Bad Boys: Ride or Die may have easily taken the top spot at the box office, but there’s a god and a king that may have something louder to say than Mike and Marcus. Per reports, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has officially become the highest-grossing movie in the MonsterVerse, hitting $570 million worldwide more than 10 weeks after first hitting theaters.
The previous champ of the MonsterVerse was 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, which, according to The Numbers, topped out at $561 million (although Deadline reports it at $568.6 million). The 2014 Godzilla holds at $529 million, while 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters were nowhere near the half billion dollar mark, with the latter having the franchise-low of $383 million.
Godzilla x Kong opened with $80 million domestically, which, while not hitting the mark set by 2014’s Godzilla, was enough to open at #1, a spot it held for its second week as well.

Updated: Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die pummeled pre-weekend opening projections, coming in with a $104.6M global bow, including $48.6M from the international box office. While the overseas debut is slightly off 2020’s Bad Boys for Life which did $50.3M in like-for-like offshore markets at today’s exchange rates, that film had strong legs. Either way, Ride or Die‘s start gave some much needed oomph to summer turnstiles. Its launch is 58% bigger than Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
The Will Smith/Martin Lawrence reteam from directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah was driven overseas by Europe with $19.3M across the region. It set new regional records for the Bad Boys franchise in Latin America and the Middle East with $10M and $9.5M, respectively.
Of the 60 markets released this session, the UK leads with $4.9M (+ 31% over Furiosa). Mexico was next with $4.2M, followed by Germany at $3.7M (2.5x...

While the Marvel side of things struggles to hold on to a strong footing, Disney can go back to developing other franchises in the superhero genre. One of the films that the studio can revive as a major franchise would be the 2005 film, Sky High. It was directed by Kung Fu Panda 4 director Mike Mitchell and starred Michael Angarano and The Flash star Danielle Panabaker in the lead roles.

Mitchell revealed that Disney had plans to develop a sequel film and a spin-off series in the Sky High universe earlier. He even fleshed out concepts for a sequel and shared that he was still interested in working on the project.

After being released earlier this year, Dune: Part Two is still the biggest hit film of the year as of the time of writing, topping the global box office. Fans and critics are very satisfied, and the film promises to be one of the biggest contenders in the upcoming awards season, as Denis Villeneuve produced yet another hit film. The film has so far earned $711,844,358 at the global box office, ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Kung Fu Panda 4, both of which passed the $500 million mark. But, while Dune: Part Two can still be seen in some theaters, it is a movie that premiered almost four months ago (in February). Many new movies have been released in the meantime, but none of them managed to surpass Dune.

Before construction began on DreamWorks Land, the newest addition to Universal Studios Florida, Dean Orion found himself on a typical walk around the grounds of the theme park. As he approached what was then known as the KidsZone — the park’s earliest strategy for catering to their youngest guests with classic IP attractions like Fievel’s Playland, Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster and Curious George Goes to Town — the sound of a child shouting caught his attention.

Exclusive: NBCUniversal (NBCU) Global TV Distribution has struck a content deal with Asian streamer Begin.
According to Begin, this is the first time that NBCU content will be legally watchable in Pakistan, as the U.S. major’s movies and shows have historically been pirated via Pakistani telecoms and internet service providers.
The nascent streamer, which is headquartered in the UAE, backed by Z2C Limited and available in Pakistan, has picked up movies including Oppenheimer, The Holdovers and Kung Fu Panda 4 as part of the multi-year deal. NBCU TV series in the deal include Ted, Based on a True Story and Peacock’s Tattooist of Auschwitz adaptation.
“We know our audiences crave fresh and exciting content, and with exclusive access to NBCUniversal’s biggest hits and new releases, we can’t wait to satisfy their appetite with the best in entertainment,” said Jonathan Mark, Begin’s CEO and Co-Founder.

Nothing comes easy for “The Fall Guy” (Universal). Despite a home release 18 days after opening (typical for Universal) and outgrossing “Civil War” by $4 million despite playing for four weeks less, Alex Garland’s film shares top honors with the stuntman actioner this week on the VOD charts.
Both films, available for rental for 48 hours at $19.99, placed #1 on one chart apiece. “Civil War” leads at iTunes (ranking by transactions), while “Fall Guy” does at Fandango (calculated by revenue). One factor differentiating the two is that “Civil War” was released on Friday, while “Fall” debuted the previous Tuesday. That gave the latter an edge on Fandango, which has a weekly Monday-Sunday chart. It was #1 on iTunes on Wednesday through Friday, with “Civil War” #1 since.
“Fall” of course has been a disappointment in theaters. With a head of steam ahead of opening to excellent reviews, Ryan Gosling momentum, and a prime early May release date,...

