Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
A boring mess that is occasionally fun and entertaining thanks to Sam Raimi style.
For start the script isn't good. It rather generic and it take some times for the real madness to begin. There's stakes but you don't feel the urgency because you don't have time to care for the characters. Most of their arc felt rushed. Also there isn't much alternate universes and not enough madness which are the best parts of the movie. There's a little bit of your typical MCU humor that are hit-and-misses but some of have that Raimi touch which can be refreshing if your into his style.
It feels like two directors worked on this, the producers and Raimi. Most of the exposition scenes are uninspired and boring. You can tell that Raimi probably didnt have enough time to establish some good cinematography. At least it better than No Way Home on that part.
Raimi style is heavily diluted but when it time for action he delivers. There's some pretty good wacky and creative scenes as well as some pretty intense battles. There's some gruesome kills but without the gore. You can tell Raimi is pushing the PG-13 rating.
Most of the cast are pretty good and the special effects are good. There's on few occasion a little mix of practical and cgi effects which was refreshing in these times.
Overall it a fun mess that could've been so much better with a stronger script and more creative control to Sam Raimi.
Best of the Best II (1993)
First one is the better sports drama but this is definitly the better action movie.
The first one was a good above average sports drama with a poignant ending. It didn't do nothing new but was well executed overall.
This sequel deviate from the sports drama formula to be an action movie and it weirdly succeed at that. It a lot more fast paced and contains even more action than the first film. The switch to action might turn some fans of the first off but for action junkies like me this didnt bother me.
There's a lot more fighting scenes in this one and they're very well choreographed. The final 20 min is very entertaining. They even manage to throw in a couple of small shootouts. It also a lot more violent than the first with a couple of brutal death scenes.
The story is still the weakest part with some big plot holes and less characters moment than the first. The chemistry between Alex(Eric Roberts) and Tommy (Phillip Rhee) still shine and really help to carry the film despite it flawed minimal plot.
Overall it a surprisingly good sequel that is more fast paced and action oriented than the first.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
There's a good ghost story but the storytelling got a major slump halfway throught.
I thought the story of this show was good for the first 4 episodes. It more of a slow paced drama. We don't get any big encounters or events during these episodes but it got good characters moments. You're quickly invested in their life and you care for most of them. The actors did a fine job portraying these characters.
The cinematography is great, the lightning and score helps bring a melancholic atmosphere . There' a constant feel of dread and sadness. But it far from being a scary and tense atmosphere.
But midway throught the serie they introduce some kind of mechanic that appears neat at first but they abused it to the point of exhaustion.I get what they tried to achieve but it totally kill the pacing and storytelling for 3 episodes. They could've brings all the importants moments into one single episode and moved on.
After these 3 episodes ,the pacing pick up a little. Theres one episode in black and white that appears to be a filler at first but then it tell a great origins story.
Then there's the conclusion, it start with a good final to the main story. Then there's an epilogue that tell a tragic tale about the fate of some characters. It beautifully done but it think they should've left out some unnecessary elements. It defenitly not gonna appeal to everyones. They don't try to shove too much ideas down out throat but it there.
Overall i think it couldve been a much better and effective ghost story if they didnt kill the pacing with some unnecessary segments.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
What couldve been a competent action movie is dragged down by horrendous writing ,political agenda.and too much cgi.
Let start with the goods,
- Grace is a good character that is bit underdeveloped, some facts about her are not explained.
- Dani has an interesting arc that isn't fleshed out. It a mix of Sarah and John Connor but more rushed and soulless.
- The first couple of action scenes are actually decent with a nice mix of practical and CGI effects.
- Always nice to see Arnold in his iconic role even if it doesn't make sense at all.
- Tim Miller direction is good. Despite the overuse of CGI, some of the action set pieces were well thought. The future war scenes are great while short and some emotional scenes are well done.
- A solid soundtrack from Junkie XL.
Mixed feeling,
- Rev 9 is actually what the T-X that should've been in T3. The idea of mixing liquid and solid skeleton is neat but underexploited. While the actor did what he could he is nowhere near as menacing and cold as Robert Patrick T-1000.
