If you are a horror fan then you might have heard about the director duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who gave us brilliant horror films like 2022’s Scream and 2019’s Ready or Not and now they are back with their new and even campier horror film Abigail. Written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick, the new horror film is a reimagining of the 1936 Universal Classic Monsters film Dracula’s Daughter and it follows the story of a group of kidnappers who are told to kidnap the daughter of a very powerful man and keep her in the house for 24 hours, but they quickly realize that the daughter might not be what she seems. Abigail stars Alisha Weir, Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Will Catlett, Kathryn Newton, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, Giancarlo Esposito, and Matthew Goode. So, if you loved the horror, survival, and gory elements of Abigail here are some...

The legend of Dracula is explored from a new angle with The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log,” the seventh chapter in Bram Stoker’s influential novel.
The film’s home video release includes an audio commentary with director André Øvredal and producer Bradley J. Fischer, among other special features.
Here are eight things I learned from the Last Voyage of the Demeter commentary:
1. The Last Voyage of the Demeter spent 21 years in development.
Phoenix Pictures acquired the rights to the film, originally titled Demeter, over two decades before the movie made its way to the screen.
“It’s been a solid 21 years since my producing partners, Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer, and I, optioned the screenplay that we adapted into this film,” Fischer explains at the beginning of the commentary.
“And I’ve been part of it for something like three years, I think,” adds Øvredal.

Evildoers beware! Sylvester Stallone is getting back in the ring with Amazon MGM Studios to develop Samaritan 2, a sequel to the Italian Stallion’s 2022 superhero action movie. Bragi F. Schut, who wrote the first film, returns to pen the sequel, with Stallone producing alongside his Balboa Productions partner Braden Aftergood. In addition to producing the film, Stallone reprises his role as Joe from the original.
Here’s the official synopsis for Samaritan:
Thirteen-year-old Sam Cleary (Javon “Wanna” Walton) suspects that his mysterious and reclusive neighbor Mr. Smith (Sylvester Stallone), is actually a legend hiding in plain sight. Twenty-five years ago, Granite City’s super-powered vigilante, Samaritan, was reported dead after a fiery warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis. Most believe Samaritan perished in the fire, but some in the city, like Sam, have hope that he is still alive. With crime on the rise and the city on the brink of chaos,...

Amazon MGM Studios is going back for superhero seconds.
The streamer is developing a sequel to Samaritan, its 2022 action movie starring Sylvester Stallone, and has hired Bragi F. Schut to pen the script. Schut also wrote the first movie.
Stallone is returning as producer, as is his Balboa Productions partner Braden Aftergood. Stallone is also reprising his starring role with a deal made prior to the actors strike.
Samaritan, directed by Julius Avery, told of a young boy who is saved from a beating by a sanitation worker. The boy comes to believe that the older man is a superhero who disappeared 20 years earlier, after an epic battle with his archenemies. The movie, which premiered exclusively on Prime Video on Aug. 26, 2022, in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide, overperformed for the company and was the No. 1 film on the service for three consecutive weeks, according to Amazon.
Schut wrote the first script on spec.

Movie-goers rejected Dracula not just once but twice this uear. Universal released two well-reviewed Dracula projects – the horror comedy Renfield and the more serious The Last Voyage of the Demeter – and both of them tanked at the box office. Renfield couldn’t even crack the $27 million mark at the global box office, and Demeter barely made it over the $20 million mark. Trying to recoup some of their losses, Universal gave The Last Voyage of the Demeter a VOD release just two and a half weeks after it reached theatres. Now it has been announced that the film will be receiving a digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release on October 17th – and it’s coming to home video with deleted scenes and an alternate opening.

2023 is a year when movie-goers rejected Dracula not just once but twice. It's not quite Spooky Season just yet, but Universal is getting a head start on the festivities. After unveiling "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" in theaters to rather split reviews, the monster movie set on a boat unfortunately ended up foundering in the stormy waters of the box office. Those disappointing returns hopefully won't put an end to more outside-the-box adaptations of the classic Universal monsters, as this film was based on a single haunting chapter from Bram Stoker's original "Dracula" novel, but that's cold comfort to the cast and crew of hardworking, monster-loving talent.
In a sign of the times, however, it's taken only a few weeks after the theatrical release of "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" for the horror flick to stretch its leathery wings and make its way to a device near you. Having lost most of its screens to bigger blockbusters like "Blue Beetle,...

