The 1967 revision of the "Star Trek" writer's guide starts by asking the reader a simple question: "Can you find the major 'Star Trek' format error in the following 'teaser' from a story outline?"
"Star Trek" is a franchise that comes with many rules and dictums, many derived from its late creator, Gene Roddenberry. Other times they came from story editors and producers across the franchise's nearly-60-year history. And all of them are fiercely debated among fans in countless fanzines, convention halls, and chat boards, as well as on social media.
But rules are made to be broken, aren't they? Or, at the very least, broadly interpreted... like Starfleet's non-interference directive by some captains. And, to paraphrase Kirk, risk was "Star Trek's" business from day one. So let's look at 13 times when the makers of "Star Trek" took a risk and broke the mold.

Since its debut in 1966, Star Trek has boldly gone to nearly every cultural aspect of modern life. The franchise has included 13 feature films with various crews, numerous board and video games, hundreds of action figures, commemorative plates — you name it, and there’s probably a version with a Starfleet logo on it.
But despite all this exploration into other media and fields, Star Trek remains best on television. And after a long drought, the franchise is finally thriving again in its original medium, despite the bumbling of its parent company Paramount. Even with Picard done and Discovery entering its fifth and final season, multiple series are still in production, including the acclaimed Strange New Worlds.
But as the greatest Trek theme song reminds us, it’s been a long road getting from there to here. The Original Series was canceled after a budget-strapped third season in 1969 and only built its following in syndication.

“The Mote in God's Eye”, the 1974 science fiction novel by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, is being considered for a live-action film adaptation, charting the first contact between humanity and an alien species:
‘In the year 3017, humanity is slowly recovering from an interstellar civil war that tore apart the first ‘Empire of Man’. The ‘Second Empire’ is busy establishing control over the remnants left by its predecessor, by force if necessary. The ‘Alderson Drive’ enables ships to travel instantaneously between ‘Alderson points’ in specific star systems.
“After a rebellion on the planet ‘New Chicago’ is quashed, ‘Captain Bruno Cziller’ of the ‘Imperial’ battlecruiser ‘Inss MacArthur’ remains behind as ‘Chief of Staff’ to the new governor,
“‘Commander Roderick Blaine’ is given temporary command of the ship, along with secret orders to take ‘Horace Hussein Bury’, a powerful interstellar merchant suspected of instigating the revolt, to the Imperial capital, ‘Sparta’.

This Star Wars: The Book Of Boba Fett article contains spoilers.
“Return of the Mandalorian” delivers exactly what it says it will. Din Djarin is back, and while he’s fated to help Boba and Fennec, he first addresses many loose threads from The Mandalorian. From reuniting with his clan to getting a new ship, Din is on the metaphorical road in a big way in his crossover appearance in The Book of Boba Fett.
Here are all the Star Wars references and easter eggs we spotted in the episode…
Din Djarin
– Pedro Pascal returns as the out-of-touch Mandalorian foundling. When we saw him last in season two of The Mandalorian, he had handed Grogu (a.k.a. Baby Yoda) over to Luke Skywalker to get him some Jedi education and taken the darksaber from Moff Gideon.
– “I can bring you in warm or I can bring you in cold,...

A lost poem written by Vladimir Nabokov about Superman — in which the Man of Steel envisions a tragic wedding night with Lois Lane and longs to be a mortal man — has been published for the first time.
Written in June 1942 and rejected by the New Yorker, “The Man of To-morrow’s Lament” was penned two years after Nabokov emigrated from Russia to the U.S., with the Lolita author focusing on the American cultural icon — he read the comics to his 8-year-old son — and jumping into one of the biggest...

“Game of Thrones” co-executive producer Vince Gerardis is setting up a production company in Italy, Variety has learned.
The new venture, dubbed Ciao, or Creatività Italiana Americana Organizzata, is the latest move from the Miami-based executive, who specializes in packaging and selling large-scale, world-building film and television projects based on literary properties.
Gerardis is in talks with an Italian publisher for a deal that would give Ciao access to a range of Italian literary talent, with an eye toward “establishing an interesting and fresh business model from what I’ve learned over the years of representing authors,” he told Variety. The Rome-based company is developing four projects and will focus on Italian IP that has the potential to travel. “It’s ‘Italy first,’ with a global view,” he said.

