The cinema lovers prove that J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth magic still works for the fans of his revered creation. Soon after David Zaslav announced new additions to The Lord of the Rings universe, the re-release of the original Lotr trilogy pulls in excellent box office figures.
Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings | New Line Cinema
Considered one of the greatest trilogies of all time, Lotr has been a favorite among critics and fans worldwide. The impressive visuals and the timeless story continue to garner praise for the movies even 2 decades after their release.
After his taking over as the CEO and President of Warner Bros. Discovery, several of David Zaslav’s decisions welcomed controversy. Many people were unhappy with his ways. Anyways, the box office results of the Lotr re-release paint a different picture.

It was, once again, a Big Willie Weekend.
But for some moviegoers, it involved an act of live theater.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” was a massive hit for Sony, and beat all box office projections with a $56 million domestic haul plus an additional $48 million internationally. There were a lot of fingers crossed on this one, considering both the directors and central star had to overcome some setbacks.
For the Belgian helmers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, it was their first at-bat since David Zaslav had “Batgirl” ash-canned. For Will Smith, it was his first mainstream movie since he lost his cool at the 94th Academy Awards and whapped Chris Rock across the face and barked profanities at him following a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair. Smith’s next picture “Emancipation” for Apple TV+ was already in the can, but “Bad Boys” was the test to see...

Back in March, we got word that a new The Lord of the Rings movie is set to hit theaters in 2026, with Andy Serkis on board to direct and reprise the role of Gollum.
Original Lotr trilogy director Peter Jackson and his writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are also set to return as producers, and “will be involved every step of the way” according to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
The movie's working title is The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which should give you a pretty good idea of what the story will focus on! The movie will likely be set shortly before the events of Jackson's trilogy.
This time period is mentioned in both Tolkien's novels and the films, with Gandalf and Aragorn attempting to track Gollum down before he falls into Sauron's hands. In the movies, the wizard says he...

By the time you read to the end of this sentence, Shari Redstone may have made a deal with David Ellison’s Skydance. Or not.
Days after reports that Skydance had finally come to an agreement with Paramount’s special committee, there has been a pregnant pause as Redstone considered whether to pull the trigger on a complicated deal that would end her control of the entertainment empire assembled by her late father.
While thousands of Paramount staffers and the media world wait, the pot has been stirred. Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav may have added a new element to the mix by signaling his interest in acquiring CBS and Paramount Global’s TV stations — from either Redstone or Ellison, as the case may be. And sources have noted that John Lasseter, the leader of the Skydance’s animation unit that has been touted as a positive in a possible deal with Paramount,...

For a company that doesn’t ‘have to have’ the NBA, Wbd is looking more and more desperate to retain its rights at any cost.
Warner Bros. Discovery isn’t letting the NBA go without a fight… or two… or three. The company’s prospects for acquiring a package of NBA regular season and playoff games equivalent to what it has now in the league’s next national broadcasting rights deal seems to grow smaller every day, but that doesn’t mean that CEO David Zaslav is ready to throw in the towel just yet. Puck News has new details on Wbd’s new focus, a fourth package of games that could be carved out that would allow it to keep the NBA on TNT past the 2024-25 season.
Key Details: Wbd’s prospective fourth package could be made up of games that were formerly local broadcasts converted into national games.

Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd) CEO David Zaslav is leaning on the company’s other sports assets as it remains at risk of losing a key media rights deal with the National Basketball Association (NBA). We continue to talk to the NBA, Zaslav said while speaking at a Bernstein conference on Thursday. We love our experience with the NBA. But in general, we’re a leader in sports… a full buffet of content around the world. The executive touted the company’s Olympics coverage win in Europe, along with recent additions of NHL games, Nascar races and college football in the US. This...

One of the more commonly overused words in entertainment marketing is “visionary.”
Whether or not a single consumer has ever watched a film or TV show because of an unsourced studio claim that the alleged auteur behind it was a “visionary,” the frequency with which the term is applied appropriately is very low. Wanna call Wes Anderson a visionary? Sure. Even people who hate the guy can’t deny the singularity of his approach. But just as frequently it’s tossed in the direction of, say, a guy whose vision was making a commercial with Antonio Banderas as a bee who hates snot. There needs to be a more thorough “visionary” vetting process.
That being said: Julio Torres is a visionary.
The former Saturday Night Live writer’s new HBO comedy Fantasmas doesn’t exactly confirm the absurdist promise of HBO’s Los Espookys and the recent feature Problemista mostly...

