For the first time ever, a film streaming on Netflix (free for subscribers) and available on VOD ($5.99 for 48 hours) is #1 on both charts.
Toho’s late-2023 sleeper success and eventual Oscar Visual Effects winner, “Godzilla Minus One” achieved that feat with a totally unexpected and previously unannounced release on Saturday.
The film, released in early December to an unexpected U.S./Canada gross of $56 million, normally would have hit PVOD for rental for $19.99 by late January, been reduced to $5.99 after a few weeks, then found a streaming home. But because of vaguely defined agreements with Legendary Entertainment, Toho’s partner in making Warner Bros.’ costlier Godzilla films, the March opening of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” led to the early-February termination of theatrical dates for “Minus One.” That came despite the Toho film still doing business (and ahead of the Oscars). Then, Warner’s “Godzilla x Kong” could play without “Minus One” as competition.

There’s something special about bloodbath movies: they’re really easy to mess up, making carnage the main character instead of the actual protagonist, but they’re also hauntingly captivating when done right. Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill is often dubbed as the ultimate bloodbath action, but what if we replaced the Bride with the Boy and changed the modern world for a post-apocalyptic one? Would it still work?

Bill Skarsgård is following the legacy of his father and legendary Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård who appeared in MCU and the Dune franchise. Following his Hollywood debut in 2016 with Robert Schwentke’s sci-fi thriller Allegiant in The Divergent Series, Skarsgård made his breakthrough with Andrés Muschietti’s two-part horror thriller It.

Boy Kills World is one of many box office victims from this year. However, after its April release, Lionsgate is preparing to bring the mayhem home in crisp clarity on July 9 as the Bill Skarsgård actioner has been announced to have a 4K UltraHD Blu-ray release, courtesy of Blu-ray.com. The film had a pretty warm, but mediocre reception, getting a 59% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 72% audience score. But our own Chris Bumbray was grinning ear-to-ear with it, saying in his review, “The movie itself is a pretty wild, dystopian action epic with heavy doses of black comedy and outrageousness mixed in. Challengers failed to repeat as the top film of the box-office weekend as newcomer The Fall Guy easily claimed first place by a margin of $20.4 million. Universal Pictures enjoyed dominance over the box-office weekend top ten as the studio sported three films in the weekend’s list.
Claiming first place was The Fall Guy with $28.5 million, easily besting the second-place film, the re-release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace which took in $8.1 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. This pushed last weekend’s top film, Challengers, to a third place finish where it added $7.6 million, raising its two-week total to $29.5 million for United Artists Releasing. Screen Gems, meanwhile, enjoyed the debut of Tarot in fourth place where it managed to bring in $6.5 million for the studio. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was consequently dropped two spots where it claimed fifth place with $4.5 million over the weekend.

How "Boy Kills World" Struck a Chord Despite Its Chaotic Setting In Moritz Mohr's dystopian action film "Boy Kills World," we witness an interesting blend of darkness and humor. In an alternate universe, a young boy is raised by an off-the-grid shaman to become a lethal weapon trained to take down the family responsible for a totalitarian regime. When the boy (Bill Skarsgård) gets older, he takes it upon himself to go after the head of the family Hilda Van der Koy (Famke Janssen) — the woman responsible for killing his mother and sister when he was a child.
When you are a director who has no feature film credits to your name, the cinematic world is your oyster. Neither having to live up to a previously built reputation nor giving over to the commercial industry, anything is possible — and Moritz Mohr proves this is still true in Boy Kills World. Pennywise is back! However, instead of wearing the scary make-up and clown outfit, Bill Skarsgard is on the hunt for revenge in this new and exciting thriller. Below is the official synopsis for Boy Kills World: Bill Skarsgård stars as “Boy” who vows revenge after his family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy (Famke Janssen), the deranged matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty that left the boy orphaned, deaf, and voiceless. Weathering an unusual path to theaters, Bill Skarsgård’s recently released Boy Kills World witnessed a rough start at the box office. With Lionsgate/Roadside distributing the film and Nthibah Pictures financing it, Moritz Mohr’s movie about a deaf and mute fighter named Boy, who vowed his family’s revenge, suffered a major blow during the opening weekend.
Bill Skarsgård as Boy in Moritz Mohr’s Boy Kills World
Kicking off with a rather slow opening, below its original $2M projections, Boy Kills World failed to impress audiences and critics. Hammerstone Studios producer Alex Lebovici grieved that despite a massive production budget and significant marketing, the movie failed to sustain. Meanwhile, fans on X appear to blame Studios for its failure.

