One of George Miller's films, "Lorenzo's Oil," opens with an epigram reading as follows: "Life has meaning only in the struggle. Triumph or defeat is in the hands of the Gods ... so let us celebrate the struggle!" Celebrating the struggle may seem paradoxical in life or in cinema, but that concept runs through just about every one of Miller's films, created over the course of four decades. From post-apocalyptic action fantasies to deliriously twisted family fare, Miller has never been too boxed in with the films he's made. Through his filmography, George Miller has done everything from introducing one of cinema's biggest action stars to depicting a sea of penguins dancing to pop music. As weird as those extremes may be, it somehow all makes sense. With the arrival of Miller's latest entry in the "Mad Max" franchise, "Furiosa," in theaters now, let's rank all of Miller's films.

It’s been nine years since we said goodbye to Robin Williams, who left behind a highlight reel of hilarious scenes and moments of impassioned drama. And no compilation would be complete without any number of clips from 1993’s Mrs. Doubtfire, which, probably for the better, never got a sequel despite being a hit with audiences, proving to be the #2 movie worldwide that year behind Jurassic Park.
As director Chris Columbus put it, “It’s an interesting thing. Back then, there was an attitude that sequels were looked down upon by the artists. So Robin was against doing a sequel immediately after.” Perhaps surprisingly, Williams only ever did a few sequels in his entire career: a Dtv Aladdin one, Happy Feet Two and a pair for Night at the Museum.

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

Bet you weren’t expecting the eyebrow-raising TV news of the day to involve a new adaptation of beloved children’s author Enid Blyton’s Famous Five series. But the surprising twist in the BBC’s announcement today didn’t concern the bestselling series of whimsical, jolly-hockey-sticks children’s adventure novels from the 1940s-1960s – rather the creator behind this new series: Nicolas Winding Refn.
Considering this Danish director is famous for stylish but graphically violent films like The Neon Demon, Only God Forgives and Drive, The Famous Five will be somewhat of a left turn for him.
The series will have three 90-minute episodes drawing on Blyton’s 21 Famous Five novels, which detailed the adventures of five daring young explorers – Julian, Dick, Anne, George and their dog Timmy – as they spend their school holidays gallivanting around the English countryside and coastline, solving mysteries, finding treasure and catching criminals. Warren Coleman, who co-directed George Miller’s 2006 animated Oscar-winning smash hit Happy Feet, is set to direct live-action family adventure feature Stripey.
The film — currently in development — follows a single-parent family of refugees from Kashmir, a long-thought-extinct Tasmanian tiger and a colorful bunch of bush characters. It tells the story of what happens when they all collide.
Coleman, who co-wrote both Happy Feet and its sequel Happy Feet Two, wrote Stripey alongside Australian writer and comedian Steve Abbot (behind the popular radio and TV character The Sandman).
“What really got us into this story that we kept coming back to was this simple idea about what would happen if some of the newest people in Australia crossed paths with one of the very oldest creatures we have, which isn’t even supposed to exist anymore,” Coleman tells The Hollywood Reporter, adding that, while supposedly extinct (the last official one died...

Summer is about to finally, blessedly be in full swing. And to honor the occasion, Hulu is showing up big with its list of new releases for June 2022.
Hulu is bringing two major TV titles to its stream this month. The first is The Orville: New Horizons on June 2. Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi/comedy started as a simple Star Trek parody on Fox before blossoming into its own entirely sincere space adventuring beast. Now “New Horizons” promises to be a fresh start for the series on Hulu. Next up is Only Murders in the Building season 2 on June 28. Season 1 of this Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-starring series was a big hit. Let’s see if our favorite podcasters can pull it off once again.

With a new month upon us, that means Netflix is saying farewell to some favorite films in their library for the time being. And this month, there’s an unusual amount of good movies leaving Netflix. If you’re wondering what to watch before it’s gone, we’ve got a handy guide.
Fans of period dramas and family films, in particular, may find themselves with a lot to catch up on before it leaves Netflix. In the former category, films like “Howard’s End,” “Lawless,” “A River Runs Through It,” “Bright Star,” and “Braveheart” are all expiring in March.
But the Kids and Family section is taking a particularly big hit this month. Animated departures include “Kung Fu Panda,” “Despicable Me” and “Despicable Me 2,” “Happy Feet Two,” a handful of “Pokemon!” movies and series, and meme culture favorite “Bee Movie.” There are also several live-action family classics leaving Netflix in March as well,...