The next evolution in the streaming wars? It’s a new spin on the old cable TV model: cross-company bundles of streaming services.
Consumers like bundles, especially if they’re getting a price break. Media companies like bundles because they help reduce churn and lower customer-acquisition costs, even it means working with would-be rivals.
Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery are teaming for a Disney+-Hulu-Max combo to bow this summer, and Disney, Wbd and Fox Corp. are hoping to launch the Venu Sports bundle of live channels in the fall. (Pricing for those packages is Tbd.) And on May 29, Comcast started selling StreamSaver — a bundle of Peacock, Netflix and Apple TV+ at a discount of 35% or more — exclusively to its TV and broadband customers.
The Disney and Wbd partnership “presents a powerful new road map for the future of the industry,” Wbd’s Jb Perrette, CEO and president of global streaming and games,...

Once upon a time, Hollywood's most tech-forward studios made many a breathless proclamation that streaming was the future. Simply put, nothing could rival the convenience, the lack of annoying ads, the vast library of titles available at our fingertips, or, most importantly of all, the affordability of subscribing to all the major streamers -- as opposed to venturing out to expensive movie theaters and catching the latest blockbuster on the big screen. Well, fast forward a few years and the biggest monkey's paw of all time has curled in ways that, quite frankly, we should've seen coming. For many discerning viewers, streaming has mostly just become synonymous with awfully pixelated and low-quality visuals, studios abruptly pulling entire movies and shows at the drop of a hat without offering any release on physical media, and a dystopia where algorithms and advertisements intrude on every spare inch of the screen. Good times!

Paramount Global needs to (further) reduce its staff size to compete in today’s cutthroat media landscape. Perhaps it could start by trimming a few CEOs.
After Bob Bakish was unceremoniously (but richly) exited from the company, Paramount went with an “Office of the CEO” setup, the trio of George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy, and Brian Robbins. Those three, with a lead-in from controlling shareholder Shari Redstone, ran Paramount Global’s 2024 Investor Day presentation — and a brief (and very rehearsed) Q&a — on Tuesday.
Redstone’s is the final signature required for Paramount to be merged with Skydance; a formal announcement is likely in the coming days. Until then, mum is the word on that pending deal — and Paramount Global must present to investors like the offer doesn’t exist.
Coincidentally, the three men have a three-part plan to turn around this Titanic (and maybe even tow its pieces back to...

It’s almost “House of the Dragon” season again, which means it’s time for HBO to put everything it has into showing off the megahit series.
The Season 2 world premiere at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom was attended by cast and crew, celebrities, press — and, as Casey Bloys noted in his opening remarks before a screening of Episode 1, members of the executive board of Warner Bros. Discovery, including C.E.O. David Zaslav.
“I’m guessing that they’ve had a couple conversations saying, ‘Where’s all that HBO money go?'” Bloys said. “And my hope is that you see it on screen tonight. The dragons are very cool, they’re very expensive, but I did ask the production team to give me an idea of what it takes to put on a season of ‘House of the Dragon’ or a show of this size.”

Paramount: Now (finally) Under New Ownership! A special committee at the company has approved a deal that will merge Paramount Global with Skydance after David Ellison acquires National Amusements, Inc. (Nai) for about $2 billion.
The National Amusements theater chain has a controlling interest in Paramount. Skydance Media CEO Ellison is paying for that control, and then he’ll make Paramount buy his production company.
All told, it is expected to cost Ellison and his financial backers at RedBird Capital Partners in the ballpark of $8 billion to make this happen, as first reported by CNBC’s David Faber. On top of Shari Redstone’s $2 billion for her family’s Nai, $4.5 billion more will go to current Paramount shareholders; another $1.5 billion in cash will be contributed to Paramount’s balance sheet. The numbers are pretty fresh and could still change some, a person with knowledge of the goings-on tells IndieWire.

Reports that Max was highly likely to raise its subscription costs first began to circulate in early May.
Max is just days away from the release of its second season of “House of the Dragon,” which is expected to drive huge numbers for the streaming service. Given that fact, and how opportunistic Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has proven to be, it’s hardly surprising that Max appears poised to roll out a price increase this month. Some customers have already received notice that their subscription rate is going up, and it’s essentially guaranteed that more Max subscribers will get news about their costs rising before the week is out.
Key Details: Viewers who receive their Max subscription through Verizon have been notified their price is increasing starting on their next bill. The increase affects Max’s ad-free plan and will see the cost rise by $1 per month...

