Features the voices of: Ayumu Murase, Kaito Ishikawa, Yuki Kaji, Yuichi Nakamura | Written and Directed by Susumu Mitsunaka
An epic basketball game is set to take place between rival teams Karasuno High School and Nekoma High School. It also means that rival players Shoyo Hinata (Ayumu Murase) and Kenma Kozume (Yuki Kaji) finally get their chance to play against each other, after numerous practice matches. As is the way of The Dumpster Battle, as soon as one team loses it’s all over — and the match can never be replayed.
Sometimes it can be a tall order to make sport exciting, but on the whole, anime excels at perfecting this niche art. From ice skating drama in Yuri On Ice to the aptly named Cheer Boys!, physical exercise comes to life in an entirely new way through these storylines. The most well-known is undoubtedly Haikyu!!, a rambunctious anime about high school basketball.

If the summer box office is ever going to heat up, it’ll have to wait a while longer. In a weekend being led by holdovers, Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” looks to overtake “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” for first place on domestic charts.
The marketplace continues to be dire overall, but Sony is doing well for itself. The studio is also putting out the manga adaptation “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle” through its anime banner Crunchyroll. Playing in 1,086 locations (including showtimes in a few Imax auditoriums), the high school sports film earned $1.9 million across Friday and preview screenings and looks to take sixth place on domestic charts. It’s just the latest example of how anime has found a niche but dedicated theatrical audience in North America. Not that stateside will make or break “Haikyu!!,” which released in its native Japan back in February and stands as the second-highest...

"Haikyuu!!" is one of the biggest anime in the world right now and certainly the biggest sports one — and it's easy to see why. This is the perfect gateway into sports anime, and a show that may make you fall in love with volleyball (even if you have never watched a second of volleyball) thanks to its sense of camaraderie, compelling and memorable characters, and ability to make any volleyball match seem like the most exciting life-or-death game in the world.
After four seasons of high school boys playing volleyball and making audiences emotional, "Haikyuu!!" is heading to its conclusion, with the Karasuno High School Volleyball Club facing the lights and finishing their final tournament together before the seniors graduate. To bring the story to a close, we're getting feature films that finish off the story, much like "The First Slam Dunk" did 30 years after the anime ended.

Keisuke Itagaki did something unexpected when creating Baki Hanma. The series took off like no other, establishing itself as one of the best sports mangas ever. The smooth display of martial arts through both the manga and the anime has fans gripped for decades now. A story that started with the protagonist wanting to become the best in his field, surpassing his own father.

That is not an uncommon trope. Food Wars and Fairy Tail both have similar motivations. In fact, most anime like One Piece, Haikyuu!! and My Hero Academia is driven by the thought of becoming the strongest in their traits. In many ways, all of them stand individually despite their similarities. One plot hole that stands in Baki Hanma, although minor, has a lot to do with Yyujiro Hanma, the protagonist’s father.

Inspiration does not ask before striking, it just does. Anything and everything can become an inspiration if an artist has the perception for it. One Piece is one such work. Inspiration asks not what it can give you but what you can make of it. In a similar way, Eiichiro Oda has set a path for many to follow. He took the road not taken and made the grass greener as he walked.
Nami in One Piece | Credit: Toei Animation
There were many to follow in his path. Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball inspired many, enabling a chain effect of the creation of One Piece, and then those who took inspiration from it. There were many who found themselves taking notes from the Straw Hat Pirates. Out of the many names, the most prominent of them all happens to be Haruichi Furudate, the creator of Haikyuu!!

We often joke about sports anime being overly dramatic with internal monologues that put Shakespeare to shame and overexaggerated reactions that have become memes in the community. Still, that doesn’t make shows like Haikyu!! any less fun to watch. As someone who’s not into sports, Haikyu!! is the first sports anime that made me feel like I was a spectator, cheering from the sidelines and watching with bated breath. From that first episode, I was locked in. What makes sports anime a thrill to watch is characters’ motivations. Not only do we see characters grow but they also come up with the hardest-hitting quotes that should be framed and hung up. Haikyu!! is a gold mine of inspirational quotes, so believe me, I’d include every single one if I could. These, however, are some of the best quotes that resonate with many — myself included — and are a...

The latest addition to Haruichi Furudate’s magnum opus, Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle anime movie is soon going to hit theaters all over the world and hopefully break records just like it did during its initial release in Japan. Haikyu!! has a global audience, and it all started with the first line by the protagonist of the series, Hinata Shoyo.
Haikyu!! by Haruichi Furudate
In the first chapter, when Hinata Shoyo enters his first-ever volleyball match in the gymnasium, he talks about how much he loves the smell of air salonpas that is present in the entire gymnasium. For those who don’t know, air salonpas are painkiller sprays that athletes use to spray on a sprained injury.
Furudate, in one of his interviews, revealed that the first line of Hinata has a deeper meaning than fans realize. It has a direct connection to the excitement Hinata feels as he...

Haikyuu!! is a manga overflowing with optimism. Its protagonist, Hinata Shoyo, is one of the most irritatingly positive people you will ever encounter. Yet, the series’ author, Haruichi Furudate, is the exact opposite of his character.

In sharp contrast to Hinata’s never-ending positivity, Furudate never once thought that anything good could happen. In a 2014 interview, the mangaka opened up about his feelings when Haikyuu!! was first selected for serialization.
Haruichi Furudate Admits His Fears During the Serialization of Haikyuu!!
When Haruichi Furudate received confirmation that his manga about volleyball would be serialized, he was far from happy; in fact, he felt devastated. The job of a voice actor, particularly in the anime world, is not easy. They have to go through every emotion and portray it exactly like the characters in the series. This was experienced by Natsuki Hanae, the voice actor for Tanjiro Kamado in one of the most popular anime and manga series, Demon Slayer.

Hanae has voiced a lot of characters in the anime industry, like Ken Kaneki in Tokyo Ghoul, Korai Hoshiumi in Haikyu!!, Vanitas in The Case Study of Vanitas, Gremmy Thoumeaux in Bleach, etc. But he has earned the most recognition because of his portrayal of Tanjiro, as it is probably his best performance as of yet.

If you've been following Japanese pop culture for years or have an anime enthusiast in your life, you've probably heard of Haikyuu!! Even those who aren't into sports instantly fell in love with the story of a teenager who, despite his short stature, becomes a champion volleyball player.
And now Netflix has announced that all seasons and movies of the anime will be added to its library for American users. The original manga, written and illustrated by Haruichi Furudate, was released in 2012, and the anime began in 2014.
