On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: You Can’t Expect the Irish to Get Lucky Every Time
One of the biggest tragedies of modern cinema is the unavoidable fact that most movies make you wait at least ten minutes to hear a floating head loudly proclaim, “The penis is evil!” But 1974 was a different time and “Zardoz” is a different kind of movie, so it delivers that exact line before the five-minute mark even arrives. Believe it or not, that’s not even the first Wtf moment in this genitalia-obsessed fantasy epic.

Juan Piquer Simón’s exploitation slasher Pieces (1982) has a bonkers reputation that precedes it, delivering one of horror’s most entertaining audience experiences of all time. The tagline, “It’s exactly what you think it is!” only scratches the surface of the weirdness within. Sure, you get exactly what you expect in terms of gore in this tale of a jigsaw puzzle-obsessed killer with a chainsaw, but the execution is so over the top there’s nothing that really prepares you for the unique brand of madness.
Simon was initially approached to helm a sequel to Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left, but passed because the script he was offered seemed too boring. Then he was offered a 30-page treatment for Pieces, then titled Jigsaw, intended at the time to be a made-for-tv movie. It was so insane that not only was he intrigued, he was determined to make the script believable.

Eli Roth is back. And he’s here for “Thanksgiving.”
For the past decade, Roth has nimbly moved through different genres – erotic thriller (“Knock Knock”), revenge movie (“Death Wish”), family fantasy (“The House with a Clock in Its Walls”), nature documentary (“Fin”) and big budget video game adaptation (next year’s “Borderlands”). But now he’s back with a down-and-dirty horror movie, this time centered around one of the happiest time of year.
In “Thanksgiving,” adapted from a fake trailer that Roth had made for Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s “Grindhouse” project, a superstore’s super sale leads to tragedy. A year later a masked man in a pilgrim costume, known as John Carver, starts taking out the townspeople involved in the tragedy, one by one. And, yes, the kills are just as creative and stomach-churning as you’d expect from the man behind “Hostel,” “Cabin Fever” and “The Green Inferno.

Few moments in recent memory have brought me as much joy as the realization that my IndieWire After Dark partner Alison Foreman had never seen “Pieces.” She’s one of the few people I’ve met whose knowledge of slasher franchises dwarfs my own, so I figured the window to introduce her to the bloodiest chainsaw massacre in Boston history (and the shockingly incompetent investigation that followed it) had closed a long time ago. A young woman lays back on a waterbed, playfully tossing double entendres at her boyfriend. The sounds of “Lady in Red” by Chris De Burgh leak into the room from the party outside, adding an air of mystery to the masked man who emerges from the shadows. Still ready for sex, the young woman teases the masked man about his disguise, but when he doesn’t respond, she realizes that he’s not her boyfriend.
The masked man produces a knife and begins stabbing her stomach, pushing her back down onto the waterbed. Springs stream from the liquidy mattress, and blood splatters on Sears Portrait Studio glam pictures hanging on the wall.

The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering The Nest was Written and Edited by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
While the early to mid-part of the ’80s was the time of the slasher, the later part of the decade decided to try a lot of new things. You had non-slasher sequels like Phantasm 2, Ghoulies 2, Critters 2, and Poltergeist III. You also had cool one-off properties like Bad Dreams, Dead Heat, and Killer Klowns From Outer Space. 1988 alone brought back the killer bug trope and while Juan Piquer Simon has the more famous gross out insect fest with Slugs, the other one is most certainly in the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw camp. On April 25th, Severin Films delivers Worldwide Blu-ray premieres of two of the most infamous titles in ‘80s EuroCult Sci-Fi, Bloody Disgusting has exclusively learned today.

Both 4K restorations also include the U.S. debuts of long-form documentaries on their respective filmmakers. Here’s everything you need to know about both of these releases…

“It’s Halloween. I guess everyone’s entitled to one good scare,” Sheriff Brackett says in John Carpenter’s Halloween. While the seminal slasher delivered no shortage of creepy moments and well-placed scares, the Halloween movies aren’t the only ones to embrace holiday frights. Whether through subtle moments, gross-out gags, potent jump scares, or phobia-inducing chills, Halloween-set horror offers something for everyone – beyond the iconic franchise.
This Halloween, we look back at ten of the scariest moments in non-Halloween horror movies that take place around the best holiday of the year. Halloween, of course!
The Child – Sentient Jack-o-Lantern
Alicianne has just been hired as housekeeper and caretaker to young Rosalie Nordon, who recently lost her mother. Alicianne soon realizes that Rosalie has a supernatural gift, including zombies at her disposal, and uses it to seek revenge on those who piss her off. Atmospheric dread erupts into Fulci-like chaos on Halloween.

