Have a yen for the music, style and glamour of ’60s Swinging London? Edgar Wright’s hybrid time capsule / music extravaganza / horror thriller is an audiovisual delight from one end to the other. Young women from different decades seek to conquer London by different means — they meet as soul twins in a ghost world, where bloodsoaked murders haunt their dreams. Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy are the psychic twins; stars Rita Tushingham, Terence Stamp and the late Diana Rigg bring the authenticity. Soho can boast the most creatively ‘alive’ visuals of 2021.

Illuminative, the Native woman-led social justice organization, has announced the launch of the Indigenous House at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
The Indigenous House will open its doors on Main Street in Park City, Utah, where it will spotlight the creativity of Native peoples, unveil new research on Native voices in media and provide a space for community members and allies to explore issues that impact Native peoples.
“We are beyond thrilled to open the doors to the Indigenous House for the very first time at Sundance Film Festival,” Crystal Echo Hawk, founder and executive director of Illuminative, said in a statement. “Storytelling is a powerful force for change, and we’ve seen firsthand how impactful Native representation is. The entertainment industry has always been one of the biggest perpetrators of our erasure, but Native peoples have flipped the script and are breaking barriers and making incredible strides in representation.

The first line of Amazon’s spy thriller “All the Old Knives” hints at the troubles to come: “Something has gone terribly amiss.”
At one point Kate Winslet, Michelle Williams, and Idris Elba were all rumored to be attached, but fell away over the years. So how, exactly, did Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton get talked into what feels like an early-aughts, made-for-cable movie?
A stiffly somber Pine, entombed in turtlenecks and long scarves, is introduced like he’s in one of those perfume commercials celebrities try to keep hidden overseas. Despite a few moments of tense intrigue, the rest of the film too often follows suit.
Most of the action hinges on an event that took place several years ago. In flashback, we see shockwaves ripple through the CIA’s office in Vienna, as agency heads Wallinger (Laurence Fishburne) and Compton (Jonathan Pryce) share news of a violent airplane hijacking by Chechen rebels.

Director Edgar Wright has always enjoyed merging disparate genres and styles in his films, from the combination of mid-life crisis dramedy and sci-fi fantasy of “The World’s End” to the action-musical mashup that is “Baby Driver.” His latest, “Last Night in Soho,” is so audacious and unusual that even the film’s cinematographer struggled for a moment to classify it. “It’s a color noir,” Chung-hoon Chung told IndieWire in a recent interview. “It’s kind of a horror movie, but not really… really, it’s a coming of age story.”
Chung’s attempts to define the film and find a style for it began when he was shooting “Zombieland: Double Tap” in Atlanta and heard from Wright, who sent Chung the script and a mood reel. “Once I saw the mood reel I understood exactly what he had in mind,” Chung recalled. “It played like a movie. There were shots from other movies,...

Production designer Marcus Rowland has followed Edgar Wright through plenty of genres and visual styles, but “Last Night in Soho” marks the first time he’s jumped back in time with the director. “That’s the exciting thing about working with Edgar as a director,” explains Rowland, “he doesn’t really want to repeat what he’s done.” The film offered the designer the opportunity to dive into 1960’s London, recreate famous landmarks, and dip his toes into horror. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
When “Last Night in Soho” time travels to the 60’s, it often does so by depicting Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy) performing in a club. The most famous of them is the iconic Cafe de Paris, which serves as an enormous set piece for several key moments towards the start of the film. “It’s not really a recreation,” admits Rowland, “we took some of the key...

Although it begins as an apparently straight-forward fish-out-of-water tale of a young fashion designer from rural Scotland attending university in London, director Edgar Wright’s occasionally dazzling Last Night in Soho doesn’t quite succeed in sustaining its edge-of-insanity mystery thriller pace throughout its running time, despite producing some memorable moments and performances along the way.
The aspiring designer, named Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie), is initially taken aback by the perils posited by her new city life as she doesn’t seem to fit in with her new roommate nor with any of her fellow students. So, she sets about finding a new place to live where she can better focus on her studies. To that end she comes across an ad posted by a Miss Collins (the late Diana Rigg) who has a room to rent. Paramount’s “Rocketman” has taken off as a major Oscar contender thanks to nominations at the Golden Globes and SAG. The musical biopic takes a fantastical look at the life and music of rock star Elton John (Taron Egerton), from his international breakthrough to his struggles with drug addiction. Gold Derby recently conducted video interviews with Egerton, director Dexter Fletcher, costume designer Julian Day, production designer Marcus Rowland, and makeup artist and hairstylist Elizabeth Yianni-Georgiou. Production designers literally set the scene for films, so where and how do they start to build fully realized and immersive worlds?
“Early on, I think the trick is to try to get the director to engage as much as possible,” “Ford v Ferrari’s’ François Audouy said at our Meet the Experts: Production Design panel, moderated by this writer (watch above). “You can try to stimulate conversation and start talking about things.”
After that, Audouy does research and tries to load up his walls with as many images as possible. “I like to do it in story order so you start to get an idea of some of the ideas or some of the images that are constant,” he explained. “And then that wall, you keep iterating and keep changing. You put up location photos or additional research. It’s a constant refining of things to get crisper.”

