Exclusive: Mozhan Navabi (The Blacklist) has been cast in the Netflix limited series Zero Day in a recurring role portraying Melissa Kornblau.
From creators and executive producers Eric Newman (Narcos), Noah Oppenheim (Jackie) and Michael Schmidt, Zero Day asks the question: How do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control? And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our imagining?
At the center of the narrative is Mullen (Robert De Niro), a popular but complicated figure who is yanked back from retirement to head up a commission investigating a global cyberattack.
The show also stars Angela Bassett, Dan Stevens, Matthew Modine, Bill Camp, McKinley Belcher III, Gaby Hoffman, Clark Gregg, Mark Ivanir, Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen and Connie Britton.

Netflix tries muscling in on the Mission: Impossible game with the adrenaline-charged spy thriller Heart of Stone, built as a vehicle for Gal Gadot (one of the producers) to swap superheroics for a more earthbound combo of brains, tech savvy, instinct and formidable fight skills. While it’s a few notches up from the Wonder Woman star’s last action romp for the streamer, Red Notice, it feels only marginally less manufactured from the spare parts of other movies. But it gets the job done and is sure to pull solid numbers. It doesn’t hurt that Gadot has appealing chemistry with co-star Jamie Dornan.
The timing seems mildly unfortunate given that the most recent M:i installment, Dead Reckoning, hit theaters only a month ago and also revolves around a risibly named AI mega-brain, “The Entity,” which nefarious forces are angling to control.

In Leni Lauritsch’s gritty sci-fi thriller “Rubikon,” the final frontier could well be humankind’s last refuge.
The film, which stars Julia Franz Richter, Georg Blagden (“Versailles”) and Mark Ivanir, screens in the Zurich Film Festival’s Focus Competition.
Set in a dark future in which a polluted and barely sustainable Earth is plagued by corporate armies battling for depleting resources as the wealthy live in air domes that protect them from the contaminated atmosphere, the story centers on three astronauts aboard the space station Rubikon, where scientists have developed a possible means of survival, a sustainable algae project to provide oxygen and food.
When a mysterious and highly toxic fog begins to envelop the planet, the crew has to decide whether to risk their lives and return to Earth in an effort to rescue survivors or remain safe aboard the self-sufficient station.

A toxic cloud of pollution has swallowed the earth, killing untold numbers. The world’s nations have dissolved, with all power now in the hands of giant corporations. The rich retreat to sealed biodomes while the poor choke and starve. On the space station Rubikon, Hannah (Julia Franz Richter), Gavin (George Blagden), and Dimitri (Mark Ivanir) weigh the fate of the planet’s survivors. Should these crewmembers risk their own lives on a rescue mission to the surface, or ignore the old world to build a new one of safety and solitude, living off the station’s sophisticated algae symbiosis system? Against the vast canvas of the cosmos, three people with different worldviews debate their moral responsibility to the species, all while grappling with the timely agony of isolation.
Rubikon is a low-budget film, but what money it did get was well-spent.

Survivors of an environmental catastrophe battle to save Planet Earth from a space station in this tense drama
Although set in the nearish future in space, this multilingual sci-fi film feels quite of the moment, imbued with guilt and angst about environmental catastrophe, but also suffused with a sense of helplessness. It’s 2056 and, after the collapse of the world’s ecosystem, rich people live in air domes that keep them safe from the contaminated atmosphere. Attempts to find a safe place to live off the planet have failed, as anyone sensible could have told us they would do. On the Rubikon, the last space station, they are working on experiments with algae that might present a solution to the problems down below.
However, members of the station’s small skeleton crew, led by German-born Captain Hannah Wagner (Julia Franz Richter), seem to have competing private agendas. Eventually, everything goes...

IFC Midnight has taken North American rights to Magdalena Lauritsch’s sci-fi disaster movie, Rubikon. A theatrical and PVOD date will be set for this year.
In the film, the crew of a space station, Hannah (Julia Franz Richter), Gavin (George Blagden) and Dimitri (Mark Ivanir) must decide whether they risk their lives to get back home during a global catastrophe and search for survivors or stay safe in the sophisticated station’s algae symbiosis system, which makes them fully self-reliant. Rubikon questions whether we have the right to seal ourselves off in safety and ignorance from the ongoing problems of the world, as three people with three very different worldviews collide in this pressure-cooker environment millions of miles away.
The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films’ Manager of Acquisitions Adam Koehler with The Playmaker Munich’s Deputy Head of Sales & Acquisitions Moritz Hemminger on behalf of the filmmakers.