Long-term national telecast rights to a package of NBA games are still up in the air after next season, and the CEO of Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) says it would be wrong to count them out.
At an investor event last Thursday, Wbd CEO David Zaslav said his company still wants to be known as “a leader in the sports world,” and is still interested in grabbing some NBA games after its current rights deal expires next year.
Currently, ESPN and Wbd’s TNT Sports share national broadcast rights to the NBA’s regular season and playoff games. ESPN holds the rights to the NBA “A” package, while TNT Sports airs the “B” package of games.

Skydance and RedBird Capital are sweetening their takeover deal for Paramount Global.
A source confirms to The Hollywood Reporter that the investor group, which also includes Kkr, has made a revised offer to Paramount’s independent board committee reviewing deals.
While the specifics of the new offer were not immediately available, it is believed to sweeten the deal for Paramount’s Class B shareholders, many of which have expressed concern about the original offer. Paramount is effectively controlled by Shari Redstone and her National Amusements, which holds more than 70 percent of Class A voting shares.
Class B shareholders have expressed concern that they are not getting the same value out of the deal that Redstone is, with some threatening lawsuits if the company moves forward with the deal.

Breaking news: The greatest threat to this industry isn't the death of movie theaters, the rise of artificial intelligence, or Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav's reign of terror. It is, in fact, writer/director Rian Johnson's ceaseless efforts to cast the entirety of Hollywood in his "Knives Out" movies.
Since today's a day that ends in "Y," that quest continues unabated yet again. After only just hearing word that the third film in this murder-mystery series, titled "Wake Up Dead Man," has added actors Josh O'Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, and Glenn Close to its roster of stars, we've now received word that yet another high-profile name is close to signing on the dotted line. It’s that time of year again!
The old guard in media and finance and the tech innovators disrupting them are gearing up to hit Allen & Co.’s leadership retreat Sun Valley – where private jets sit bumper-to-bumper and power is carved up and handed out among global players. It’s an ultra-secretive event for the one-percent set (think Davos with higher fences).
But Variety can exclusively report that the guest list for the Idaho gathering includes National Amusements president Shari Redstone — in the thick of a deal to sell Paramount Global and with it her family’s media empire to Skydance — as well as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Hollywood super-producer Jason Blum. They join veterans like Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Bob Iger, Amazon’s Andy Jassy and Jeff Bezos, Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav, Apple’s Tim Cook and Netflix co-ceo’s Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters.

The story of The Lord of the Rings is not over yet. Warner Bros. will be coming out with a new bunch of live-action films centered on Gollum. The working title of the first film is The Hunt for Gollum and it will see Andy Serkis returning to reprise his role as the titular character. As updates keep coming for the film, Viggo Mortensen revealed that he would consider returning to his character on a few conditions.

Viggo Mortensen played the role of Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy and was one of the fan-favorite characters in both the books and films. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who started talking about more deals shortly after inking a massive merger, irritating Wall Street, has been publicly quiet on that front for a bit. Today said he sees opportunities in M&a with the company on a stronger financial footing and rolling streamer Max out globally to achieve necessary scale.
Discovery’s acquisition of Warner Media generated significant debt which stood at about $50 billion at one point. Wbd has paid about $15 billion of that down, Zaslav said during a Q&a at Bernstein’s Strategic Decisions investor conference today. Free cash flow is stronger, streaming is (on-and-off) profitable “and we have a long-term plan.”

Will TNT survive without the NBA? Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav seems confident that it will.
While acknowledging that the company is still talking to the NBA about a new rights deal (the league appears poised to give packages to Disney, NBC and Amazon, though Wbd has some “matching” rights), Zaslav said that the company has been trying to bolster the sports lineup on its channels.
“We have been on a journey here in the U.S.” Zaslav said. “We added hockey with [NHL commissioner] Gary Bettman, we added a summer of NASCAR, we just added college football. When you put that together with March Madness and baseball playoffs and the U.S. Soccer that we have, it is a very robust offering for consumers that they can watch on TNT in the U.S. all year round, and that is our job, is to continue to look at,...

