Scream VI (2023)
8/10
Brutal and Intense, with a few minor issues.
13 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I am a huge scream fan and I went to the cinema to watch this on opening night. The opening kill scene was really cool and different. The 'killer' reveal at the start threw me off and it was interesting to see something different to usual scream style open kills. Although, that being said, Casey still takes #1 spot of best Openings of any scream movie.

Ghostface was brutal in this movie, and I think this is needed in modern scream films as I don't think any sequel can have the same quirk as the original. That apartment scene with Quinn's 'death' and the ladder scene was incredibly tense, brutal and entertaining. Same with Gale's chase scene. The tube scene was also tense and utilised the NY setting of the movie.

The killer reveal was not bad. It was a little far fetched but which scream movie isn't! I was surprised at Quinn and found that twist very entertaining. Ethan was also slightly surprising as I thought he was a too obvious character and hence disregarded the possibility he would actually be ghostface. Detective Bailey was ok. The motive was like a slightly better version than scream 2, as it seemed more plausible to be annoyed at Sam for the sheer brutality of how she killed Ritchie. But even so, a full family of killers? Didn't take away from how much I enjoyed the film though.

Kirby was great, I loved her more in Scream 4, but was nice to see her back in action.

Gale felt a little out of place but provided a tense and cool chase scene. And that punch scene between her and Tara was golden.

Now to some of my issues:

I get that the earlier films also had this, but the fact that all Gale, Chad, Tara and Mindy got stabbed many times and survived took away the impact of how brutal ghostface was in this movie. Chad especially. I know Dewey survived all sorts in the original 3 but he wasn't quite stabbed 12 times like Chad.

Ghostface came across brutal but in reality the only character he killed was Anika. Every other kill were just randomers/ opening girl. So it did feel a tad underwhelming at the end. Seeing every character survive after those brutal stabbings felt a bit ridiculous to the point it took away any fear I had for ghostface.

Gale kind of had a redemption arc and I feel that they threw that away to give her a reason to come back to scream 6 by writing another book.

The Billy visions need to stop, its horrible to watch.

Overall, a strong entry into the Franchise which I preferred over Scream 5. I think so far it sits in my top 3, behind the original and scream 4.

House of the Dragon (2022– )
9/10
Great first season
24 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I've just finished watching the season 1 finale and I have to say I am very impressed with House of the Dragon. After the mess that is season 8 of Game of Thrones I had lost all faith in any potential prequels, spin-offs etc. But I am so glad I gave this one a chance.

I don't think I can say it is quite as good as season 1 of GoT, but what I can say is that season 1 of HotD is a great quality and solid first season, surpassing the quality of most tv shows.

I will go through the slight issues I had with it before giving it praise.

Cons:

1. Time-jumps: whilst I appreciated it was to initially give us the important events leading up to where we are now, I did feel it was a little jumpy and rushed at times. I think I would have appreciated a more fleshed out lead up. But I get why they chose to do it like this.

2. Good v Bad guys: I can't help but think they're painting the greens to be all bad, and blacks to be all good. I prefer to see complexity in characters; that's something GoT did so well. I have not read Fire and Blood so forgive me if it is so black and white in terms of who is good and who is bad in the book.

3. There are some questionable CGI moments for such a high budget HBO show. However... there are also some fantastic visuals, especially in the finale.

Pros:

1. Acting: Everyone is amazing. Both young and 'old' Rhaenyra and Alicent are incredible actors. I have to give it to Emma and Olivia- I was hesitant about the change in actors but they quickly proved that they could hold their own. Paddy as Viserys was amazing. Same goes for Matt Smith as Daemon. Casting all around is flawless in my opinion.

2. Dragons: Whilst I would have liked to see a bit more of the dragons in some episodes, the dragon designs we do see are incredible and unique.

3. Music: this gets better and better each episode. Beautiful.

4. Writing: excellent writing and dialogue throughout. It really matches GoT on the most part.

5. Cinematography: the camera work and (most) visuals are flawless. Especially in the finale.

6. Plot: A great, tense and intriguing story. Very impressed.

Overall, this TV show has started off incredible, with a lot of potential to continue into one of the best TV shows of all time.