The Playmaker Munich has released the first teaser for upcoming sci-fi movie “Rubikon,” which is one of seven international genre projects selected for this year’s Frontières Buyers Showcase, which is running during the Cannes Film Festival.
“Rubikon,” directed by Magdalena Lauritsch and written by Jessica Lind and Lauritsch, is in post-production. Johannes Mücke, a longtime collaborator of Roland Emmerich, is responsible for the production design.
In the film, following a catastrophe on Earth, the planet is covered in a mysterious toxic fog. The crew of the space station known as Rubikon – Hannah (Julia Franz Richter), Gavin (George Blagden) and Dimitri (Mark Ivanir) – must decide whether to risk their lives to get home and search for survivors, or stay safe in the sophisticated station’s “algae symbiosis system,” which makes them fully self-sufficient.

"You feel this sour smell? It's the dough starting to rise... Nothing can stop it now." ShineHouse Group has debuted an official US trailer for an indie drama titled Esau an Israeli drama made by a Russian filmmaker. This originally premiered at the Shanghai Film Festival last year, and arrives on VOD in the US this month. A 40-year-old writer returns home to his family house where he was raised and that he escaped after half a lifetime - to face his brother who stayed instead, inherited their family bakery and married the woman who they both loved. The film stars Harvey Keitel, Lior Ashkenazi, Mark Ivanir, and Shira Haas. The cinematography is a bit basic, but the film seems to have a lot of heart and a lot of authentic emotion worked into it. Not only a story about going home and family, but also the struggles of love and following your heart.

Hilary Swank, who starred in Netflix’s sci-fi drama “Away” earlier in the year, reminisced about the show in an Instagram post on Tuesday following its cancellation by Netflix.
“Love and hope will always remain my ‘North Star.’ It was an incredible journey my compadres,” Swank said on Instagram. “And thank you to all my extraordinary followers who watched and supported our beautiful show. Wish we were showing you Mars. Until the next one.”
Swank starred in the series as Emma Green, a NASA astronaut who led the first astronaut expedition to Mars. The show also starred Josh Charles, Vivian Wu, and Mark Ivanir, among others.
“Away” premiered on Netflix on September 4. The show received mixed reviews from critics, including IndieWire’s Ben Travers, who, despite praising its polished look, referred to “Away” as a “stock family drama” that failed to capitalize on its sci-fi elements in his grade C review.

The Away mission has been grounded. Netflix has cancelled the astronaut drama series so, there won't be a second season. The show stars Hilary Swank, Josh Charles, Talitha Bateman, Vivan Wu, Mark Ivanir, Ato Essandoh, and Ray Panthaki.
Created by Andrew Hinderaker, Away is set in the near future and revolves around a manned spacecraft being sent to Mars. For the high-stakes mission, a crew of elite astronauts is assembled from around the globe, coming from the United States, Russia, China, India, and Great Britain. If the mission goes as planned, they'll be away from their home and loved ones for three years. During this time, their relationships both on Earth and in space will be tested, as they struggle to stay alive and stay on track in pursuit of humanity's most important goal.

The Joint Mars Initiative surely wasn't expecting this hiccup. Deadline first reported that Netflix has given the boot to Hilary Swank's Away, a space mission drama that just premiered on Sept. 4 and earned pretty decent viewership after spending a few weeks in the top 10 of Nielsen's streaming rankings. The Oscar winner played Emma Green, an American astronaut who says goodbye to her husband (Josh Charles) and daughter (Talitha Bateman) for a three-year trip to Mars that doesn't come without complications. Main cast members across the first 10 episodes also included Vivian Wu, Mark Ivanir, Ato Essandoh and Ray Panthaki. Following the news, Swank took to Instagram to thank her fans for watching....

Away has been promptly grounded by Netflix after just one season, coldly cutting short Hilary Swank’s onscreen mission to Mars.
Netflix’s cancelation of Away, confirmed by the major trades, arrives less than two months after the 10-episode season hit the platform back on September 4. While the series was purportedly generating high viewership, and spent several weeks on Nielsen’s recently introduced streaming top 10 ranking (on which it peaked at #2), the reason for the cancelation—and its abruptness—has been attributed to being on the wrong side of cost vs. audience analyses.
Nevertheless, Away has become the latest high-profile casualty of ongoing cost-cutting measures implemented by Netflix. While said measures may have commenced before the pandemic in the face of an evolving bottom line, they have certainly increased with efficiency due to the resulting production obstacles. Indeed, the series now joins a list of recent cancelations such as celebrated...

Netflix's Away won't be taking off for another adventure. On Oct. 20, Deadline reported that the series starring Hilary Swank has been canceled after only one season. It's unclear why Netflix decided to cancel the show, especially after it received positive reviews from fans and critics alike. It even spent time in the top 10 titles on Netflix.
The series brings space exploration a little closer to home as viewers follow Emma Green (Swank) and her international crew - Ram (Ray Panthaki), Lu (Vivian Wu), Misha (Mark Ivanir), and Kwesi (Ato Essandoh) - on a Mars expedition. As they navigate the challenges of their journey, they must also deal with the repercussions on their loved ones back home.

