Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Shakespeare would roll in his grave....
I'm not sure what I was expecting when I began to watch this movie. Perhaps I still had in mind the 3 other Shakespearean films that I loved - and understood. That love ended here. While I appreciate what they were going for in this - probably to make high school kids enjoy it more (I'm a Much Ado about Nothing fan myself). However, the attempted mixing of modern day Verona and Shakeespearean language just don't seem to mix. While in any other setting (almost) the language might seem deep, perhaps difficult to follow, yet in this movie it just seemed insincere, and very stiff. I would recommend getting a different version of the classic tale if you are looking for true Shakespeare.
Flashdance (1983)
Not as good as I was expecting....
So, lately I have been seeing all the 'great classics' of the musical and dance era. I started with Grease, (and accidentally saw Grease 2), Saturday Night Live, Dirty Dancing, West Side Story, and the list goes on. I must say Dirty Dancing and Flashdance got nearly the same rating, but I think we all know which is the greater of the two films. Where Dirty Dancing (and most of the other movies) had at least one good song and one to two great dance scenes, I found that Flashdance didn't really have either. Yes, the one song Jennifer Beals does her audition for the dance company to in the end is pretty good, but not memorable. The dancing was only OK, and no songs were a must have on my ipod.
The story line however, was another matter. At first they started out slow, fleshing out the characters, but then I felt as is they threw this approach out the window and flew about pitching random scenes that were not memorable, nor on the whole, necessary.
I also had a problem with the nudity (which I confess I was not expecting)and the swearing felt almost forced, as if they were trying to make it a better movie with curse words: the verdict? They failed.
In my opinion, if you want to see good movie with good dancing and music, see Dirty Dancing, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers or Grease. You will be much more satisfied.
The Last September (1999)
Not sure what the point of this movie was
So I watched this a couple days ago and I'm not really sure what the point of making this movie was. The character didn't really grow and/or change. I was quite excited to see this show because hey it's practically an all star cast right? but it was a waste of my time. As far as acting goes, it was good. As far as scenery goes, it was good. As far as everything else goes, it was good. But there wasn't much of a storyline. A girl plays with an officer, then goes for a bad boy rebel dude, and she ends up being the cause of one of their deaths. Then she ends up leaving with a new friend at the end of the show. She leaves a trail of problems behind her.
An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving (2008)
Didn't expect it to be so good
I actually found this film in our local public library. As I'm starved for anything new to watch I thought hey why not and borrowed this movie. When you see the cover it makes you think it might be a cheesy film. But I didn't think it was at all. The actors whom I personally have never heard of before (but will be looking for in the future!) astonished me at how well they acted. They had me believing the story almost instantly. Though it's no Masterpiece Theater, it's well acted, the music is good, and the characters had you rooting for them the whole time. I suggest that you look for this film. If you liked 'Little Women' I'm pretty sure you will like this one.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009)
Wish Cathrine Hardwicke had done it instead
I knew when I went to the movie that it would NEVER be a good as the book, even though that particular book of the series was not my favorite. The first bit dragged a little and some important scenes (or what I thought important) were not there. The last half where I thought they would spend the majority of the movie, in Volterra was rushed. They sped through, not in keeping with the book as Edward never fought the volturi.I understand when transferring a book to a movie some things you have to change to make the movie move a little faster and such. But somethings were just odd how they worded and did them. Unnecessarily changing some scenes that kinda ruin some bits for the next movie. Like in that one scene near the end when Jacob came over to remind Edward of the treaty, in the book Bella tells him it's none of his business. So at the point in time he doesn't realize that she is going to become a vampire. In the next book when he comes to find out, it sets some things in motion.
The music score for this movie disappointed me. Cause I actually don't even remember there being any. In the first movie music plays a big part I think, to get the right setting.
Also the person who helped the cast with acting should be drug out into the streets and shot. Most of the lines were said just as if they had read them for the first time and had no time to put any emotion or feeling into their words. Robert Pattinson did a not too bad job, but Taylor Lautner (whom i love do not get me wrong), when he was trying to be all mad and stuff, it didn't sound right at all. And Kristen Stewart never had any emotion. Bella isn't nearly as dead in the books as she is in the movie.
My conclusion? Chris Weitz did a shoddy job with this production, and I'm glad he's not doing the next one. Because it's one of my favorite's and if he ruined it too, I would probably do something very bad to him
Hoot (2006)
Way better than I expected!
I thought this was a really great movie especially since it was jut filler for me. I was bored, I got it from the library and I really enjoyed myself! I've watched it twice in the two days and the more I watch it the more I like it.I thought that the plot was going to be really corny but in the end it really could be said that it would be true. I liked the main characters and I thought that they were well cast and you could see true friendship. I thought they all did an excellent job. The ending was good. And you really hate the bad guys and you really like the good guys. Which is what a movie is supposed to be like.
