One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
It may just be the best movie ever made...
There are a handful of films that border on being perfect. But in my humble opinion, this one tops them all. I've seen this movie more times than I can remember and it still makes me angry, happy, laugh and cry every time I watch it.
I've never read the book and I never really had the urge to after viewing the film. But my mother has and attests that the book is better than the film...and she loves the movie adaptation.
This film made so many careers and was the first movie to make me yell at the screen in frustration. Can't recommend highly enough.
"Where do you suppose she lives?"
Her (2013)
Please read if you're considering rating this film a 1 ....
I joined this community because I have a true love for film. I assumed that most people who took the time to join a website and discuss films would share the same passion. That said, I've come to realize that simply isn't true. Any person who has the slightest bit of respect for the art would never consider rating a movie so low. I don't care what movie it is. But it's particularly perplexing to me when I see an angry mob of people rating a movie like "Her" a "1 out of 10". If for no other reason - the director invested his time, energy, and probably a lot of his own personal feelings into writing the script for this film (which most directors don't) and then directing it.
This project consumed his life for who knows how long. Taste in movies, just like music, is subjective. You may not like an actor, plot, style, genre etc. You may think a movie is grossly overrated...Like I did The Avengers. I thought it was silly and beating a dead horse. Obviously I could see aspects that demand respect..despite it not appealing to me personally. Rating a movie that low is more a testament to the type of person you are, than a review of the film itself. There's the argument that the reasoning behind your hatred is to bring what YOU think is too high a score. Why not score it what you truly believe it to be? Which cannot rationally be a 1...even if you hated it.
I can't believe I have to gripe about this. I can't believe people are so immature. Rate the movie as an intelligent person who respects the art and the time and passion invested in it. I can honestly say I don't see myself ever rating a movie so low, save for a pro rape or racist propaganda film. Grow up, people. Thx.
Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma (1975)
What we don't know, doesn't hurt us.
But what we don't know makes us ignorant. In the battle between blissful ignorance and agonizing knowledge...I choose the latter.
Fascist Europe during the 30s and 40s was a particularly bizarre time in human history. The limits of politics, ideals, nationalism, and cock measuring were being pushed to their limits by a few men who somehow landed the support of millions.
This movie, to me, depicts what happens when evil is left to govern a country or continent without resistance. You can call it sick, degrading, and violent with good cause. Because it is. But what you can't do is call it meaningless. Calling a films depiction of such acts pointless and violence for shock's sake makes the deaths of the victims during that time meaningless. If people don't see with their eyes the atrocities man is capable of, there is no hope of stopping future stains. Closing our eyes to the ugliness humans are capable of is doing us nothing but a great injustice.
The Alphabet (1969)
Ahead of its time...
I'm a Lynch fan. Perhaps more an admirer of his art than his films. And I love most of his films.
What I like most about his short films, particularly his early ones, is that the themes or ideas presented - although abstract - are singular. I adore MD for what it is to me... A collection of brilliant short stories which parallels never really added up. I've read some clever thesis on the subject and some even struck a chord. But for me, Lynch hits hardest when he's not tied to a specific plot or timescale. Alphabet and rabbits are a prime example. I never bothered reading theories on their meanings because they made sense to me right away.
The one thing I'll say about Lynch is that he does not give any credit to his influences.
Nymphomaniac: Vol. I (2013)
Ever contemplated the mind of a woman?
First let me say that I'm writing this as I'm watching the edited version of vol.I. I also created an account just to comment on this film. I find it very disheartening to see a film, controversial as it may be, be given a "1" rating. I assume that if you took the time to create a profile on a website dedicated to film that you have ,at the very least, a respect and/or admiration for the art. Giving a film a "1" rating-based on your particular belief system is parallel to burning a book for being too 'provocative'. Your beliefs and morals are not shared by everyone. The world is not a perfect place. The wonderful thing about film is that it allows us to see the world through other people's eyes and perspectives.
I've always thought that if reincarnation did in fact exist, that I would like to come back as a woman. I've always been fascinated by, and loved women. Women are born into a disposition in which they have a sexual power that most men do not. It's very interesting to ponder the thought processes involved with this realization. Not to say all women act and think like the one depicted in the film...but some does get her you like it or not.
I'm of the opinion that the people who attack this film are the same people who have never tried to see the world through another person's eyes. The same people who choose not to see the world as it really is..The dark and the light. I for one embrace and seek other views and perspectives other than my own. If for no other reason than experiencing the world for all it is.
