Mushishi: Mushishi Tokubetsu-hen: Hihamukage (2014)
Good old Mushishi story
It is good old Mushishi episode, but with around 44 minutes duration.
Mushishi is always different than other stories out there. well, if I have to pick a word for Mushishi story.
I think it is "relaxing".
There is almost no tension in the story. We already know that it will have happy ending without Ginko have to kill or conquer something. Well, yeah he has to get rid of some mushi, but mushi itself has no evil thought, it is not something to be afraid of. Ginko just going around helping people as mushishi, and that's all. don't get me wrong, but for me that is a good thing. Compared to other anime that is freaking original. The story is simple, yet beautiful and there is always good message in it.
This episode is about mushi that makes solar eclipse never end, so don't take sun for granted.
My only complain about this TV movie, they don't put that good opening song.
Youth (2015)
I bet Youth will win best cinematography in Oscar 2015
An art house film with beautiful cinematography where Old man try to find peace of mind.
Youth remained me lot of The Great Beauty, and I just had to stop watching and make sure in IMDb that my suspicion that both movies are made by the same director is right.
Yup, I knew it, Paolo Sorrentino, same director.
His shot is so unique, many of his shots are like a painting, some scenes are shot just because the beauty of it. He is the only director I knew that have that kind of shot, not only he shot beautiful scene, but it's so artistic and classy at the same time. I guess that is his trademark. Just watch his movie you will know what I am talking about.
If Miller has the eyes for action Sorrentino has the eyes for beauty
I bet this will win the Oscar for the best cinematography
But I will never rate Sorrentino's film 10, Sorrentino's story I think is not for everyone.
It is slow paced. The lead characters mostly are old there is not much going on in his story, only life, just life.
If you can't see the beauty of the life itself, this movie is not for you.
Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008)
Very touching, very personal, the most powerful documentary I ever seen
10/10
I never cried watching documentary until I watched this one, and when I have finished watching it, I watched it again. That is how good this documentary is. I even feel sad while writing this review, and I watched Dear Zachary 2 weeks ago.
Unlike other documentaries, this documentary is very personal. The first reason Kurt Kuane made this is for Zachary Turner, the son of his dear friend who is murdered. You can feel how emotional Kurt Kuene narrated it.
Dear Zachary at first wasn't intended for public viewing. Even so this documentary is well made, well written, and have great score. Greatest documentary I ever seen.
The fact that I didn't know anything about Zachary Turner case, make this documentary feel like thriller with shocking twist. More shocking than most thriller out there.
If you haven't watch this, you should. It works better if you didn't know anything about this case. You will end up in emotional roller coaster with this documentary.
I am glad they pass Dear Zachary bill in Canada, I hope it could reduce the pain that Kate and David Bagby feel because of this tragedy.
Stalker (1979)
The movie that inspired S.T.A.L.K.E.R
I was a Gamer before I became a movie fan
I was a fan of S.T.A.L.K.E.R game franchise before I knew Stalker movie even exist Yea Stalker is the movie that inspired S.T.A.L.K.E.R game franchise It is delightful surprise for me seeing the stalkers journey, exploring the Zone to find that one place that can make any wishes come true. It is kinda nostalgic.
The setting of the Zone is great, it is beautiful and creepy at the same time. The fog is amazing, the setting is really amazing. It doesn't feel staged, it looks really natural.
Stalker is movie with gloomy mood. The director, Andrei Tarkovsky is Ingmar Bergman fan-boy....so yeah, now you know why and I hate Ingmar Bergman, so for me Stalker is just an OK film
But I think he made better story than Bergman, his setting and cinematography arguably better than Bergman.
If you are a movie fan that interested in the history of movie, yes you should watch this. If you are not, than just skip this movie.
7/10
Super Size Me (2004)
OK I am not sure now if this 100% legit
After watching this documentary I really lost my appetite, I gave it 10 score at that time.
I gave it 8 now, because now that I think again, you are not supposed to eat if you are already full and this guy eat three McD meals per day no matter what he felt. It's like forcing himself to get that result in the end..