Open Season (2006)
Wasn't another one of those corny animation things
I was expecting another hoodwinked because in hoodwinked they showed seriously EVERY funny part in the trailer, and then since you watch the trailer ten thousand times because you want to see the movie so bad that the actually movie isn't funny at all because you saw it all in the trailer. And I thought that maybe this was another one like that but it was hilarious and very clean except for I think about 4 or 5 "dangs" which was more than I wanted but less than I was expecting. I love the entire thing although it was too short, but if it was longer we'd probably think it was dragged out so maybe it's better off short. but it kept us laughing during the entire thing. Ashton Kutcher was great for the part of Elliot and I love Billy Connolly. Everyone was great though I didn't really "know" any of the others actors/actresses. Grab a friend, get some goodies and have a BLAST!!!
Aquamarine (2006)
totally cute movie!
I absolutely love this movie ! it was so great! i love how fairytaleish it is! it's so very very cute. the guy could've been cuter but he looked kind and stuff. Sara Paxton did a great job as did Aquamarine. Jojo and Emma Roberts did great too. I've watched this show twice and it confirms my want to be an actress.the plot kept you guessing what was going to happen.though the ending wasn't so great it wasn't as bad as some i've seen. Hailey and Claire and Aquamarine we a great pair of friends and them being together made you feel like you were in a pack of great friends too. Hailey moving and aquamarine leaving made me really sad. I didn't like that part but they did get kissed by Raymond!
Rush Hour 2 (2001)
disappointed.......
You know I think this film would have been a lot better without the swearing and stuff in it. and the the naked stuff. All that crap was not needed. It would have been a great movie without all that crap so why put it in there? There was JackieChan and that should have made the movie great in it's self but oh no we have to put sexuality and swearing in it and it's rated PG-13! I can handle swearing but using God's name in vain? no. I cannot abide that. For all you out there who hate this kind of stuff too, don't watch this movie. It's sad that Jackie Chan movies always have bad stuff in it. it's very sad. Because I love Jackie Chan. It's very sad. For the action and stuff I give it a 6.
Madagascar (2005)
This movie is awesome!
i truly have to saw this is in my top ten favorite movies! oh I nearly killed myself laughing when i first saw it. I love seeing it with a new person who hasn't seen it because it's like watching it for the first time all over again! It does say Heck a lot but if you over look that then you have the funniest film EVER! It's funny, the music is hilarious, with just the right touch of hostility that is PERFECTO! Got money? go rent it and you'll be laughing for a long long time. all my favorite quotes are from this movie. Like " come come morise, what's a friendly little bite on the butt among friends? *swishes his tail in morise's face* here, give me a nibble". Go see this Movie and Have a BLAST!
The Shaggy Dog (2006)
It was better than everyone said it was
It wasn't the best but it wasn't the worst movie i've ever seen. It was funny and it was a kid's plot! What are you expecting people? sherlock Holmes? It didn't swear at all that i can remember. Although I didn't like that every time he turned back into a human that he was naked. But it didn't show anything. It just depends how sensitive you are. I laughed through the entire thing. I think it was a good film for only like a 3.4 rating. I liked it. If you have kids then by all means rent it! but if you're looking for a complicated plot go watch Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot. It's funny and has the right combination of wit and family. Go rent and enjoy it! ****** out of ten
Doctor Dolittle (1998)
I can't believe they call that a kids show!
It was funny it was but it was also very crude humor and my family couldn't watch it because it was so filthy. Of course anything with Eddie Murphy in it has something bad in it. Eddie Murphy's favorite thing to do is to swear and I hate swearing. we didn't even watch half of it and we had to turn it off. This is why PG13 means what it is. I'm 14 and i still wouldn't watch it. My Parents wouldn't let me watch it. And my morals wouldn't let me watch it. They show a woman's naked butt and they swear like a sewer. All the jokes have to do with crap. This is NOT a kids show. i would NOT recommend this show to anyone. I do not see why they have to pervert everything.
The Harvey Girls (1946)
A darling western weird romance
Susan Bradley( Judy garland) goes out on an adventure with hope that her new husband is and wonderful and gorgeous as his letters. On the train going to Sandrock a little mining town, she meets the "Harvey Girls", girls who leave home to be waitresses at "The Harvey House". And how they meet is when they see Susan has nothing to eat except literally a couple of crumbs. They offer her a sandwich, which she accepts and while she's eating it, they all ask her why she's going to Sandrock. She tells them all about her new husband Mr H.H. Hartsey "esquire" (Chill Wills) She reads them the letters which she finds out soon that are fake. When the get off the train Mr. Hartsey mistakes the Harvey House cook for Susan. He kisses her and she gives him a beating while the whole train station laughs. But Before this happens they all sing for literally I think about half an hour. (I fast-forwarded it. Warning: never watch this with someone who remembers this when it came out! I watched it with my grandma who thought the singing was good and wouldn't let me skip it!) After they leave the train station and Susan finds out Who's letters they are actually written by, She confronts Mr. Ned Trent about it. She tells him "Oh I'm just someone who doesn't like you Mr.Trent. I don't know if you're a thief or a murderer but I know one thing, you're worse! You're a yellow dog Mr.Trent, Good-day!" And when he goes after her out side she says "You mean I've come 2 thousand miles for a joke?! wouldn't you just love it if I went back home?! Me and all the other nice girls that came out here today! If I have anything to say about it you're going to have to eat all those pretty letters you wrote and yes I hope you choke on them too!" Thus the western romance begins. So Watch this movie girls! you'll adore it!
