Folks, I just got done digging through the dustiest, crustiest, mustiest box of 80s schlock that I could get my hands on and… Well, I found something I needed to share with you guys. Now, the art of making an original horror film with unique ideas, clever storytelling, and engaging characters to bounce off a scary antagonist can be damning if not extremely difficult. And this movie is proof that sometimes it can be Too difficult because it has none of those things. 1980’s The Boogey Man (watch it Here) is the story of a pair of siblings as they battle with the trauma of their childhood and the return of an evil entity that once possessed them in a blood-soaked trance. The movie was written, directed, and produced by German actor Ulli Lommel and starred his then wife (Suzanna Love) and her brother Nick Love as the film’s main protagonists.

In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

The actor is ‘buzzing’ to be making a film about drug-taking and football hooliganism directed by his old collaborator Nick Love. Does this mean his time as an unexpected national treasure is nearing an end?
Lock up your mugs and chain down your slags, for something proper naughty is on the horizon. Danny Dyer, the UK’s surliest and most unlikely national treasure, is making another film with Nick Love.
They said it wouldn’t happen. They said it couldn’t happen. They definitely thought it shouldn’t happen. But despite everything, here it is: next month, Dyer and Love will start production on a film called Marching Powder.

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we’re talking to UK indie veteran Vertigo Films, producer of hit TV shows Britannia, Bulletproof and James Corden and Sally Hawkins starrer Mammals and feature films Monsters, Bronson and Streetdance 3D. Last year, Federation Entertainment acquired a majority stake in the company and we talk about that deal, Vertigo’s pivot from UK indie film to television and why they’re turning their heads back to the indie film space again.
James Richardson and Allan Niblo remember the exact moment they decided to make the jump from the indie film space into the television sphere. It was at the 2014 American Film Market – one of their busiest markets – when the Vertigo Films co-founders walked into the Loews in Santa Monica...

Is there any corner of the globe left untouched by the British crime drama? If it’s not Kenneth Branagh stalking through the inky expanses of the Swedish winter, or Roger Allam quaffing rosé in Provence, it’s Ralf Little, Ben Miller, Kris Marshall or Ardal O’Hanlon nicking killers (and evading taxes) in Guadeloupe. Now, British crime turns its attention to the Costa del Sol with A Town Called Malice (Sky Max). a pulpy, blood-soaked vision of Brits abroad. “Death arrives on the Costa,” growls the local Spanish detective. “I like it.”
Gene (Jack Rowan) is the youngest of the Lord brothers, heirs-apparent to a south-London crime family. But he’s different, determined to make it as a newspaper journalist. “My family couldn’t lie in bed straight, but that’s not me,” he tells Cindy (Tahirah Sharif), a beautiful bartender. If you love the 1980s – specifically, the neon-lit, Talking Heads-blaring, Delboy swagger of the 1980s Cockney – then Sky’s new crime thriller A Town Called Malice is right up your street.
Meet the Lords
Created by The Sweeney’s Nick Love, this eight-part drama centres on the Lord family, a South London gang whose criminal heyday might be behind them, but who are still up for causing trouble. After a spot of bother with a rival gang (and leaving a policeman for dead), they flee to Spain’s Costa del Sol to lay low, and in amongst the pina coladas and palm trees realise they have a chance to recapture their former glory and become criminal top dogs once more.
The series premiered on Sky Max at 9pm on Thursday 16th March, and the full box-set is already available to watch on Now.

Sky is seeking inspiration from Happy Valley for its next hit show as programs boss Zai Bennett says the pay-tv giant is taking a ‘less is more’ approach to original content.
Speaking at a Broadcasting Press Guild event this morning, Sky Studios Director of Original Drama Meghan Lyvers said conversations are taking place with producers about shows that have “an investigative spine with complicated, dysfunctional, flawed, human and relatable characters at the center,” evoking Happy Valley star Sarah Lancashire’s Catherine Cawood.
She responded “perhaps yes” when questioned if the next big Sky drama could be led by a Cawood-esque figure and talked up the way in which the BBC One/AMC+ sensation places an older woman front and centre of the story. A similar show, the Kate Winslet-starring Mare of Easttown, was launched by Sky and HBO in 2021 to critical acclaim.

