Caravaggio (2007 TV Movie)

Not Your Grandmother's (Derek Jarman) Version
25 October 2007
For anyone who saw Derek Jarman's 1986 edition of Caravaggio's life, you absolutely must see this version. It was produced for Italian TV,but despite that,it's a feast for the eye. For those who didn't see the Jarman version (or any other for that matter),and are interested in learning of Caravaggio's life, this is the one to see. Despite the fact that this television to large screen has been somewhat marred by major cuts (edited down from six hours for TV,to 130 minutes)it still manages to capture the essence of Caravaggio's life & work. It is cast to perfection, filmed with attention to artistic detail (colour, visual composition, including light & shadow,etc.). Perhaps one day we will be treated to a DVD release of the complete, uncut version,or maybe even a limited theatrical run of the six hour version (heck, the uncut version of 'The Best Of Youth'enjoyed a brief theatrical run in this country---why not Caravaggio?)