It was a very interesting weekend at the box office here in the United States. While the Sam Raimi-produced action-thriller Boy Kills World failed to make a splash and Radio Silence’s hugely entertaining vampire movie Abigail continues to make far less money than it deserves, two genre movies from the distant past managed to make their own mark on the charts.
Both Ridley Scott’s 1979 horror classic Alien and the Brendan Fraser-starring action-horror movie The Mummy (1999) were re-released into theaters, the former film celebrating its 45th anniversary and the latter movie returning to theaters for its 25th anniversary.
Which film came out on top, you might be wondering? The original Alien won this particular battle, coming in at #11 on the weekend charts. The Mummy currently sits in the #14 spot.
While Alien scared up $1,563,000 in its re-release weekend and The Mummy pulled in a bit less at $1,040,000, it...

Kev may be doing some training for his new job but he had to take a minute to drop his review of the new Moritz Mohr directed Boy Kills World, which stars Bill Skarsgaard, Yayan Ruhian, Famke Jansen, Sharlto Copley, Bert Gelmann and many more.
Get ready for the most gleefully supercharged action film you’ll see all year. Bill Skarsgård stars as Boy, a deaf-mute with a vivid imagination, driven by his inner voice, one which he co-opted from his favourite childhood video game. He avows revenge after his family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy, the deranged matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty that left the boy orphaned, deafened, and voiceless. Boy trains with a mysterious shaman to become an instrument of death and is set loose on the eve of the annual culling of dissidents. Bedlam ensues as Boy commits bloody martial arts mayhem, inciting a wrath of carnage and bloodletting.

After two weeks atop the box-office weekend, Civil War was pushed from the number one spot (and then some) and replaced by Challengers which took first place by a margin of $7.2 million.
In its first weekend of release, the United Artists Releasing product starring Zendaya, Challengers debuted in first place with a total of $15.0 million. This was enough to easily best second-place finisher Unsung Hero which debuted with a total of $7.8 million earned for Lionsgate Films. Meanwhile, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire held its ground at number three where it added $7.2 million over its fifth weekend in release to bring its overall total for Warner Bros. to $181.7 million. All of this pushed last weekend’s top film, Civil War, to fourth place where it took in $7.0 million for A24, giving the film a three-week total of $56.2 million. James Bond is the epitome of a cool and collected gentleman. From Sean Connery’s sophistication to Daniel Craig’s intensity, each actor who’s donned the tuxedo has brought their own unique charm to the iconic role of 007.

But with Craig’s final outing as Bond in “No Time to Die,” rumors have run rampant about who will take up the mantle next. While speculation has floated around various actors, some believe it’s high time for a shakeup. This includes the possibility of a female Bond, as an actress has now offered herself for the role.

Daniel Craig’s epic run as Bond has come to a fitting end and the question of who will inherit the role has sparked a debate.

Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” (Amazon MGM) nearly doubled any other gross in its opening weekend, taking an easy #1 with an estimated $15 million. That’s respectable for the Zendaya-starring erotic tennis drama.
However, another week with this level of a #1 film isn’t what theaters need. After a month of intriguing new releases, none of them are likely to gross as much as $75 million in the U.S./Canada. Theaters faced a double burden — too few films released, and too few perform — but May could be different: It starts the summer season next week with “The Fall Guy” (Universal).
“Challengers” was not an automatic sell. It has Zendaya and excellent reviews (83 Metacritic score). Recent R-rated, sexually charged dramas are unusual these days. “Saltburn,” also from Amazon MGM, grossed $11 million in its release — $4 million less than the “Challengers” opening. “No Hard Feelings” with Jennifer Lawrence had the same opening gross last summer.

April came to a close with a number of smaller releases, ahead of the start of the summer movie season launching in May, though one movie definitely stood out ahead of the others. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Luca Guadagnino‘s tennis romance, “Challengers,” starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, opened in 3,477 theaters on Friday with solid reviews, racking up $1.9 million in previews from Thursday and earlier. After pulling in $6.2 million on Friday (including previews), “Challengers” won the weekend with ease, making an estimated $15 million, and receiving a fair “B+” CinemaScore from audiences polled, as the movie became the talk of social media all weekend. “Challengers” also added another $9 million overseas in 52 markets to bring its global total to $25 million.

It’s happened before, and it will happen again. Sometimes, a movie plays a film fest, gets picked up by a studio, and is changed. That’s exactly what happened to Boy Kills World, a movie I saw (and enjoyed) at TIFF’s Midnight Madness. The film had a pretty dire opening at the box office this weekend, barely cracking the top 10. But the cut folks saw (or didn’t) this weekend was not the same as what I saw originally at TIFF back in September.
So what’s different? If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll know that the entire film is narrated by Bill Skarsgard’s “Boy” character (who is deaf and mute) via his interior monologue. However, Skarsgard himself doesn’t provide the voice-over, which H. Jon Benjamin of Archer fame does. The conceit is that the narration is the last voice “Boy” heard before going deaf,...

