Jeannie Epper, the peerless, fearless stunt performer who doubled for Lynda Carter on Wonder Woman and swung on a vine across a 350-foot gorge and propelled down an epic mudslide as Kathleen Turner in Romancing the Stone, has died. She was 83.
Epper died Sunday night of natural causes at her home in Simi Valley, her family told The Hollywood Reporter.
Just one member of a dynasty of stunt performers that Steven Spielberg dubbed the “Flying Wallendas of Film” — starting with her father, John Epper, there have been four generations of Eppers in show business since the 1930s — she worked on 150-plus films and TV shows during an astounding 70-year career.

Billy Gardell is feeling “grateful” as his hit CBS sitcom Bob Hearts Abishola bid farewell on Monday night (May 6) after five seasons. “It’s always emotional when you end the job – this crazy actor panic of, ‘I’m never going to work again!’ – and then you settle into thinking about the work you did,” Gardell told TribLive. “I’m very proud of this.” His comments echo sentiments he shared with the outlet during a set visit as part of the Television Critics Association Winter 2024 press tour in February. “I told everybody when we started — because I learned this with Mike & Molly — spend your days gratefully,” he shared, referencing the previous CBS sitcom he worked on, Mike & Molly, which ended its six-season run in 2016. “This is not something that happens to everyone all the time,” he continued. “Be grateful when you’re here, stay in the moment and understand that in five years,...

Tom Brady may be the greatest of all time, but his roast wasn’t. The thing is, it maybe could have been.
Netflix is all about eventizing these days, and probably the easiest way to do that — outside of sports rights — is live programming. Sunday’s “The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady,” had plenty of sports and too much live-ness for its own good.
The roast began at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt, and proceeded to run, non-stop, for more than three hours. Never have commercials on Netflix been more needed. Or a video editor.
What was the point of doing this live? The danger, sure, but roasts are dangerous by their very nature. Live makes it an even thinner tightrope, we get that, but at what expense? The answer: enjoyment.

Blue Bloods airs its final episodes this year following CBS‘ decision to cancel the long-running police procedural last November. However, the show’s star, Tom Selleck, still hopes the network will “come to their senses” and reverse the decision. In a new interview with CBS News, the Emmy-winning actor was asked if Blue Bloods was truly ending. “Well, that’s a good question. I will continue to think that CBS will come to their senses,” Selleck answered. “We’re the third-highest scripted show in all of broadcast,” he continued. “We’re winning the night. All the cast wants to come back. And I can tell you this: we aren’t sliding off down a cliff. We’re doing good shows and still holding our place. So, I don’t know. You tell me!” This echoed comments Selleck made to TV Insider back in January, where he noted, “CBS will find...

Grown-ish is making way for a full-circle guest-starring appearance as Malcolm-Jamal Warner joins Freeform‘s black-ish spinoff in the role of Darnell, father to Diggy Simmons‘ Doug. In an exclusive sneak peek, we’re giving fans their first look at Warner’s character in action as he observes Doug at work. The topic is a touchy one for the two as Doug butts heads with his dad Darnell over his career choice. Now, Warner’s guest-starring role is bringing a direct link between the two by stepping into the Freeform show. Freeform In the clip, above, the scene begins with Aaron (Trevor Jackson) chatting up Doug at the bar, where he says, “I’m good with parents,...

Disney+ is back on a growth trajectory, thank goodness. Even better? Disney+ is darn close to actually making money.
After an October 2023 price hike, the core Disney+ service lost 1.3 million subscribers. Not this time. From January-March 2024, it added 6.3 million subscribers — and its Arpu (average revenue per user) increased by 44 cents. Disney+ now has 117.6 million subs, not counting Disney+ Hotstar. More than half of those are outside of the U.S. and Canada.
In February, Disney predicted Disney+ (again not counting Hotstar) would add between 5.5 and 6 million subs from January to March. Underpromise/overdeliver: always a solid strategy in business.
Disney’s direct-to-consumer (Dtc) business lost just $18 million in the quarter, which for the company is its fiscal second quarter of 2024. Last quarter, the loss was $138 million. Disney CEO Bob Iger has previously said Disney+ will be profitable by the final quarter of the company’s fiscal-year 2024 — so, by September 30, 2024 — a timeline he reiterated on Tuesday.