This article contains Star Trek: Lower Decks spoilers.
Because it happens in 2380, Star Trek: Lower Decks is, in theory, a direct sequel to ‘90s era of the franchise. But, spiritually, it sometimes feels like more of a sequel to the first animated Trek series, the 1973 show Star Trek: The Animated Series. So far, Lower Decks has brought back one very obscure shape-shifting alien from that show (the Vendosian in Episode 2) and made references to at least one other, specifically the plant-based aliens the Phylosians in Episode 5.
But the throwback alien reference in Star Trek: Lower Decks episode 7 — “Much Ado About Boimler” — takes the cellular peptide cake. Feel like you’ve seen that orange three-armed alien before? You’re right! He’s the same species Arex, the navigator of the USS Enterprise in The Animated Series.
But what species is that? Well, that’s a good question…

It was rather quietly announced last September that screenwriter and producer Akiva Goldsman had signed a deal with Amazon and its producing partner MGM to develop Larry Niven’s classic 1970 science fiction novel, Ringworld, as a series. Now Goldsman confirms that the project is steadily moving forward.
Goldsman revealed in an interview with Collider that he is currently working on the script for the show, and that Alan Taylor is attached to direct the pilot. Said Goldsman, “Hopefully that will turn into an actual set of moving pictures, but God knows.”
Ringworld tells the story of Louis Wu, a 200-year-old man who lives on Earth in the year 2850 and is recruited to go on a deep space voyage to investigate a gigantic, habitable artificial ring that orbits a distant star and was built by a now-vanished civilization. The book, known for its hard science concepts that influenced both numerous other...

Franklin Richards, the eldest son of Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman and the older brother of Valeria Richards, is one of the oldest teenagers in the Marvel universe. First appearing in Fantastic Four Annual #6 all the way back in November of 1968, he’s since become so powerful that he’s literally created not just one but multiple entire alternate realities, including the Counter-Earth pocket universe where he concealed the many heroes believed to have perished in the Onslaught event of 1996.
Franklin is also an Omega Level Mutant, placing him between two formidable factions in the new Dawn of X era being overseen by narrative architect Jonathan Hickman in which mutants now have the island nation of Krakoa all to themselves as well as worldwide amnesty from the laws of homo sapiens. Back in the 1990s, Will Smith ascended from being the Fresh Prince to being the king of the Fourth of July weekend. Summer blockbusters like Independence Day and Men in Black cemented his position as a box office draw well into the following decade. Naturally, Smith has pursued other avenues as his career has gone on, but arguably 2008's Hancock was the last full-on star vehicle he opened on that coveted weekend.
Developed from a widely hyped spec script titled Tonight, He Comes, the film cast Smith as a stumblebum superhero known as John Hancock, who is widely disliked by the citizens of Los Angeles.
Booze-addled and depressed, Hancock finally resolves to turn his life around with the help of PR consultant...

What with talk of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings television series heating up, I suppose it’s only fitting that the rest of the studio’s slate has been pushed to the back burner, at least temporarily – especially when considering the production’s unprecedented ten-figure price tag.
Nonetheless, seeing as the other day things began falling into place regarding the Tolkien adaptation – with a possible premiere scheduled for 2021, and Peter Jackson back in the mix – Amazon Studios CEO Jennifer Salke has turned her attention to another hotly awaited small screen translation, The Dark Tower.
Last we heard, after falling flat at the box office, the Stephen King fantasy series had finally found a home at Amazon. Unfortunately, though, since then, there hasn’t been much progress, leading many to believe the show was dead in the water. Remember that Dark Tower movie that came out last year? No? I don’t blame you – it was one of the biggest flops of 2017, receiving horrible reviews and being all but disowned by creator Stephen King. Fans of the book series despaired, presumably figuring that the property would never get the careful adaptation it merited. But now they’re getting another bite of the cherry, courtesy of Amazon.
Interestingly, it looks like the show won’t be totally disconnected from the poorly received movie. According to Syfy, the pilot script has been written by the film’s director, Nikolaj Arcel, in collaboration with Anders Thomas Jensen, who’ll oversee the series alongside former Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazzara. Meanwhile, veteran screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, Solo: A Star Wars Story’s Ron Howard and Imagine Entertainment founder Brian Grazer are set to executive produce.