Pride & Prejudice (2005)
I love the Rain scenes
I adored this show. It was sooo good. I love this Pride and Prejudice film as much and I love the 1995 version of Pride and Prjudice. I love Keira Knightley even though she isn't exactly moral. I didn't think this version was as bright and cheery as the 1995 version. The dresses weren't white and blue and bright, they were more kind-of brown all the time and I found that kind-of annoying, and the house's wallpaper was more or less brown coloured. They made them actually poor in this film. I think they only had one servant, whereas in the 1995 one they had more than 3. I loved Jane in this show. I thought they actually made her prettier then Lizzie as she was supposed to be in the book. If you watched the 1995 version you'll be able to recognize several lines that are exactly the same. Which everyone I watched it with thought was amusing.
I loved in this version the rainy scenes, I love being out in the rain and thought this was perfect. Their lines were so cute in these scenes and I was really happy at where they set them. To watch this show you must have 4 things: at least three Girlfriends, food, happiness, and big screen TV. Have a blast
Garfield: The Movie (2004)
Pretty Good Considering the Low Budget
The First time I watched this my whole family was really sick so it was a pretty good pick-me-up especially for a little kid. We enjoyed watched it I think mostly because we don't rent movies very much. I didn't think Garfiled was that bad for animation, in fact even my brother who is usually commenting through-out the whole film on how bad and good this was or wasn't compared to such and such, thought Garfiled was pretty close to Garfield in the comic strip. I love this movie because it doesn't require you to think. It's very straight forward. I thought "Odie" was such a darling. He was very cute in this part. I'm really glad they didn't use computer animation for him, because though I like the comic strip, the comic strip Odie would'nt have really fit in because he's so weird looking in the strip. I adored Jennifer Love-Hewitt in the film. I think she was really cute. Her romance with Jon was really cute and well acted. But I think I'd have enjoyed this more last night if I'd have my friends over to comment and laugh with.
Hoodwinked! (2005)
Good, but not as good as I thought ..
From the trailer I thought it was going to be like the greatest funniest movie from all time. I thought that the granny would be out of this world cool and that they would use twitchy more. Maybe it was spoiled for me because just before I watched this film I looked at Anne Hathaway's credits and was deeply saddened that she would play in such a disgusting film as "brokeback Mountain" I had hoped she'd be different from other actors and not take part in such filth (I wish you could read this Anne) The movie was funny to an extent but I really thought it's be better. The best part to me was the singing goat and his many antlers. And twitchy. To me all they did was take all the best and funniest parts and put them in the trailer. I was disappointed but again I still laughed. I did think that they could have made it more of a mystery who the recipe thief was. After like the second time you see the thief you know that it's him. I give this movie a seven out of ten for originality and funny points. Despite my down-put on this story, Go rent it and watch it with your best friends have chips and pop and have a blast. That is the best way to enjoy a funny movie. And while you're at it, rent Madagascar too. If you don't laugh at hoodwinked, you'll laugh at this.
The Magic of Ordinary Days (2005)
Awesome movie!
In this Heartwarming show, it portrays an elegance of the older times. Livy Denton becomes pregnant and her father refuses to forgive her for this. He sends her away for a arranged marriage. Stepping off the train the pastor whisks her away to be married to a man she's never seen before in her life. Livy is fortunate though because Ray is a loving, kind, man. Though at first I thought her giving him the cold shoulder was rather mean, especially since he was trying his hardest to please her. During the Middle of the movie I was ready to strangle her because of her coldness, but in time I forgave her. The woman who played Martha is an awesome actor and played her character to a tee. I especially loved this film since the person who played Ray, looks almost identical to someone I know, who is also an equally kind person. This is a wonderful film a must see
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
This movie keeps you on the edge of your seat!
I loved this movie. it was surprisingly clean of bad language and full of excitement and adventure. The plot was good and had you going the whole way. No way could you not like this movie. But don't let your children under 10 or 11 see it because the skeletons and sword fights will scare them and they won't get the funny lines or the story plot. This show is a must see. This shows keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time! Johnny Depp plays a perfect part as a good and bad pirate. I loved Keira Knightly in this movie and even Orlando bloom. They all seemed to fit together. I bet all us POTC lovers will be wanting to see if the next two are as good!
