Onetime Megadeth drummer Lee Rauch, who played on one of the band’s early demos, died on Friday (June 23rd). He was 58 years old.
The news of Rauch’s passing was shared on Facebook by his brother Chris. A cause for Lee’s death has yet to be revealed. The post read:
“Today is a very sad day, we lost my brother William Lee Rauch.
Lee was a very strong man of faith so I know he is with God now. He was an Awesome drummer, who helped launch one of the biggest metal names in history by being the first drummer for Megadeth, playing along side Dave Mustaine, Kerry King and David Ellifson. His heart was set on making it big and came very close numerous times.”

Megadeth have settled a copyright lawsuit stemming from the artwork for their latest album, The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!.
Back in February, New York-based illustrator Brent Elliott White sued the band, claiming that hundreds of hours of work had gone unpaid and that he still owned the copyright to the art featuring Megadeth’s iconic mascot Vic Rattlehead.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, both parties filed a joint notice of settlement last Thursday (May 11th), informing the court that they had “reached an agreement in principle for the resolution of this action.” A stipulation of dismissal is expected to be filed within 30 days, and “the matter has been resolved amicably,” per White’s attorney Matthew Cave.
White, who has also created art for Trivium and Death Angel, among others, was initially contacted to work on the Megadeth sleeve in early 2020, but no written contract was signed at that time.

David Ellefson continues to reflect on his removal from Megadeth in interviews, and now he’s taken a direct hit at his former bandmate Dave Mustaine.
After all, Mustaine is familiar with getting unceremoniously booted from a band. He was put on a bus and sent home in April 1983, right before Metallica were set to record their debut album in New York City — arguably the most infamous heavy metal ousting of all-time.
Speaking with Brazil’s Heavy Talk, Ellefson took to comparing his no-questions-asked dismissal from Megadeth to Mustaine’s Metallica saga… or at least their respective reactions to being fired.
“I got one call: ‘You’re fired,'” said Ellefson [as transcribed by Blabbermouth] of the moment he was axed from Megadeth following a compromising online sex encounter that was made public. “And I said, ‘What the fuck, man?’ I said, ‘Some shitty fucking people just dropped a bomb on my house. And that’s it?...

With each subsequent interview, ex-Megadeth bassist David Ellefson opens up a little bit more about his unceremonious removal from the band in 2021 following a highly publicized online sexual encounter.
Speaking with Spanish site The Metal Circus, Ellefson let it all out in a tell-all interview that hit on his exit from Megadeth, the aforementioned sexual incident, and Ellefson’s current musical endeavors — which even includes playing Megadeth covers in his Kings of Thrash project.
Ellefson said he didn’t choose to leave Megadeth and is “clearly not mad about the past.” He still considers himself an “ambassador” for the group due to his lengthy history as its bassist.
“I think I’m being very respectful toward it despite how my dismissal was handled,” he said [as transcribed by Blabbermouth]. “I think I’ve gone above and beyond being respectful.”

Dieth, the new death metal band featuring ex-Megadeth bassist David Ellefson, have announced their debut album, To Hell and Back. The title track is available now ahead of the June 2nd release date.
Ellefson formed Dieth with ex-Entombed A.D. guitarist/vocalist Guilherme Miranda and drummer Michał Łysejko (ex-Decapitated) last year, and the unit’s death/thrash pedigree shines through on “To Hell and Back.” Miranda and Łysejko bring the extreme tendencies of their former bands — over-the-top guttaral vocals and technical rhythms, respectively — while Ellefson anchors the low-end as he so often did in Megadeth.
“‘To Hell and Back’ is the song that best describes our individual and collective journeys as professional musicians,” commented Miranda in a press statement. “For an album to connect with the listener, it has to have deep meaning, and this wraps up this whole moment for us. We’ve been to Hell — and we’re Back!

Bob Nalbandian, whose journalism and film career chronicled the ups and downs of the heavy metal scene in print, film and online, died Friday, December 30 in Redding, California at age 58.
Nalbandian was recently diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma, an aggressive, rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, according to a cousin.
Nalbandian began his career in his teen years as the publisher/editor in chief of the heavy metal fanzine The Headbanger in April of 1982. The ‘zine achieved national distribution and was among the first publications to profile the then-unsigned bands Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Armored Saint.
He became a regular contributor to music magazines covering the rising metal scene in California, then parlayed that into a stint working in publicity and promotion for Roadrunner Records, where he handled the efforts backing Sepultura and Type O Negative. He moved on from there to the Rhino/Wea distributed Bizarre/Straight Records.

After nearly 40 years of thrashing, Megadeth show no signs of slowing down with their new speed-metal single “Soldier On!,” the latest track off the heavy metal band’s upcoming LP The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead!
Dave Mustaine said of the new track in a statement, “Coming to the realization that you need to walk away from a relationship that’s very toxic, and how hard it can be to start down that road. But you know you need to, and just taking that first step is the hardest part.

He added, “Look, life is… You’re never on top all the time.

When Dave Mustaine looks back on making Countdown to Extinction, the 1992 album that propelled Megadeth into the mainstream, he’s thankful for his clarity of mind at the time. After years of alcohol and drug abuse, the eternally redheaded singer, guitarist, and songwriter had gotten sober before the making of the group’s previous album — the 1990 thrash masterpiece Rust in Peace — and that new state led to him exploring more of a simplified and streamlined approach to speed metal on Countdown singles like “Symphony of Destruction” and “Sweating Bullets.”