Whoopi Goldberg‘s newest memoir is on shelves today, May 7, and it’s full of touching stories about her experience being raised as Caryn Elaine Johnson by her stoic single mother Emma alongside her brother and best friend Clyde. The pages of the autobiography — titled Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me — are filled with anecdotes that are intensely personal and yet read like the stuff of Hollywood legends. The story details how the eventual Oscar winner first found her passion for performance and sweet stories about her mother’s support of her dreams and decisions … and how much of a fangirl she became around certain A-listers that she crossed paths with. Goldberg’s memorialization of herself and her late loved ones is emotional and so very informative. Here are some of the biggest revelations to be found in Bits and Pieces. Disney’s entertainment streaming segment, anchored by Disney+, scored its first profitable quarter, helping to partially offset continued weakness in the media conglomerate’s linear TV business for the first three months of 2024.
To be sure, Disney’s overall streaming business was still in the red for the quarter when factoring in ESPN+, which had an operating loss of $65 million. The company reiterated its expectation that its combined streaming operations will achieve profitability in the September 2024 quarter.
Overall, Disney revenue for the quarter ended March 30 was in line with Wall Street expectations, while it beat on adjusted earnings per share.

Back in 2019, on a visit to Los Angeles, celebrated Indian director Sanjay Leela Bhansali stopped in at the offices of Netflix. In his informal five-minute meeting with CEO Ted Sarandos, Bhansali pitched an idea — it would be an opulent tale of warring courtesans set amid India’s struggle for independence. Sarandos greenlit the project on the spot.
Now Bhansali’s Hindi-language series, “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” is making its U.S. debut (episodes dropped on May 1). Spanning 1920 through 1947, the lavish story is set in the Heeramandi district of Lahore, British India, the milieu of the tawaifs. As with the geisha of Japan,...

When first we heard that Jon Stewart was switching up his Daily Show schedule this week, we assumed it had something to do with the Netflix Is a Joke festival, where he had a show Friday night.
What we didn’t know at the time was that instead of sitting behind the desk of his own show this Monday night, he’d be visiting two other late-night shows instead.
In order of appearance, the first stop on Stewart’s Monday night comedy tour was episode #2 of Everybody’s in L.A., John Mulaney’s six-episode experiment of a live late-night show for Netflix. The delightfully frenetic show—which includes viewer calls, random tangents from announcer/actor Richard Kind, and plenty of unintended snafus—had Stewart simultaneously confused, amazed, and seemingly terrified.
“I feel like this entire show is a Banksy,” he finally declared. “I feel like, at the end of this,...

We All Get 10 Practice Contempt Charges, Right?
As admirably as Judge Juan Merchan has scoffed at Donald Trump’s legal team and its increasingly ridiculous and sweaty excuses for their client’s flagrant flouting of the gag order against him, the fact that Trump was issued his tenth contempt of court judgement on Monday for attacking the jurors and officers of the court in his criminal trial had late-night hosts looking for new ways to express their incredulity. With the judge putting it in writing that the next violation will quite probably mean jail time for Trump, at least that mental picture seemed to jazz up the hosts, with Jimmy Kimmel looking eagerly forward to the inevitable, noting, “It’s like trying to get a dog to stop licking itself.

From HBO’s ascent in the late 1990s through its dragon-aided roar across the 2010s, the network’s original series tackled universal stories, stretching across continents and decades.

There’s a question the trio of podcasters at the center of the darkly comedic thriller Bodkinask themselves: “How much of this is true, and how much is a story?” As series creator Jez Scharf tells Tudum, “Once you start asking that question, all of reality falls apart.”

First on LateNighter: Jon Stewart won’t be on The Daily Show tonight, but you just might see him on two others.
Stewart was already set to appear tonight on John Mulaney Presents Everybody’s in L.A., the six-episode talk show streaming live on Netflix all this week.
But if Jimmy Kimmel’s latest Instagram post is any indication, it seems the Daily Show host may also be dropping by Jimmy Kimmel Live!
“Ran into a stranger this morning,” Kimmel captioned an Instagram photo of himself with Stewart. “Invited him on the show tonight.”The pair are pictured outside an Arby’s—the fast-food chain Stewart has had a, uh, beef with for years.