The Memorial Day Weekend we’d all like to forget: Any claims to #1 are premature. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (Warner Bros.) and “The Garfield Movie” (Sony) are in a battle for #1 for the four-day holiday, but each only estimates around $25 million for Friday to Sunday. (“Furiosa” is ahead.)
This is a holiday release date often chosen for a film that’s expected to be among the top three of the year. Unadjusted, neither “Furiosa” nor “Garfield” would be among the top 50 openers historically for this particular weekend; adjusting to current ticket prices, not even the top 100.
Current estimates for the four-day weekend are $101 million, but the crisis lies in the whole month. May is supposed to kick off summer and it has failed. It confirms that post- “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” box-office depression has no end in sight.

Fox’s X-Men movies have been integral to bringing the mutants to live-action, laying the groundwork for the live-action debut of several other Marvel characters. While the movies showed that tales of mutants are well-liked by the audience, they are at the same time among the most criticized Marvel movies. From their inconsistent quality to lack of character representation, there are several things fans found an issue with.

Vue Names Ian Fraser As Chair
Former Kwik Fit CEO Ian Fraser is the new Non-Exec Chairman of British cinema chain Vue. He succeeds Stella David, who is exiting to run gambling biz Entail. Fraser is currently working for infrastructure business M Group Services, but is best known as CEO of car servicing business Kwik Fit and COO of Orange UK. He takes up his new post on June 1, leading a non-exec board also including Katrina Cliffe, Henry Birch and Tom Singer and working alongside Vue CEO Tim Richards, CFO Alison Cornwell and COO Matt Eyre. Vue recently underwent a debt restructuring that saw about £50M ($63.5M) of debt converted into equity. This came after The Hollywood labor strikes, which hit cinema operators hard. However, the likes of Dune: Part Two and Kung Fu Panda 4 have helped the sector bounce back in 2024. UK-based Vue has well over 200 multiplexes in Europe and Taiwan.

Released on March 8 this year, Kung Fu Panda 4 has swept the box office with its kung-fu prowess. Starring Jack Black as the clumsy panda turned Dragon Warrior Po, the movie has garnered positive acclaim from both critics and audiences alike. It owes much of its success to the captivating performances of Chameleon ( Viola Davis) and Zhen (Awkwafina) among other characters.

However, many fans noticed that the Furious Five were prominently missing in action in the movie, despite having equally contributed to the franchise’s massive success. Film director Mike Mitchell addressed this in a new interview, reflecting on the factor that led him to let the Furious Five take a back seat in the fourth installment.

A private Disney club is going public. Like, big-screen public.
Club 33, the exclusive dining club inside Disneyland, is getting the movie treatment.
Darren Lemke, who has worked on such family films as Goosebumps starring Jack Black and Shazam!, has been tapped to pen the script set in a fantastical world about the club.
Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Dan Cohen are producing through 21 Laps Entertainment, the prolific banner behind Stranger Things and the recent Holocaust drama All The Light We Cannot See.
The project is said to exude the tone and vibes of Clue and Night at the Museum, Levy’s own fantasy-adventure trilogy set in a museum and featuring exhibits and historical figures to come to life.

It has been a sobering year for the movie industry, particularly when looking at the state of the box office. We entered 2024 knowing it was likely going to be a down year compared to 2023, when domestic ticket sales topped $9 billion for the first time since the pandemic began. Unfortunately, it's been worse than expected. Ticket sales are pacing more than 20% behind this same point in 2023 and there is little hope on the horizon. So, what can be done to provide hope for Hollywood? In short, people need to start going to the movies more. How we get to that point is a big, complicated question for another time. But what would it take to get the box office back to a healthy place in the pandemic era? That's a question we can at least try to tackle.

Disney and 20th Century’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has been going strong since the opening weekend. Garnering overall positive reviews, the movie projected a staggering domestic range. Later, the film even conquered the international box office with $40.6M in its second weekend of release.

However, despite Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ overall success, the movie is anticipated to struggle to join the elite $500M club of 2024, currently led by Dune: Part Two. According to recent box office predictions, since the reboot franchise has managed to generate $237M globally, it is deemed to end its theatrical run with a maximum of $410M. Local blockbuster, “The Roundup: Punishment” extended its dominance of the South Korea theatrical box office for a fourth weekend. That lifted its cumulative total to a powerful $75 million.
“Punishment,” the fourth part of a brutal action comedy film franchise produced by and starring Don Lee (aka Ma Dong-seok), earned $3.05 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). While the film’s week-on-week performance was a 46% decrease, “Punishment” still enjoyed a 36% share of the Korean theatrical market.
After nearly four weeks on release, it has accumulated a total of $75.2 million from 10.7 million admissions. The year’s biggest title to date remains “Exhuma” with $84.8 million earned from 11.9 million ticket sales.
Those two films have dominated proceedings at the Korean box office this year and helped Korea stage a belated recovery in theatrical trends. Both March and April were recent records.

