The Diplomat (II) (2023– )
9/10
Quite an Engrossing Series
23 April 2023
It's off to a roaring season 1. You wanted it not to end but it did in an explosive way. This is the way that movies in this genre should be made.

It was such an enjoyable movie experience, so life-like because what's in the movie could happen in real life. What made it more interesting is it's told in the context of events that we're familiar with in recent years such as Brexit, the festering war in Ukraine, the assassination of bin Laden.

The cast is splendid. But, like any other political drama worth its salt, there are actors and there are actors. Keri Russell, who's also executive producer, is amazing here. There's never a dull moment with her. She portrays an intelligent, feisty and pragmatic diplomat. Her screen presence is scintillating. The fact that she's now older with lines on her once pretty face makes her so much more credible in her role.

The other actor that strikes me is Ali Ahn. She's great here, too. I like how she handles her scenes with Ato Essandoh.

Perhaps, like many others like me, I can't wait for season 2 to roll. As Rufus Sewell's character intones: diplomacy doesn't work until it does. Right on.
