Jim Nabors and Frank Sutton in "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C".
By Lee Pfeiffer
Jim Nabors, who epitomized the image of a friendly country boy, has died at age 87 at his home in Hawaii. Nabors was plucked from obscurity when Andy Griffith caught his nightclub act in L.A. in the early 1960s and cast him in the role of Gomer Pyle, the affable but simple-minded filling station attendant in "The Andy Griffith Show". The program was always among the top shows in the ratings and Nabors' exposure on the show gained him instant fame. The character of Gomer became as iconic as Griffith's Sheriff Andy Taylor and Don Knotts' deputy Barney Fife. Nabors' popularity extended into a second career as a pop singer. When he first sang on an episode of "The Andy Griffith Show", many viewers thought his operatic baritone voice was dubbed. However, they soon...

The world of cinema certainly has had its share of sympathetic bumbling and stumbling characters rich in both comedic and tragic layers and anything else in between. Some of these movie misfits are misunderstood and actually more aware then they appear. The combination of being slow-witted, clumsy, awkward, inept, unstable–it all has its entertaining points in the hapless scheme of things. Importantly, these bumbling and stumbling film figureheads generate a kind of loose-minded and in some cases underlying poignancy that resonates so soundly for global moviegoers to observe with embraced enthusiasm.
So let us take a look at a selection of klutzy candidates (both in seriousness and silliness) that inspire us to chuckle and root for in the column Whoops…Did I Do That?: Top 10 Film Bumblers and Stumblers (Note: the listing of the choices below are not in any particular order of preference):

I'm mighty glad how things worked out.
Things always seem to work out at the end of the day in Mayberry. Along with Andy Taylor's (Andy Griffith) uncanny ability to manage his son Opie (Ron Howard) and his officious deputy Barney (Don Knotts), the clean, moral endings are what makes The Andy Griffith Show (1960-68) what it is. Can you even read the name of this show without whistling? I Love Lucy is perhaps the only theme tune that comes close to being as instantly recognizable as Earle Hagen and Herbert W. Spencer's opening whistle. The first thing about this new Blu-Ray edition of season one of The Andy Griffith Show is that it seemed to spring out, fully formed with its first episode as strong as all the others. And it is a strong show, simple and warm-hearted. Of all the old 'classics' I've revisited in reviews like this,...

‘Death Occurred Last Night’ and 3 Decades-Old TV Shows Are the Best Blu-ray/DVD Releases of the Week
Welcome back to This Week In Discs! If you see something you like, click on the title to buy it from Amazon. Death Occurred Last Night A young woman has gone missing, and while that’s distressing enough for her father it’s made worse by the fact that she’s mentally challenged and has the awareness of a child. Her concerned father pressures the police to step up their search, but as he and the detectives narrow in on the truth it becomes clear that they may be too late. This dark, violent Italian thriller was a bit rough upon its release, and the years since haven’t made it any softer. Part procedural, part suspense, the film doesn’t shy away from the sex or violence and is most definitely not for the PC crowd. If the scene where good old dad helps his gorgeous adult daughter put on her bra doesn’t stop some...

Raleigh, N.C. — The widow of actor Andy Griffith has gotten a permit to tear down the house where he lived for many years on the North Carolina waterfront, upsetting friends who had hoped it would be preserved as a museum or Graceland-type estate.
Cindi Griffith obtained the demolition permit Monday, according to Dare County records. County officials and friends confirmed the permit is to demolish a smaller house along the Roanoke Sound that Griffith bought in the 1950s, not the larger house that he and Cindi built nearby several years ago.
William Ivey Long, the Tony Award-winning costume designer whose parents were friends with Griffith and his first wife, Barbara, said Griffith told him in 2007 that he wanted to preserve the older home as a museum. The two discussed the possibility when Long had an exhibit of his costumes at the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, Long said.

The widow of actor Andy Griffith plans to demolish the actor's former home, the Associated Press reports. Cyndi Griffith received a permit Monday to demolish the house, a move that is upsetting to the late actor's friends. They had hoped the home would be converted into a museum celebrating Griffith, as Graceland does for Elvis Presley.
One acquaintance says he spoke with Griffith about the museum idea before he passed. Tony Award-winning costume designer William Ivey Long, whose parents were friends with Griffith, recalls a discussion with the "Matlock" star about the possibility in 2007. Long says Griffith wanted the museum to include memorabilia from his careers in both acting and music.
Griffith's will, dated two months before his 2012 death, makes no mention of the museum, or the property in question. He bought the house, smaller than the one he lived in with Cindi when he died, after experiencing his first real sucess.

Raleigh, N.C. — Andy Griffith led by example on the set of his television show, teaching a 6-year-old boy that true leadership requires not only confidence and hard work but also humility, Academy Award-winning film director Ron Howard said in recorded remarks Sunday.
Howard's remarks were played during a Griffith tribute at the 23rd annual Mayberry Days celebration in Mount Airy. It's the first Mayberry Days held since Griffith, a native of Mount Airy, died July 3 at the age of 86 at his home in Manteo. The three-day event typically attracts 25,000 to 30,000 people.
"Andy's impact on my life and my approach to my work really can't be measured," Howard said. "The balance that he sustained between focused, creative effort and this overt, playful enjoyment that he got out of working hard with people that he liked, doing a show he loved, was something that I hope I'll always remember and emulate.

With the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards coming this Sunday, claims of snubs are running rampant. Sure, NBC’s Community and Parenthood (airing tonight) are topping the list of this year’s slights, but they aren’t the first, nor are they the last.
Everyone has his or her favorite TV show, actor or actress. Sometimes a show struggles to maintain decent ratings while viewers and critics believe it’s the best series on TV. However, just because a program gets praise doesn’t mean it will get bigger ratings — or even awards, for that matter.
How does this happen? Answer: The Primetime Emmys are run and voted on by members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Translation: not viewers. Voting occurs in the summer, and although branches of the ATAS vote for just their respective categories, all are allowed to vote for the “best program categories.
