When all that smoking happened in Mad Men, I attributed it to Weiner striving for authenticity in the 1960s. Now that I've watched two installments of The Romanovs, I know that he just uses cigarettes as a continuous distraction from the plot. Every character seems to smoke. I'm tired of this glorification of smoking, and I'll skip the remaining episodes. The first two weren't that ingesting anyway.