Yea I am bit skeptical., but I still think this is good documentary with a good message, but yea I don't think it is 100% legit. I would gladly changed my mind if somebody duplicate his experiment again.
But in the end it has good message that we should do healthy diet, even if it's not 100% legit.
The Cove (2009)
The ending is kinda disturbing, but it's important documentary
If you are one of those rare people that has huge empathy for animal, don't watch this film This documentary will make you cry. There are graphic violence scene in the end of the documentary. It is really bloody scene.
This documentary is about the investigation in Taiji, Japan. The town where people hunt Dolphins to be sold for Sea World, and some of them will be slaughter for food They want to record what those people do in that cove. In the end they got the evidence.
This documentary is impactful and well documented. I do hope in the end we can stop hunting dolphins, at least stop slaughtering them for their meat.
Gangs of Wasseypur (2012)
Indian Godfather
*I am not a fan of Indian film, mostly I hate it, but Gang of Wasseypur is good.
It is not the typical Indian movie with lot of dancing and typical good guy as lead character.
Watching Gang of Wasseypur is like watching The Godfather instead of watching Indian movies.
The main core of the story is almost similar with The Godfather, but overall with the Indian aspect in it, the story is different. the writer picked real events that happened in India, and put it in the story. So there is little bit history lesson of India there, which is cool.
The character is very different with the Godfather counterpart, Sardar Khan is not like Vito Corleone, he is more violence and kinda selfish, although their core story almost similar. But they are totally different character. The other filler characters is totally different.
Good news , there is no dancing in this movie, but surprisingly, there is many good soundtracks in this film. They put great traditional Indian music instead the typical music in Indian movies.
If you like The Godfather I think you can appreciate this Gang of Wasseypur, even if you hate Indian movies like me. This is not typical Indian movies, totally worth checking.
CSI: Cyber (2015)
Lot of plot holes
Just terrible.
The 1st episode is terrible. It looks really cool thou :D, but still terrible :(.
"If the crime is using electronic device, it is for Cyber crime unit". O, man I think that is kidnapping there. how the cyber crime unit took the case, it just doesn't make any sense. It's like the writer just force that to happen.
There are many ridiculous moments, and forced story. That biological dad got the wrong baby, it is just like really weird. It's like it's in the story just to prolong the duration.
The lead character is bad. She is that mom in Boyhood. She was OK in there, but she is really bad in this series. The other character is typical stereotype with the "cyber" theme, Geek, Hacker, and Gamer.
It's not original it's just rehash of detective TV show with forced Cyber theme. Overall it is bad show.
Ladri di biciclette (1948)
Over-rated
A Guy need bicycle for his job
sold his bed cover to get a bike
bike got stolen
he and his son search the stolen bike
can't get it back
THE END
Over-rated movie. I can't see why people consider this a masterpiece, more like a piece of crap. Totally over-rated. Thank God I watched this in 4x speed, don't wanna waste more time in this movie.
There are many other film deserving the place in Top 250 like Titanic or Avatar. I hope this movie will lose the place in top 250 one day.
Incendies (2010)
Very powerful film...
It's disappointing that Incendies didn't get an Oscar because...
Incendies is one of the very powerful movies I've watched so far. Probably the most powerful one, because I can't remember the last time a movie made me speechless...that 1+1 scene...OMG
Best French Canadian movie in my opinion, even thou I only have watched 2 so far :P, I have no doubt Incendies will be the best French Canadian movie for me for years to come. It is a masterpiece.
The story is about the twins that go to middle east to search their brother they never knew at their mother request. It is very fascinating how the truth is unfold one by one and I didn't expect that coming...the ending is very shocking one. Yes it is powerful masterpiece with amazing writing, but it is not flawless, I think there is a logical flaw or technical flaw (damn u make up artist >,<), but it is also something that make the audience from figuring the truth. Even with the flaw Incendies is still 10/10 movie for me.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Random writing in a film
When I watch a film I really wanna see the story with my own eyes.
