Atonement (2007)
Cinematography = gorgeous
It's unnervingly fascinating and draws you in - but then by the end of it, you are just wondering if they skipped most of the movie because they ran out of time.
Provocative however and just beautiful, gorgeous cinematography which almost makes up for everything else.
The Gilded Age (2022)
Ornamental at best.
For some reason I'm still watching this show, perhaps being an optimist I'm still hoping that something is actually going to happen.
As a lover of Austen and of Downtown Abbey and of period dramas I find this one rather underwhelming. Alas I've watched enough to be somewhat attached to these characters so I'll stick it out till the bitter end.
Bridgerton (2020)
Levels of cringe
Season 2 felt slightly less cringe but also less raunchy for those that are watching for that factor.
Getting used to the casting and appreciate it better without the often wooden facial expressions or RJP.
Have to keep reminding myself that it's based on a romance novel and appreciate it for what it is - and not keep getting distracted by dresses which appear to have zips, behaviour which wouldn't occur in that era and all the character depth of a shallow dish of water.
I enjoyably binged both seasons nonetheless and found less reason to cringe in season 2.
Shaandaar (2015)
So bad it's almost good
This is delightfully bad.
No doubt your expectations will be extremely low and if they are you might even enjoy the almost progressive body positive attitude, the Weekend at Bernies reference, and the k-Jo cheese factor.
Tuesdays and Fridays (2021)
Okay okay
Wasn't horrible - had some cute moments and lots of potential. However it jumped around from trying to me new and modern but ending up cliched - but without the development and soul needed to make you care.
Mubarakan (2017)
Mediocre
Not offensively bad but highly mediocre. Disappointing because these actors could have made a way better script work.
Zero character development, zero empathy for characters, zero emotions.
Doordarshan (2020)
Had promise, wasn't bad.
The acting was all good, the vibe was nice but something was missing - which made it lack a little bit of heart somewhere in there. Maybe the ending was a bit rushed - or maybe the grandmothers character was not that likeable, I'm not quite sure.
Otherwise, quite heartwarming and generally pleasant.
The Favourite (2018)
Totally ambivalent to the movie and it's characters.
I felt like this was one of those films that you are supposed to like because it's trying to be irreverent and witty but in the end it's like a joke that you have to explain because no one is laughing.
I watched this, because I recently watched The Great and enjoyed that thoroughly and it was also co-written by Tony McNamara. However I felt like The Great knew exactly what it wanted to be. Interesting and quirky and entertaining.
With The Favourite, I was mostly just bored and confused. The characters had very few redeeming qualities and it felt immensely difficult to feel anything about any of them. The elements of the movie were good - acting, sets, costume... and yet when I got to the end I mostly just felt relief that it had ended.
