“Question not my judgment, Malachai. I am the giver of His word.”
It’s the summer of 1984. The pavement is hot, the corn is high, and the eerie voices of children can be heard singing in a distant barn. Something sinister walks behind the rows. Is it a cult of killer children ripped from the Old Testament? Is a vengeful deity who demands human sacrifice? Is it a roving mound of dirt speeding through the corn or a loud little girl who draws in her sleep? In the latest episode of The Long Watch, The Losers’ Club will pick up their scythes and venture into the fragrant fields to unearth the secrets of Fritz Kiersch’s Children of the Corn.

Stephen King's 1977 short story "Children of the Corn" has been adapted to film an embarrassing number of times. The first adaptation was a 1983 short called "Disciples of the Crow," and it was off to the races. The first feature in the franchise, directed by Fritz Kiersch, hit in 1984 and starred Linda Hamilton and Peter Horton as an innocent city couple who make the mistake of driving through Gatlin, Nebraska, a town that's been taken over by its under-16 population. The kids, following the directions of an off-screen demonic entity they call He Who Walks Behind the Rows, have murdered all the adults and set up their own blood cult. The protagonists run afoul of the kiddie cult and barely escape with their lives intact.
"Children of the Corn" was followed by eight sequels, released from 1993 through 2018. Few of them are good, although the monster design for "Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest...

In Fritz Kiersch's bonkers 1984 horror film "Children of the Corn," the small town of Gatlin, Nebraska is taken over by a gaggle of murderous children. Gatlin's kids have killed the town's grown-ups at the behest of an off-screen deity named He Who Walks Behind the Rows, some kind of harvest-related being that demands death and blood. The kiddie cult is headed by Isaac (John Franklin), a soft-spoken Quaker type who quietly decrees violent action from his flock. Isaac would eventually be betrayed by his gruff lieutenant Malachi (Courtney Gaines) who ties Isaac to a cross. Franklin would reprise his role in 1999 for "Children of the Corn 666: Isaac's Return.
Franklin has had a respectable acting career since his Corny debut, having played multiple voice roles in the '80s, as well as Cousin Itt in 1991's "The Addams Family." Franklin also showed up in the notorious cult film "Tammy and the T-Rex...

Forty-six years after publication, Stephen King’s Children of the Corn has become a B-horror institution. The short story, which first ran in a 1977 issue of Penthouse, follows a bickering couple who run afoul of a murderous cult of corn-worshiping children on a back road in Nebraska. A bleak example of horror in the daylight, the original text plays out like the bastard child of The Wicker Man and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. A 1984 film adaptation adds a sunnier tone while kicking off the story with a brutal massacre in which the children of Gatlin murder their parents. But this jarring tone is not the strangest thing to happen in the corn.
The franchise’s eleven entries are a cinematic cornucopia of ludicrous scenes and sequences. The following is a list of the most bonkers moments in the Children of the Corn series.

Stephen King’s short story “The Children of the Corn” has been catnip to horror filmmakers for nearly fifty years. Originally published in the March 1977 issue of Penthouse, the tale of a quarreling couple who stumble onto a murderous cult of children in a Nebraska cornfield was included the following year in King’s first short story collection Night Shift and subsequently adapted into a 1984 feature film directed by Fritz Kiersch. Night Shift also contains the source material for King classics such as The Mangler, Sometimes They Come Back, Maximum Overdrive, and the upcoming The Boogeyman, but none of the collection’s other 19 stories have had the staying power of “Children of the Corn.” Perhaps due to its evocative title implying barbaric pagan rituals or the eerie juxtaposition between childlike innocence and brutal murder, the original film has spawned eight sequels and two remakes over the course of four decades.

This second attempt at a big-screen adaptation of Stephen King’s dark tale of a family pet rising from the dead mixes things up to chilling effect
Stephen King once described his output as “the literary equivalent of a Big Mac” – nothing fancy, but it feeds the needs of the audience. While many of King’s early novels (up until 1987’s self-reflexive Misery) fulfilled that reliable fast-food remit, screen adaptations of the horror maestro’s work proved far more varied, ranging from such upmarket cordon bleu dishes as Brian De Palma’s Carrie, David Cronenberg’s The Dead Zone and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (which famously incurred the author’s ire), all the way down to dog’s dinners such as Fritz Kiersch’s Children of the Corn and Mark L Lester’s Firestarter, the last of which King called “flavourless…like cafeteria mashed potatoes”.

Stephen King films can be a mixed bag. For every really good film adaptation (Carrie; The Shining; Misery) there’s a bad one (Maximum Overdrive; Graveyard Shift; The Dark Tower). There are also a whole slew of Stephen King films that fall somewhere in the middle. I think Children of the Corn is one of the films that falls squarely in the middle of the pack.
There are some real strengths in the film. It has some genuine star quality, with soon-to-be action star Linda Hamilton (The Terminator) and TV heartthrob Peter Horton (Thirtysomething) starring as married couple Burt and Vicky, who become stranded in a town filled only with murderous, brainwashed children. The children are led by Isaac (John Franklin), who has a direct connection with an evil entity the children worship called He Who Walks Behind the Rows, and Malachai (Courtney Gains), Isaac’s mean-spirited enforcer.