I really really hate when I watch a film showing someone telling a story. You end up listening to his story secondhand...
I also hate that Pulp Fiction is lack of soundtrack.
If you love Family Guy, big chance you will love this movie. The fact that the dialogue in this movie is blast of randomness without any coherence whatsoever, reminds me of family guy random jokes. To be honest, I really hate random dialogue in a film, many of the conversation in this movie is not sync with the actual plot.
I don't understand why people love this crap. Guys, don't you realize that even Tarantino does not stay with this random dialogue kind of writing. The way I see it he wrote better story after Pulp Fiction, for example Django Unchained is well written with coherence dialogue and actual plot with a message. The funny fact is Django Unchained has lower rating than Pulp Fiction.
Such a shame...
rating 5/10, PS: even the writing is random crap, Pulp Fiction has amazing casts.
Per un pugno di dollari (1964)
One of the top 250 films in IMDb is the work of plagiarist, WTF!
OK, I watched this before I watched Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo.
So I have no idea before that, even so I just rated 7/10 before, I thought it was an OK film. It's not that great, I actually fell asleep at the half of the movie.
When I watched Yojimbo later on, I just realize that Fistful of Dollar is Yojimbo ripoff, from the beginning to the end.
I remembered there is no acknowledgment of Akira Kurosawa in that film. Leone is an asshole for claiming the story as his Idea and did not acknowledge the blunt fact he ripped off Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo without publicly apologizing.
You know Kurosawa sued Leone, it never end up in court. It end up with settlement 100.000 $ and 15% revenue of this film for Akira Kurosawa.
It such a shame that this movie end up in top 250 films in IMDb for many years....
Fanny och Alexander (1982)
The best work of Ingmar Bergman
This movie won Oscar for best foreign movie , for the set and cinematography for good reason.
The cinematography and the set of this movie is really gorgeous. But still I hate Ingmar Bergman as a writer.
I rated 6/10 The only Ingmar Bergman movie that is an OK film, his other movie is over-rated philosophical crap. This one is still crap but beautifully shot. The actors are good but if the director (and writer) is suck, you end up with this kind of movie.
Let's face it Ingmar Bergman story with religious hint is so outdated nowadays. The question about the meaning of life and death is not interesting subject anymore. The fact that 4 of his movies are still in top 250 films IMDb is kinda upsetting for me, because his movie is really boring after half way through.
The thing I really hate about all of his movie, is that he never put any soundtrack in it..... yeah not a melody...
PS: As writer, Bergman is better in Persona
Intouchables (2011)
Best French movie ever
I gave it 10/10. I just love this movie.
I was surprised by the fact that Intouchables is not included in nomination for French Best Picture in 2011.
This is one the rare movie that people will describe it "Beautiful". This is beautiful film, about life changing friendship between two guys that in normal circumstance would never be friends.
I would like to praise Ludovico Einaudi, he made very touching soundtrack. The first scene with his song Fly and the last scene with Una Mattina are great scene, especially the last scene. when I saw amazing actors in great scene with touching soundtrack, I just can't help it, I keep thinking "that is so beautiful".
I don't remember how many French films I explored, by far this one is the best. You don't wanna miss this.
It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
Arguably James Stewart best performance
To be honest before I watch It's a Wonderful Life, I really don't like James Stewart. I watched him in Vertigo, Rear Window, and other Hitchcock's movie, and I don't like him at all, I think he was so typical and 1 dimensional. After I watched him in this movie, I start to like him, especially when he acted in the last part. Well I guest I just hate Hitchcock as a director, not Stewart as an actor.
Back to the movie, at first I don't like it because Stewart looks so older when he was playing as teenager Bailey -.-". After half of the movie I don't really care, I guess I am such a sucker for Christmas family movie, the golden part of this movie is the last part after Bailey met the angel, Stewart showed that he is good actor in this part. In the end this is good family movie if you like Christmas film.
Martyrs (2008)
This movie gave me a nightmare!!!
