Tempest (1982)
Narcissistic.
The Greek locale for parts of the movie were very beautiful and the photography get all my votes and that's about the extent of my raves for this movie. I found that all the characters were narcissistic archetypes found so often in the American culture and were shallow and uninteresting. Susan Sarandon and Gena Rowlands are easy to look at but I found their characters very narcissistic and unlikeable for many other reasons. When Gena Rowlands sings at a party it made me wonder how this woman could think of herself as a competent star of the stage. I was tempted to hit the MUTE button until she finished singing. Molly Ringwald was herself and Raul Julia's character was so lecherous he was downright creepy. The movie was much too long for my liking and I could not sit through it again even at the point of a gun.
Cheyenne Autumn (1964)
Spectacular scenery
The scenery is spectacular and the photography does it true justice. You would have to be in Monument Valley to see it any better. The stunning vistas captured by Ford were the hi-light of the film from my perspective. Character development in the movie is minimal so they become less believable as the movie continues. The editing is really awful. Half-way through the movie the screen jumps from a view of the Cheyennes crossing a river to a poker game in which three new characters are introduced to the viewers. The entire poker game sequence could have been omitted. I thought that the movie was much too long, the script and the acting was wooden and the hardship endured by the remaining members of the Cheyenne tribe on their desperate trek to their home was underplayed. This movie glamorized a terrible event in the history of the U.S.A.
Fight Club (1999)
A violent and unbelievable film about big city boys.
I thought that Edward Norton was sensational in American History X but I found him unconvincing in this film. I did not believe the actors, the plot or much of anything in this frequently violent film. If you get your kicks pounding the beejeezus out of somebody else you might love this film. The sub-plot that I got out of this movie was that young men should have lustful sex with other men just for the fun of it all and then they would be less inclined to run around pounding each other to a pulp. The film was way too long, the plot was simply not believable and the acting was really spotty. But then, what is an actor to do with such a bad script?
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
The saddest content wrapped in the most gorgeous scenery makes for an unforgettable movie.
I did not know what to expect when I went to the Vancouver premier yesterday but I was intrigued by the fact that it was filmed near Fort MacLeod and Pincher Creek, Alberta where I grew up. It is one of the saddest movies I have ever seen wrapped in some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Everyone in the movie lost big-time and it was not easy to watch. Everyone in the movie theatre gained something; an awareness that love is a force of nature. The film highlights the problem but there are no solutions offered. I was very depressed when I left the theatre and 24 hours later I am still thinking about it. You will not forget this movie.