Warner Bros. Discovery, just over two years after closing the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, will be “opportunistic” about seeking M&a deals in the next two or three years, president and CEO David Zaslav said.
“I think some companies will be for sale,” Zaslav said, speaking Thursday at the Bernstein 40th Annual Strategic Decisions Conference in New York. “We can be opportunistic but we’re going to be very disciplined.”
“I think there’s likely going to be some consolidation. There are a lot of players. There are a lot of players that are losing a lot of money,” Zaslav said. “One of the reasons why we really fought to drive our free cash flow and pay down our debt is to be in a position — as we roll out globally, as we fight to build our business — that we’re a healthy company.”
Speaking of losing money, Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav says execs “continue to talk to the NBA” about a renewal of rights, but he argued that even without pro hoops the company’s sports offerings are “very robust.”

It’s not exactly a ground-breaking statement to say that the price of streaming has been rising. Top streaming services have seemingly all raised prices in the past year, as Wall Street’s prioritization of profits has led to cost-cutting and revenue-boosting measures across the industry.

Rumours about who will direct Spider-Man 4 continue to swirl, with Ms. Marvel and Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah among those supposedly in the mix.
Jon Watts helmed Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home but appears ready to move on from the web-slinger. Despite also leaving The Fantastic Four, Kevin Feige is said to be keen on Watts returning to the MCU for another project.
Appearing at a recent screening event for Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Fallah was asked to speak on the Spider-Man 4 rumours and his reaction (refusing to answer the question while saying "I can't talk about that...") may be telling.
While we're not suggesting this has confirmed his and El Arbi's involvement with the movie, it seems highly likely the duo are likely contenders.

Wbd CEO David Zaslav considers NBC’s bid of $2.5 billion an overpay for NBA rights, and could go after the newly-created “C” package of NBA rights.
The saga of the NBA’s latest round of contract negotiations has had more twists and turns than a seven-game playoff series. As talks have progressed, signs have increasingly pointed to a scenario in which Warner Bros. Discovery — which currently owns the NBA’s “B” broadcasting package — loses its status as an NBA partner, as NBC has bid as much as $2.6 billion per season to snag that package for itself. The league has also created a new “C” package of broadcast rights, and a new report from CNBC reveals that Wbd may try to secure this package for itself instead of trying to use its matching rights to wrestle the “B” package away from NBC.

Barkley said that he has discussed the idea with his co-hosts, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith. And, to note, Wbd owns the rights to Inside the NBA but Barkley could find a way to reconstitute it under a different name if he struck out on his own.

The company could resort to a lawsuit to try and keep NBA rights, but if it loses them it will have an extra $1.2 billion per year to spend.
The ball is about to head to Warner Bros. Discovery’s court. The company could face a big decision in the coming days, as reports circulated Wednesday that the NBA is about to leave Wbd’s cable channel TNT in favor of a new broadcasting deal with Comcast and NBC starting in 2025. Wbd has a complex set of matching rights in its current contract, and could even try to sue to retain its NBA package, but if it does end up losing the Association, it will have to consider what to do with the $1.2 billion per season it has been paying the league since 2014, and the even more billions that it was planning in spending moving forward. The rivalry between Disney and Warner Bros. represents one of the most long-lasting and dynamic business competitions in the entertainment industry. Their rivalry has been deeply rooted as it has existed since the 1920s, and it originated from both studios having humble beginnings to becoming powerhouses in terms of filmmaking and creating content to entertain its audience.

While both studios are great in their own spheres it looks like Disney has the upper hand as it looks like they have overtaken their rivals in the race to sign an exciting deal with the NBA, and Warner Bros. can not do anything about it as their financial conditions are restricting them from making any lucrative offer to the National Basketball Association as they are already struggling to clear their $40 billion debt.

Lord of the Rings IP owner Embracer Group has seen net sales at its Entertainment & Services division fall by 15%, but is betting big on Middle-earth in coming years.
Entertainment sales for the fourth quarter of 2023 (covering January to March 2024) were SEK1.26B ($118M), down from SEK1.49B the previous year. Embracer noted the Middle-earth Enterprises unit that houses Lord of the Rings was likely to make a “somewhat lower expected contribution” year-on-year than expected.
Overall, Embracer’s net sales fell 5% to SEK8.88B, with the PC/Games and Tabletop Games units providing the lions’ share of revenue, and while there was a SEK20.38M Ebit loss, down from SEK95M a year ago. Adjusted Ebit was SEK1.3B, up 56%.

