I wish for more...
27 February 2021
I love Escher and his work and the trailer for this movie looks really great. However, the movie is quite a bit dull with showing history instead of going deep into the thematic of Escher's work with connections to the math and interpretation as well as extrapolations from his work. In essence, it is a dry series of Escher's remarks from letters, ordered chronologically, with few interview fragments here-and-there with his children. This movie certainly does fill some space, but it is not what I hoped for. It describes Escher's life, more than his ideas, work, and their meaning.

Not the best use of time
2 November 2018
But, I guess I must be too picky. Though I will admit that this is a better movie than most this year, the ending was unfortunately too predictive for me. Some will say that there is a plot twist, but taking everything into account, I was expecting something like this.

The main character, Asger, is annoyingly overly emotional. I can't imagine someone like that working in an emergency call center and being given that much leeway for excessive behavior.

Oh, the littering...
8 June 2014
What stood out for me in this movie were the amount of littering done by the main characters that throw the cigarettes wherever and whenever they feel, and also very unnecessary and unfunny caricature of the Japanese tenant. I suppose I notice these kind of rather secondary details when there's not much in the movie to be entertained by. Everything else was forgettable. The love story is pretty lame, you can't relate to the main characters; Holly character is phony while Paul Varjak is as pathetic as it gets, but this is I guess the trademark of romantic comedies. Anyways, the movie bears historical significance so I'll let it slide with 6/10 :)

New World (2013)

Recycled and overdone
8 June 2014
While I admit the overall idea is great, the execution is not and this is obvious from the very first scenes. The acting is overdone by the main characters, at least for the crime/thriller movie. Maybe it would've been great as a musical :). Anyways, there are serious plot holes: man with a knife kills a person with a gun in a rather naive hand to hand combat although the person with a gun notices the killer slowly approaching from 5+ meters away; ilogical assumptions on the police database, atrocious security setup around the people that are very powerful and have everything to lose, lack of any skills by pretty much anyone (marksmanship and/or combat skills) etc. Fighting scenes are laughably naive, the script feels empty and the timing of events is always too convenient and feels obviously set-up, even for a movie. The final result is that the "New world" is kind of boring.

Interesting in the light of Edward Snowden's revelations...
17 September 2013
and beyond. The release date as such (few days have passed since it's available for buying at the movie's website) is spot on.

The movie puts the most emphasis on the philosophy and the moral dilemma of the main characters. Science plays the basic but secondary role as authors can't afford to go deeper into it as science hasn't solved the problem that is solved in this movie and I feel that is the right choice.

In short, a team of four mathematicians has, based on their proof that P=NP, created a machine which can, among many things also break all most commonly used encryption and give the owner huge power in the networked world (overseeing all confidential communication on the internet, bank transaction, breaking into computer systems etc.). As the project was funded by US Govt., they lay right on all results and want to keep those findings classified. Of course, all of the mathematicians understand the short-term ramifications of their finding as well as the dangers of immoral use. They are confronted with a moral dilemma of delivery of the final solution and signing a non-disclosure agreement on all results or opposing the powerful adversary. How would you decide to act in a given situation? The movie is fairly slow into the first 10mins, but the momentum builds up from there on. Acting is very good from all main actors. The only somewhat unconvincing character is the (not so ordinary, mysterious) security officer. The script is troublesome somewhere as some things are left out(context, or sense sometimes as some stuff sound ridiculous) probably on purpose to leave the feeling of something that we couldn't understand as they're talking practically about a proof that has been only constructed imaginary in this movie and whatever they'd reveal about it, it would sound ridiculous as it would not be correct so why not simplify it and just create short fuzzy dialogue in order to keep the movie as tractable and engaging as possible.

Overall: 8/10

Very good, but...
22 July 2012
TDKR is a very good fun movie indeed, but not as nearly as good as TDK. In the matter of quality it is quite close/comparable to the Batman Begins. The plot is raw and not as multi-layered as you would expect from Nolan. There are few unexpected twists but also a handful of clichés and plot holes that counter them. The storytelling during those 164mins doesn't transcendent into something that could occupy anything other than your perceptory senses. Bane is nowhere near to be as charismatic as the Joker was, in fact no one in the movie is and that is the main weakness of the movie, really. Catwoman is good, but Michelle Pfeiffer's was better. This Catwoman version has some advantages but also many flaws - and this is not Anne Hathaway's fault, who by the way did a great job, but due to the Nolan character concept which is much simplified wrt. Burton's version. Although I've mainly pointed out the weaknesses of the movie, don't be fooled - I liked the movie and had fun watching it but after the TDK I had high expectations and those expectations weren't fulfilled.

Action scenes and the special effects are really good (and loud!) and as I've pointed out there are few plot twists which keep the suspense high till the very end of the movie.

All in all, this is a high quality Hollywood action movie, but only that. And I must add I liked the Avengers more due to the greater charisma of the characters.

US humor
19 August 2011
In last few years i've watched a handful of comedies and this one is similar to Hangover in its comedy style. Sadly i didn't find this movie one single bit funny nor amusing, but i guess it's just because it's strongly localized US humor which isn't compatible with me.

Scenes are loaded with sexual implications and too linear script with simple, cheap and predictable gag setup. By the time the final punch line scene is landed you just expect the very same outcome as served. There is no surprise factor needed to make a good comedy.

If you liked The Hangover you'll probably like this one, others could find it boring.

Superb!
28 February 2011
This is by far the best movie of the year!

I enjoyed the first movie very much but the sequel even surpasses that. The story is more complex and keeps you interested and involved all the way. The central character is again Roberto Nascimento who is now more mature, as the story is set 13years later than the first movie. His enemies are corrupted policemen and politicians who prove to be much bigger threat than the drug lords as they have political power to influence Nascimento's position. Nascimento will have to adapt and learn to fight on other fields using new methods.

This time we also learn more about Nascimento's family and his relationship with them, especially with his adolescent son.

really didn't like it
5 February 2011
The making of the movie is great, but i didn't like it at all. Its noises and flashing it constantly exposes you to stressed me, I suspect such setting could provoke epileptic seizure :P.

i went from being relaxed before the movie to burned out(of flashing and noises and frightening scenes)when going home from cinema. I really don't think that watching a movie should be as draining and exhausting - it should be more about having FUN. Like the real life, full of stressful situations, isn't enough.

All actors made a great effort and were realistic in their performances. If you could handle the darkness and creepiness of the movie then you should give it a try.

boring

Warning: Spoilers
i watched this in a cinema and i was BORED beyond belief

Everything is black&white, omnipotent US troops, main character behaving like a cowboy, playing with odds even when it doesn't make sense

can't deny there were few interesting moments like when they found the Iraqi boy who got killed in the process of surgical insertion of a bomb and all the drama in the beginning of a movie with cell phone activation of a bomb, but those interesting moments were too rare to make this movie interesting.

I'm quite surprised with the movie's IMDb score, as well as it's Oscar awards.

If i knew what i know now about the movie i wouldn't have watched it.