Away will not be taking flight at Netflix again.
The streamer has canceled the Hilary Swank-led space drama after a single season, Deadline reports.
The series seemed to be a popular option for the streaming, regularly appearing in its top 10 in the U.S.
It also spent several weeks in the top 10 Nielsen streaming viewership rankings, so the decision to end the series is a bit of a shocker.
Then again, Netflix also canceled a top 10 series in Teenage Bounty Hunters, so the lines between hits and misses for the streamer continue to blur.
The series followed the first crewed expedition to Mars, the Mars Joint Initiative.
It features an international crew: a Chinese chemist, a world-leading British botanist with no previous experience in space, a Russian cosmonaut with the most experience in space, an Indian medical officer who is second in command, and American commander Emma Green. Emma's...

It looks like we won’t be finding out what happened after the crew finally landed on Mars. A month and a half after it premiered, Netflix has canceled “Away,” the science fiction drama led by Hilary Swank.
“Away” had very good ratings upon launch, according to Nielsen, debuting at No. 6 after a Sept. 4 premiere, and subsequently spent several weeks in the top 10 of streaming shows. But Netflix weighs viewing versus cost when making decisions about renewals or cancellations, according to individuals with knowledge of the situation, and focuses on full-season orders to any show it greenlights.
Another factor may be the potential cost of shooting a second season under pandemic protocols, something that has led to cancellations and reversed renewals for other series this year.

How much quirk is too much quirk? That question is one that everyone has to answer for themselves. That being said, there’s always a point at which things go over the top and a film stops being enjoyable. Some can stand more than others. I, for example, really have very little that’s “too quirky” for me. Then came Kajillionaire, which is so specific in its quirk and approach, that I struggled to get on board with it. Now, the acting is strong, the visuals are interesting, and the ending is absolutely wonderful. At the same time, I didn’t fall in love with it like most did. Opening this weekend, it demands to be seen, though the reception may well be mixed. The movie is a quirky dramedy, operating on its own very specific and sometimes even bizarre wavelength. Husband and wife con artists Robert (Richard Jenkins) and...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on September 24th, 2020, reviewing the new live action film “Kajillionaire,” a new film by quirky writer/director Miranda July.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
The film features an unrecognizable Evan Rachel Wood as Old Dolio, daughter of street hustlers Robert and Theresa (Richard Jenkins and Debra Winter). The trio live hand to mouth by essentially doing small con jobs. When a stranger named Melanie (Gina Rodriguez) comes into their lives, the dynamic of the street crew is never the same. This is a meditation on the philosophy of relationships, parent-to-child and friend-to-friend, and what those relationships mean when survival is the main goal. In theaters on September 25th, and Video-On-Demand October 16th.

The production team behind Netflix’s Away couldn’t possibly have known while they were making the show that it would release in the middle of a global pandemic, at a time when much of the world would be as isolated as any astronaut on a long journey. But sometimes, stories arrive precisely when people most need to hear them, and this heartfelt tale about the power of science and human connection feels right on time.
Away follows the aspirational story of the first manned trip to Mars on a spaceship called the Atlas, staffed by a diverse international crew from a variety of backgrounds. And though their eighteen-month journey to the Red Planet is full of conflict and life-threatening space crises, it’s the small gestures of kindness, patience, and trust that ultimately build bonds between them. After all, they’re literally all they’ve got.

Netflix’s “Away” ends Season 1 on a pretty hopeful and triumphant note: the five astronauts make it to Mars in one piece. But when we see that shot of the first foot making an imprint on that red Martian sand, it’s hard to tell who’s foot it is.
The next thing we see is Misha Popov (Mark Ivanir) talking to Dr. Lu Wang (Vivian Wu), and it seems like he’s walked a little bit farther than her, which would indicate that he might have been the first man on Mars. But it’s hard to say for sure, based on what we’re shown, who was really the first to take that famous step — so we asked showrunner Jessica Goldberg to clear things up for us.

There’s something elemental about the desire to look to the stars, to imagine oneself as well as, perhaps, all humanity, finding a future beyond the planet we once called home. This innate desire to explore and discover is, indeed, so deeply encoded that it presents a trap for artists — it can too easily be traded on for an easy emotional charge without other, necessary storytelling work having been done.
That’s, unfortunately, the case with “Away,” Netflix’s new drama series starring Hilary Swank as the astronaut leading an international expedition to Mars. Created by Andrew Hinderaker and boasting executive producers including Jessica Goldberg, Jason Katims, and Matt Reeves, the series has all the markers of a prestige consideration of what it means for humanity to take flight, but leans so heavily on inspirational tropes of the genre that it never, itself, soars.