This month’s home media releases are off to a fun start as a few of my favorite movies from 2020 are headed to Blu-ray and DVD this week—Paul W.S. Anderson’s Monster Hunter and Josh Ruben’s Scare Me. Beyond that, we have a pair of titles from Vinegar Syndrome that genre fans are going to want to pick up on Tuesday—Cthulhu Mansion and Dark Tower—and there are a few other titles being released on March 2nd, too, including Where is She?, Vampire Virus, and the Nicolas Cage Collection.

“Pieces” (Mil Gritos Tiene La Noche) 1982 Directed by Juan Piquer Simón, Starring Jack Taylor, Christopher George, Lynda Day George, Frank Braña and Paul Smith. Arrow 3 disc Blu-ray, DVD and CD.
Arrow continue to satisfy our hunger for classic slasher movies with their latest release "Pieces" (1982), a classic slice of sickening nostalgia which emerged during the height of the video nasty era.
A Boston college campus is being terrorised by a black-clad maniac who collects body parts from his unfortunate co-ed victims. As the corpses (and red herrings) begin to pile up, can Professor Brown (genre veteran Jack Taylor) unmask the murderer before his morbid puzzle is complete?
Fans of the genre should be incredibly pleased with the treatment given to this three disc collector’s edition. Let’s be clear from the outset, “Pieces” is not the best directed movie you’ll ever see. Director Juan Piquer Simón,...

Give it up for Juan Piquer Simon. Not only did the Spanish director bestow upon the horror world one of the craziest and memorable slashers of all time, Pieces (1983), he also found it within himself to give us Slugs (1988). Not quite as crazy as Pieces (but almost as good), Slugs trades heavily in the J.P. Simon business: a whole lot of weird, a nuclear ton of energy, and gore galore. If you only see one badly dubbed mollusk monster movie, filled with heavy pettin’ and (literally) explosive action, you would be wise to choose Slugs.
Released Stateside by New World Pictures (post Roger Corman years) in February, this Spanish/American coproduction has never been as beloved as J.P.’s killer-on-campus opus, but that’s only because it seems to play out in a more straightforward manner. Trust me; this film brings all the B level goods, with no expiration date in sight.

For a creature that is not inherently scary, the common slug sure has menaced a lot of horror movies. From Night of the Creeps to Slither to The Puppet Masters, the slimy little mollusks have played the villain on screen again and again. But it is only Juan Piquer Simón’s 1988 film Slugs (aka Slugs, muerte viscosa) that gives them top billing. Of all the slug horror movies, this one is the sluggiest.
Slugs is also trashy, gory nonsense, which is to be expected from the director of Pieces, one of the most insane slasher movies ever made. While Slugs lacks the inspired lunacy of Pieces, it’s not for lack of trying. The film stars Michael Garfield as Mike Brady (that’s right), a worker with the health department who suspects that a recent rash of gruesome deaths are the result of a new strain of slug that has...

“Have you ever heard a frog scream?”, the tag-line to George McCowan’s 1972 ecological horror Frogs (out now on Arrow Blu-ray) should have read. Juan Piquer Simon‘s classic 1982 slasher Pieces has finally landed on Blu-ray, and the result is well worth the wait. Grindhouse Releasing has packed their release with all kinds of love and affection from the beautiful picture presentation to a bevy of special features and extras. I was too slow to order and missed being one of the lucky 3000 to nab a copy that comes with a replica of the infamous nudie puzzle featured in the film’s opening, but even without that extra this is still one of the best home video releases of the year so far. Keep reading for a look at the movie (from my earlier review) and at the new Blu-ray release below. The Movie: It’s 1942, and a young boy sits on the floor of his bedroom innocently putting together a puzzle featuring a picture of a fully nude woman. He’s assembling it with the detached focus of someone whose...