As the world eagerly anticipates a magical resurgence, Max’s Harry Potter TV series promises to cast a revitalizing charm on J.K. Rowling’s beloved Wizarding World. This comes after the spellbinding success of Warner Bros.’ eight-film juggernaut that captured our imaginations from 2001 to 2011, with Daniel Radcliffe’s portrayal of the boy wizard etching an indelible mark in cinematic history.

Daniel Radcliffe says it would be wise for the upcoming “Harry Potter” television series on Max to distance itself from the iconic film series, which means the potential for him to cameo in the show is quite low. Radcliffe famously headlined eight “Harry Potter” movies in the title role from 2001 to 2011.
“I don’t think so,” he told E! Online when asked about starring in the series in any capacity. “I think they very wisely want to [have] a clean break. And I don’t know if it would work to have us do anything in it. I’m very happy to just watch along with everyone else.”
Radcliffe then politely backed out of any more “Harry Potter” television talk. When asked if Max had already asked him about being involved in the series, he responded, “I’m going to be a politician about this and not deal in hypotheticals.”

Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal may have raised concerns with fans as he missed his recent television show appearance.
The four-time NBA champion regularly appears as one of TNT’s hosts on Inside the NBA, alongside Ernie Johnson, Kenny “The Jet” Smith, and Charles Barkley.
The Emmy-winning crew has covered NBA games on TNT throughout many seasons and special events such as the All-Star Game and the playoffs.
Several days ago, Shaq was not among the hosts as the program opened its coverage of a big playoff game with another retired basketball star in his seat.
Ernie introduced Vince Carter as one of the hosts for Sunday’s playoff game coverage, indicating that he was there filling in for Shaq.
Meanwhile, Shaq posted an intriguing message on his social media, which received much attention.

Even as it faces a full-court press from investors curious to know if it will retain rights to show games from the NBA, Warner Bros. Discovery has been courting sports from a different field.
Warner Bros. Discovery has struck a deal with rival ESPN, according to two people familiar with the matter, that will have the former sub-licensing a small number of college football playoff games over a five-year period starting later this year. TNT will be the lead media network for broadcast of two first-round games this year and next, and then will add two quarterfinals starting in 2026.
The deal surfaces as Warner Bros. Discovery remains enmeshed in critical discussions with the NBA about renewing long-standing media rights. Warner and the NBA have been allied since 1989, with the relationship growing so strong that Warner has helped operate the NBA’s cable network and manage some of its digital properties.

The Association will make more than $7 billion per season in broadcasting fees, according to a new report.
The NBA appears poised to announce that it’s officially leaving TNT. That’s according to Sports Business Journal which reported Wednesday that the Association is gearing up to formalize its new national broadcasting deal this week and that its partners will be ESPN, Amazon’s Prime Video, and NBC, which has seemingly pulled off a major upset by swiping the package of games formerly held by Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT Sports. It’s a transformational deal for the league and one that leaves Wbd with many more questions than answers.
Key Details: ESPN has retained exclusive NBA Finals rights, and will pay $2.8 billion per season for the NBA’s “A” package. NBC will take over the “B” package, with two primetime windows per week and playoff rights for $2.6 billion. Prime Video...

Spider-Man 4 is one of Marvel Studios' most highly anticipated movies but, as we write this, it has no release date or even a confirmed director.
According to Jeff Sneider, Marvel and Sony Pictures are developing a new trilogy together, with the intention being for one director - or a directing duo - to work on all three instalments.
He says it's unclear whether shooting really will begin this fall because Kevin Feige is taking his time choosing a filmmaker and is fully in charge of the creative process. That bodes well for Spider-Man 4 after it was previously reported he might be a little more hands-off due to having so many other commitments in getting the MCU back on the right track.
We've already heard a few different names for the movie, but Sneider makes a point of saying that Feige was particularly impressed with Adil El Arbi and...

