"Le quattro giornate de Napoli" ("The Four Days of Naples" in English) is about a lesser known event from WWII: the German army's march into Naples and the townspeople's resistance to them. Probably the most effective scene is while the Nazis are marching through an alley, and the Neapolitans start throwing things out of windows in the hope of stopping the goose-steppers. Outgunned though they were, the townspeople had already experienced fascism, and were thus determined not to let their city fall to Nazi Germany. Sure enough, there's a major showdown towards the end.
Nanni Loy's Academy Award-nominated movie creates a real sense of realism. The viewer feels as if s/he is there amongst the Neapolitans, doing everything possible to get rid of the swastika-clad goons. What happens to the boy pretty much sums up what war is all about.
All in all, this is a movie that everyone should see. Excellent.
