Last year, Asheville, North Carolina’s Wednesday put out a collection of cover songs called Mowing the Leaves Instead of Piling ‘em Up. Not only was it the best lawn-care referencing release by a North Carolina band since Superchunk’s classic 1992 single “Mower,” it also served as a killer distillation of Wednesday’s own unique strain of downhome indie-rock. The tracklist had Nineties shoegaze (Medicine), new shoegaze (Hotline TNT), tragic sad-guy legends (Vic Chesnutt, Chris Bell), a punk-guitar hero (Greg Sage), touchy-feely alt-rock (Smashing Pumpkins), alcoholic alt-country (“Drive-By Truckers’ “Women...

Leicester-based filmmaker Steve Lawson seems to have struck up quite the partnership with UK distributor High Fliers Films, having had the last half a dozen or so films he’s made released on DVD here in Blighty – distribution that has seen his films hit supermarket shelves across the country. That’s probably because Lawson has recently focused on making genre films based on familiar tropes – Dracula, Jack the Ripper, Jekyll and Hyde; hell Lawson has even tackled the likes of the Musketeers and Dick Turpin!
With The Mummy: Resurrection Lawson tells his version of the all-too-common undead horror icon, turned cliche. And by his version, I mean a film made on the cheap and on as little a number of...

Gamers had a big win the other day when the NASCAR driver Ross Chastain managed to get a qualifying position in a big tournament in Phoenix with an absolutely insane move he later said he learned on a NASCAR game on the Nintendo GameCube.
Former wrestler and sports analyst Pat McAfee shared the truly crazy clip last week, which quickly spread to all corners of the internet. The clip shows Chastain’s red-and-black car gain a huge burst of speed as he rides along the arena’s barrier, passing several cars at almost the last minute of the race. A secret ingredient in this was activating fifth gear
This move was attempted last year by Kyle Larson, but it didn’t give him the lead he was looking for. It’s also clearly a risky strategy, with any irregularities or pronounced bumps in the border Chastain was driving on having...

Ahead of the UK Digital release of The Heiress on March 15th, actress Candis Nergaard talks about the harrowing research for her lead role, causing a stir on Newsnight, her Romany roots and coping with lockdown.
You star in a new British supernatural horror film, The Heiress. Tell us how you got the part and what is was about the script that appealed to you.
I was contacted early on the process by the director Chris Bell who’d had me in mind as an option for Claire. I read an early draft of the script and absolutely loved the part, it’s rare for me to be scared by horror but the script alone conjured such vivid imagery that I was haunted by it, I knew it would work. When The Heiress was ready to go, I was offered the role of Claire, I couldn’t wait to get my teeth into it.

Ahead of the UK Digital release of The Heiress on March 15th 2021, director Chris Bell talks about familial horror influences, his South London ‘hooligangster’ phase and learning new lockdown skills.
How did you get the idea for The Heiress?
I was in my local library when I came across a painting. The artist was a local lady. I was drawn to this eerie artwork and I knew I had to meet her. When we did meet I told her that I was going to write a film inspired by this painting. Not only that but I promised to feature her in the movie – and I did just that.
Myself, alongside Danny and Kelly Prescott, created the script for what became The Heiress. I’d arranged a meeting with producer Jezz Vernon, whom I had recently worked with on another movie. We pitched the script to him and from there he came on board.

Tens of thousands of people have signed a new Change.org petition demanding that The Beach Boys cancel their upcoming Wednesday concert at a convention in Reno, Nevada that many say honors trophy hunting.
The convention, run by Safari Club International, has been widely criticized for glorifying the killing of bears, lions, bald eagles, chimpanzees, parrots, and turtles as “trophies” for hunters.
The petition, which has 55,000+ signers and climbing, is one of the most popular petitions on Change.org this week and has drawn the endorsement of Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, founding members of The Beach Boys. The Beach Boys currently tour with two members, Mike Love and Bruce Johnston.
“This organization supports trophy hunting, which both Al and I are emphatically opposed to,” Brian Wilson tweeted on Monday afternoon. “There’s nothing we can do personally to stop the show, so please join us in signing the petition.

Geoff Emerick helped change the way sound is captured in the recording studio.
The Beatles were well known for flouting official rules in order to push the limits of what could be captured on tape, and Geoff Emerick was one of their greatest enablers. Recording engineer and producer Geoff Emerick, best known for his work with the Beatles, died of a heart attack at the age of 72, according to Variety.
“Today, at around 2’o’clock, I was making my way back from Arizona to Los Angeles to go pick up Geoff so we could transport some gold records and platinum plaques to our show in Tucson,” Emerick's manager William Zabaleta said in a statement.
“While on the phone with Geoff Emerick, he had complications, dropped the phone. At that point I called 911, but by the time they got there it was too late. So Geoff suffered from...