Newcomer If managed to unseat Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes by just $9.0 million to claim the top spot of the box-office weekend.
In its first weekend of release, Paramount Pictures’ If took in $35.0 million, which was enough to wrestle the number one slot away from Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which brought in $26.0 million over the weekend. Despite the slide to second place, the film has still taken in $101.2 million for 20th Century Studios over the last two weeks. Debuting in third place with $12.0 million was the Lionsgate Films offering The Strangers: Chapter 1. All of this pushed last weekend’s number two film, The Fall Guy, to fourth place where it added $8.5 million over the last three days to bring its three-week total to $63.0 million for Universal Pictures. Disney and 20th Century’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” conquered the international box office again with $40.6 million in its second weekend of release.
So far, the fourth chapter in the “Apes” reboot franchise has generated $136 million overseas and $237 million globally. It currently stands as the fourth-highest grossing movie of the year, behind “Kung Fu Panda 4” ($533 million), “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($561 million) and “Dune: Part Two” ($710 million).
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” cost $160 million to produce, so it needs to keep swinging at the box office to justify its price tag. International ticket sales will be key in turning a profit in its theatrical run. Top overseas markets include China with $20.4 million, France with $13.8 million, Mexico with $12 million and the U.K. with $10 million.
In a distant second place, Paramount and director John Krasinski‘s “If,” a fantasy-comedy aimed at young kids, collected $20 million from 58 markets.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Wes Ball, was released earlier this month and is having a splendid time at the box office as well as among critics. The Planet of the Apes franchise has moved forward in time with some new characters. But at the same time, it has managed to keep the nostalgia of the spirit from its previous iterations.

Starring Owen Teague in the lead role, alongside Freya Allan, and Kevin Durand, among others, the movie is making a lot of buzz. Franchise alums like Matt Reeves and Andy Serkis also gave it their stamp of approval with overwhelmingly positive reviews. And talks of a sequel to this new storyline are already making the rounds.

Refresh for latest…: After starting early offshore release on John Krasinski’s If last weekend, Paramount expanded the imaginary friends film to another 56 international box office markets this session. The overseas frame was worth $20M, bringing the international running cume to $24M. With domestic’s $35M debut, the worldwide total is now $59M.
Despite some unfriendly critical scores, If is hearing positive word of mouth which should help playability.
The Krasinski directed/written/produced movie saw terrific uplift on Saturday versus Friday in the majority of offshore majors. It opened at No. 1 in the UK with $3.2M including previews. Staggered school holidays are ahead there. Mexico was a No. 2 start with $2.8M; Australia grossed $2M in a No. 1 launch; Germany picked up $905K at No. 4 with Monday a national holiday and school breaks afoot; Spain was a No. 2 start at $850K.
Other notable openings include Italy ($815K/No. 1), Brazil ($735K/No.

The summer box office is supposed to be the time of year when popular movies can flourish, but this May has not been an ideal start to the season, with another highly anticipated film falling below expectations. Read on for the weekend box office report.
With the general lack of family films in theaters — allowing movies like “Kung Fu Panda 4” and even “Godzilla x Kong” to do very well — Paramount Pictures had very high hopes for John Krasinski‘s “If,” opening it in 4,041 theaters nationwide. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming (with Krasinski in a small role as the latter’s father), the movie received poor to mixed reviews with just 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics not having been swayed by the film’s sweet family-friendly sentimentality.

“If” only made $1.8 million in previews, which were pulled into its opening Friday number of $10.3 million.

2024 has been a great year for movies so far, and it only seems to be getting better. From A24 making history with the Civil War to Wes Ball succeeding in crafting a worthy continuation to the Planet of the Apes trilogy, now it seems, George Miller is too joining in on the fun.
Notable for making one of the greatest action films of all time, his upcoming addition to the Mad Max franchise is set to debut next week. Although Miller set the bar extremely high with Fury Road, following Furiosa‘s score on the Tomatometer, things are looking promising for the prequel.

Since the film is being produced and distributed by Universal, which streamer it will land on is easy to answer; when, however, is more complicated.

Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy came with a lot of expectations. The film was one of the first to bring stunt people, who are some of the hardest workers in Hollywood, to the forefront. It also came with an exceptional cast of actors and was directed by one of the most predominant filmmakers and stuntmen in Hollywood, David Leitch. The same was the case for Henry Cavill’s Argylle, which was set to earn impressive figures.