A major emphasis has been put on fast-tracking big-scope genre drama series in the mold of Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, with Sharon Tal, brought in earlier this year as Head Of Event Series, tasked with spearheading efforts. For the last several weeks I’ve been madly reading (and rereading) a huge pile of graphic novels and indie comics sent to me to consider in my capacity as an Eisner Awards judge. Some of these are brilliant and some are just weird (to my eyes), but all of them are at least three months old. Reviewing them here would be lame, because I would be so far behind the curve.
Also, and on another note entirely, there are an awful lot of stories that are skillfully and artfully told but completely uninteresting to me. I don’t know why anyone would want to tell these stories. There are critically acclaimed movies that affect me the same way, and they often win all kinds of awards, so I am clearly missing something.
So let’s talk about something else. Superman and Lois Lane are married again!

If, a decade ago, you would have told me that two of my absolute favorite pieces of media from 2016 would come from the guy who directed the Night at the Museum movies, I'd have said you were nuts. But it actually happened, and Shawn Levy's 21 Laps production company produced both the Oscar-nominated Arrival and the incredibly addictive Stranger Things last year. The company is now continuing its exploration of science fiction; THR reports that they've hired The Spectacular Now, The End of The Tour, and Smashed director James Ponsoldt to direct a film adaptation of Larry Niven's 1971 short story "Inconstant Moon."
This story raises the question: How would you spend your last night on Earth? When the Moon suddenly starts shining brighter, Stan and Leslie realize the sun must have gone nova and they only have a few hours until the Earth rotates into the deadly sunshine.

After racking up eight Oscar nominations — Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay among them — the Arrival team are taking advantage of their expected carte blanche. Per THR, production outfit 21 Laps have tapped their Spectacular Now director, James Ponsoldt, for an adaptation of Hugo Award-winning sci-fi short story “Inconstant Moon.” Based on Larry Niven‘s text and scripted by Daniel Casey (10 Cloverfield Lane), the currently untitled project (that title just doesn’t scream “ticket-seller”) concerns a Los Angeles couple “teetering on breaking up with the backdrop of an apocalyptic-level natural disaster that might end the world come sunrise.”
Fox 2000 are supporting the project, as will Ponsoldt’s own 1978 Pictures and Created By.
And if you’ve yet to see Arrival, do note that Paramount will be giving the picture — which we named one of the best films of 2016 — a nationwide rerelease starting tomorrow gussied up with a little something extra: per a press release,...

Long before Arrival loomed over theaters across the globe, Denis Villeneuve’s poignant sci-fi was angled as a passion project for the director – a primer for his inevitable journey to helming Blade Runner 2049. But with eight Oscar nominations to its name, not to mention scores of rave reviews, Villeneuve’s evocative work of science fiction will be remembered as one of the very best releases of the year.
21 Laps knows all about it, too. The production company headed up by Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen enjoyed an overly successful 2016, working on both Arrival and Netflix phenomenon Stranger Things. The producers of the recently Oscar-nominated Arrival are working on another high-stakes science-fiction story, this time from Hugo-winning Ringworld author Larry Niven. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shawn Levy and his 21 Laps production banner have acquired the rights to Niven’s “Inconstant Moon,” a short story about facing what might very well be your last night on Earth.
Niven’s story opens with the young lovers of the planet ooh-ing and aah-ing over the moon, suddenly far brighter and larger than it’s ever appeared before. Only a few, including the protagonist and his girlfriend, realize that all that extra moonlight has to come from somewhere—like, say, the sun going supernova—and that humanity might be facing its final moments on the planet.
James Ponsoldt has been attached to direct; his last project was the well-received David Foster Wallace biopic The End Of The Tour.

