Well-made Sin City film noir, could have been better
lor_1 February 2017
Besides creating several classic features for Wicked Pictures (e.g., Haunted Nights) the team of Jim Enright, Jonathan Morgan and Steven St. Croix made this effective though a bit sophomoric neo-noir for Sin City that holds up well 23 years later.

Set entirely at night, it has a perfectly cast St. Croix as a guilt- ridden ex-cop, caught up in a new case to prove his lover Asia Carrera did not murder her husband, the dastardly Randy West. Morgan wrote the script as well as taking the role of West's business partner (importing Greek statues and antiques), but the plot twists he wrote are too obvious and detract from the otherwise engrossing murder mystery.

It's engrossing thanks to Steven's quality characterization, which won an industry award that I can fully endorse (for a change -usually they're phony). Much of the film unfolds in flashbacks with Steven's voice-over narration fully in the noir tradition. Sex scenes are well- shot, with full-bush Carrera always a pleasure to watch and a reverse gang-bang in which three beautiful druggies service Morgan featuring Nikki Sinn also a treat.

Clues lead to a sudden ending that is intentionally made a bit cryptic by Morgan and Enright, but at least had the virtue of forcing me to review the story's clues and ponder exactly what the outcome implied about the guilt or innocence of the characters. Morgan would go on to up his game in future scripts but deserves credit for this okay early effort.