O dayum, I woke up in the middle of the night. I had a nightmare haunted by that ghost in the Martyr, and you know I don't remember the last time a movie give me any nightmare (I thought only my ex gives me nightmare).
I know I shouldn't have watched this movie before going to sleep, and I watched the unrated version -.-".
there is no way I am gonna get to sleep for at least another 30 minutes, I have to push the dead girl outside of my brain with some music before I do.
while I am recovering I guess I will just write this review.
This movie is so disturbing. The first half of the movie made me feel really anxious. I even had to take a break watching the first half of the movie.
it is disturbing not only because the gore is so realistic, but the story telling at the first half is well done. You will be wondering what is going on? did she murder innocent family? is that real? It's that kind of storytelling that made you on edge but you can't stop because you are so curious.
The sound, OMG... I took break after the first girl died and the other girl heard a sound in empty house, I was like if the dead woman gonna hurt the other girl, I can't take it anymore, I need a break.
and the ending, it is unpredictable. There are two key moment in the movie before the real ending that could be an ending, the first one is disturbing ending, but hey the story is still go on and you got an OK happy ending, but the story still go on... just watch yourself for the real ending.
The flaw in this movie is that the 1/3 part at the end is kinda predictable, it just felt too long. But since the first half is really good i still give it 8
I have watched a lot of horror movies, and most of them don't scare me at all, but this one made me feel so anxious and give me fuk**g nightmare.
This is the most disturbing horror movie I ever saw, I can't recommend it enough just go watch it if you love horror movie.
Do-ga-ni (2011)
How a movie shape a nation
God damn it, I shed tears.
there are many sensitive variables that could make people cry in this movie, such as;
It is about children... deaf, mute, orphan, abandoned, abused, raped, dead, need I say more?
I think those reasons are enough to make people shed a tear, if not probably you are an asshole (like me in real life :P).
Once I finished the movie, I felt sad, enrage, and little bit disappointed because there is no justice in the movie (well, what do you expect it's based on real life).
Then I realized how powerful this movie is... and yeah, this movie sparked rage in South Korea public. The public there demanded that this case should be re-open. After this movie the Education ministry demanded more detailed profile and criminal record from every teachers, and they have shut down Inhwa School. The government passed Dogani law (named after this movie). Even the president of South Korea made a comment and stand with public opinion.
For a movie to give such a big impact in a nation is pretty impressive. So yeah, this is one of those rare movie that shape a nation, and made you realized how powerful a movie can be.
Big note: Those child actors are impressive (WOW!!). Their acting is so convincing, they made me ;_:
Warrior (2011)
Instead making you Warrior, Warrior will make you cry like little Bi**h T_T
Hahaha yeah, I cried at the final fight and some Nick Nolte scene :( .This is build up movie. You will emotionally invested to the characters, you feel bad for them, you love them, you care for them...
and than BAM it will just explode at the finale.
The final fight is great, I love the acting, the score, the camera movement. It felt like a real MMA fight. But this is more than a fight. It's deeper than that. These guys are brothers. It is hard watching them hurting each other. I can't really find better words to explain it, but for me that was really emotional scene.
Oh yeah I said it is build up movie and I highlighted the finale fight, but the build up parts are great too. All part of the movie is good, not just the finale. These guys are great actors. Oscar worthy performance from Nick Nolte, Tom Hardy, and Joel Edgerton. The action also great too, not bad since these guys is not real fighters.
BTW if you wanna enjoy Warrior, you have to suspend your disbelief for awhile. Because I think there is major plot hole in Tony story line, but you can just ignore it.
If you can do that, you will have a good time watching this movie. It's not perfect but it is still great movie.
Relatos salvajes (2014)
Surprisingly delightful
More story por favor :) So there are 6 epic stories in this movie.
Remember the Vengeance trilogy, the story is kinda like that but it is shorter and it has lot dark comedy in it.
I love that the first three stories have short build up without delaying the excitement. I think it's just hilarious.
I kinda hate the fourth story I think it is the weakest link, I would rate it six.
The fifth story is kinda weak too.