The upcoming book Queen: Album By Album will make a perfect listening companion to Queen's 45th Anniversary.
Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar make Queen's operatic, six-minute epic “Bohemian Rhapsody” look so easy in the opening scene of comedy Wayne’s World, it could be sung off-the-cuff in an AMC Pacer. But it took the band three weeks to record the song at Trident studio in 1975. It took them twelve hours just to record 180 vocal overdubs, besides the piano, bass, guitars, drums and that elegantly massive Chinese gong at the end. Heavy-metal journalist Martin Popoff's upcoming book Queen: Album By Album, which comes out next month as part of Voyageur Press’s Album by Album series, details all the studio tricks the band employed. The book will arrive just in time for the 45th anniversary of their first album and the upcoming feature biopic.

Chicago – Watching a heavy metal band perform during daylight can be a little like watching a horror film with the lights on. The overall performance can sometimes lose a bit of its edge and intensity.
Fortunately that was not the case when the main acts took the stage for the “Chicago Open Air” concert at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill. Download Festival has decided to rename the main stage of the festival in memory of Lemmy from Motorhead, who passed away from cancer just before the New Year.
With the band due to play on the Friday night of the rock festival at Donington Park, it has been thought that a suitable tribute will stand in their place, in memory of Lemmy. After introducing 36 bands to the entire line up, the three main acts headlining the main stage, now formally known as ‘The Lemmy Stage’, will be Black Sabbath, Rammstein and Iron Maiden.
To continue the support and remembrance of Lemmy, the line-up poster shows further support as Motorhead’s name has been replaced with a drawing of the black cavalry hat that bore the ‘Death or Glory’ insignia, which Lemmy would wear to each of his performances.

Supergroup compilations can be hit and miss, and although many metal fans in 2015 like to lambaste anyone who isn’t pushing the envelope as far as possible, that can make it far too easy to forget how enjoyable the most base staples of the genre can truly be.
Blisteringly-fast guitar solos, a solid mix of clean and aggressive vocals, thunderous and intricate drum patterns powering everything – it’s clear when the Metal Allegiance project came together (comprised of everyone from Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe to Dream Theatre’s Mike Portnoy, Pantera’s Phil Anselmo and more), they simply wanted to put out a record that would speak to the times, whilst also emitting a timeless quality itself.
Each song features the same core setup of Testament’s Alex Skolnick on lead guitar and Portnoy on drums (with Megadeth’s Dave Ellefson on bass for the...

I really like this idea. Wear Your Music collects used guitar strings from popular musicians, turns them into bracelets, and sells them, with 100% of the net profits going to the musician's charity of choice. Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath has donated some of his guitar strings, with the proceeds going to Nordoff Robbins music charity. There are several different styles available, at different price points.
Other musicians of note include Robert Trujillo, Kirk Hammett and James Hetford of Metallica; Lita Ford; and David Ellefson of Megadeth.
Prices start at $100 at WearYourMusic.org

You can say a lot about Dave Mustaine. Some good… Some bad… But you can't deny his ability to constantly produce solid metal albums every couple years. Megadeth's latest and fourteenth studio effort is at times an uneven and messy affair but there are some gems scattered about. 'Super Collider' was described as being very similar to 'Peace Sells' by David Ellefson during the recording process and that prediction is so far off the mark it's laughable. Now, I don't need a spiritual successor to a thrash album from the 80's. I actually prefer growth even though some die-hard mullets will tell me I'm wrong for appreciating artists who modify their sound over time. The end result of modernizing your sound doesn't always work and that's the problem with 'Super Collider' in the same sense of...

This is not the album that fans were expecting from the current generation of the band, and as such it has already drawn a fair amount of fire and hate from many with statements such as those from this Metal Sucks review:
“Super Collider is undoubtedly the worst Megadeth album since 2001′s The World Needs a Hero, and it is very possibly as bad as 1999′s infamous Risk…This isn’t metal — it’s muzak, an album populated predominantly by old man rock…”
Reviews such as this one are dismissive, plain and simple. Born from this line of thinking: “I dislike either the person, or the band, so this is instantly bad.” My advice, look out for a “MegaDave” reference,...

Megadeth bassist David Ellefson recently caused a stir on the heavy metal news outlets when he revealed in an interview with St. Louis Today that he was studying to become a pastor in the Lutheran church. Many fans of the band criticized Ellefson for betraying his metal roots, but he's hardly the first headbanger to find religion. Here's a list of eight metallers who went from rock star to choir boy.

Chicago – Head banging and air guitaring was the order of the day a couple weeks ago, as Dave Mustaine of the group Megadeth made an appearance at the Borders Books in Chicago on State Street to greet fans and sign his new book, “Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir.”
Mustaine was an member of Metallica starting in 1981, but was fired from that band in 1983. That same year, determined to make a group that would be more successful than his former bandmates, he founded Megadeth with bassist Dave Ellefson. With several albums behind them, and Mustaine’s 2009 ranking as the number one metal guitarist, Megadeth has assured their place in heavy metal history.
After making his appearance at Borders on August 20th, Mustaine played before a packed house later that night at the Uic Pavilion in Chicago.

Slipknot star Paul Gray's supergroup side project Hail! are to continue with plans to tour Europe in June following the bass player's death on Monday, May 24. The rocker was preparing for the three-week tour, which begins at the weekend, May 30, when he was found dead in an Iowa hotel room.
Bandmates Tim 'Ripper' Owens, David Ellefson and Andreas Kisser insist the show must go on, and they've drafted in session musician James Lomenzo, who has played with White Lion and Megadeth, to replace the dead star. A statement from Hail! reads, "On Monday we were dealt a devastating blow with Paul's passing two days before our departure. We discussed the situation and unanimously thought that, in the face of this tragedy, we needed to remain strong and push forward because Paul would have vehemently insisted that the show must go on."
