In the 1930s, Universal laid claim to the two biggest horror stars of the era, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, and it was only a matter of time before the pair would meet on screen. In 1932, only months after each rocketed to stardom in Dracula and Frankenstein respectively, the two were dressed in tuxedoes and brought together for a genial photoshoot that simultaneously announced their partnership and implied a rivalry. Through a series of circumstances, it was another two years before the pair would star in a film together. As one might expect, it was in the most transgressive horror film of the era, 1934’s The Black Cat, a film that remains shocking not only for the early 1930s but even more surprising as a product overseen by the newly enforced Hays Code.
The Code had been established in 1927 as a self-censoring wing of the motion picture industry and an attempt to avoid government censorship.

There’s a telling moment at the dénouement of Thomas Hamilton’s and Ron MacCloskey’s affectionate documentary Boris Karloff: The Man behind the Monster. Sara Karloff, the now eighty-two year old daughter of the beloved actor, opines that her father’s lasting cinematic legacy is due, in part, to the tenaciousness of his devoted fan base. It’s a demographic that we soon discover consists of a number of amazingly creative people: folks whose loyalty to and enthusiasm for Karloff’s work has not wavered over the decades. Sara’s contention is inarguably true. As this ninety-nine minute Voltage Films/Abramorama documentary (presented by Shout! Studios) unspools – crisply narrated by Paul Ryan and featuring commentary by preeminent Karloff scholar and “Biographical Consultant” Stephen Jacobs - we discover the actor’s admirer’s bridge several generations of fans and filmmakers.

Boris Karloff: The Man Behind The Monster is a gloriously enjoyable retrospective of the legendary actor, who is forever tied to the horror genre and the monster role of Frankenstein’s monster, which first brought him fame. The film, directed by Thomas Hamilton, is thoroughly enjoyable but, despite its subtitle, it is less a personal biography than a review of this career, with an emphasis on how his work influenced future filmmakers and the horror genre. Karloff fans and serious film history buffs will find little that was not already known about the man but it is a wonderful introduction and retrospective on Boris Karloff.

Straightforward to a fault, Boris Karloff: The Man Behind the Monster crystallizes the horror icon’s enduring legacy. From his complicated childhood to late-career resurrection, director Thomas Hamilton assembles an impressive crew of talking heads to dive into the brilliance of the man born William Henry Pratt in England.
Narrated by Paul Ryan (sporting a voice worthy of the film’s subject matter), this documentary does as promised. Hamilton wisely puts the history of Karloff’s star-making roles in Universal’s Frankenstein and The Mummy at the top of the picture, then digs into his origins. A rough upbringing included a father who was a “devil of a man,” an Anglo-Indian ancestry that was met with prejudiced ridicule by his peers, and an accident between his brother and neighbor that ended in tragedy. Early on, Karloff was looking for a means of escape. Eventually, he found it in performance.

It’s a genuine Universal horror classic that to my knowledge has never been available in a decent presentation — but The Cohen Group has come through with a nigh-perfect Blu-ray, both image and sound. Karloff is creepy, Gloria Stuart lovely and Ernest Thesiger is at his most delightfully fruity. And the potato lobby should be pleased, too.
The Old Dark House (1932)
Blu-ray
The Cohen Group
1932 / B&W / 1:37 flat full frame / 72 min. / Street Date October 24, 2017 / 25.99
Starring: Boris Karloff, Melvyn Douglas, Charles Laughton, Lilian Bond, Ernest Thesiger, Rebecca Femm, Raymond Massey, Gloria Stuart, John (actually Elspeth) Dudgeon, Brember Wills.
Cinematography: Arthur Edeson
Film Editor: Clarence Kolster
Special Makeup: Jack Pierce
Written by Benn W. Levy, from the novel by J. B. Priestley
Produced by Carl Laemmle Jr.

I suppose fans of horror films will forever hope that some pristine copy of the lost 1927 London After Midnight will someday appear.

