To most people, Michael Jackson‘s “Bad” is simply a cool pop song. Meanwhile, Quincy Jones felt it was divinely inspired. He discussed the creative process behind one of the King of Pop’s greatest albums.
Quincy Jones said he didn’t work on Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ for the money
During a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone, Jones was asked if he had a vision for the songs from Jackson’s Bad. “That’s not the way it works,” he replied. “You go song by song. The songs are the power. They take it home.
“From what I learned, the melody is the voice of God,” he added. That’s what you look for. I have never ever made records for money or fame. That’s how you blow it. ‘Cause God walks out of the room if you’re going after money. And you don’t know how to...

Michael Jackson‘s “Bad” and Ghostbusters are two quintessential elements of 1980s popular culture. With that in mind, it only makes sense that “Bad” has a connection to Ray Parker Jr.’s theme song for the first Ghostbusters movie. Notably, a famous musician discussed his experience working with the King of Pop on the album Bad.
The similarity between Ray Parker Jr.’s ‘Ghostbusters’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’
Jackson made history when five of the singles from his album Bad topped the Billboard Hot 100. Those songs were “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Dirty Diana,” “Man in the Mirror,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” and the album’s title track. The latter might be the most famous song from the album today, partially due to its epic music video.

Part of why Michael Jackson‘s “Man in the Mirror” is so powerful is that the King of Pop had an incredible singing voice. Despite that, he was trying to sound like another 1980s singer. That singer revealed what she thought when she learned Jackson was trying so hard to sound like her.
The writer of Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror’ tells her story
Siedah Garrett co-wrote “Man in the Mirror,” which might be Jackson’s most famous ballad. During an interview with Blue Railroad, Garrett said that Jackson wanted to sound like Garrett when he recorded the song. “That was such a high compliment,” Garrett said. “We’d finished the part we had to fix on the duet so I was getting ready to leave. I was packing up and he said, ‘Where you goin?’ I said, ‘Aren’t we done? Isn’t this history, dude?’

Michael Jackson‘s Bad includes many of his most impressive songs. The writer of one of the album’s songs said it came from God. That’s fascinating, considering that the music video for the tune includes images of some of the most famous religious leaders who ever lived.
Michael Jackson knew a song from ‘Bad’ came from God even though nobody told him that
“Man in the Mirror” was co-written by Siedah Garrett. Grett might be most known for duetting with the King of Pop on his hit ballad “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You.” During an interview with Blue Railroad, she said “Man in the Mirror” came from God. Despite this, she didn’t directly tell Jackson about its origins.
“My answer to him was that ‘I asked for it,'” she said. “I didn’t mention God because I didn’t know where he was as far as religion goes.

Michael Jackson‘s “Smooth Criminal” is Satanic. It’s not a song about Satan or the occult, but it is a song about a Satanist. The King of Pop worried this could cause controversy for multiple reasons. “Smooth Criminal” wasn’t one of the biggest hits from that era of Jackson’s career, but it produced a hit cover.
Michael Jackson’s ‘Smooth Criminal’ was inspired by a killer who worshipped Satan
Jermaine Jackson was a member of The Jackson 5. In his 2011 book You Are Not Alone: Michael, Through a Brother’s Eyes, Jermaine noted the Al Capone theme of the “Smooth Criminal” video. “‘Smooth Criminal’ was actually inspired by a serial killer who spread fear throughout Los Angeles and San Francisco between 1984 and 1985,” Jermaine wrote.
“Richard Ramirez, a self-confessed devil worshipper, was the ‘Night Stalker’ who took 14 lives,” he added. “In most cases, he forced his way into people...

Michael Jackson‘s biggest hits were all inspired by one style of music — and it’s not pop. It’s not even modern. One of the other members of The Jackson 5 explained the King of Pop’s “scientific” approach to songwriting.
Michael Jackson’s brother explained what he was thinking when he wrote his biggest hits
Jermaine Jackson was a member of The Jackson 5. In his 2011 book You Are Not Alone: Michael, Through a Brother’s Eyes, Jermaine had great insight into his brother’s musical compositions. The King of Pop felt music was a “science” and he wanted to study it the same way that scientists study DNA. Jermaine revealed that the “Thriller” singer tried to listen to classical pieces as much as possible in order to study their compositions. He also felt that different pieces had different “colors” and he discussed these colors with his brother.

Michael Jackson‘s “Beat It” proved that the King of Pop could be the King of Rock when he wanted to be. While “Beat It” has an iconic music video, it isn’t Jackson’s best rock tune. It might not even be his second-best rock tune. Here’s a look at Jackson, the rock star.
Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’ isn’t as good as ‘Give In to Me’
“Beat It” is musically violent, but it’s a song about pacifism. That’s an oddball choice if there ever was one. When John Lennon sang about nonviolence, he wrote folk ditties and pop ballads. Meanwhile, Jackson tries to instill peace, love, and understanding in his listeners while hitting them over the head with Eddie Van Halen’s guitar. In its own strange way, “Beat It” works beautifully, but it’s hard to accept Jackson as the sort of person...