Syfy, in its search for new miniseries to produce, is backtracking a little bit by hooking up with director Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) to bring about a new version of The Wizard of Oz. I say backtracking because this miniseries would be a modern reimaginging of the classic story; much like Tin Man was when it first aired back in 2007 on the same channel (to be fair, it wasn’t called Syfy back then, so maybe that part of history no longer applies). Maybe nobody cares that this has, sort of, been done before; it’s happening regardless.
The miniseries, called Warriors of Oz, will be a fantasy-action retelling of The Wizard of Oz, following a warrior from present day Earth who is transported to the post-apocalyptic future of Oz. According to Deadline, he teams up with three other warriors – Heartless, Brainless, and Coward – and must defeat the evil Wizard,...

Exclusive: Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter director Timur Bekmambetov is venturing into television with Warriors Of Oz, a mini-series project which has landed at Syfy. Bekmambetov will create Warriors Of Oz based on his idea. It is a fantasy-action reimagining of the classic story in which a warrior from present day Earth is transported to a post-apocalyptic future Oz where he must team up with three other warriors, Heartless, Brainless, and Coward, in order to defeat the evil Wizard who has enslaved the land. Bekmambetov is set to executive produce and possibly direct. Search is under way for a writer to pen the mini, which will be produced by Universal Cable Prods. Syfy has been ramping up mini-series development, announcing two four-hour projects at its upfront presentation in April based on Larry Niven’s Ringworld and on Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End with producer Michael De Luca.

Ringworld would follow a team of explores as they travel through space in search of an alien artifact known as Ringworld, an artificial habitat the size of one million Earths. Along the way they discover the leftovers of an ancient advanced civilizations, possible origins of the human race and the salvation for a doomed Earth. Childhood’s End is a chance of pace; it tells the tale of a peaceful alien invasion by the mysterious Overlords,...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut, Don Jon will hit theaters October 18th. The film is a comedy about a man who connects better with computer porn than real women. Morgan, it's time to put in that vacation request.
Meanwhile, Ryan Murphy's sexy drama Open is headed to HBO. The show is supposed to be a frank depiction of human sexuality and modern relationships, but there's no sign of a gay element from the descriptions so far. As with all Ryan Murphy projects, I'm expecting a stunning first season, after which we'll all lose interest except to complain about the show.
Uruguay has taken their final vote on marriage equality and approved it 92-71. The president is expected to sign the bill, and marriages will begin in a few months.
Meanwhile, back in the U.S., Montana has finally repealed their sodomy law. Baby steps.

Universal-owned Syfy reports they are developing mini-series adaptations of "2001: A Space Odyssey" author Arthur C. Clarke's "Childhood's End" and Larry Niven's "Ringworld".
"Childhood's End", written in 1953 "...follows the peaceful alien invasion of Earth by the mysterious 'Overlords', whose arrival ends all war, helps to form a world government and turns the planet into a near-utopia.
"Many questions are asked about the origins and mission of the aliens."
"But they avoid answering, preferring to remain in their spacecraft, governing through indirect rule.
"Decades later, the Overlords show themselves, and their impact on human culture leads to a Golden Age..."
Written in 1970, Niven's "Ringworld" is set in the year 2850 A.D. on Earth.
"...'Louis Gridley Wu' is celebrating his 200th birthday. Despite his age, Louis is in perfect physical condition but is bored. He has experienced life thoroughly and thinking of taking a trip to and beyond the reaches of 'Known Space',...

Syfy unveiled a big slate of projects in development Wednesday (April 10). It includes series projects from "Hannibal" and "Pushing Daisies" creator Bryan Fuller, "The Middleman's" Javier Grillo-Marxuach, Robert Zemeckis and ... Jamie Foxx, who's behind a new horror series at the cable channel.
Foxx will executive produce, direct and write for an untitled horror anthology series set to premiere in October. Syfy name-checks "Tales From the Crypt" and "The Twilight Zone" in describing the show, which will feature "creepy morality tales" based on ideas like envy and superficiality. Other writers on the show include Mike Ferris ("Terminator 3," "The Game") and John E. Pogue ("Everwood").
Some of the other projects in development at Syfy:
"High Moon": Fuller and fellow "Hannibal" writer-producer Jim Danger Gray are behind an adaptation of the novel "The Lotus Caves" by John Christopher. Mining colonies on the moon are plunged into chaos when miners discover a new form of life.