As expected, Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers scored an easy win this weekend, with a $15 million weekend, just a touch softer than we predicted earlier this week. The tennis-cantered love triangle was no doubt boosted by Zendaya’s star power, with her hotter than ever in the wake of Dune: Part Two’s blockbuster showing this winter. IMAX screens were dominated by Zendaya in one form or another, with both Challengers and Dune 2 playing in the format this weekend thanks to the latter’s re-release.
Notably, the film posted Guadagnino’s best box office opening to date, with the weekend total more than doubling the total take of his previous biggest opener, Bones and All. It’ll be interesting to see if Challengers can hold up in the coming weeks, with The Fall Guy opening next weekend and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes opening the weekend after. With...

Moritz Mohr’s debut feature Boy Kills World is probably the best of the action offerings people have witnessed in recent years. Released on April 26, the action movie starring Jessica Rothe and Bill Skarsgård follows the story of a deaf and mute orphan who seeks revenge for his family’s murder.
Jessica Rothe as June 27 in Boy Kills World (2024)
While the film majorly focused on Bill Skarsgård as the lead, Jessica Rothe stole eyes with her phenomenal action sequences as June 27, an enforcer working for the Van Der Koys. Certainly, Rothe’s role demanded her to go through extreme training to convincingly become the ultimate fighter in the film. The actress therefore revealed learning 17 forms of Martial Arts in preparation for her role.

Plot: A deaf and mute warrior (Bill Skarsgård) raised by a mysterious shaman (The Raid’s Yayan Ruhian) attempts to topple a repressive regime.
Review: Last year, Bill Skarsgård played a suave villain in Keanu Reeves’ John Wick: Chapter 4, but notably stayed out of the action scenes. Had the movie been released after Boy Kills World, I think the part would have been radically reimagined, with the actor putting himself through the kind of physical transformation that changes careers. Watching the hulking, 6’3 actor blast his way through opponents in Boy Kills World, it’s hard to believe that the same guy, just a few years ago, was best known as Pennywise the Clown. Indeed, Boy Kills World is the perfect launchpad for Bill Skarsgård to become a major action hero (it bodes well for his next film – the remake of The Crow).

“Challengers” netted a $6.2 million opening day from 3,477 North American theaters, a figure that includes $1.9 million from preview screenings. Amazon MGM Studios’ love-triangle drama is set to match industry projections for a $15 million debut. The tennis film also gets extra revenue from tickets for premium large-format auditoriums, including some Imax screens.
The Zendaya starrer will easily launch above the competition to claim the top spot on domestic charts — not small potatoes for an original, R-rated drama in the age of studio IP addiction. But “Challengers” does carry a $55 million production budget, so it’ll have to keep rallying into the summer months to score a profit in theaters. Reviews have been stellar, while early ticket buyers lean positive with audience survey firm Cinema Score tallying a “B+” grade. Amazon MGM has good buzz on its side for the weeks ahead.

As we predicted earlier this week, Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers is set to lead the box office this weekend, with Deadline reporting that it’s on track for a $15 million opening. While that’s a bit below the $17 million we forecasted for the film, that’s still a decent start for a character-driven drama, with the Zendaya-led film an Amazon-MGM production that’s set for an eventual debut on Prime Video. Indeed, the studio has had a lot more luck with launching their fare theatrically than many of their competitors, with Challengers opening similarly to Air and The Beekeeper, both Amazon-mgm movies whose theatrical success paved the way to big streaming numbers.

Happy Death Day was a huge success for Blumhouse, grossing $125 million on a budget of just $4.8 million. The sequel didn’t quite hit those same numbers, but it still did well enough that fans were expecting to see Happy Death Day 3. Well, it’s been five years and not much has happened, despite writer/director Christopher Landon working on the script and star Jessica Rothe eager to return.
While speaking with ScreenGeek, Jessica Rothe gave a hopeful update regarding Happy Death Day 3.
“Well, I can say Chris Landon has the whole thing figured out,” Rothe said. “We just need to wait for Blumhouse and Universal to get their ducks in a row. But my fingers are so crossed. Five-plus years following the launch of his film financing and production company, Hammerstone Studios, producer Alex Lebovici finds himself at “a big turning point.” After working for years on “building block” projects that held little to no interest for him on the level of story, he’s been able of late to assemble an increasingly packed studio slate, devoting himself solely to making the “fun, commercial, star-driven films” he likes to watch.
Breaking out in September 2022 with the buzzy horror thriller Barbarian, underscoring the company’s commitment to fresh genre fare with big, original ideas, Hammerstone is looking to recapture the zeitgeist this weekend with Boy Kills World, an action thriller starring Barbarian‘s Bill Skarsgård. Directed by Moritz Mohr, the film has him playing Boy, who vows revenge after his family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy (Famke Janssen), the deranged matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty that...

We’ve been talking about a potential Happy Death Day 3 for several years now, with the ball in producer Jason Blum’s court. Happy Death Day 2U scared up $64 million at the worldwide box office, a far cry from the first film’s $125 million. But with a reported production budget of just $9 million, that first sequel was profitable for Blumhouse. So again… where is it?!
