B.T.K. (2008)
I want my dollar back including taxes!!
It's frustrating to see a real life story wasted this way. Director-producer? He seems like an amateur and struggling filmmaker. Explicit violence is sometimes necessary but with no connection with the general narrative it's ridiculous. The actor interpreting Dennis Rader is good, but does not shine. Neither do the policemen. The family is plain bad.
In regards to the script, when it comes to serial killers biography is better. No imagination. No argument. If they tell you the movie is bad, believe it. It may be possible to find a worse movie, but I wouldn't expect that to be an easy task.
Hamlet (1996)
Stick to directing
Branagh may be a good person but he is just not an exceptional actor. He is a little to flamboyant and lacking in subtlety and depth.
The range of emotions that Branagh displays are largely based on the volume of his voice. Intense? he is, histrionic? he is, but you get the idea. Good acting entails more.
This is hardly the complexity that we'd expect from a Hamlet or a Henry V (see my review of Henry V)
Not to attack the poor guy, he actually did a great job in Much Ado, because his character was supposed to BE a little flamboyant. If you are looking for great acting, go for the BBC collection of Shakespeare's works. Otherwise I suppose this version is just fine.
Henry V (1989)
Henry V turned Hollywood blockbuster
I like this play very much after having read it and watch another version of it. But Branagh's work? I didn't like it. It was too "Hollywood-like" It could be said, for lack of a better word, that Branagh "overacted"; but I will just say that his performance wasn't exceptional. He was very intense and histrionic, yes, but intensity alone doesn't make a good film (especially when you're not starring in 'Hard To Kill') Shakespeare's character's are very complex, and complexity I didn't find. On the other hand, it was "dynamic and entertaining". Branagh seems to feel that the more action he brings, the better. Branagh wanted to capture the attention of the masses, and he did it. He made a Hollywood-eske blockbuster.
But if you want quality and superior acting, please get the BBC version of it with David Gwillim (1979)