One Michael Jackson song seems to be about a regular friendship. It’s actually about a friendship with a killer rat. Jackson revealed how this tune came together so fast, even though he struggled with a lot of self-doubt.
1 Michael Jackson song was the theme for a horror film
Listen to any of Jackson’s songs, and it’s clear he put lots of effort into his music. Even when he didn’t write or produce his music, his voice was impeccable. All these years later, he rhymes one of pop music’s best singers.
During a 1980 interview posted to Blank on Blank, Jackson said he was a perfectionist, but that didn’t mean he always worked slowly. “I do vocals pretty quick,” he explained. “But for instance ‘Ben,’ I did in one take. I went right in and cut it.” For context, “Ben” is a ballad about a killer...

The Weeknd has another record to add to his trophy shelf.
Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, 33, has achieved the prestigious title of the highest-grossing tour for a Black musician with his After Hours Till Dawn tour, a record held by the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson’s 1987 Bad tour for almost 35 years.
The Weeknd’s tour began in 2022 and has already made a killing, generating more than $350 million in revenue. Jackson’s tour managed to gross a wildly impressive $311 million after adjusting for inflation, per Hot New Hip Hop.

Thirteen of Michael Jackson‘s songs reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Some of those songs are incredible. On the other hand, one of them is about a killer rat.
Michael Jackson | Chris Walter / Contributor 13. ‘Ben’
“Ben” is a ballad about a killer rat that became Jackson’s first solo No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was from the film Ben, the sequel to the killer rat movie Willard. The ballad is more of a weird piece of trivia than a real song.
12. ‘I Just Can’t Stop Loving You’ with Siedah Garrett
Jackson dabbled in numerous genres. Sadly, he wasn’t able to elevate easy-listening music with “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You.” While this was a No. 1 single during Jackson’s peak period, it doesn’t have an accompanying music video.
11. ‘Say Say Say’

Antoine Fuqua is keeping things close-knit for his upcoming Michael Jackson biopic. According to Deadline, Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, will play the King of Pop in the Fuqua-directed film. Fuqua confirmed Jackson’s inclusion through Instagram. Fuqua’s social media update includes a photo of Jaafar dancing in a private studio with wall-to-wall mirrors. In the image, Jaafar is wearing Jackson’s signature black shoes made from Florsheim Imperial leather and a black fedora. Jaafar is striking a classic M.J. pose as he evaluates his moves from every angle.

Exclusive: Evan Peters, one of Ryan Murphy’s go-to actors, is set as the title character in Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, a Netflix limited series co-created by longtime collaborators Murphy and Ian Brennan, Deadline has learned. Public intrigue in the Weeknd’s dark music has officially lasted a decade. Over the weekend, the once-mysterious chart-topper re-released his 2011 debut mixtape House of Balloons in celebration of its 10th anniversary. It arrived as a reminder of a particular moment in recent history. From the start, the Weeknd was destined to experiment with genre and form. House of Balloons wasn’t even intended to be an R&b project, as it’s often thought of — likely because it was coming from a Black man with a delicate voice. In reality,...

Podcast content studio Qcode, known for adapting series with A-list talent for film and TV, raised $6.4 million in a Series A funding round led by Sonos with participation by C Ventures.
Qcode, in LA, is a leading destination for fiction and immersive storytelling in the podcast space. It’s released eight scripted podcasts at No.1 in the fiction category and top 10 overall on the Apple Podcast Chart and said additional investment will help it scale up to more than 15 originals a year across genres and in partnership with talent, production and media companies.
Former CAA agent Rob Herting launched the podcaster in 2019 with production company Automatik and management firm Grandview. “We started Qcode … to give more autonomy to creators and artists in building new and original stories,” he said.
Partner Sonos, of Santa Barbara, is an innovator in wireless home audio. “From the beginning, we’ve been committed to delivering a great listening experience,...

Riding The Second Wave
Déjà vu: If there was any lingering optimism that the UK could avoid a second wave of coronavirus, events this week will surely have washed away these hopes. With daily cases rising to more than 6,000, the government has renewed social restrictions, encouraged Brits to work from home where possible, and devised a replacement for the furlough scheme. Strap in for another six months, we’re being told.
What does it mean for production? Well, very little at this point, according to Pact CEO John McVay. TV and film shoots can continue under new government rules and McVay says producers are fastidiously observing industry safety protocols. “People want to get back to work, and they’re working...