Most episodes I gave a 9, with episode 7,8,10 as 10/10s.

House of the Dragon: Second of His Name (2022)
Season 1, Episode 3
9/10
Another great episode.
5 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
In my opinion this is the best episode so far. Paddy's acting is great in this episode, and the rest of the cast do their job well. It builds the story well. I do feel it could be a slowed down. Whilst I have enjoyed the pacing on the most part, I feel we could have had some more time exploring some of the other characters more such as the crab feeder, Rheanyrs and Laenor. But since it is only episode 3 we I'm sure we will get time to see more of the latter 2. Intrigued where it will go from here.

The battle at the end added another level to the episode. Was pretty brutal. It was quite short however, and a 1v1 with Daemon and the crab feeder would've been good to see. I think we are just used to huge scale battles in westeros that smaller scale ones like this seem underwhelming. But it was still good, and again only 3 episodes in.

One thing I think could improve is the music. The GOT Targaryen music was epic and moving. We are missing that in HotD. CGI is good on the most part.

Overall a great episode.

Nope (2022)

Underwhelming
14 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Not quite sure what I was supposed to be watching. Certainly wasn't horror or thriller. Could hardly say it was sci-fi either. The only scene I felt was mildly scary and was the scene where those aliens appeared but then it turned out to be just kids. The film was just 2 hours or so of underwhelming scenes, and when it started to go somewhere, it just lost all its tension and went back to another boring scene.

Whilst I actually thought the chimpanzee subplot was more interesting than the main plot, and understood its purpose, that too felt like it was going to be something more relevant and ended up just distracting and losing focus from the main plot.

I just didn't buy what this movie was trying to get across. Its focus on trying to get this metaphorical message across just ended up with characters making stupid choices and felt pretentious. Sometimes a film can just benefit from being a focused, tight plot with logical writing. Jordan Peele's approach worked with Get Out, it didn't with this one for me.

Visually good, acting was fine, still mildly entertaining at times but I left the cinema feeling disappointed.

The Piggyback
1 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly some of the best tv i've watched in a long time. Acting was top notch, the cinematography was great and the story was intense and emotional. Thoroughly enjoyed season 4's darker tone, and this finale continued that and adds a lot of emotion. One of the best episode of this show so far for me. Episode 7 still takes top spot.

One small issue- I think it was unnecessary to bring Max back alive. Her 'death' had me in tears, and I like Max don't get me wrong but eleven bringing her back in a way kind of ruined that whole sad emotional montage of her dying moments before. Felt a bit unoriginal and the typical main characters can't die mindset. Max had near death several times this season just to be saved and saved again, it became tedious seeing her being saved once again. Max was the main focus this season and it would've ended her story arc perfectly.

But I can forgive it, because everything else was perfectly done. RIP eddie, and dustin's breakdown over his body was hard to watch. Still deserves a 10, just think Max's death would've left more of an impact on season 4's greatness.

Incredible Sequel
5 June 2022
This film gets everything right. Good pacing, great balance of introducing new characters whilst exploring original ones. Miles Teller is great, all the cast are great to be honest. The visuals are stunning and there is a good build up of tension and suspense. All the new characters were enjoyable to watch, and their interactions matched the fun nature of the original. Also, this film packs in some emotional weight which gave it a lot of depth.

The plot is fairly simple, but still engaging. Overall, a brilliant sequel that is arguably better than the original. Best film I've been in a long time.

Warning: Spoilers
I don't really understand the hate for this film. Sure there were some comedic moments that fell flat and misplaced, and some missed opportunities to build on some multiversal concepts in more depth, but overall this film was good. Just different to what the fan theorists wanted.

I do wish that there was a bit more runtime to build some emotional depth to Chavez coming to terms with her power, and Wanda battling with her corruption. And some time to go into depth of concepts such as incursions etc. Hence I'm not giving it 10/10.