The last story is bit different than the rest, but is the most hilarious. It is about marriage and love but with dark comedy in it, something refreshing so just watch it.
Overall it's quite refreshing, this is one of non-English movie that you don't wanna miss.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
Original and Remake both are great movies
"What's the point of making a remake? If the story is plot dependant? that is simply taking the subtitle of the original movie" That's what I thought about a remake before I watched this, I always assume that the remake always worse than the original.
Oh but boy, I was wrong. You can still make a remake that is better than the original, even if the story is plot dependant. David Fincher remake of Girl With Dragon Tattoo proofs me wrong.
When I started watching the US remake of Girl With Dragon Tattoo, I know I won't get any surprise since I have watched the original.
I thought it would have taken the pleasure, well maybe I would enjoy it more if I haven't watched the original.
But I still having a good time watching the remake, even without major surprises.
OK here are good things about the remake (ignoring the fact that they don't speak Swedish?): THE CASTS (I like it) The casts is closer to what I imagine what the characters would be Lisbeth Salander supposed to be in her 22 in this movie, and Mara obviously better cast than Rapace, she is closer to that age.
Blomkvist supposed to be bit playboy in the book, which is why Craig is a better cast than the Sweden cast.
THE PLOT CHANGES I kinda feel 50:50, about the fact that Fincher changed some of the plot.I like the daughter visiting, gave Blomkvist clue instead Lisbeth gave him clue because she still stalked his laptop, which is weird.
I don't like the Harriet/Anita plot changed. It just feel bit weird. When the Harriet revealed her self, I thought what the hell. There is major plot hole there.
I honestly felt less thrill in the remake, but maybe it's because I have watched the original.
OTHER ASPECTS The cinematography and the score, I think both are great. Can't compare them.
OVERALL The remake is equally good with the original. There are some improvement here and there. Worth watching even if you have watched the original.
The Drop (2014)
Amazing movie if you like realistic crime drama
7 seriously? This, is at least 8 star movie, I'd give it 10 just to raise the rating (I would give it 8,5 actually) So, why this movie doesn't deserve 7.
STORY: The story is about crime in a city. It's not that crime movie with lot of action, but the story engaging and well told, it's really good story with good twist, it's that kind of story that made u curious the entire time.
CINEMATOGRAPHY (WOW): The setting in this movie is in bad neighborhood in US , around and in the bar. Sounds bad to watch? Not in a hands of amazing cinematographer.. this movie has superb cinematography, wow.
I am so impressed just by that aspect of it. Wow what beautiful shot. They even play with the lightnings , something I rarely notice in a movie. You know if the scene is a painting, is that painting that always have beautiful color palette, that's how good the shot in this movie. Salute to the director and the DOP. Make sure you watch it in good HD TV so you know what I am talking about.
CHARACTERS: Bob the bartender by Tom Hardy. He is the sympathetic character. Tom Hardy is great, he is kinda adorable in this movie :P, and I think now he is the sexiest actor. I just love him as Bob.
Nadia the one who treated the dog, the girl with abusive ex-boyfriend. I wish Nadia is prettier, she is not that pretty. Don't expect any sex, it didn't happen. She keeps getting spotlight because everybody love her, since her performance in A Girl with Dragon Tattoo. She is good actress though. She is the main character love interest.
Nadia's ex-boyfriend, he is intimidating, give me the creep In a way he is the main villain. I don't know the one who played the character, but he delivered the character quite well.
The detective by John Ortiz. Man, Wrong actor, he is not that good. He didn't add any tension. Probably because I watched him before in comedy TV show, well, I don't know. I just wish the detective is played by other actor.
SOUNDTRACK: The score is amazing, I love it.
OVERALL: This is a amazing movie, beautifully shot, with amazing actors in it, good story, and lovely score. Watch it.
Deliver Us from Evil (2014)
It's not that bad, it's quite OK horror flick
In a way watching horror movies is like having relationship, u feel like sh*t when it ended, but it doesn't mean it was bad relationship, it was probably your best relationship you ever had.