Several inconvenient things can happen in a movie set, and much more if one stars in films that require extravagant costumes, such as Fantastic Beasts. Fans know how stunning the wardrobe of the characters in the franchise is, but not all glamorous things are comfortable to wear.
Eddie Redmayne and Katherine Waterston in Fantastic Beasts | Warner Bros.
Working in a set like Fantastic Beasts has its ups and downs, and for actress Katherine Waterston, who played Porpentina Goldstein, it was her costume that extremely bothered her.
Katherine Waterston On Her Uncomfortable Fantastic Beasts Outfit
During an interview with BuzzFeed, Katherine Waterston said the hardest thing she had to get used to was her coat. She claimed the weight of it terribly became a nuisance while filming.

A new report offers details on what could happen to the joint venture sports streaming platform if Wbd’s NBA package moves to NBC.
No matter how confident Warner Bros. Discovery executives sound when discussing the issue, the company is in a tight spot with the NBA. The company finds itself in the unenviable position of having to pay more than twice the amount it now spends to buy a smaller package of NBA games than it currently has starting in 2025, or simply admitting defeat and walking away in the face of NBC’s $2.5 billion-per-season offer for the package. But Wbd’s decision on this question doesn’t just affect its own business, it also has important implications for Venu Sports, the joint venture streaming service Wbd is at work on with Disney and Fox.

The Lord of the Rings universe is expanding once again, and fans have a lot to look forward to. While Peter Jackson has been a pivotal figure in bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s world to life, this time it’s another familiar face steering the ship. Andy Serkis, who famously portrayed Gollum in both the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, will not only return to star but also direct the upcoming film, The Hunt for Gollum. This news was confirmed during Warner Bros. Discovery’s recent earnings call on May 9 by CEO David Zaslav, highlighting a new direction for the

Summer is coming, but streamers want you to bundle up.
It has long not been an original thought to say that streaming is starting to look more and more like cable, but the industry has been taking new steps to ensure the comparison doesn’t die. On Tuesday, Comcast chief Brian L. Roberts revealed a coming bundle between NBCUniversal’s Peacock, Apple’s Apple TV+, and Netflix’s, well, Netflix. We did not get a price point or a launch date, but we do have a name: StreamSaver. Roberts promised significant savings, hence the name.
If the StreamSaver announcement sounds familiar, it’s probably because that is the precise promise of an also newly announced Summer 2024 Disney bundle between Disney+, Hulu, and Max. Disney has long-experienced the strength of a bundle with two options for consumers to combine its in-house streaming services: the duo is Disney+ and Hulu, the trio adds ESPN+.

Nine years after the debut of “Mad Max: Fury Road” in the South of France, George Miller is once again the toast of the Croisette. The audience at the world premiere of the director’s prequel “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” went wild for his latest high-octane action film, showering the movie with an enthusiastic six-minute standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night.

Direct-to-consumer revenue is up 70% year-over-year for Warner Bros. Discovery, and the ascendence of the ad tier of Max is a big reason why.
By now, even those who don’t follow big media companies closely likely know that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is a man singularly focused on the bottom line. Zaslav’s two-year tenure as head of Wbd has been marked by numerous periods of frugality from the company, which is hardly surprising considering the 2022 merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery created a firm with more than $40 billion of debt. Content cuts became a part of life for the company’s streaming service that was known as HBO Max when Zaslav took over, and viewers lost access to everything from “Westworld” to episodes of “Sesame Street” as the company tried to slash its way to better financial standing. HBO Max first launched its ad-supported plan in 2021, but the...

Upfront week’s reliance on films isn’t actually new but it is increasingly bizarre, as evidenced by the top of Wednesday morning’s Warner Bros. Discovery presentation kicking off with sizzle that prioritized features Furiosa, Dune: Part Two and Wonka — when new episodes of the HBO and Max’s flagship Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon, are just weeks away.
But the opening frames proved to be relatively misleading, as the 90-minute (notably David Zaslav free) pitch to advertisers focused almost exclusively on … advertising. And on linear TV, at that. Warner Bros. Discovery kept up with TV upfronts week’s biggest trend at their presentation out of The Theater at Madison Square Garden Tuesday: Promoting not just its TV slate as a prime ad-buying opportunity — but also its film franchises.
First up from CEO David Zaslav’s team, WB Discovery revenue and strategy chief Bruce Campbell addressed the Madison Avenue crowd following a sizzle featuring top Wbd IP and brands across film and TV series. Then Mindy Kaling took the stage to promote her Max comedy “The Sex Lives of College Girls” before introducing HBO and Max chairman and CEO Casey Bloys.