The following contains major spoilers for The Last Voyage of the Demeter.
If the horror genre has a grandfather, it’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula. First published in 1897, the epistolary novel follows a group of English socialites who cross paths with a centuries-old vampire traversing the continent in search of fresh victims. From Francis Ford Coppola and Werner Herzog to Stephen King and Mel Brooks, it seems nearly every horror creator has reimagined the legendary text. After more than two centuries and countless variations, you’d think there’d be nothing left on these literary bones.
Enter The Last Voyage of the Demeter: André Øvredal’s take on Stoker’s seventh chapter. A short, but pivotal episode in the vampire’s saga, this adaptation fleshes out the log of a doomed vessel and unearths an entirely new tale from the ashes of an old story.
Dracula begins in Transylvania.

The box office underperformance of The Mummy back in 2017 notably spelled the end of Universal’s “Dark Universe” plans, the film intended to kickstart a Marvel-style universe for the Universal Monsters to hang around in. With the “Dark Universe” dead on arrival, Universal quickly pivoted to smaller one-shot horror tales, kicking off with The Invisible Man in 2020.
Made on a budget of just $7 million, director Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man scared up $144 million worldwide right before the pandemic decimated the box office, suggesting that Universal had finally figured out a way to turn their iconic monsters into box office stars again.
But then came Renfield earlier this year, a horror-comedy take on Dracula and his loyal henchman. Made on a reported production budget of $65 million, Renfield was a flop in theaters back in April of this year, sinking its fangs into just $26.7 million at the box office. Just a few short months later,...

This article contains major spoilers for "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" (and also for the 126-year-old novel "Dracula.")
"The Last Voyage of the Demeter" opens on a very familiar sight to those who've read (or are even vaguely familiar with) Bram Stoker's original novel: a foundering ship run aground on an English beach in the middle of a fierce rainstorm, without a single living soul left on board. As concerned onlookers descend upon the wreck, the very atmosphere fills with dread and fear once more and more rescuers realize that something very wrong has happened here. The discovery of the captain's log only confirms these suspicions, documenting an innocuous enough voyage that started out like any other ... before ending in abject tragedy and death. As someone reads through each journal entry, we flashback to the last voyage of the Demeter to pinpoint exactly where the journey went awry.

This post contains spoilers for "The Last Voyage of the Demeter."
Dracula might have been around for centuries as of the beginning of Bram Stoker's "Dracula," but the latest film featuring the undead vampire -- "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" -- represents something of a dying breed these days. Much will (and has) be written about the obvious parallels drawn between this and 1979's "Alien," but there remains an important lesson to be learned from the success of Ridley Scott's horror masterpiece. By and large, the genre thrives in simplicity. And when writers constrain themselves by setting a story in one location, those limits paradoxically allow for more storytelling possibilities to leap off the screen.

The horror film from director André Øvredal, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, feels like it was intended to be a gothic set piece that affected a slow burn on the crew and audience to create a lasting horror experience. Instead, the film proves neither interesting nor scary in the sense that it is ostensibly supposed to be a horror film.
The story is culled from a chapter in the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker, that chronicles the journey of the merchant ship Demeter as it transports unmarked wooden crates from Carpathia to London. Once at sea, strange occurrences beset the ship and when the ship finally arrives on the English shores, it is a crewless, derelict wreck.

Time to put away the toys, the comics, and even the big WWII history book at the old multiplex for this week’s new (but a tad old) release. I say “old” since it springs from a literary classic, one that has inspired so many cinematic adaptations (actually it has left its “mark” on all manner of media). I seem to recall its main character as a possible game show trivia answer as to which fictitious creation has been played by the greatest number of actors. So, what’s the “hook” with this? It’s not just a “straight” retelling. No, the filmmakers have taken one chapter of the original novel and have expanded it into a feature film since it’s often just a minute or two in most versions. And so now we’ll get the full “scoop” of how that “king of the vampires”, Dracula. insured that...