However, the fast paced nature of the film was so unconventional that it actually worked for what the film was trying to be: madness. I actually liked how Wanda was just evil from the start and we just had to kind of assume their had been some drastic decline in sanity from post wandavision off screen. I can see why some people may not like that.

The action was incredible. Great visuals. Good music. Horror elements were good, sometimes a little overdone. The illuminati scenes were interesting. Enjoyed how quickly they were killed as it showed their arrogance.

I get where people are coming from with the 'not enough multiverse' however when you think about it, there was quite a bit including dream walking, the introduction of numbered universes, Chavez, introduction of illuminati and different stranges and wanda. I think its just because there weren't many cameos outside the illuminati. But I am fine with that.

Strange v strange was very cool. Just completely different and fitting with the 'strange' element of his character. Wanda was the star of the show, and completely brutal. The illuminati was good to show some insight into another universe, however could have been a bit more integral to the plot as suggested in the trailer. It was kind of just stuck in there

Overall, I was impressed. Different to what I expected but that is a good thing.

Visually cool, but no substance
1 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There is a lack of any real story going on in all of season 2. And any story that has progressed is jumpy and paced poorly. I think season 2 focused too much on trying to look the part rather than actually progressing the story from season 1.

Maddy/Nate/Cassie story line was dragged out way too much- that on stage fight should have been way sooner. Other characters are side lined, like Kat who had no story at all this season.

The finale was ok. I did enjoy parts of the play, but I also felt some of it was dragged or misplaced. I personally think the gym scene was a bit distasteful- using theatre to mimic Nate's sexuality I think was unnecessary. Like yes he is a terrible person but don't shame him for his sexuality.

Ash and Fez situation was a little extra, but provided some tension.

Overall, I think Euphoria is a good show, but is a little overrated. Its different take on high school life worked well for season 1, but for season 2 the visual, edgy focus took away from any real story or character development.

Spider-Man: No Way Home
24 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This film is full of fan service. It is also much more than that. But it is important to note that this fan service is done well and it not detrimental to the plot or enjoyment of the movie. I'm usually against film/TV being littered with fan service because usually it makes no sense and sometimes is out of character and ruins the consistency. But in this case it just added to the greatness of the movie.

This film provides everything: great spider-Man like comedy, epic action sequences, nostalgia and emotional depth that not many MCU films manage to do. The acting was great, especially by Tom Holland, and Willem Dafoe who reprised his role even creepier than before.

Obviously Tobey and Andrew's involvement made this movie even better. The on screen interaction between all 3 Spider-Mans and their interactions with respective universe villains are some of films most interesting and cool moments.

There were so many references and moments that make it an incredible experience for marvel fans. But it also is an incredible experience for the average audience. This movie had the bar raised high and the immense hype for it made me worry it would not live up to it. But I was wrong. It did.

This, on a par with infinity war, is my favourite MCU movie.

A perfect DH episode
7 October 2020
This has to be my favourite episode of the series. It provides all the elements of perfect TV: comedy, drama, emotional moments and incredible writing and acting. The character interactions are top tier with witty dialogue and heartfelt moments. The way the flash forward at the start of the episode all falls in to place throughout the episode really adds to the quality of the story telling. I really wish there were more DW episodes as good as this one.

Epic thriller

What an amazing thriller. It kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. Jodie foster is remarkable and so is Anthony Hopkins. Their acting really makes the film. Buffalo bill never fails to disappoint with his disturbing portrayal as the menacing psycho. Amazing film

Let's Hurt Him

Warning: Spoilers
Overall I thought this episode was very good. I think the pacing was a lot better in this episode than last week's and we got a few more answers from Xavier and the whole plot to take down Annalise. I was gripped from the start. The acting was top tier as usual, I just want to start seeing answers about Laurel, and Wes' appearance, because there are only 3 episodes left to wrap the whole thing up.

Also, Oliver is just annoying and adds nothing interesting to the story anymore (sorry it had to be said).