And now the bad,
- The inclusion of Sarah Connor and Arnold T-800 doesn't make sense at all and are only present the give fan service and force a questionable narrative. Sarah Connor arc was completed in T2 and even Linda admitted at some point that she didn't reprise her role earlier for such reason.
The opening was written for many wrong reasons. John Connor is Dead, Sarah Connor is now driven by vengeance and the T-800 will suddenly gain a conscience to have a purpose. John is soon replaced by a new savior which is Dani and a new future is happening with a new AI just out the blue.
So in others words they just created a new universe so they can push more political agenda and use fan service in hope to sell more tickets to create a new trilogy that totally disregard and disrespect the legacy of Terminator. That sounds quite familiar.
- They make no good use of Sarah Connor. She has one badass moment and then she suddenly take a step back to become some kind of comic relief and she occasionally bring drama. She doesn't contribute much to the plot. There's no growth or character development. All that screen time could've used to develop the new characters but it reduced to a minimum. It a shame because Linda Hamilton still give a good performance.
- The last couple of action scenes are boring. They're too ridiculous and overly use CGI when things get chaotic. And were not talking about good looking crispy CGI but the blurry undercook ones that seems to have been made in a week in Blender.
What the hell happened to simple stories about relationships and values between interesting characters while having great thrilling action scenes with great attention to details using a good mix CGI and practical effects to make a great rollercoaster of emotion and entertainment ?
Turbo Kid (2015)
A great homage to yesterday's post-apocalyptic movies and one of the best splatstick movie ever.
Saw this gem at Fantasia 2015. After seeing the earlier works from the team, Bagman and T is for Turbo, i was surprised by how well they executed the splatstick humor for these short films. Then the trailers for the movie began to show and i was eager to see to final result. Verdict ? It one of the best splatstick movie ever and a great tribute to yesterday's post-apocalyptic movies.
The plot of the movie is very simple. You will see coming most of the twists and it hit some very familiar ground. But the plot isn't there to engage your brain, it rather there to embark you on a wild ride with colorful characters and crazy encounters. Most of these encounters are resolved with some hilariously creative kills and old school one-liners. It splatstick humor at its finest.
The acting overall is good. There's no award winning stuff but the timing is good and the actors are convincing for this type of movie. Munro Chambers was a good choice for Turbo Kid, he play very well the underdog hero. Laurence Leboeuf stand out as Apple, Turbo Kid "girlfriend", she give her character a lot of life and a very dynamic presence. Both of them help to create a great chemistry between Turbo Kid and Apple. Micheal Ironside is a good villain and does exactly what you expect from him.
The soundtrack is very good. It got that John Carpenter vibe to it and help to create a great retro atmosphere to the movie.
The directing is perhaps the strongest point of the movie. The camera-work is inspired and it give us some beautiful shots. They made great use of practical and cgi effects. The gore is very well done and over the top as you might expect from an old school splatstick movie. The choreography of the fights is creative and the use of cgi in some kills are obvious but convincing for this type of movie.
Overall, it a very good old school post-apocalyptic movie with good acting, lot of splatstick humor, great visual effects ,great soundtrack, good characters and a simple but fun plot.
Code Red (2001)
Good....... for what it is.
I've seen the the movie yesterday night and i was a little surprised. For me at the beginning it was just a rip-off of Predator but its certainly not.The plot was simple and unoriginal, the script was dumb and it was not scary at all.
But where i enjoyed the movie is the high production value for a B-movie. The special effect were a little superior than the other B-movie.Some good flashy explosion and high polygon monster. The director have done a good job. Some scenes are very well directed.
The acting was good. Some actor have done a good performance in their role. But they are some actor who act like a puppet.
The thing i enjoyed the most is the action sequences, they are quite entertaining. They are well directed and well filmed. They know where to put the camera angle and the motion in each scenes. And there a lot of action scenes for this kind of movie.
So,its a well directed B-movie with good action sequences ,but suffer with a dumb script and unoriginality.
6/10
