Much Needed Episode, Even With Controversy

I think it was an incredibly necessary episode for Saturday Night Live.

This may be an early thing to say, but I think it brought a ton more viewers than normal, or to the very least had a lot more people go out of their way to tune in for it. Whether for good or for bad, this will do nothing more than give the show a ton more attention, that's why they bring in people like Dave Chappelle to come on to host as well. I think this will easily have helped the show as a whole.

Whether certain people like it or not, Shane Gillis is undoubtedly one of the most popular comedians in the world right now, and by a good margin. He has comedy that pushes the boundaries more than certain others, and in today's state of the world that also comes with divisiveness on him.

That being said, for those who are a fan of Shane Gillis, expect to potentially have a mixed bag about the episode as well. He has an online sketch comedy show right now, Gilly and Keeves, which has had an intense amount of praise due to that. The main other writer for said show, John McKeever, did not do any help with writing of the sketches as people had anticipated or hoped. However, front to back they were all funny and well written, with some harder hitters than others. The only sketch I did not understand was the cold open about Trump. It was essentially just 4 minutes of cast members saying how the Republican politicians for this election season are a bunch of shills who have been repeatedly disrespected by him but still look around and say they love Trump so much. It just didn't work because of course they are, they're politicians, and it just dragged out long without really feeling like there is a punchline outside of that. That being said, all of the other sketches were very funny, and with Gillis being friends with most of the cast, like Bowen Yang, Michael Che and Marcello Hernandez really showed at times as well.

Now the monologue, that was the main amount of controversy from it all. He is a comedian who likes to toe the line on what's acceptable, just look at his Netflix special alone. If that is not your style of comedy, then you will not like his monologue. That being said, the fact that he fully stuck to his guns on his brand of comedy was remarkable, I do not feel like you should change what makes you famous as a comedian on one of the biggest stages of comedy.

Certainly not a 21 Savage fan, but I believe that he did do a great job performing. I thought his set was great with the ballet dancers in the back and smoke rolling through. Even as a person who is not a fan, I thought he did a great job and made the most of his two songs.

All around, I'm mainly rating it as a 10 due multiple different aspects. First and foremost, to the viewership it received from an audience who are not, quite frankly, all too interested in Saturday Night Live. Secondly, the sketches were very funny and saw no issue with them. His monologue is going to be more of a controversial one, that should be left up to the viewer alone. I believe this was a great choice for Saturday Night Live.