Do not adjust your WiFi settings. No, you are not experiencing a severe case of Deja Streaming-vu. HBO Max’s list of new releases for May 2021 are indeed highlighted by two very recent WarnerMedia hits.

Are you one of those people who sees all of the hoopla surrounding HBO content but never gets to play along?
Has adding another pay-tv option to your already overburdened entertainment fiscal responsibilities left you in the dark when it comes to HBO?
Have you unwisely chosen to spend your money on less critically acclaimed and lower quality content to get more bang for your buck?
Well, we have good news for you.
HBO knows you're a captive audience, and they're betting that once you get a taste of their popular and lauded entertainment that you might want to make it a more permanent thing.
Of course, that's my assessment, and I'd recommend HBO in a heartbeat. I have, and I will continue slathering praise on the network that has provided some of my all-time favorite content.
And now, you (that's You who don't have HBO), too, can find out...

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in March 2020.
March 2020 is an extremely HBO month for HBO.
What we mean by that is that the list of new releases for the month contain a lot of the hallmarks of the HBO brand that the network has built over the years. There is the third season of an expensive and popular sci-fi series with Westworld season 3 premiering on March 15. Then there's also the requisite new David Simon series when Philip Roth adaptation The Plot Against America premieres on March 16.
If that weren't enough, March 2020 sees the arrival of a big ticket superhero movie with X-Men: Dark Phoenix arriving on March 21. It's not a good big ticket superhero movie, but still! You may want to rewatch it all the same. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is a sort of superhero movie itself.

To this day, Robin Williams remains a comedy icon, and even though he is gone, the legacy of his film work lives on. That legacy is a large part of the new documentary “Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind,” which is currently showing and streaming on HBO. Equally adept at outrageous comedy and sensitive drama, Williams was a one-of-a-kind performer, one whose unique style will likely never be equaled. He tragically died on August 11, 2014.
After success as a stand-up comic and television stardom via “Mork and Mindy,” Williams turned to film and achieved success far beyond what his TV success could have indicated. He won an Academy Award for “Good Will Hunting” (1997), one of four Oscar nominations he earned in his career. Williams also earned two Screen Actors Guild Awards (for 1996’s “The Birdcage” and “Good Will Hunting”) and received nine Golden Globe nominations, winning statues for 1987’s “Good Morning, Vietnam,...

Told with a lovely romantic sweep and full of raw, honest emotion, this is a gay love story that’s also just a great love story, full stop. Yay. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

Australian filmmaker will award the Palme d’or at the close of the Festival.
Mad Mad director George Miller is to preside over the jury of the 69th Cannes Film Festival (May 11-22), capping a successful 12 months for the Australian filmmaker.

The action reboot, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, was shown Out of Competition to critical acclaim and has been picking up awards ever since. It is nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture, and seven Baftas.
Miller said: “What an unmitigated delight. To be there in the middle of this storied festival at the unveiling of cinematic treasures from all over the planet. To spend time in passionate discourse with fellow members of the jury. Such an honor. I’ll be there with bells on.”

Every day, more and more films are added to the various streaming services out there, ranging from Netflix to YouTube, and are hitting the airwaves via movie-centric networks like TCM. Therefore, sifting through all of these pictures can be a tedious and often times confounding or difficult ordeal. But, that’s why we’re here. Every week, Joshua brings you five films to put at the top of your queue, add to your playlist, or grab off of VOD to make your weekend a little more eventful. Here is this week’s top five, in this week’s Armchair Vacation.
5. Para Elisa (VOD)
With Halloween coming in a little over a month, horror films are at a premium. With more and more thrillers and chillers cropping up across the film world, few of them are as small scale and generally discussed as writer/director Juanra Fernandez’s Para Elisa. A...