One of my first DVD reviews here at TwitchFilm was for the Arrow Video DVD release of Juan Piquer Simon's Pieces. At the time I was a virgin to the wonder of this incredibly bizarre and impossibly entertaining piece of Spanish gore-trash, but over the last five years I've returned to Pieces more than once. When it was announced that the film would be receiving a Blu-ray release from underground home video heroes Grindhouse Releasing, I was beyond excited, and now that I have the disc in hand and I've spent hours combing through its myriad bonus features and easter eggs, I can say like the other critics before me that this is clearly the definitive release of the film, and that it is a...

As diehard horror fans know, Leatherface wasn't the only cinematic killer to rev up a chainsaw, as evidenced by 1982's Pieces, a cult slasher film hitting shelves as a special three-disc Blu-ray on February 23rd from Grindhouse Releasing:
From Diabolik DVD: "Grindhouse Releasing is proud to present the sickest and most violent of all the early '80s slasher movies. A psychopathic killer stalks a Boston campus, brutally slaughtering nubile young college co-eds, collecting body parts from each victim to create the likeness of his mother who he savagely murdered with an axe when he was ten years old! Pieces is a wild, unrated gorefest, with enough splatter and sleaze to shock the most jaded horror fan.
Special Features
- Two complete versions of this shocking gore classic:
Pieces (83 min.) - the original, unrated U.S. theatrical version, presented in English

“It’s exactly what you think it is!”
“You don’t have to go to Texas for a Chainsaw Massacre!”
Indeed. It’s not often that a film will tell you exactly their intention, their mission statement, right up front. With a film like Pieces (1982), it’s a badge of honor, worn proudly, a tattered and bloodied flag waving proudly from its mast on the seas of horror. Not only is Pieces exactly what we think it is, it’s so much more – one of the most cheerfully odd, sleazy slashers to come out of the VHS era. Pull out your slickers folks, things are about to get messy.
Filmed in Spain (subbing for Boston, Mass.), Pieces was released there in August of ’82, with a North American run distributed by Film Ventures International in September of ’83. Surprisingly, it did quite well, bringing in over 2 million Us after playing only 104 theatres.

Closing out the first ever MondoCon with a scream, Death Waltz Records brought its unique, refreshing mindset for event programming to Austin, Texas with a screening of that 4k restoration of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre that's been touring around the country this year. For fans of the film who have likely already devoured this 40th anniversary print, or for those seeking a different kind of experience, there was a twist to the screening. Tobe Hooper's seminal, nightmarish classic was accompanied by a live score by Anton Maiovvi and Umberto.
Death Waltz delivered a similar experience in Los Angeles last year when it welcomed Umberto to live score Juan Piquer Simón's Pieces. The result was a fascinating, moody experiment that elevated the film from a gonzo slasher effort to something slightly more sinister. It probably helped that the dialogue track was absent so Umberto could transport audience members through a synth-heavy aural landscape.

The definition of a slasher film varies depending on who you ask, but in general, it contains several specific traits that feed into the genre’s formula. Author Vera Dika rather strictly defines the sub-genre in her book Games of Terror by only including films made between 1978 and 1984. In other words, she saw it as a movement. When someone describes Brick, they don’t define it as a noir, but instead neo-noir . In other words, it’s a modern motion picture that prominently utilizes elements of film noir, but with updated themes, content, style, visual elements or media that were absent in those from the 1940s and 1950s. So does one consider Scream a slasher film or a neo-slasher, or simply put, a modern slasher?
Some consider Thirteen Women to be the earliest slasher – released all the way back in 1932. Personally I think that is rubbish. Thirteen Women is more like Desperate Housewives on sedatives.

Juan Piquer Simon could be considered Uwe Boll before there was an Uwe Boll. I don’t really think either comparison is fair seeing as how I consider Slugs, Endless Descent, and Pieces to be damn fine b-movies. On the other hand, Pod People or Extraterrestrial Visitors or whatever you want to call it is so flippin’ terrible it’s really only best viewed with the accompaniment of Joel, Crow T. Robot,...