In the saturated cinematic world of bloodsuckers, it’s important to carve a niche to help the film stand out from its predecessors. For André Øvredal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter, the visual palette drenched in melancholic grays and blues are effective in creating atmosphere, but the film falls prey to predictability.
Written by Bragi F. Schut and Zak Olkewicz and starring Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, David Dastmalchian, Woody Norman and Liam Cunningham, it’s no secret Universal is desperate to get its monster cinematic universe off the ground. This entry into the monster lore is just another backdoor pilot to try and upstart a cinematic Monster universe that may never come to fruition.
The Last Voyage begins in Whitby, England 1897, where the Demeter is shipwrecked, and desolate. The local police discover and try to investigate but are too spooked to continue. The film then backtracks to four weeks earlier in Romania.

Universal has unleashed another brand new featurette for The Last Voyage of the Demeter, this one titled “Creating Dracula” and putting the spotlight on star Javier Botet.
Botet plays a particularly monstrous version of Count Dracula in the upcoming horror movie, which director André Øvredal refers to as “feral” and “animalistic.”
“He’s just so good. The way he moves… the way he turns his neck. It was so… frightening,” co-star Corey Hawkins praises Botet’s creature performance in the featurette video.

“He’s just so good. The way he moves… the way he turns his neck. It was so… frightening,” co-star Corey Hawkins praises Botet’s creature performance in the featurette video.

This desire led to Øvredal casting Javier Botet as Demeter’s Dracula, and the monstrous take on the horror icon is fully revealed in an official image gallery today.

Known to horror fans for playing terrifying roles in films including [Rec], The Conjuring 2, and It: Chapter 2, Javier Botet is back on the big screen this summer in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and this time around he’s sinking his teeth into none other than Dracula.
It’s no secret at this point that The Last Voyage of the Demeter adapts a chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel, centered on a group of characters being killed off one-by-one by Dracula aboard a Russian schooner. Javier Botet plays a bestial version of the iconic bloodsucker in the upcoming horror movie, and we now have a nice clear look at the character design thanks to both a new TV spot for the movie as well as Fangoria’s latest cover story.

Dracula is back on the big screen in Universal’s horror-comedy Renfield, and we won’t have to wait long to see Dracula’s next bloody adventure. Universal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter is bringing Dracula back to theaters yet again on August 11, 2023, and today the film’s official MPA rating has been revealed. Like Renfield, this one is also rated “R”.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter is rated “R” for “bloody violence.”
Based on Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel, the horror movie will tell a unique Dracula story on the high seas, and the trailer (below) gave us our first look at this film’s incarnation of the iconic blood-sucker. Unlike many adaptations that depict Dracula as a human being, it seems The Last Voyage of the Demeter is leaning into Dracula being a full-on bat monster.

Universal's had an ... interesting ... time, to say the least, trying to produce movies related to the classic Universal monsters. Nobody can forget (although you should probably try) the disastrous effort to jumpstart a cinematic universe with 2017's Tom Cruise-starring "The Mummy," a movie so dead-on-arrival that it spurred two viral memes: that accidental trailer upload with no actual sound, and the ultimate cart-before-the-horse moment in dubbing the franchise "The Dark Universe" before it was ever actually a sure thing. The studio managed to right the boat somewhat with much more of a standalone approach in the years since, however, between Leigh Whannel's excellent "The Invisible Man" and, to a lesser extent, the upcoming "Renfield" (you can read /Film's review by Chris Evangelista here).
Now, however, it finally seems as if Universal is properly going back to its horror roots with its next effort, "The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

An eclectic, wearied crew of working class stiffs; a mysterious last-minute change in the manifest that has them claiming unknown cargo; and a beast beneath the boards that’s picking them off one by one. It sounds like the stuff of Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking sci-fi/horror mashup, Alien (1979), but it could just as easily describe a brief and brutal section of Bram Stoker’s original 1897 novel, Dracula.
The last voyage of the Demeter, a Russian sailing vessel intended to cross between 19th century Bulgaria and Victorian England, comprises a mere five pages in the book, but they’ve left an impression on most readers who stumbled across them in the last century. Yet despite myriads of Dracula adaptations in the same number of years, the chapter’s never been extensively explored by an original film. Until now.