Three years later, Vicky (Linda Hamilton) and boyfriend Burt (Peter Horton) are driving near Gatlin when a little boy stumbles in front of their car. Happy Halloween Outlanders! I hope everyone had a great time on the one night of the year when we can be anyone, or any "Thing", that we want to be! Sorry for the late posting but things have been very busy in the cornfields this past week. Well, for this season of shocks and scares, did everyone dress up as their favorite horror icon? Who did you pick? Was it Crystal Lake's most popular camper Jason Vorhees, Springwood's nightmarish Elm Street resident Freddy Krueger, or was it a cornfield favorite from the nicest little town in Nebraska? As you know, we would choose the latter as the people of Gatlin hold a special place in our hearts. So when some of the most fantastic Children of the Corn-inspired photos we had ever seen came to us recently, we just had to post them for the corn fans to see!

Popular in the 1960s and early 1970s with more rare appearances in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s, the anthology-style horror film has made a solid resurgence in recent years with such portmanteau releases as The ABCs of Death films and the V/H/S series.
With Mexico Barbaro, Fear Paris and other projects in various stages of completion, the anthology horror film looks to continue to be an important part of the horror cinema landscape.
Some anthology films employ a framing or wraparound sequence in an attempt to connect the segments that make up the film while others dispense with this classic Amicus-style approach entirely and simply present a collection of short films connected by genre.
Either way, a horror anthology film is ultimately about the quality of its individual segments and this article will take you on a tour of the greatest horror anthology segments of all time.

Terrorizing tykes. Corruptible kids. Menacing mop-tops. Problematic pubescent. However one might want to use their alliterative labeling when it comes to troubled young people and the trauma they cause (or the trauma that gravitates to them) in the world of cinema it is always fascinating to see the suspense, aggravation and psychological ramifications behind such happenings.

Unsolved is a feature-length horror film produced by students in Oklahoma City University’s Moving Image Arts Program. Touting itself as one of the only student-produced feature-length films in the country, one has to respect the ambition of the cast and crew involved in the production, as well as that of program director Fritz Kiersch, best known for directing the original Children of the Corn (1984). As someone who attended Nyu’s film program and was frustrated by every single student’s unflappable view that they were a genius auteur, and the lack of cooperative collaboration that resulted, I admire that the students in the Ocu program were able to all unite and take on various roles, big and small, to finish the film, submit it to festivals and release it on DVD. However, what makes Unsolved admirable doesn’t necessarily make it a good movie.

This past June I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Fritz Kiersch (Director of Children of the Corn) at the deadCENTER Film Festival in Oklahoma City following a screening of the film PressPausePlay. Our task was to discuss the questions posed in the film which is explores the digital revolution of the last decade and its influence on the creative culture.
The film puts forth the notion, as described on the PressPausePlay site, that this “digital revolution has unleashed creativity and talent of people in an unprecedented way, in turn unleashing unlimited creative opportunities,” and ponders these fundamental questions, “does democratized culture mean better art, film, music and literature or is true talent instead flooded and drowned in the vast digital ocean of mass culture? Is it cultural democracy or mediocrity?”
While the mediocrity of it all is fairly obvious any time you open up a browser, these...

2009. It was pretty much as crappy a year for horror movies as it was for the economy. There were, however, some really high points to help balance out all the drivel that was put out there in theatres as well as on home video, and they are to be celebrated, even though technically a couple of them are not even from this year.

It was 1984. Ronald Reagan was president, Van Halen made us "Jump", and we made our way into theaters to witness a small town in Nebraska overrun by a religious leader and his group of community children followers. That movie was, of course, Stephen King's Children of the Corn. And as this year marks the twenty-five year anniversary that this milestone in horror was released, we wondered "What was it like on the set for the Iowa-extras that rounded out the children population of Gatlin?" So after much searching through the cornfields and tracking them down, we were pleased to get in touch recently with Russ Roach who played one of the Gatlin-natives led by Isaac. So Outlanders, here it is. After months of planning we give you, the fans, "The Children of Gatlin" - 25 Years Later.

Another day, another remake. According to Variety and the still-surviving Weinstein Company, Stephen King's classic short story Children of the Corn is set to be re-imagined and brought to the screen yet again. Previously seen in the 1984 film, directed by Fritz Kiersch, the book tells the story of a boy preacher who persuades the children in a small Nebraska town to kill all of the adults. Tapped to transform King's prose to script is Ehren Kruger, who is unfortunately co-responsible for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen most recently. Yikes, I know. More horror reboots? Couldn't this classic just stay a classic forever? "We felt the [original] film was a missed opportunity," said Bob Weinstein. "If you read the short story, it's got such a strong feeling to it and there's this religious overtone to it as well. Ehren wants to hit it hard. It's popular in Hollywood to say you...

Just months before Linda Hamilton battled The Terminator in 1984, she fought for her life against the Children Of The Corn, led by Isaac (John Franklin), one of the genre’s creepiest kids ever. Children is one of over 50 adaptations of Stephen King stories to have been released over the years, and it remains a cult favorite. It has spawned six sequels (including Isaac’S Return) and been given the remake treatment (please, Hollywood, stop!) by one of the original’s producers, Donald P. Borchers, for a forthcoming Syfy TV premiere—and now it’s back on an Anchor Bay Blu-ray, which will first be available exclusively at Best Buy June 30 ahead of its general release August 25.

After a few days of bad weather in Iowa, we finally got onto the set of the Donald Borcher directed Children of the Corn. Now, we must warn you that quite a few plot details will be revealed and will spoil it for anyone who hasn't read Stephen King's short story. Let the spoilers begin!
Our set visit took place during the filming of a flashback sequence in the corn fields. David Anders, as the role of Burt, is a Vietnam vet and suffers from a very realistic nightmare from the war. The trip is so bad that he accidentally kills one of the towns children, Nahum (played by Paul Butler on the right). If you scroll down to the bottom you can see the make-up effects done by our buds from Precinct 13 Entertainment.