Sky Studios has confirmed its commitment to premium content at Mia Market in Rome.
“When we say premium, we talk about mature, provocative, sophisticated storytelling,” said Meghan Lyvers, director of original drama at Sky Studios U.K. Noting the company’s interest in prestige, high-end limited series (“‘Chernobyl’ was an incredible example of that”), “blockbuster” event series, but also ones that can potentially return.
An adaptation of Heather Morris’ novel “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” is in the works, which will see Sky partnering up with Peacock. TNT has acquired “The Lazarus Project,” while crime series “A Town Called Malice,” created by Nick Love and launching next spring, will be a “love letter” to the 1980s.
“We will continue to push forward these ambitious stories,” assured Lyvers.
In Italy, viewers can expect the second season of “Romulus,” shot in proto-Latin, while “Django” with Matthias Schoenaerts as a Wild West gunslinger will premiere internationally on Sunday.

UK sci-fi series Intergalactic will not be coming back for a second season at Sky, Gabriel Silver, Director of Commissioning for Drama, confirmed today.
Speaking at the Edinburgh TV festival, the exec said the company had been “disappointed with audience figures” for the show, which broadcast on Sky One earlier this year.
Intergalactic follows a crew of female convicts who break free and go on the run. It stars Savannah Steyn, Eleanor Tomlinson and Natasha O’Keeffe.
Silver added that the show had turned out to be a “bigger risk than we anticipated”, noting the difficult in finding audiences for “English-accented sci-fis”.
Asked what his team at Sky was looking to commission, the exec said they remain open minded but are “quite well stocked on gangsters and drug dealers”.

Just ahead of its fall season rollout, which launches tonight, the CW is already looking ahead, announcing its 2019 summer programming lineup. It features six original series — one new and five returning — including three acquired dramas, as the CW has renewed all of its summer 2018 series. It is one of the CW’s biggest slates of original shows specifically designated for the off-season. The network has acquired British action drama Bulletproof from Sky Vision and ordered second seasons of legal drama Burden of Truth, starring Kristin Kreuk, and fantasy-adventure series The Outpost. The CW has also ordered new seasons of the hit magic series Penn & Teller: Fool Us and Masters Of Illusion, and the classic improv comedy Whose Line Is It Anyway? all set for premiere in summer 2019. Premiere dates and times will be announced later.
Bulletproof, from Vertigo Films and Company Pictures, follows two undercover cops, Bishop and Pike as they chase down hardened criminals in London’s East End. Pike is an aspirational family man, the son of a decorated police officer who is determined to follow in his father’s footsteps, but not be in his shadow. Meanwhile, Bishop grew up in care homes and on the streets, and never knew his father. Despite these differences Bishop and Pike are bonded by the same moral code and work brilliantly well together even when the chemistry between them looks set to explode.
Allan Niblo Michele Buck Judy Counihan Nick Love Noel Clarke, and Ashley Walters executive produce. The series was co-funded by Sky’s distribution arm, Sky Vision, who control international rights.
Burden Of Truth, starring Kristin Kreuk, is a serialized investigative drama about life-altering legal cases. IFC Films and Entertainment One produces in association with Eagle Vision Inc. with executive producers Ilana Frank, Adam Pettle, Jocelyn Hamilton, Linda Pope and Kristin Kreuk.
Created by Kynan Griffin and Jason Faller, The Outpost, a fantasy-adventure series from Electric Entertainment and Arrowstorm Entertainment, executive producers Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner, follows Talon (Jessica Green), the lone survivor of a race called the “Blackbloods.” In a lawless fortress on the edge of the civilized world, Talon must learn to master her supernatural powers, and ally with a Queen who has been in hiding to defend the world against a fanatical religious dictator. Jake Stormoen, Imogen Waterhouse and Anand Desai-Barochia alsp star.
The Outpost also is executive produced by Electric Entertainment’s team of Marc Roskin and Rachel Olschan-Wilson and by Arrowstorm Entertainment’s team of Jason Faller and Kynan Griffin, the team behind the cult favorite Mythica films. Jennifer Griffin of Arrowstorm Entertainment is also producing.
Penn & Teller: Fool Us is a one-hour competition series celebrating magic and featuring the legendary duo Penn & Teller. Hosted by actress Alyson Hannigan (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), the series is created and executive produced by Penn Jillette, Teller, Peter Adam Golden and Andrew Golder in association with 1/17 Productions and September Films (part of Dcd Media).
Hosted by actor Dean Cain (Supergirl), Masters of Illusion features amazing magic performed by cutting-edge illusionists and escape artists, and performers in each episode displaying skills ranging from perplexing interactive mind magic to hilarious comedy routines. The series hails from Associated Television International with executive producers David McKenzie, Gay Blackstone, David Martin and Al Schwartz, along with co-executive producer Jim Romanovich.
Whose Line Is It Anyway?, based on the hit UK format and hosted by comedian Aisha Tyler, features cast members Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady and Colin Mochrie. Along with a special guest comedian in each episode, the cast members put their comedic skills to the test through a series of spontaneous improv games. Series creators Dan Patterson and Mark Leveson executive produce with Jimmy Mulville, Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady and Colin Mochrie. In Britain we’re finally witnessing, and appreciating, more diversity on screen – and much of that is down to the wave of television series and films that were produced at the turn of the century. The likes of Kildulthood and Bullet Boy were at the forefront of this movement, and can be accredited as being huge forces in the changing face of entertainment in this country – and stars Noel Clarke and Ashley Walters were, and still are, integral to this progression.