Behind every ghoulish, nightmarish creature brought to life on the silver screen, there are stories that blur the line between history and myth. In this grey area of human history, we are forced to question the limitations of man and contemplate the possibility of the impossible. Two such stories are explored in the History Channel’s double feature DVD release of Frankenstein: The Real Story and The Real Wolfman.
The Real Wolfman (2009) follows a two man investigation team who’ve traveled to France to search for the truth behind the accounts of the fabled “Beast of Gevaudan.” The first half of this unlikely pair of investigators is a cynical, retired New Jersey cop of 25 years. He plans to use modern criminal analysis to prove it was a flesh and blood human behind 102 killings in the summer of 1764. His partner is an experienced crypto-zoologist whose deep knowledge of...

Over at my other haunt, Sergio Leone and the Infield Fly Rule, there is currently posted, in honor of Halloween week, what I think are two very special treats (and possibly tricks). The first is a very challenging frame grab quiz in which readers are asked to guess the titles of 31 movies based on eerie images that may or may not be so easy to identify. The other is a special edition of the traditional interview-type quiz I occasionally come up devoted entirely to the harrowing world of horror. It features the usual batch of questions for which there are no wrong answers, only your answers, which makes it much more fun to fill out and especially to read. As usual, it’s taking me a while to get around to submitting my own answers to the quiz, but in the creeping shadow of the approaching holiday I thought I...

Art is a subjective passion. What is art to one person can be nothing other than tin cans glued together on a backboard to another. Whatever your taste in art, there is simply no denying if a particular artist has a unique and special gift. Robert Aragon has such a gift. An artist who spans several genres, from horror to portraiture and various genres in between, Robert is an artist of many talents. For the past two decades he has been a top force in the horror art genre. Whether creating comic book and CD covers or portraits for the likes of Sara Karloff or Bela Lugosi Jr. Robert infuses a sense of pathos in every piece he creates.

Science Fiction and Horror is the backbone of Famous Monsters. However, without the steadfast passion of fans these modern mythologies and the people behind them would have been long forgotten. After all, it was the very passion of Forrest J. Ackerman that allowed generations of fans to come together and share their own stories and passions about the various genres that make up the world FM inhabits.
One such storyteller is artist Robert Aragon, who for over twenty years has been creating and adding to the rich tradition of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror. Now, Robert’s wonderful artwork comes together for the first time to create a card set that involves all of the silver screen favorites. The base set includes 72 cards. Collectors will find autograph cards from Bela Lugosi, Jr., Julie Adams, Sara Karloff, Carla Laemmle, George Clayton Johnson, Jane Adams and many more. Cut signatures from Vincent Price...

One year ago - almost to the day - I was in Toronto, trying to believe that 40 degrees was “unseasonably warm,” as the locals informed me. But I was there for an actual reason: to visit the set of Mama, the first feature from director Andy Muschetti, based off his short film. Mama is produced by genre luminary Guillermo del Toro. Not content to just throw money at the project, del Toro was deeply involved in every aspect of the film, stopping by the set almost every day. This was possible because del Toro was already camped out at Toronto’s Pinewood Studios, working on his monsters vs. robots epic Pacific Rim. Being a gracious producer, del Toro “allowed” Muschetti a sound stage - while Pacific Rim occupied the rest of the entire studio.

“There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.” – The Twilight Zone first season opening narration

One of my favorite parts of living in New York was the ability to chow down at the famed Jekyll and Hyde restaurant. Sure the food sucks, but that's not what you go there for. It's all about atmosphere and I can't think of anywhere else you could get into a conversation with a haunted moose head over chicken fingers.
That is until now. According to the Press of Atlantic City developers in Atlantic City are working hard to create the Hollywood Horror Cafe, a horror-themed restaurant and wax museum, and they're doing so with some well acquainted figures of the genre.

Bela Lugosi Jr., a California attorney and son of one of the best-known horror actors in the genre's history, has provided legal assistance for the development group.

This being Famous Monsters of Filmland, one assumes that you, dear reader, are a classic horror fan. If that is indeed the case, then certainly you’ve heard of The Drunken Severed Head. One of the most entertaining, dedicated and spirited blogs out there (and there’s more than a few!), Tdsh – as it’s affectionately known – provides daily thoughts (from random observations to wonderfully insightful analysis), original content and commentary about everything classic horror, and was honored this month with a coveted Rondo Hatton Award for Best Blog of 2009.
Famous Monsters was lucky enough to chat with the creator and writer of The Drunken Severed Head, Max Cheney, to gather some insight into the origins and workings of Tdsh, as well as what motivates a fan to contribute to the classic horror community at large.