The Reckoning
10 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
First off, i thought this episode started quite slow and I was thinking 'oh no not now theres only 5 episodes left pick up the pace'. I do feel as though there was too much screen time taken up by Ophelia giving her warming talks to the likes of Nate, it just wasn't needed. However, having said that, the tensions growing between Annalise and Connor, Micheala began to drive the narrative and finding out the FBI killed Asher is really setting up these final few episodes to be insane. So overall, a good episode, and the 9/10 is due to the last 5 minutes. I just want these next 4 to be a little faster paced because there is still so much mystery to cover in a short amount of screen time.

Game of Thrones (2011–2019)

Game of Thrones
10 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I would give this an easy 10/10.. if season 8 didn't exist. But it does, unfortunately.

Season 1-6 10/10 Amazing, complex dialogue and intriguing logical story lines with strong character developments, shocking emotional moments and insane action scenes.

Season 7- 8/10 - still really good but seemed rushed and had some illogical moments that made no sense like the Ayra/Sansa fall out and the time/teleporting issues beyond the wall which revealed some lazy writing. But all in all filled with great moments and good set up for the final season.

Season 8- 2/10. I actually don't know where or start. Season 8 is a joke. Terrible writing. Nothing makes sense. The writers have butchered most character developments and given hardly any satisfying conclusions to their story arcs.

  • Brans story had no pay off at all and his whole role as the 3 eyed raven proved pointless against the Night King.

  • Jaime's redemption arc was cut off instantly with real no reason.

  • The Night Kings death was underwhelming. Infact all of episode 3 was poor, with no real structure and poorly written end to the main story line of the show. The battle was shockingly illogical and horrendous tactics. Zero white walker fights, limited deaths and ridiculous plot armour. Also editing was poor- some moments characters would be surrounded by hundreds of wights but then the next shot they were all gone. The plot armour ruined the battle of Winterfell. 'All' the Dothraki wiped out in seconds yet Samwell Tarly can fend them off. Laughable.

  • No Sansa and Cersei interaction of any sort which I would have liked to have seen. Although I appreciate this is just my personal disappointment rather than poor writing.

-Rhaegal taken down by first 3 shots, yet Drogon dodges an Iron fleets worth of Scorpions at Kings Landing, just to serve the plot. I guess Euron forgot about Dany's dragon and her forces.

-Jon does nothing all season (why was he resurrected if he didn't end the long night or atleast become King? The whole point of his resurrection is because the lord of light claimed he was needed alive). Speaking of Jon, what was the point of his lineage? It didn't change anything apart from give us unconvincing tension between him and Danaerys. I kind of like Danaerys going mad but it needed a lot more time and thought put into it - It went too far too fast with no substantial development to justify her killing thousands of innocent people. Again, Laughable. It needed seasons of planning and transitioning her character. After Dany's death it just skipped to Tyrion's trial and no one seemed phased over her death.

  • Anything that required any thought from the Writers was done off screen, like Arya and Sansa finding out about Jon's lineage.

  • Cersei, the clever mastermind who always has a deceitful plan up her sleeve does nothing but stand looking out of a window all season. What a waste of a character.

  • Ayra does not use her faceless abilities. How cool would it have been for something like Ayra shockingly kills Jaime in order to get his face and uses it to get close to cersei, she thinks she is safe then is stabbed whilst in the arms of her 'brother' who reveals to be Ayra. Atleast something like that may have been more satisfying a few bricks falling onto her.

  • Bran becomes king. Urghhh. He literally said countless times he could not be lord of winterfell or rule anymore. Why the sudden change of heart? No explanation? Oh typical.

  • Prince that was promised? Oh yeh let's forget about that too. Haha we fooled you audience.

However, my main issue was not with what happened but with how it all happened. Rushed and made no sense.

Major let downs and bad dialogue throughout. There are some good moments like Brienne being Knighted, but even that becomes ruined when she sleeps with Jaime- their relationship was so much nicer just being about honour and respect for one another. Have to appreciate effort by cast, visual and music crew and the few decent scenes as a whole.

Overall- 9/10 purely on S1-7.