Nick Love is to write and direct, with Kris Thykier producing on the UK side, Jeffrey Chan (Bona Film Group) handling the Chinese end and 20th Century Fox also on board. While the original featured wrestling, the remake will have a Mixed Martial Art fighting component.
Further details of the project were revealed by Michael Andreen, senior vice-president 20th Century Fox International, at the Winston Baker Film Finance Forum at Cannes Film Festival today (May 19).
“Given that the nature of the film allowed us to explore the international landscape, we decided to see what would happen to see if we could take the opportunity presented by this picture to develop a picture that starts in Macau,” Andreen explained.

Arms dealers are the bad guys in Ryan Bonder’s respectable crime drama which unfolds to a northern soul soundtrack
An intriguing anomaly: a London-set crime thriller boasting just enough storytelling heft and idiosyncratic style to merit investigation. Writer-director Ryan Bonder takes a borderline preposterous set-up – brooding Canuck Adam (Tygh Runyan) hides out as a Tate cloakroom clerk in a doomed bid to escape his arms-dealing family – then develops it to keep generating fresh perspectives on both the city and his characters. Thematically, it’s more Jacques Audiard than Nick Love: Adam’s relationship with a deaf dancer (Noémie Merlant) echoes Read My Lips (2001), the piano playing 2005’s The Beat That My Heart Skipped. (Again, it’s crime versus culture: we intuit that the brother who shows up is trouble from his brusque handling of Adam’s vinyl collection.) Not every gamble pays off – certain narrative backalleys remain under-illuminated...

Eh, Canada, Nick Love’s twisted superhero flick American Hero is now available on iTunes on our side of the 49th. TwitchFilm has five download codes for five lucky Canadian readers. American Hero stars Stephen Dorff as Melvin, a reluctant hero who is far from super, has been suppressing his telekinetic powers for years with booze, drugs, and women. In the process, he has failed at practically everything, most of all as a parent to his son. After a brush with death, Melvin decides to use his powers for good and clean up the streets of New Orleans with the help of his best friend/definitely-not-a-sidekick, Lucille (Eddie Griffin). For a man who can do the impossible, it might be a fight even he can’t win. So,...

Repackaged and retitled to sound like a spinoff, it makes up for its lack of Winstonian gravity with pace and paper-thin characters
Un peu cheeky, this. After Nick Love’s big-screen Sweeney rehash elicited lukewarm responses in 2012, its producers stuck the script on the Eurostar and saw it remade as something called Antigang. That film has now been repackaged and retitled into what sounds like a franchise-expanding spinoff, yet its Mo is near-identical: blokey – albeit newly subtitled – surveillance-van banter between burly womaniser Jean Reno and sidekick Alban Lenoir (as “Cartier”); much Saab-ad flash applied to careworn maverick cop business; thunderous rounds of ammo passing through paper-thin characterisations. No longer bound by Winstonian gravity, it’s the pacier watch, but these knuckles can only be dragged so far before tiredness sets in.

The gang’s all here: Jean Reno takes on the baddies in The Sweeney: Paris Photo: Unifrance It was one of the finest British TV series of the 1970s. Now The Sweeney receives a French twist from director Benjamin Rocher with Gallic action icon Jean Reno assuming the Ray Winstone role and returning to the fray on the mean streets of Paris.
Orginally titled Antigang in France and then The Squad and now, blatantly, The Sweeney: Paris it is based on the cinema remake by Nick Love made in 2012.
Rocher who made his reputation on horror films La Horde in 2009 and Goal Of The Dead (2014), mixing soccer and zombies, was keen to pay homage to the Die Hard and Lethal Weapon series from the 1980s, which combined elements of comedy with the suspense.
During the Rendez-vous with French Cinema in Paris earlier in the year, Rocher told me: “The producers...