"What if I told you I had the cure for the opioid crisis in my hand?" The Orchard has released an official trailer for a (potentially controversial) medicinal health documentary titled A Leaf of Faith, the latest film from doc director Chris Bell. Even though the title might make you think this doc is about medicinal marijuana, it's actually about another kind of potent, powerful plant - one called "Kratom". Grown in Southeast Asia, the plant is part of the coffee family and is, supposedly, a safe and effective alternative to medicinal opioid painkillers. Why is this important? Because opioids are the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. Really. Which is a bit freaky, but it's true. "Join Chris Bell as he explores the natural world of this never before known harmless leaf that could be the perfect human medicine, while providing answers to all his questions...

Simon is the latest horror feature project from British writer/director Warren Badenski and it's a real love letter to classic 80's horror. The movie is based on the filmmakers previous short horror film of the same name which has been expanded into this feature length effort. This expansion also managed to see the movie itself change from just a simple slasher-themed outing, in a similar vein to that of classic's such as 'Friday the 13th', and evolve during development into a much more story orientated horror experience like that of 'Hellraiser' or even 'Silence of The Lambs'. The movie stars Chris Bell and Katie Alexander-Thom who reprise their roles from the original short as well as Lexi Wolfe, Emma McMorrow, Nathaniel Francis and Dean Martin. Simon is now available worldwide on VOD as well as on DVD across the Us and you can head below to check out the trailer.

The flamboyant life and premature death of Australian entertainer Peter Allen will be dramatised in a 2-part miniseries.
Shine Australia is developing Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door, for the Seven Network, following their successful collaboration on Inxs: Never Tear Us Apart.
To be produced by Rory Callaghan and Kerrie Mainwaring, the Allen mini will be Shine.s third major Australian drama. In the can is Catching Milat, a two-part telemovie recounting the investigation that led to the arrest of serial killer Ivan Milat, which Seven commissioned.
The Allen project has not been announced but word has spread among talent agents and actors.
Shawn Seet (Love Child, The Code, Underbelly) is attached to direct. The plot will follow Allen (born Peter Richard Woolnough) from his teenage years in Tenterfield, Nsw, where he sang and played piano at the local pub.
He and Chris Bell formed the Allen Brothers.

The 2014 Los Angeles Film Festival (the 20th anniversary of the fest) kicked off this week, with the North American premiere of "Snowpiercer" on Wednesday. Plenty of other notable premieres are continuing to roll out this weekend, including Nathan Silver's latest, "Uncertain Terms," and we've got the exclusive poster debut. Silver's films "Exit Elena" and "Soft in the Head" have brought him notice in the indie world — our own Chris Bell called "Exit Elena" "a layered and hilarious look at the dynamics of family, relationships, and need," and "one of the few microbudgeted films which should be required viewing for undergrads" — and "Uncertain Terms" marks the 30 year old's fourth feature, with his fifth already in the works. "Uncertain Terms" takes place at a home for pregnant teens, and stars India Menuez (seen in Olivier Assayas' "Something in the Air"), whose performance has been tipped as having breakout potential, as well as her co-lead,...

"Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me"
What's It About? The Memphis band Big Star has legions of diehard fans and critical acclaim aplenty, and its influence can be felt across the history of rock 'n' roll. But why did mainstream success elude them? Why did Big Star flame out after only three albums? This doc tries to put the pieces together.
Why We're In: Even fans don't know the whole story about this cult band and its members, so this doc will help them fill in some of the blanks. Chris Bell died in 1978 as an unknown, and the late Alex Chilton was also not a huge fan of talking to the media. "Nothing Can Hurt Me" puts the band into context of the Memphis scene, and it has tons of interviews with everyone left who was involved with the band, rock critics, and...

-- Campaign slogan for Texas gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman
Should Kinky Friedman be governor of Texas? There are plenty of reasons why the hell not. There also are plenty of reasons to watch Along Came Kinky ... Texas Jewboy for Governor, a lively 2009 documentary about Friedman's quixotic campaign for the office.
A mystery novelist, satirist and proudly offensive musician by trade (his band, the Texas Jewboys, was famous for songs like "Asshole from El Paso"), Friedman entered the 2006 Texas gubernatorial race with no political experience but plenty of name recognition as a Texas icon. He found himself in an unprecedented four-way race that offered voters and pundits plenty of political Lone Star lunacy.
The campaign was surprisingly fierce and competitive, at least to determine who would be runner-up to incumbent governor Rick Perry. Perry relied on his incumbency and redder-than-red conservative record to remain comfortably ahead in...

Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me is the latest of a recent crop of buzzworthy documentaries that introduces viewers to talented artists who struggled to find mainstream success when their music was originally released. The story of Memphis rockers Big Star includes incredible artistic achievements followed by snowballing bad luck. When band members Alex Chilton, Chris Bell, Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel formed in 1971, Chilton was reinventing himself a few years after having a #1 hit single at the tender age of 16 with "The Letter" (by his previous band The Box Tops).
Everything about the early days of Big Star predicted great things to come. After recording their debut album, the cheekily titled "#1 Record", at Ardent Studios in Memphis, the album's release was set to be distributed as one of the first rock albums on Ardent's record label deal through the legendary Stax Records. That label had just signed a deal with Columbia Records,...

Despite what our own Chris Bell might think, Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond The Pines" is one of the best movies of the year, and it opens in a pretty spectacular fashion. Nodding to the Dardennes, we follow Ryan Gosling's motorcycle riding stuntman from behind as he suits up and walks through a crowded carnival to get to the circular steel cage where he'll perform his death defying stunt. And it's all done in one long take. It's a lengthy sequence, with lots of extras and it likely required some serious precision coordination, but it seems to be a technique Cianfrance digs as he's been putting it to use in the advertising world. This March he dropped a pretty clever, baseball oriented spot for Dick's Sporting Goods just as spring training was getting underway, and with the NFL preseason around the corner, he's done it again with football.

The average guy on the street may know who or what Big Star is or was. But the right guy will always know—or be heartened to learn. A grand power-pop outfit formed in 1971 in Memphis by Alex Chilton, former lead singer of the Box Tops, and Chris Bell, a local kid with a gift for sensitive, tensile songwriting, the band released three badly distributed and decidedly non-lucrative albums before disintegrating in 1974. Only then did lovers of pop music around the world begin hearing about them, seeking out their records like lost sailors drawn by a mermaid's song. You could say Big Star achieved that dubious distinction known as cult status, but the ardor they inspire is deeper and more mysterious than that. Music historian Robert Gordon put it best in his marvelous 1995 book...

Rock 'n roll history is littered with bands that should have been more famous, that were talented far beyond what record sales indicated and more influential than any comparable arena packing artist. But few of them have endured and continue the way Big Star does. While they'll continue to fight to get recognized alongside bigger acts of the 1970s, the upcoming "Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me" will hopefully finally secure their place in history. The film from directors Drew DeNicola and Olivia Mori, both celebrates the artistry of the group and is honesty about the troubles the band, and particularly key songwriters Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, faced over their career. The filmmakers gather up a batch of musicians -- including members of The Flaming Lips and R.E.M. -- to share their reflections on the group, along with countless more industry players, and members of Big Star themselves.

So far....Ok, first off, sorry to disappoint you if you thought this was going to be one big master list from all of our contributors. One thing is clear: getting a consensus out of the entire The Playlist is impossible and man, even if we put it to a vote (which we've done in the past), the results are generally dissatisfying and as you know, consensus tends to get a little dull. So instead, this will be our one-stop shopping for all our Best of 2012 year-end lists (and all our Best of 2012 content). So far we have four fairly distinctly different top 10 lists and they're only going to get more and more different from these two (at least we suspect as much). Here's the top 10s we have so far. It feels like only yesterday that we were talking about the best films of 2011, and yet here we are, nearly at the end of June, and we've seen pretty much everything that the first half of the year has to offer. So with the mid-point of 2012 nearly upon us, we thought we'd look over the best films we've seen in theaters over the last six months.
And it's not been a terrible year so far. There have been a few real stinkers and some disappointments, but there's also been some decent blockbuster fare and a bevy of foreign language and independent films that have been serious treats for filmgoers. How many of these will still be on our year-end lists come December remains to be seen; there's some tough competition on the way. But all in all, the first part of this year at the movies could have been a lot worse.

Generally you can find plenty of information about your favorite stateside filmmaker, and depending on who they are (see: David Gordon Green), you can find a long list of potential upcoming projects to investigate. But being head-over-heels for a foreign director is a different story -- without the Hollywood system or independent film cliques to generate word of mouth or gossip, you can spend years without hearing a peep from even the biggest festival sweethearts, and only last week were were discussing around the Playlist water cooler where some of our favorite international filmmakers had gone in the last few years.

Given that he's one of the more diverse and prolific filmmakers out there, it's been a disappointingly long four years without a new movie from Richard Linklater ("Me and Orson Welles" premiered at Tiff in 2008). Fortunately, the Austin, Texas-based filmmaker is back with "Bernie," a dark comedy which reunites him with two of his most memorable leads, Jack Black and Matthew McConaughey, that has picked up strong reviews and, opening in limited release last Friday, has been performing surprisingly well at the box office.
With "Bernie" expanding wider this weekend (read our review), it seemed like the perfect time to look over Linklater's diverse and eclectic career. He'd already made his mark by founding the Austin Film Society in 1985 (which has gone on to be the center of the industy in the Texas city), but since his debut with an ultra-low-budget student film in 1988, Linklater's tackled everything from romance to...