Like “Rocketman” costume designer Julian Day, production designer Marcus Rowland loved the fact that the film wasn’t going to be a standard biopic of Sir Elton John’s life, but rather a stylized fantasy musical.
“Dexter [Fletcher, the director] always had that in mind when I was first meeting him,” Rowland told Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Production Design panel, moderated by this writer (watch above). “We’re not doing a historically accurate portrayal of his life. It’s his recollection of his memories. So that gave us a lot more freedom, which, I feel, is one of the fun things as a designer. We weren’t slavishly following accurate, historical locations … or places that were in Elton’s life. We were able to reimagine it. We always started with as a basis, we looked in reference — and there’s a ton of references for Elton — but like Julian, we...

This biopic of the legend Elton John is very different. It is unconventionally and expertly mounted, giving an insight into the life of the performer.
Like Elton's life, the narrative begins on a dramatic note. An outrageously dressed Elton barges into a psychotherapy session where he admits to his addiction and is prodded to tell his story, so that he may get relief from his maladies after the cathartic experience.
The narrative, in a typical trajectory of rise-fall-rise is told via dreamlike, fantasy flashbacks where Elton's songs are used to comment on the action of the moment. It is thus a sort of a jukebox musical, told entirely in an ultra-flamboyant style, from John's perspective. It aims to be seen as what amounts to a brave self-portrait.
His memories take him back to his childhood, when as a child, born Reginald Dwight (played by Matthew Illesley), he felt like an awkward,...

Paramount has high hopes for “Rocketman,” the Elton John biopic starring Taron Egerton as the legendary performer. Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16, the film comes on the heels of Fox’s massively successful Freddie Mercury movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” and could capitalize on audiences’ newly discovered interest in rock star stories that transport them to their youthful memories.
Costume designer Julian Day and director Dexter Fletcher had worked together on “Rhapsody,” which Fletcher completed after Bryan Singer’s departure. But although both movies deal with the lives of rock stars, there’s a crucial difference.
“The first and foremost thing [about ‘Rocketman’] was that we weren’t doing a straight biopic like ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’” Day says. “It was always planned as a fantasy musical. So that was the starting point for the costumes, hair and makeup, production design … everything.”
The craftspeople who worked on the look of the film embraced the strategy.

Marvel's Ant-Man has been in development with Edgar Wright since before Iron Man was released in 2008, and despite now having a 2015 release date, an ensemble cast, and a filming date scheduled, the studio and director have announced today that they are parting ways on the project. “Marvel Studios and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on Ant-Man due to differences in their vision of the film,” read an official statement from the studio, today. “The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.” As mentioned in the statement, Ant-Man is still scheduled for release on July 17, 2015, and an undisclosed director has already been hired. However, we still don't know if Edgar Wright's longtime production team—production designer Marcus Rowland, composer Steven Price, and cinematographer Bill Pope—are still...

No movie career is complete without a thematic trilogy, and actor Simon Pegg and director Edgar Wright have got together, after each making a couple of larger, more expensive movies, to add The World's End to Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. The link between the three is the satire on the lives of boozy slackers, on dreary, unchanging small provincial towns and low-budget horror movies. The first was a laddish romcom in which Simon Pegg and chums end up defending an English pub against hordes of zombies out of Romero's Dawn of the Dead. In Hot Fuzz he plays a maverick cop exiled to a country town that more than a little resembles the remote island in The Wicker Man.

In the meantime, watch this cheeky featurette on the trilogy and remember, “there’s no ‘I’ in team, but there’s an ‘I’ in pie.”
Director Edgar Wright confesses, “I remember on Hot Fuzz filming a shoot-out in a pub and saying to [producer] Nira Park, ‘I never want to shoot in a pub again. I’m sick of it.’
“So, all these pub locations we went to for The World’s End? I brought them on myself!”

Working Title Films and Big Talk Productions have started shooting The World’s End, the third installment in Edgar Wright‘s trilogy of comedies, following the successes Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007).
As with the two earlier pictures, Wright co-wrote the script with Simon Pegg, who will once again star alongside Nick Frost and recently announced Rosamund Pike and Paddy Considine, and now the team widens with actors Martin Freeman and Eddie Marsan joining.
In The World’s End, 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World’s End. Oh glorious day! Edgar Wright along with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are back together to wrap up their Blood and Ice Cream trilogy, with The World's End. If you've been anxiously awaiting them to get back together for this final movie (as I have) then today's a good day as the announcement has come in that filming has officially begun.
Apparently Martin Freeman and Ediie Marsan have also joined the cast, so that's not bad news either. I couldn't be more pleased. Edgar Wright has quickly become one of my favorite working directors, and I'm keenly interested in just about anything he does. Shaun of the Dead remains one of my favorite films and nary a week goes by that Scott Pilgrim isn't in my blu-ray player at some point. Call me obsessed, I just don't care.
Anyway, here's the official press release about the start of production:

"Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" hits shelves on DVD and Blu-Ray in November, and Universal has released the full specs for every iteration of Edgar Wright's live-action adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's hit comic book series.
While the movie didn't quite meet expectations at the box office, it was difficult to find anyone who didn't have high praise for Wright's kinetic, effects-driven celebration of everything that made O'Malley's comic so great. And like any good DVD/Blu-Ray release, the movie comes packed with some cool bonus features, too.
Personally, I'm a little intrigued by the deleted scenes and alternate footage, as I managed to sneak into an early workprint of the film and, well... the ending of the unfinished version of the film was quite different from the theater cut I saw.