It takes a lot to shock the average horror junkie, because our favorite films are by definition shocking. Because of the nature of these films, often the most jaw-dropping moments aren't necessarily the goriest ones, but rather the surreal non sequitur scenes that virtually come out of nowhere and just as quickly return there. Sometimes we realize upon repeat viewings that such moments do actually move the plot along. However, sometimes they just can't be explained away.
Bad chop suey, Pieces
In the middle of the film, an undercover cop played by Lynda Day George is walking across the dark college campus following a figure (Bruce Le) who she thinks might be the killer. Suddenly, he turns on her and begins attacking her with kung fu moves.

Original Title: Slugs, muerte viscos
Released February 1998
For the second installment of The Liberal Dead’s look at the animal attack sub-genre, we will be taking a look at the 1988 Juan Piquer Simon (Pieces, The Pod People) film Slugs. Based on a 1982 Shaun Hutson novel by the same title, the film revolves around a rural community that becomes over run by carnivorous slugs. Unforgettably cheesy dialog, graphic gore, and a ton of laughs make this a must experience flick for fans of old-school 80s splatter.
This is most certainly one of those, so good its bad type of flicks. Best viewed with friends and perhaps some sort of mind-altering substance. The dialog is so hilariously poorly written and delivered that it is impossible to walk away from this film without memorizing some lines for future use in awkward conversations. When people begin dying in gruesome fashion in a rural New York town, the local health inspector begins an investigation in which he finds that killer mutant slugs, created by toxic waste, are on the rampage. Naturally, no one believes him, and he's forced to take matters into his own hands as the body count rises.
Slugs is a wonderfully cheesy 1988 horror film directed by Juan Piquer (Jp) Simon and based off the book by Shaun Hutson. While you may not be familiar with Jp Simon, you are probably at least aware of two of his more infamous films, Pod People (famously spoofed by MST3K) and Pieces, which is a trashy gore flick that happens to be a personal favorite of mine.

Pieces is completely insane in the best possible way. This classic of the early 80's slasher boom is both incredibly gory and crazy funny without sacrificing it's edge. Juan Piquer Simon created one of the first self-aware slasher spoofs entirely in the cutting room, and it works brilliantly. The gags in the film are played completely straight, and the gore is over the top, but not quite to the point of ridiculousness. Arrow Video have given this film some much needed attention in the UK, and their bonus features are solid enough to consider a double dip for anyone out there who already has the Grindhouse Releasing edition of a few years ago. When you meet him, you'll go to Pieces!Jigsaw puzzles can be maddening. Originally released on DVD in 2000 by Anchor Bay is the slimy classic Slugs, from cult filmmaker Juan Piquer Simon (Endless Descent, Pieces). It has since gone out of print, but Image has gained control of the New World Pictures catalog and is re-releasing it with some killer artwork. Look for it on September 20, 2011.
A small town is plagued by a series of grisly deaths. The local health inspector investigates and discovers that the “killers” are actually a mutant variety of meat-eating garden slugs. It seems that the town had been built on top of a toxic waste dump, which turned the normally harmless slugs into ravenous carnivores.

It seems that the town had been built on top of a toxic waste dump, which turned the normally harmless slugs into ravenous carnivores.

Pieces (Juan Piquer Simon, 1982)
The first time I came across “Pieces” was on a beat up VHS copy I rented from a gas station when I was way too young (and thank you Casey’s counter jockey for allowing an eleven year old to check out anything he wanted as long as he had the cash). I had no idea at the time what I was watching. It was violent, loud, bloody, and made no sense whatsoever. I returned the flick and went about my life, chalking up the whole experience to something I just didn’t grasp yet.
A few years later I came across it again on a bare bones DVD store at a mall. It was something like 3 bucks in a discount bin, so I took a chance with it, and it wasn’t until about halfway through that I realized that...

Becoming more involved in the local film scene here in Portland, Oregon, which has become a hot spot for both television and film productions with the aggressive tax incentives offered by the state, I had heard Kelley Baker's name mentioned numerous times but had never met him even though we were operating in the same circles.
I knew he was a veteran sound designer who worked with fellow Portland resident Gus Van Sant on My Own Private Idaho, Finding Forrester, Good Will Hunting, and the Psycho redux and that he had also worked on the acclaimed Todd Haynes film Far From Heaven. I also knew he was a filmmaker in his own right, having written and directed three feature films – Birddog, Kicking Bird and Gas Cafe – as well as several award-winning short films.
But what I really wanted to know about was all this “Angry Filmmaker” business I kept hearing about.
