costumes, period makeup, production design and cinematography for a limited series.

“Saturday Night Live” won Best Variety Sketch Series at Monday’s Primetime Emmy Awards, marking the first time the long-running show has defended a series award and extending its record haul to 72, the most of any program.
Though “SNL” has been on the air for 43 years, it has only won three series awards. It took home Best Variety Series in 1976 for its first season and again in 1993 for its 18th season. After the category was split into Best Variety Sketch Series and Best Variety Talk Series in 2015, “SNL” won the former last year for its buzzy, politically charged 42nd installment. It had leading 2/13 odds to repeat this year.

After the category was split into Best Variety Sketch Series and Best Variety Talk Series in 2015, “SNL” won the former last year for its buzzy, politically charged 42nd installment. It had leading 2/13 odds to repeat this year.
See Emmy Awards: Full list of winners
“SNL”‘s 43rd season earned 21 nominations this year, including nine acting bids. It received seven statuettes at last weekend’s Creative Arts Awards, including Best Comedy Guest Actress for Tiffany Haddish.

Over the weekend, NBC’s legendary variety program “Saturday Night Live” won seven more trophies at the Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday night. It prevailed for comedy guest actress (Tiffany Haddish), variety directing (Don Roy King), music and lyrics, production design, lighting design, make-up and technical direction.
The show now has a mind-blowing 71 Emmy wins in its 43-year run, way ahead in the all-time record books for any series. The next closest series for the all-time marks held by “Game of Thrones” with 45 and “Frasier” with 37. “SNL” has got three more shots at the primetime ceremony on Monday, September 17, so how many more victories will it achieve to bump up its total haul even more? Those categories are Variety Sketch Series (where it is a virtual lock to win), Comedy Supporting Actress and Comedy Supporting Actor (with Alec Baldwin and Kenan Thompson).

The 21st Annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards ceremony was billed as a “Return to Hollywood.” Backdrops from classic films dotted the interior of the Ray Dolby Ballroom lobby. Johnny Crawford and his Orchestra kicked off the evening’s festivities with “Hooray for Hollywood.” Even a handful of the evening’s big winners were films that fit the theme perfectly.
As expected, “La La Land” continued its storybook run through awards season, with David Wasco’s team winning for Contemporary Film. In an upset, Wynn Thomas and the team from “Hidden Figures” took home honors in Period Film, despite “Hail, Caesar!” being the only of the category’s nominees to also pick up a nom for Oscars night. “It’s been a long journey to this moment,” said Thomas, who described being nominated at the very first Art Directors Guild award for “Mars Attacks!” “I’m so...

After 41 years and 12 Emmy nominations (including one win in 2013), production designer Eugene Lee is the definition of modest when it comes to his work on “Saturday Night Live.” “If it looks good, I always think it’s by accident,” he told IndieWire recently from his studio in Connecticut. “I only see the mistakes. But guess what? You have the chance to make it better next week.”

Lee, who has been with the show since the very beginning, had plenty of stories to share about what it’s like to create these miniature worlds in a super-compresssed time frame. His “SNL” work “week,” as he explains it, begins on Wednesday, with a 3pm read-through — “it doesn’t usually start until later, but it’s scheduled for 3.”

On Wednesday, January 14, at 3 a.m., sleep-deprived Saturday Night Live writer James Anderson asked a fellow writer, Kent Sublette, “What about this idea?” Anderson, recently obsessed with the video game Dragon Age: Inquisition, proposed a sketch about a medieval castle beset by a huge fire-breathing dragon and the castle-dwellers who pause to sing about their imminent deaths instead of just running away. By Wednesday evening, following a pitch meeting and a huddle with executive producer Lorne Michaels and the show’s host, Kevin Hart, Anderson and Sublette’s script was approved. Titled “The Journey,” the skit would require an elaborate castle set, and a dragon, to be built in less than 48 hours. Around 9 p.m., SNL’s four-man production-design team sprang into action. Keith Raywood, a 30-year veteran of the show, was tasked with drafting blueprints for “The Journey.” Steve Paone drove the designs to the Brooklyn warehouse where they...

The Art Directors Guild has announced nominees for the group's 19th annual awards, and films that have come on strong as of late like "American Sniper" and "Nightcrawler" were in the mix along notable extravagant displays in the period and fantasy categories. However, there were a few missing pieces. In the fantasy arena, both "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Maleficent" came up short, while "Exodus: Gods and Kings" missed in the period department. The most shocking snub might be "Mr. Turner's" in that field, however. (And it would have been great to see "Snowpiercer" get some love here, but, alas.) As a reminder, the Guild implemented a new rule this season. Period films must now have the majority of sets and locations designed to portray a time period at least 20 years prior to the present awards year. Contemporary films, therefore, must have the majority of...

The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found...

They're not the Oscars, but it's still good that there are awards for the people who make our television and film experiences so visually stunning. The Art Directors Guild has just announced the nominees for its 2012 awards.
The Guild honors production designers in television, film and advertising, dividing each medium into distinct categories. The result is that some productions not used to getting a lot of awards love do in fact get mentioned.
Take "Community" for example. While you'd be hard-pressed to find a TV critic who doesn't think this is one of TV's best comedies, the show gets nominated for virtually zero awards. The Art Directors Guild, however, took notice when appropriate -- the bizarre, visually interesting and incredible "Pillows and Blankets" episode (a Zap2It pick for one of the best episodes of the year) is nominated.
Of course, lots of the usual suspects make the list as...

As anyone who watched James Franco's take on Oscar hosting can tell you, Hollywood award shows can be weird, weird things. Whether it's Adrien Brody planting a kiss on Halle Berry or just Ricky Gervais insulting everyone in the audience, things can get strange very fast.
But for certain awards, they don't need all the fanfare (or malice) to entice audiences; sometimes the nominees alone are enough. The Art Directors Guild awards fall squarely into this category, with their wide-ranging nominees for excellence in production design, announced last night. Where else would "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," "Captain America," and "Anonymous" all be nominated for something?
The announcement of the winners will be made at the annual awards ceremony on Feb. 4.

The Art Directors Guild has announced the nominees for its 16th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards, to be handed out Feb. 4 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Art Direction may not be at the top of your priority list for movies or TV, but I think it should be higher than many people hold it. Without art direction the tone of what you watch would be greatly impacted. I love being transported into a unique universe, and art direction helps make my movie and TV viewing experiences more enjoyable.