There are a lot of critical details for the American space program to work out before a manned mission to Mars can possibly occur, from perfecting the science to organizing logistics to securing finances and more. The element PBS‘s newest documentary sheds an extraordinary new light on is the human condition factor — chiefly, how to safely separate a person from everyone and everything they love for the years upon years it’ll take to complete the mission. In Space: The Longest Goodbye, directed by Ido Mizrahy and premiering on PBS tonight, May 6, at 10/9c, it’s clear that NASA has to do much more than just crunch numbers to make any Mars adventure a reality. The documentary features testimonials from former and current astronauts as well as the agency’s resident psychologist, Dr. Al Holland, who is charged with finding a solution for keeping astronauts sane and productive while...

If there’s any truth to the old adage that history happens first as tragedy and then as farce, it was fitting that years of media sniping and public relitigation of the New England Patriots’ six Super Bowl wins culminated in Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and Robert Kraft doing shots together at a Netflix comedy festival.
When 9,100 fans made the trek to Los Angeles’ Kia Forum for “The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady” (stylized as “The G.R.O.A.T”), they likely expected the mix of vicious insult comedy and cringe-inducing rebuttals that powered years of Comedy Central roasts. The event, which was part of the sprawling Netflix Is a Joke Festival and broadcasted live on the streaming service, offered those up in droves. Host Kevin Hart emceed a three-hour showcase of unfiltered comedic venom from a mix of A-list celebrities, NFL greats, and longtime roast staples...

Warner Bros. Discovery is staying on the sidelines of the Paramount Global acquisition drama — at least for now. That was the signal sent Monday by WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav during his appearance at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills.
Zaslav was pressed during the hourlong panel about the status of WB Discovery’s bid to extend its TV rights agreement with the NBA, and he was pointedly asked to defend the high levels of compensation for media CEOs, including himself. Zaslav came in for criticism last week when his 2023 comp package of about $49 million was disclosed after...

Tasked, ostensibly, with shaking up a culture of the Disney-backed news organization that pit anchors against one another and led to claims of intolerable behavior behind the scenes, Godwin was supposed to revamp a storied journalism hub without losing any of the impetus that spurred employees to make shows such as “World News Tonight” and “Good Morning America” the most-watched in their category.

From the moment the very first trailer for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Heeramandi” on Netflix arrived, it’s become increasingly difficult to ignore that a certain type of Indian actress has passed into extinction.
Since the dawn of Indian cinema, music and dance have been integral to the movie-going experience, with extra emphasis placed on the “heroine” — a leading lady who could not only carry a whole film as an actor, but also captivate the audience as a graceful, expressive dancer. Think of Hollywood corollaries like Judy Garland, Ginger Rogers, Doris Day — but if they were working well into the late 20th and even 21st century. It’s inherently wrapped up in India’s history of folk dance, which is always present at festivals or celebrations; and classical dance, which requires extensive training and was often a precursor to entering beauty pageants and the film industry. This is not the documentary renaissance we hoped for. Despite its 2023 Oscar win for “Navalny,” CNN pulled back on non-fiction production. Non-fiction programming at Showtime Networks, which produced Oscar-nominated “Attica” in 2022, is no more.
“The New York Times Presents” series, which produced titles like “The Killing of Breonna Taylor” and “Framing Britney Spears,” is being phased out in favor of integrating non-fiction video into the media brand. Hot Docs is on the ropes; Participant, which produced documentaries like “An Inconvenient Truth,” “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” and “American Factory,” closed last month.
And then there’s Netflix, which is still very much in the documentary game under Adam Del Deo, Netflix VP of original documentary films and limited series — and can afford to be with nearly 270 million global subscribers. However, it’s a specific sort of gameplay: For tight, high-quality nonfiction work that’s heartwarming, or thrilling, or stars a celebrity,...

It was the moment that had 52 million people on the edge of their couches during the Friends series finale, which aired 20 years ago today. Ross (David Schwimmer) raced to the airport to make one last-ditch effort to stop Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) from taking her dream job in Paris to stay in New York with him and their daughter Emma, but she got on the plane anyway. At that moment, it seemed the will-they-won’t-they couple of the century was officially over until Ross got home and played a voicemail from Rachel. She was devastated by how they left things and admitted she still had feelings for him. As they bubbled up inside of her, she became desperate to get off the plane to be with him, much to the chagrin of a bothered flight attendant. Rachel started to make a scene, which was recorded over the voicemail playing for a panicked Ross.