Exclusive: Animation sells to Middle East, Asia, Africa.
Family-animation Elliot: The Littlest Reindeer has sold to Middle East, Asia and African markets for Double Dutch International.
Currently in production from director Paul Griffin, lead animator on Happy Feet Two and Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, the film has sold to South Korea (GreenNarae), Middle East (Salim Ramia & Co.), Vietnam (Skyline Media) and South Africa (NuMetro).
Previously reported sales include Splendid in Germany and Benelux and Freeman Entertainment, Monolith and Blitz for Eastern Europe.
In Elliot: The Littlest Reindeer, a miniature horse has three days to fulfil his lifelong dream of earning a spot on Santa’s sleigh during the North Pole Try-Outs.
“The continuing sales at this early stage of production shows how globally appealing the story of Elliot is,” said Double Dutch president Jason Moring.

After I walked out of Mad Max: Fury Road over the weekend, I was impressed by a lot of things. The performances, namely Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. The absolutely insane practical effects that were filmed in-camera. The fact the film was made by a man whose last three directorial credits include Babe: Pig in the City, Happy Feet and Happy Feet Two. Don't get me wrong, I like dancing penguins and city-dwelling pigs as much as everybody else, maybe more, but let's agree the War Rig in Mad Max: Fury Road takes viewers on a ride that those animals, cute as they are, simply cannot. Perhaps two of the biggest highlights of the film, however, are its stunning attention to detail and the way it embraces the world around it, to the point its world doesn't feel created so much as it just exists. There is a sense of...

Astonishing. Achieves its grotesque, magnificent brutality in an old-fashioned way that serves as a smackdown to bloated, sterile CGI monstrosities. I’m “biast” (pro): big sci-fi fan; love Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Bubbling up in conversations I’ve had with other critics and film fans recently has been a recurring debate: What is the future of the action movie? Where can the genre go from the bloated, calculated CGI monstrosities it has been vomiting up lately? (Even the mostly enjoyable ones seem to culminate in frenetic cartoons of stuff whizzing around banging into other stuff in ways that barely even register with the eye, and which seems deliberately designed to be incoherent.) Actually, it’s not even a debate, really: no one seems to have any idea where action might move, and most likely,...

Hot on the heels of its mega-announcement that nine DC blockbusters will follow Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and be in theaters by 2020, Warner Bros. has further filled out its schedule by slotting two additional animated films, ones insiders say are part of the Lego franchise. Though it must be stressed that only the dates – May 25, 2018, and May 24, 2019 – have been announced, The Lego Movie is the only lucrative, animated franchise that the studio currently has.
It makes sense that Warner Bros. would want to expand its Lego property as quickly as possible, seeing as the studio has lacked a sturdy foothold in animation for some time (2010′s Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole failed to launch a franchise, and 2011′s Happy Feet Two was also Doa at the box office). The Lego Movie grossed $468 million, a terrific sum for any blockbuster, let alone an animated one.

- We Got This Covered
This year we’ve already heard about The Lego Movie being anti-capitalist (even though it’s the opposite) and Frozen having a gay agenda (I can neither confirm nor deny this, as I still haven’t seen it), so it’s surprising that the conservative media hasn’t also jumped at the chance to denounce Rio 2 for its tree-hugging liberal propaganda. Maybe after piling on The Muppets, The Lorax, Cars 2, Happy Feet Two and others they’re tired of pointing out that basically every family film seems to them as leaning left. Or maybe, as Matt Patches argues disappointedly in his Fighting In the War Room podcast review, the message of Rio 2 is not direct enough to reach the young viewers because it implies the birds are fighting deforestation in the Amazon just fine on their own. Either way, I invite the Right to join me this week in recognizing the 30th anniversary of...

How do you shoot characters based on 3 cm high Lego bricks in a 3D animated adventure movie?
That was the challenge facing cinematographer and layout supervisor Pablo Plaisted and the creative team on The Lego Movie.
The team led by writers-directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street) came up with some innovative solutions.
.The directors wanted the movie to look like stop-motion rather than CGI,. Plaisted tells If on the line from the Us where he is taking a break after attending the premiere in Los Angeles last Saturday.
.CG cameras can look rather smooth and weightless. We roughed the camera up to make it feel big and heavy and to emphasise the tiny Lego figures..
Plaisted grew up with Lego and says he learned how to be creative playing Lego as a kid with his mother. He spent two years on the film,...