Paramount Music will release the 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi – Music from the Motion Picture digitally on January 15, 2016. The album features the film’s original score by Lorne Balfe (Terminator Genisys, Penguins Of Madagascar).
“The film is really about the soldiers’ ordeal and how they coped with the situation at hand,” said Balfe. “Michael (Bay) does a great job keeping the film from becoming political. The film is really here to honor the soldiers and the men and women who ultimately had to step up and do everything they could to save as many people as possible.”
From director Michael Bay, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi is the gripping true story of six elite ex-military operators assigned to protect the CIA who fought back against overwhelming odds when terrorists attacked a U.S. diplomatic compound on September 11, 2012. When everything went wrong, six men had the courage to do what was right.

Street Wise Hercules: Love’s Homespun Superhero Film Too Conventional for Kicks
No one can deny the super hero is now an immovable staple of Hollywood tent pole filmmaking, having overrun the mainstream market in every conceivable fashion via standalone films, hybrid mash-ups and valiant ensembles. Imperceptibly, these narratives have also infiltrated smaller budgeted endeavors and even independent American cinema, albeit to less substantial effect. British director Nick Love (The Sweeney, 2012), known for a growing filmography built on the type of crime tinged action films once proliferated by Guy Ritchie, makes a curious move overseas with the New Orleans set American Hero, a narrative more interesting than its generic title otherwise suggests. The exploits of a working class man wrapped up in his own downward spiral despite having unexplainable yet extraordinary super powers will have audiences nitpicking its derivative components despite its quality production values and an otherwise persuasive performance from Stephen Dorff.

Lakeshore Records will release the American Hero – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on December 11th and on CD in early 2016. The album features the film’s original score by Lorne Balfe (Terminator: Genisys, Penguins Of Madagascar).
“Any opportunity working with [writer/director] Nick Love is always going to be an interesting adventure,” said Balfe. “Nick might not be academically musical when he describes what he wants but he certainly lives and breathes music. Most of the time I think Nick has the most amazing soundtrack constantly running through his head!”
“The concept for American Hero was simple; a different type of superhero movie – one that you could really believe in – from the story to the casting to the acting to the photography to the editing to the score,” said Love. “For me, what makes Lorne’s score so special is simply that’s it’s so unexpected. "With Great Power Comes Zero Responsibility"
Here's a new superhero movie with a different kind of flavor than you're used to tasting. It's a dark comedy called American Hero, and it stars Stephen Dorff (Blade) as a guy who has telekinetic abilities. Of course, he doesn't use them for anything worthwhile. He's basically just a major screw-up, but after hitting rock bottom, he is looking to change his life and start fighting crime. This actually looks like it could be a fun flick! Here's the synopsis:
Melvin (Stephen Dorff), a reluctant hero who is far from super, has been suppressing his telekinetic powers for years with booze, drugs, and women. In the process, he has failed at practically everything, most of all as a parent to his son. After a brush with death, Melvin decides to use his powers for good and clean up the streets of New Orleans with...

"Melvin is not like other people..." "What you've got is a gift." Screen Media has unleashed a trailer for the dark comedy American Hero, about a guy who has telekinetic abilities, but doesn't use them for much other than to fuel his addiction to drugs and alcohol. After barely surviving one day, he has a change of heart and realizes he has to fight back. Stephen Dorff plays the telekinetic, Melvin, and he seems like perfect casting for this kind of role. Though it's hard not to mention how much this reminds me of that Will Smith movie Hancock, or James Gunn's Super or even Chronicle a bit. This could actually be entertaining after all. Here's the first official trailer for Nick Love's American Hero, in high def on Apple: Melvin (Stephen Dorff), a reluctant hero who is far from super, has been suppressing his telekinetic powers for years with booze,...

We’ve all known someone with a lot of talent who squandered it with self indulgence and self-loathing, but thankfully none of these people have super powers. What would happen if they did? Screen Media Films has acquired the rights to American Hero, director Nick Love’s “anti-superhero” dramedy starring Stephen Dorff that examines the psychological cost of bearing the burden of having super powers. The film follows Melvin (Dorff), a superpowered man who has spent years…...