Thirteen-year-old Sam Cleary (Javon “Wanna” Walton) suspects that his mysterious and reclusive neighbour Mr. Smith (Sylvester Stallone) is actually a legend hiding in plain sight. Twenty years ago, Granite City’s super-powered vigilante, Samaritan, was reported dead after a fiery warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis. Most believe Samaritan perished in the fire, but some in the city, like Sam, have hope that he is still alive. With crime on the rise and the city on the brink of chaos, Sam makes it his mission to coax his neighbour out of hiding to save the city from ruin.
There’s something about Julius Avery‘s Samaritan that reminds me of a 2000s action-thriller, and I mean that in the best way possible. Some people have a sour taste in their mouths...

“Many years ago, a battle between good and evil was waged between Samaritan and Nemesis, twin brothers who became sworn enemies. They were freakishly strong, but they unintentionally hurt people. The residents of Granite City grew to fear the brothers. They waited until the family slept, then boarded up their home and set it on fire. The parents were burned alive, but the twins were unscathed. Samaritan grew to fight for justice and be a protector. But Nemesis, consumed by revenge, wanted the world to suffer.
“Samaritan tried to contain his brother’s fury, so Nemesis forged a powerful weapon, a hammer that he poured all his hate and rage into. It was the only thing that could destroy Samaritan.
“Samaritan and Nemesis died in a blast during the battle. It was a story everyone in Granite City has been told.

Review: Speaking on behalf of JoBlo.com, I can say without a doubt that we all love Sylvester Stallone (we even have a show – Sylvester Stallone Revisited – dedicated to him). Personally, I have a soft spot for Stallone’s 1990s films which featured him playing the closest thing to a superhero before the days of Marvel Studios and the Dceu.

There’s a standard road map for an actor like Sylvester Stallone — at 76, still looking good, but no longer with a body made of rock(y) — to enter the comic-book movie zone, and that’s for him to play a figure like the righteous Ravager Stakar Ogord in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” or to voice King Shark in “The Suicide Squad.” That’s all likable nostalgic novelty casting. But what if Stallone, who in his way has played indomitable superheroes for decades (think “Rambo” and its sequels or “The Expendables” and its sequels), wants to go full avenger and portray a total comic-book demigod?
He’ll star in a chintzy slice of hellfire like “Samaritan,” based on the Mythos Comics graphic novel that was published in 2014. It’s set in Granite City, an everyday dystopia where Stallone lugs his body around with a reluctant roughneck shamble. He plays...

Samaritan is a new urban superhero action movie directed by Julius Avery and written by Bragi F. Schut. The film stars Sylvester Stallone, Dasha Polanco (Orange Is the New Black), Javon “Wanna” Walton (Euphoria) and Pilou Asbæk (Uncharted). This gritty story starts with promise, but the pacing comes to a screeching halt early on and never recovers. The cast is a solid mix of talented actors, but the script’s limitations restrict them. When stripped down to the basics, Samaritan is a colorless venture that’s very much been there, done that, especially for Stallone.
The cold, dank, post-apocalyptic location of Granite City needs heroes. The city’s people are stuck between two factions: those who idolize the costumed hero, the Samaritan, and those who worship the volatile supervillain, Nemesis — these two are identical twins. Twenty-five years ago, both of them died in a warehouse fire, with Nemesis leaving behind...

Just like Gotham, the fictitious metropolis of Granite City sucks. As multiple newscasts tell us, there’s a civil-servant strike dragging into its third month, but widespread economic insecurity was already the norm. Dark, dirty, and crime-ridden, it’s not the kind of place anyone wants to grow up. So it’s no wonder that sweet tween Sam clings to any hero he can find — especially Granite City’s own dearly departed superhero: Samaritan.
Julius Avery’s “Samaritan” opens with a giddy monologue from Sam that tells us Samaritan’s backstory, and Bragi F. Schut’s screenplay (inspired by the Mythos Comics graphic novels he created with Marc Olivent and Renzo Podesta) doesn’t hesitate to pile on the exposition. Years ago, a pair of gifted brothers possessed of super-strength and power were made miserable by the denizens of Granite City, who burned down their house and killed their parents in the blaze.