However, when both of these movies were released, the reactions of the audience were not what the creators expected. While both of these movies earned a considerable amount during their box-office run, they seemed to have failed to top this year’s charts. “If,” a fantasy-comedy from director John Krasinski and star Ryan Reynolds, looks to collect a promising $40 million in its box office debut.
Based on projections, “If” — short for imaginary friends — is tracking to land at least $35 million and as much as $45 million from 4,000 North American theaters. At the higher end of estimates, those ticket sales would mark a solid start for a live-action PG family film that’s not based on an existing property. But the movie cost $110 million, so it’ll need to resonate globally to justify its price tag. Ahead of its domestic release, “If” opened last weekend in two overseas markets, France and Belgium, where it’s earned $3.7 million to date. It lands this week in 56 additional international territories.
Krasinski wrote, directed and stars in “If,” which follows neighbors Cal and Bea (Reynolds and Cailey Fleming) with the ability to see other people’s imaginary friends. While...

Things have begun to pick up at the summer box office, and three new wide releases will try to keep things rolling along. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The big movie this weekend is the latest from director John Krasinski, once again teaming with Paramount Pictures for his family film “If,” starring Ryan Reynolds. “If” stands for “Imaginary Friends” – not to be confused with the recent horror movie “Imaginary” – although this is a family-friendly version of the same general concept, about a little girl named Bea (played by Cailey Fleming) who begins working with Reynold’s character to help pair IFs who have been abandoned by their childhood friends with new kids.
Following his run on “The Office” and directing a couple of indies, Krasinski directed “A Quiet Place” for Paramount in 2018, which opened with $50.2 million and went onto gross $188 million domestic and $334 million globally, based on a $17 million budget.

Jerry Seinfeld’s highly touted (and largely panned) feature directorial debut, “Unfrosted,” spent four days leading Netflix’s top 10 movie chart before another Netflix original, “Mother of the Bride” starring Brooke Shields, took the slot before the thematically appropriate weekend holiday.
“Unfrosted” led for just four days, with “Shrek” from 2001 leading midweek before the debut of “Bride.” The Dreamworks animated classic is still in second place, while Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts comedy dropped to fourth.
“Bride” comes from director Mark Waters. Perhaps best known for his “Freaky Friday” remake and the original “Mean Girls,” Waters went on to direct “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Vampire Academy,” and “Bad Santa 2.” In the new rom-com, Shields is a mom who realizes the father of her future son-in-law broke her heart decades ago.

Even though chatter has died down quite a bit since the movie opened in early April, A24's "Civil War" has managed to do pretty well for itself at the box office. Director Alex Garland's politically-charged view of a future America divided by war has found an audience even as bigger movies like "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," "The Fall Guy," and now "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" have entered the marketplace. So much so that it now ranks as A24's second-biggest movie of all time at the global box office, and only the company's second title to cross the $100 million mark.
In its fifth weekend of release, "Civil War" added $1.8 million domestically to its growing total. It stayed in the top ten, coming in just above the re-release of "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" ($1.5 million) and just below "Kung Fu Panda 4" ($1.82 million). That...

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opened in second place at the South Korean weekend box office, a distance behind local holdover title “The Roundup: Punishment.”
“Punishment,” the fourth part of Don Lee’s “Roundup” action franchise, dominated proceedings for the third weekend in succession. It earned $5.53 million and advanced its cumulative total to $67.7 million, according to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Its earnings represented a still strong 58% share of the weekend theatrical market, but they were also down by 60% week-on-week, suggesting that “Punishment” may not reach the heights of the previous franchise elements.
In 2022, “The Roundup” earned $95.7 million (using current rates of currency exchange), while last year “The Roundup: No Way Out” earned $76.3 million.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” recorded $2.45 million between Friday and Sunday with a 26% market share. Over its full five-day opening in Korea, the film earned $3.10 million from 415,000 ticket sales.

The annual celebration of Mom brightened things up at the summer box office, with the first movie to open over $50 million since March. Read on for the weekend box office report.
The hopes for the summer box office were almost dashed by the poor showing of season opener “The Fall Guy” last weekend, so fortunately, this weekend didn’t follow suit. Of course, the big winner for the weekend was 20th Century’s franchise sequel “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” which came into the weekend with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 80% Fresh, on par with “The Fall Guy.”
After making $6.6 million in Wednesday and Thursday previews and $22.2 million on Friday (including those previews), Disney has estimated “Apes” to open with $56.5 million, which is slightly higher than the $56.2 million opening for “War for the Planet of the Apes” in 2017.