So does the horror movies, if u feel terrible after watching it, it doesn't mean its bad movie, horror flicks supposed to make u feel that way.
I think that's one of the reason why horror movie is always underrated, many people rate it while they are feel terrible and still recovering from watching the movie.
So I just watched this movie, actually I am still recovering from watching it.
The director of this movie is the one that made Sinister, I think is not as strong as Sinister (I love Sinister), but it's not that bad, it doesn't deserve 6. I gave it 7.
So what's good about the movie? The story is not that bad. The story can keep me entertained till the end. I watched every second of it. Although I feel like the pacing can be better.
The cinematography is good, it is well shot, it gave the chill and dark atmosphere.
There are few shocking moment, although it is not as many as Insidious. but when it came it doesn't feel forced.
Oh there is McHale to ease the tension, although his joke is kinda bland in this movie, it's still nice to see familiar face (I watched Community).
Well overall it was OK movie. I can't really say anything bad about it, but yea it's not really epic, but it's OK. If you like horror, and can suspend your disbelief for two hours, this movie can entertain you.
Sense8: What's Going On? (2015)
I bet you guys sang in the "what's going on" part right :P
OK before episode 4, I haven't decided yet if I love this show or not. I thought it was OK but i was not sure if its gonna be epic for me.
I say the last scene of this episode change my mind. That's golden there :P. Yea the singing part stole my heart, "and I say what's going on!!"
There is the scene where these 8 people suddenly singing what's going on from 4 Non Blondes. O my god, watching these 8 people sang beautiful song with the original song in play, that's powerful scene. You know these 8 people have mental connection to each other somehow. That premise maybe bit ridiculous, but hey when they sang their heart out, I bet most of the audiences even felt the connection and sang while these 8 people sang "what's going on", because I did hahaha. PS: Wolfgang and Kala are so cute when they sang together :).
I love this show and I have high expectation from this show because of that scene and the fact, that it was made by the Wachowski brothers. I was Matrix fanboy. So yeah this is my fave episode so far. Just watch it, you will sing it too.
House M.D. (2004)
Medical American Sherlock?
Few % of Atheists I know posted House M.D. quote in their facebook. So that got me curious about this show.
I watched the first episode. It's probably very premature for me to judge the show, since I only watched 1 episode, but I will judge it anyway :P
House M.D. presented you with this "suppossed to be-unique", genius, sarcastic character called dr. House. he solves the mystery of 'medical' case in each episode. To put it bluntly, it's like watching detective show, but the mysterious villain is the disease, and the Sherlock is this House. So is not really that original. This typical 1 case per episode show has a weakness, that is lacking of character and story development.
The other characters beside House are bland. and House is not really that interesting, most of the time he is just this grumpy old man. I can't grasp, if he is really genius or not with all the medical deduction that he said. without medical knowledge, we don't know for sure if he said brilliant diagnosis or just random medical bullshit.
So, that's it for me, I have no interest for pursuing the next episode.
Six Feet Under (2001)
Very enjoyable slice of life
The thing I learned in IMDb, if the show has 8 rating it still could be dumb show, but if it has 9 rating, it must be really good. Six Feet Under almost got 9, how could that be, it's just slice of life drama.
Slice of life, no action, no murder, no supernatural, no thrill, no mystery, and superhero stuff...
I honestly kinda worried at first, if I would not like the show. Since I am big fan of Dexter, I though this show is worth checking, at least there is Michael C. Hall in it.
Just like my expectation, watching Michael C. Hall itself is enjoyable hour. Also, just like other show with 9 rating, Six Feet Under is really good.
It's hard not to love this show, because; first, you got this lovely score by Thomas Newman for the opening.
2nd, you got Amazing cast. Great acting overall.
3rd, The most powerful thing of this show is the writing. Making a slice of life story into something this refreshing is just genius. Oh I just realize the creator is Alan Ball, the one who made American Beauty.
Overall Six Feet Under deserves the almost 9 rating in IMDb, and all the awards it got. If you have not watched, go watch it! It is great show :).
